Secure Remote Control And Configuration Of Fpx Platform In Gigabit Ethernet Environment, Haoyu Song Aug 2003

Secure Remote Control And Configuration Of Fpx Platform In Gigabit Ethernet Environment, Haoyu Song

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Because of its flexibility and high performance, reconfigurable logic functions implemented on the Field-programmable Port Extender (FPX ) are well suited for implementing network processing such as packet classification, filtering and intrusion detection functions. This project focuses on two key aspects of the FPX system. One is providing a Gigabit Ethernet interface by designing logic for a FPGA which is located on a line card. Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) packets are handled in hardware and Ethernet frames are processed and transformed into cells suitable for standard FPX application. The other effort is to provide a secure channel to enable remote …

Imagery Chain Assessment For Feature Extraction, Rufus H. Cofer, Samuel Peter Kozaitis Aug 2003

Imagery Chain Assessment For Feature Extraction, Rufus H. Cofer, Samuel Peter Kozaitis

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

It is shown that the image chain has important effects upon the quality of feature extraction. Exact analytic ROC results are given for the case where arbitrary multivariate normal imagery is passed to a Bayesian feature detector designed for multivariate normal imagery with a diagonal covariance matrix. Plots are provided to allow direct visual inspection of many of the more readily apparent effects. Also shown is an analytic tradeoff that says doubling background contrast is equal to halving sensor to scene distance or sensor noise. It is also shown that the results provide a lower bound to the ROC of …

Wavelet-Based Image Compression Using Perceptual Distortion Metric, Hemen Goswami, Samuel Peter Kozaitis Aug 2003

Wavelet-Based Image Compression Using Perceptual Distortion Metric, Hemen Goswami, Samuel Peter Kozaitis

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Bits are allocated to various subbands to minimize a particular cost function to achieve compression in subband coding. The most common cost function is the L2 norm based on mean squared error (MSE). However, the MSE often fails to correspond to the perceptual quality of the image, especially at low bit rate. In this paper, we allocate bits into various subbands by minimizing the Minkowsky metric - a commonly used perceptual distortion measure. We then design the quantizer for each subband independent of each other based on the allocated bits. Experimental results indicate improved perceptual quality for the compressed images …

Incorporating Functionally Graded Materials And Precipitation Hardening Into Microstructure Sensitive Design, Mark Edward Lyon

Theses and Dissertations

The methods of MSD are applied to the design of functionally graded materials. Analysis models are presented to allow the design of compliant derailleur for a case study and constraints are placed on the design. Several methods are presented for relating elements of the microstructure to the properties of the material, including Taylor yield theory, Hill elastic bounds, and precipitation hardening.

Applying n-point statistics to the MSD framework is also discussed. Some results are presented for the information content of the 2-point correlation statistics that follow from the methods used to integrate functionally graded materials into MSD.

For the compliant …

Design And Analysis Of End-Effector Systems For Scribing On Silicon, Bennion Rhead Cannon Aug 2003

Design And Analysis Of End-Effector Systems For Scribing On Silicon, Bennion Rhead Cannon

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates end-effector systems used in a chemomechanical scribing process. Chemomechanical scribing is a method of patterning silicon to selectively deposit a monolayer of material on the surface of the silicon. This thesis details the development of a unique end-effector for chemomechanical scribing using a compliant mechanism solution. The end-effector is developed to scribe lines that have uniform geometry and produce less chipping on the surface of the silicon. The resulting scribing mechanism is passively controlled, has high lateral stiffness, and low axial stiffness. The mechanism is analyzed using the pseudo-rigid-body model and linear-elastic beam method to determine the …

Application Of A Diagnostic Tool In Laser Aided Manufacturing Processes, Sashikanth Prakash, Mallikharjuna Rao Boddu, Frank W. Liou

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Lasers play a vital role in producing parts with high dimensional accuracy, strength and quality in today's rapid prototyping industry. In the process of Laser Metal Deposition, many problems are encountered where the part quality does not meet the required standards. This could be due to the nonconformity of control parameters or unnecessary interactions between the control factors. This paper discusses the implementation of Dr. Genichi Taguchiï's optimization techniques using Design of Experiments (DOE) where a series of fractional factorial experiments are performed on the laser deposition process. The results from these experiments are evaluated with respect to the rate …

Modeling For The Control Of The Laser Aided Manufacturing Process (Lamp), Mallikharjuna R. Boddu, Vishnu P. Thayalan, Robert G. Landers

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Many state-of-the-art Rapid Prototyping (RP) technologies adopt lasers to fabricate 3-D solid parts by material deposition in layers. The ability of these RP technologies to control the process requires a thorough understanding of the process mechanics. This paper presents the analysis of an analytical, dynamic model explaining the complex phenomenon of Laser Aided Manufacturing Process (LAMP). The equilibrium of the dynamic model is analyzed and dynamic simulations are performed to determine its stability characteristics. This model forms the basis for the real-time control of the LAMP.

