Ultimate Strength Prediction In Fiberglass/Epoxy Beams Subjected To Three-Point Bending Using Acoustic Emission And Neural Networks, Michele D. Dorfinan

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The research presented herein demonstrates the feasibility of predicting ultimate strengths in composite beams subjected to 3-point bending using a neural network analysis of acoustic emission (AE) amplitude distribution data. Fifteen unidirectional fiberglass/epoxy beams were loaded to failure in a 3-point bend test fixture in an MTS load frame. Acoustic emission data were recorded from the onset of loading until failure. After acquisition, the acoustic emission data were filtered to include only data acquired up to 80 percent of the average ultimate load.

A backpropagation neural network was constructed to predict the ultimate failure load using these AE amplitude distribution …

An Analysis Of Intention Formation As A Function Of Prospective Memory In Air Traffic Controllers, Jennifer Nagle Apr 2004

An Analysis Of Intention Formation As A Function Of Prospective Memory In Air Traffic Controllers, Jennifer Nagle

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Prospective memory, or memory for future intents, is an important part of everyone's daily life. Air traffic controllers whose jobs are based in an environment that taxes their memory resources for extended periods of time rely on this type of memory. Controllers objectives often change based on incoming information and the amount of traffic they are controlling. It is important to investigate how controllers form intentions for future events, what processes facilitate retrieval of this information, and establish what influence experience may have. This study proposes to assess controllers in an air traffic scenario by employing a cognitive task analysis …

Instrument Pilot Skill Acquisition In The Early Phases Of Flight Training Using An Advanced Cockpit Display System, Erin E. Accettullo Apr 2004

Instrument Pilot Skill Acquisition In The Early Phases Of Flight Training Using An Advanced Cockpit Display System, Erin E. Accettullo

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the learning curve associated with complex flight behavior for both conventional and synthetic vision systems (SVS). The objective was to assess potential differences in learning curves and subjective workload. Workload data across trials indicated a negative linear trend, with a significantly lower level of workload on the synthetic vision display compared to conventional instruments. Levels of performance were significantly higher in the SVS condition, and revealed a quadratic trend, supporting the hypothesis that skill acquisition occurs faster while training with the SVS. These differences in learning and workload curves have implications for …

An Investigation Of Fuel Consumption During The Warm Up Cycle Of A Gasoline Engine Using 87 Octane Ethanol Blended And Unblended Fuel, Michael Aaron Scott

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research investigated fuel consumption during the warm up cycle of a gasoline engine using 87-octane gasoline blended with 0%, 10%, and 20% ethanol. The purpose of this research was to determine ifthere is a significant statistical difference in fuel consumption among the ethanol-gasoline blends controlling for temperature. The experiment identified three properties of ethanol blending: (1) energy (fuel) potential, (2) determination of the speed (time intervals) of the energy consumption within the engine, and (3) indirect effects on coolant temperature. The researcher selected the two-way ANOVA (analysis of variance between variables), covariant, and post hoc to analyze the raw …

Fatigue Of Drill Pipes Used In Horizontal Directional Drilling, Feibai Ma Apr 2004

Fatigue Of Drill Pipes Used In Horizontal Directional Drilling, Feibai Ma

Doctoral Dissertations

Fatigue is the most common cause of mini-HDD drill rod failure. It can occur at stress levels far below the normal operating stress in most drill stem components. Fatigue failures occur because the drill rod, after it has been forced into a curved path, undergoes a cyclic bending stress oscillating from tension to compression in concert with the other stress components caused by torque, thrust, or pullback.

When a rod breaks underground, there is considerable extra cost caused by the delay in “fishing” out the broken rod as well as the cost of replacing the rod. On the other hand, …

Its benefit is …

Parallel Decomposition Procedures For Large-Scale Linear Programming Problems, Yusong Hu Apr 2004

Parallel Decomposition Procedures For Large-Scale Linear Programming Problems, Yusong Hu

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In practice, many large-scale linear programming problems are too large to be solved effectively due to the computer's speed and/or memory limitation, even though today's computers have many more capabilities than before. Algorithms are exploited to solve such large linear programming problems, either in the sequential or parallel computation environment. This study focuses on two parallel algorithms for solving large-scale linear programming problems efficiently.

The first parallel decomposition algorithm discussed in this study is from the theory problems in a special block-angular structure. The theory or the decomposition principle is first examined. Since the subproblems of a linear programming problem …

The Relationship Of Project Team Attributes To Project Interim Performance, Vickie S. Parsons Apr 2004

The Relationship Of Project Team Attributes To Project Interim Performance, Vickie S. Parsons

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The factors associated with project success, or failure, have not been conclusively resolved in the project management literature. The purpose of this research was to investigate the relationship of project team attributes and interim project performance using a statistical research design. An abundance of research has focused solely on the importance of technical project components as they relate to cost, schedule, or technical performance. However, research into internal team attributes has been sporadic and, generally, associated with subjective measures of project performance or less than optimal statistical techniques. Prior assessment of project performance has also been concentrated at project completion. …

Prediction Of Rigid Body Aircraft Acceleration Response Due To Atmospheric Disturbances, Billy Keith Buck Apr 2004

Prediction Of Rigid Body Aircraft Acceleration Response Due To Atmospheric Disturbances, Billy Keith Buck

