The Use Of Monitoring Data And Geologic Documentation As A Basis For Defining Rock Mass Behavior Types For Tunnelling, Edward A. Button, Wulf Schubert, Gunter Riedmueller

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The use of geodetic surveying to measure the absolute 3-D tunnel displacements has provided new opportunities to evaluate the system behavior and interpret the rock mass behavior associated with tunneling. For a meaningful case history evaluation it is necessary to have consistent and quality documentation covering the excavation and support sequence, the geological conditions, as well as the displacement measurements. Combing this data allows the rock mass behavior type to be evaluated. In contrast to many available rock mass characterization or classification procedures, the procedure introduced by the Austrian Society for Geomechanics within the Guideline for the Design and Construction …

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Jharia Coalfield, in India, is a prime storehouse of the coking coal. It contains as many as thirty contiguous seams. Multiplicity of seams has contributed to a number of problems, fire, inundated workings, goaf out area and disturbed strata condition. However, due to various geotechnical problems, it was not possible to fully extract coal by underground mining method. Opencast mining is now planned for extraction of virgin coal seams upto an ultimate depth of 500 m for ensuring maximum resources recovery. There are various modeling methods to analyze the behaviour of slopes. To achieve the objective for ensuring the safe …

Tilting Of A Historic Façade During Construction Works – Geotechnical Cause And Effect On The Stiffening System, Rolf Katzenbach, Alexandra Weidle, Helmut Hoffmann

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This article reports on a 5-storey historic building which was completely cored to build a new one inside its historic façades. A bending resistant steel framework was installed inside the construction ground and tied positively with the façades to stiffen them during construction works. Vertical loads were taken by a jet grouting gravity retaining wall, which also acted as supporting system for the building pit. To carry lateral loads the framework was tied back into the ground by vertical and inclined pre-stressed anchors. Several months after installing the gravity walls, just after the end of the demolition works and after …

Improvement Of Fine Sand Properties With Water Soluble Epoxy Resin Grouts, Costas Anagnostopoulos, Evangelos Stavridakis, Ioannis Grammatikopoulos

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

It is generally accepted, that only chemical grouts or solutions are available to penetrate and fill narrow joints or soils with very small pore size. During the last 30 years, a few hundreds of different compounds have been used for this purpose. Such materials show a wide spectrum of properties. Epoxy resins are some of the common compounds which are used in chemical grouting due to their high strength and durability against mechanical or physical erosion. In this paper, the improvement of physical and mechanical properties of fine sand injected with a water soluble, two component epoxy resin is investigated. …

Soil Improvement Using Deep Dynamic Compaction, Omar M. Alsamman, George P. Kelley

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The use of a conventional shallow foundation system in the construction of a baseball stadium on the Delaware River waterfront was only possible by improvement of existing soils using deep dynamic compaction (DDC). Subsurface conditions at the site consisted of 5 ft to 15 ft of miscellaneous fill materials overlying up to 10 ft of soft river sediments over dense sand. Numerous obstructions and old foundations were found in the fill making pile driving difficult and extremely expensive. Several foundation designs and ground improvement alternatives were evaluated for building support. A deep dynamic compaction soil improvement plan was designed to …

Design Of Lightweight Fills For Road Embankments On Boston's Central Artery/Tunnel Project, Hany L. Riad, Anthony L. Ricci, Peter W. Osborn, David A. D'Angelo, John S. Horvath Apr 2004

Design Of Lightweight Fills For Road Embankments On Boston's Central Artery/Tunnel Project, Hany L. Riad, Anthony L. Ricci, Peter W. Osborn, David A. D'Angelo, John S. Horvath

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The use of lightweight-fill materials for highway construction increased significantly worldwide during the 1990s. Predominant with this trend was the increased use of cellular geosynthetics (geofoams and geocombs), especially block-molded expanded polystyrene (EPS) geofoam, on highway and bridge embankments. EPS geofoam is increasingly recognized as an important tool for reducing overall cost of highways through "accelerated construction". Thus, it was appropriate that lightweight-fill materials, mostly EPS, were the materials of choice on Boston’s Central Artery/Tunnel (CA/T) Project, commonly known as the "Big Dig". EPS highway embankments have been constructed, as part of a cost-and schedule-initiative, replacing the original design concepts …