Process Control Of Laser Metal Deposition Manufacturing -- A Simulation Study, Robert G. Landers Aug 2003

Process Control Of Laser Metal Deposition Manufacturing -- A Simulation Study, Robert G. Landers

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The laser metal deposition process is a rapid manufacturing operation capable of producing functional prototypes with complex geometries and thin sections. This process inherently contains significant uncertainties and, therefore, extensive experimentation must be performed to determine suitable process parameters. An alternative is to directly control the process on-line using feedback control methodologies. In this paper, a nonlinear control strategy based on feedback linearization is created to automatically regulate the bead morphology and melt pool temperature. Extensive simulation studies are conducted to validate the control strategy.

Ultrasound Technique For Prediction Of Statistical Characteristics Of Grid-Generated Turbulence, Tatiana A. Andreeva, William W. Durgin Aug 2003

Ultrasound Technique For Prediction Of Statistical Characteristics Of Grid-Generated Turbulence, Tatiana A. Andreeva, William W. Durgin

Office of the Provost Scholarship

Ultrasonic measurement techniques can be used to determine some characteristics of turbulent flows. In this work measurements of the difference in propagation times of ultrasonic waves along two paths are combined with the Kolmogorov (2/3)-power law to study characteristics of grid-generated turbulence. The paper focuses on ultrasonic measurements of turbulent flow using the travel-time technique. The present research is of interest from two points of view. First, it demonstrates an ultrasonic method of investigation of turbulence, and second, it furthers understanding of the effect of turbulence on sound propagation.

Fifty Years Of Hypersonics: Where We've Been, Where We're Going, John J. Bertin, Russell M. Cummings Aug 2003

Fifty Years Of Hypersonics: Where We've Been, Where We're Going, John J. Bertin, Russell M. Cummings

Aerospace Engineering

Hypersonic flight has been with us since 22 September 1963, when Robert M. White flew the North American X-15 at 4520 mph at an altitude of 354,200 ft—a Mach number of 6.7! This remarkable achievement was accomplished over six decades due to intensive research and development by a large number of scientists and engineers. In spite of that momentous achievement, designers have found the hypersonic environment to be harsh and non-forgiving. New programs since the 1960s have often uncovered the unknown unknowns, usually the hard way—early flights of new systems have often revealed problems of which the designers were …

A Modal Pushover Analysis Procedure To Estimate Seismic Demands For Unsymmetric-Plan Buildings: Theory And Preliminary Evaluation, Anil K. Chopra, Rakesh K. Goel Aug 2003

A Modal Pushover Analysis Procedure To Estimate Seismic Demands For Unsymmetric-Plan Buildings: Theory And Preliminary Evaluation, Anil K. Chopra, Rakesh K. Goel

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Based on structural dynamics theory, the modal pushover analysis procedure (MPA) retains the conceptual simplicity of current procedures with invariant force distribution, now common in structural engineering practice. The MPA procedure for estimating seismic demands is extended to unsymmetric-plan buildings. In the MPA procedure, the seismic demand due to individual terms in the modal expansion of the effective earthquake forces is determined by nonlinear static analysis using the inertia force distribution for each mode, which for unsymmetric buildings includes two lateral forces and torque at each floor level. These “modal” demands due to the first few terms of the modal …

Revisiting The Fresnel Coefficients For Uniform Plane Wave Propagation Across A Nonchiral, Reciprocal And Chiral, Nonreciprocal Interface, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Sumit Nema

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The problem of EM wave propagation in non-reciprocal chiral media has been studied by several investigators. In a recent approach, a dual-transform technique has been developed to study the problem of such propagation under paraxial and slow-envelope variation conditions.

In this paper, we first outline some of the results obtained using the dual transform technique for arbitrary boundary conditions within the left boundary of a semi-infinite, non-reciprocal chiral medium for a uniform plane wave, and a fundamental Gaussian-profiled beam. Next, we explore the problem of a uniform EM wave incident at an oblique angle at an interface between a reciprocal, …

New Fuzzy Performance Indices For Reliability Analysis Of Water Supply Systems, Ibrahim El-Baroudy, Slobodan P. Simonovic

Water Resources Research Report

Large and complex engineering systems are subject to wide range of possible future loads and conditions. Uncertainty associated with the quantification of these potential conditions is imposing a great challenge to systems‘ design, planning and management. Therefore, the assurance of satisfactory and reliable system performance cannot be simply achieved.

Water supply systems, as typical example of these engineering systems, include collections of different types of facilities. These facilities are connected in complicated networks that extend over and serve broad geographical regions. As a result, water supply systems are at risk of temporary disruption in service due to natural hazards or …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The paper provides a simplified model of a known ESD generator that allows modeling the ESD impulses (current and fields) in CST-Microwave Studio. The model is suitable for simulating the excitation of structures by ESD, but it is not intended to predict the fields and current of an ESD generator for its development purpose. The aim is to simultaneously model the ESD generator and a susceptible structure with as few details as possible but to obtain as good a match on current and fields as possible.