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Methodology to predict aircraft transient motion resulting from flight within an unsteady atmospheric environment, coupled with validation using flight test data is proposed. A family of five linear dynamic models is developed for describing the normal acceleration throughout an aircraft cabin due to vertical gust excitation. The five models successively build upon each other by incorporating higher fidelity gust penetration effects while simultaneously maintaining a unified modeling framework. Six wind fields reconstructed from flight test data are used to excite the vehicle models. Simulation responses are compared with forward, center, and aft accelerometer response data recorded during the test. Each …

Source Identification Of Ammonia Inputs To The Wastewater Treatment Holding Pond At International Paper Franklin Mill, Melissa Riddick Wolford

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

While nitrogen is an essential nutrient in aquatic systems, elevated levels of nitrogen can be fatal to many aquatic organisms including fish and other organisms that are in the river. Elevated levels of ammonia have been recently (2001-2002) detected in the water released from a wastewater treatment system holding pond at International Paper Franklin, Virginia and are a concern for the receiving system. The elevated ammonia concentrations observed in previous years were not observed in 2003, due likely to increased precipitation and the occurrence of a major hurricane (Hurricane Isabel) during the sampling period that may have influenced the observations. …

Extension Of A Cross-Shore Beach Profile Model For Coarse Materials And Steep Slopes, Kentaro Hayashi Apr 2004

Extension Of A Cross-Shore Beach Profile Model For Coarse Materials And Steep Slopes, Kentaro Hayashi

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In the present SBEACH model, the effective grain size can range from 0.13 to 1.0 mm. The grain size greatly influences three main processes of the model: fall velocity, sediment transport direction, and sediment transport rate. First, the theory of the fall velocity, which is called Hallermeier's formula in the SPM (1984), is replaced by the new theory in the CEM (2002). Second, the sediment transport direction is changed by two criteria. One was developed by Sunamura and Horikawa (1974). This theory includes the beach slope. The other was derived by Ahrens and Hands (2000). The effective grain size range …

Laser Ignition Of Pulverized Coals, John C. Chen, Masayuki Taniguchi, Kiyoshi Narato, Kazuyuki Ito

Mechanical Engineering

We present a novel experiment to study the ignition of pulverized coal. A dilute stream of particles is dropped into a laminar, upward-flow wind tunnel with a quartz test section. The gas stream is not preheated. A single pulse from a Nd:YAG laser is focused through the tunnel and ignites the fuel. The transparent test section and cool walls allow for optical detection of the ignition process. In this article we describe the experiment and demonstrate its capabilities by observing the ignition behavior of spherical, amorphous-carbon particles and two coals: an anthracite are a high-volatile bituminous coal. The ignition behaviors …

This maximum loading is obtained from front axle loading calculation on particular operating condition. That is, vehicle is braking while cornering in down hill. From previous vehicle loading calculation, we get a number of loading values on different speed and deceleration. At the end, we get a value of speed and deceleration that guarantee the vehicle safety if it is braking while cornering in down hill. As comparison, loading calculation …

Pid Fuzzy Logic Controller System For Dc Motor Speed Control, H. Samsul Bachri M. Apr 2004

Pid Fuzzy Logic Controller System For Dc Motor Speed Control, H. Samsul Bachri M.

Makara Journal of Technology

PID Fuzzy Logic Controller System for DC Motor Speed Control. A good controller system must have resilience to disturbance and must be able to response quickly and accurately. Problem usually appears when PID controller system was built sensitively hence the system’s respon to the disturbance will yield big overshot/undershot then the possibility of oscillation to be happened is excelsior. When the controller system was built insensitively, the overshot/undershot will be small but the recovery time will be longer. Hybrid controller system could overcome those problems by combining PID control system with fuzzy logic. The main control of this system is …

Modeling And Validation Of A Brake Hose, Jai Thomas Apr 2004

Modeling And Validation Of A Brake Hose, Jai Thomas

Masters Theses

Various computer aided design (CAD) softwares have the capability to depict rigid bodies in space accurately. However, the same is not true for the flexible components. This is because flexible components in an automobile are subject to large elastic deformations during the movement of the rigid components to which they are attached.

This research details the application of the principles of computation of the orientation of entities in a simplified coordinate system, vector mathematics, the file I/O features and structured C++ programming to view the rubber hose in CAD after modeling the hose using simulation software. Further validation of the …

Source Level Debugging Of Circuits Synthesized From High Level Language Descriptions, Karl S. Hemmert Apr 2004

Source Level Debugging Of Circuits Synthesized From High Level Language Descriptions, Karl S. Hemmert

Theses and Dissertations

The rapid increase in the density of modern FPGAs has allowed ever increasingly complex designs to be mapped to FPGAs. However, this increase in logic resources is accompanied by an increase in the complexity of describing and verifying the operation of an application. This has prompted the search for new approaches to the design, debug and verification of circuits. The desire to find more effecient approaches to designing these large FPGA circuits has led to the creation of synthesizing compilers that can create hardware from high-level descriptions based on general purpose programming languages. Being able to describe the application at …

An Electromagnetic Model For Evaluating Temporal Water Content Distribution And Movement In Cyclically Soaked Mortar, Shanup Peer, K. E. Kurtis, R. Zoughi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Evaluation of water distribution and its temporal movement in cement-based materials is important for assessing cement hydration, curing, and long-term performance. From a practical standpoint, it is also important to obtain this information nondestructively. Near-field microwave nondestructive evaluation methods have proven effective for evaluation of cement-based materials for their various mixture properties, including the detection of salt added to the mixing water and chloride ions entering these materials through exposure to salt water solutions. Electromagnetic modeling of the interaction of microwave signals with moist cement-based materials can provide the necessary insight to evaluate water content distribution and movement in these …