A Methodology To Predict The Remaining Service Life Of Cscps, Jay N. Meegoda, Thomas M. Juliano, Mutiu G. Ayoola, Sunil Dhar

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Despite the fact that corrugated steel culvert pipe (CSCP) is widely used for stream crossings and drainage in many transportation systems in the US, historically, very little has been done regarding its condition assessment and planned maintenance. This research provides a methodology for developing a comprehensive plan for inspection, cleaning, condition assessment and prediction of remaining service of CSCP. Inspection frequency guidelines were developed based upon culvert size, age, importance and environmental factors, e.g., corrosion and erosion, bed load and pH. The CSCPs are classified into three levels according to increasing need for inspection, e.g., annual inspections are recommended for …

Errors In Design Leading To Pile Failures During Seismic Liquefaction, Subhamoy Bhattacharya, Malcolm Bolton Apr 2004

Errors In Design Leading To Pile Failures During Seismic Liquefaction, Subhamoy Bhattacharya, Malcolm Bolton

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Collapse of piled foundations in liquefiable soils has been observed in the majority of the recent strong earthquakes despite the fact that a large margin of safety is employed in their design. This paper critically reviews the current design methods and the underlying mechanism behind them. The current method of pile design under earthquake loading is based on a bending mechanism where the inertia and slope movement (lateral spreading) induce bending in the pile. This paper shows that this hypothesis of pile failure cannot explain some observations of pile failure. It has been identified that the current design codes of …

One-Dimensional Shear Wave Profiling For V30 And Nehrp Soil Classification Using The Refraction Microtremor (Remi) Method, Satish Pullammanappallil, William Honjas, John N. Louie Apr 2004

One-Dimensional Shear Wave Profiling For V30 And Nehrp Soil Classification Using The Refraction Microtremor (Remi) Method, Satish Pullammanappallil, William Honjas, John N. Louie

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The refraction microtremor (ReMi) method uses standard P-wave, refraction recording equipment to record ambient noise and then uses a wavefield transformation to produce Rayleigh wave dispersion curves from which average one-dimensional shear-wave profile of the subsurface can be derived. The combination of commonly available equipment, simple recording with no source, a wavefield transformation data processing technique, and an interactive Rayleigh-wave dispersion modeling tool exploits the most effective aspects of the microtremor, spectral analysis of surface wave (SASW), and multichannel analysis of surface wave (MASW) techniques. It overcomes several of the problems afflicting other techniques for estimating shallow shear velocities that …

Success And Failure In Predicting Pile Performance, Harry G. Poulos

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This paper reviews the anatomy of predictions for pile and pile group performance, and discusses the various facets of the prediction process. A series of case histories is presented in which successful predictions were made of the pile performance. Most of these cases involve a single pile or a small group of piles. A further series of case histories is then discussed in which the predictions were far less successful. Most of these cases involve larger pile groups. The reasons for the success or otherwise of the predictions are discussed, and it is concluded that successful predictions require a combination …

An Evaluation Of The Load-Displacement Behavior And Load Test Interpretation Of Micropiles In Rock, Andrew G. Cushing, Scott A. Stonecheck, Bradley D. Campbell, Scott D. Dodds Apr 2004

An Evaluation Of The Load-Displacement Behavior And Load Test Interpretation Of Micropiles In Rock, Andrew G. Cushing, Scott A. Stonecheck, Bradley D. Campbell, Scott D. Dodds

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

This paper summarizes a series of never-before reported axial compression load tests conducted on single micropiles that are embedded in or constructed on rock. These data are augmented by load tests on similar micropiles that have been reported by others. The observed displacements at the maximum test load (QMAX) and reported unfactored design load (QDL) are summarized. In addition, the small-strain load-displacement behavior of these foundations is evaluated by comparing the initial tangent slope (IS) to the theoretical elastic slope (ES), which is calculated by modeling the micropile as a free-standing column exhibiting fully -composite behavior. The data demonstrate that …
