Statistical And Dempster-Shafer Techniques In Testing Structural Integrity Of Aerospace Structures, Roberto A. Osegueda, Seetharami R. Seelam, Bharat Mulupuru, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Several techniques are known for non-destructive testing of aerospace structures, such as pulse echo, Eddy current, magnetic resonance, etc. Each of these techniques detects some faults but misses others, so it is desirable to combine (fuse) the results of these techniques. Several methods of data fusion are known. To improve the quality of fault detection, we modified the straightforward statistical method as follows: (1) we computed mean and variance iteratively: detected faults are excluded form the computation on the next iteration; (2) we treated the plate's edge and the inside separately; (3) we dismissed measurements in which only one technique …
A New Cauchy-Based Black-Box Technique For Uncertainty In Risk Analysis, Vladik Kreinovich, Scott Ferson
A New Cauchy-Based Black-Box Technique For Uncertainty In Risk Analysis, Vladik Kreinovich, Scott Ferson
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Uncertainty is very important in risk analysis. A natural way to describe this uncertainty is to describe a set of possible values of each unknown quantity (this set is usually an interval), plus any additional information that we may have about the probability of different values within this set. Traditional statistical techniques deal with the situations in which we have a complete information about the probabilities; in real life, however, we often have only partial information about them. We therefore need to describe methods of handling such partial information in risk analysis. Several such techniques have been presented, often on …

Assessment Of Chloride Ingress Into Concrete, Mohamed Tamer Farouk Bassuoni
Assessment Of Chloride Ingress Into Concrete, Mohamed Tamer Farouk Bassuoni
Archived Theses and Dissertations
The corrosion of steel reinforcement has been a prime concern for concrete users. Chloride ingress into the concrete matrix disturbs the passive layers in the vicinity of steel, which results in corrosion initiation. Cementitious materials were successfully implemented in concrete mixtures to enhance their properties and minimize chloride permeability into concrete. Although numerous tests and techniques have been developed over the past years, reliable assessment of chlorides remains a challenging task. Th.is study aims at enhancing the understanding of techniques used for the assessment of chloride ingress and investigating potential correlation between these techniques. The study comprised eighteen mixtures made …

Detection Of Cracks At Rivet Holes In Thin Plates Using Lamb-Wave Scanning, Roberto A. Osegueda, Vladik Kreinovich, Soheil Nazarian, Enrique Roldan
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
This paper describes a Lamb-wave scanning method for the detection of notches simulating cracks at rivet holes in thin plates. The approach requires the generation of an ultrasonic So-Mode Lamb wave using an incident transmitter excited with a tone burst centered at a near non-dispersive frequency. Area scans are performed of a plate with a hole with a notch to generate times series information which is used to create animations illustrating the wave propagation characteristics. The time series are subject to a sifting process to obtain intrinsic mode functions which contain narrow frequency banded information of the signals. The Hilbert-Huang …

The purpose of this test report is to substantiate a more cost-competitive alternative to “box beam” and “back-to-back” headers by expanding upon the Lheader testing program that was previously conducted at the NAHB Research Center, Inc. Previous testing of double L-shaped headers indicated that these headers could be a viable alternative to the existing box-beam or back-to-back headers in lightly loaded applications. The higher capacity of the previously tested L-headers was mainly due to the fact that there is an added benefit from the top track that may be neglected in the design process. However, the application of these previous …

Analysis Of Field Permeability And Laboratory Shear Stress For Western Kentucky Parkway, Milepost 18.240 To Milepost 25.565, Caldwell-Hopkins Counties, David L. Allen
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
This report lists and discusses results of field permeability tests and laboratory shear tests on samples from a construction project on the Western Kentucky Parkway in Caldwell-Hopkins Counties. Approximately 6,500 tons of asphaltic concrete overlay placed on this project failed to meet minimum density requirements.
Field permeability tests were performed and the results showed that in areas where the mat failed to meet density requirements there was very high permeability in those locations.
The laboratory shear tests also showed that there was a direct relationship between shear strength and density. A linear elastic layer stress analysis also indicated that the …

Microwave Reflection And Dielectric Properties Of Mortar Subjected To Compression Force And Cyclically Exposed To Water And Sodium Chloride Solution, Shanup Peer, Joseph Toby Case, Eric Gallaher, K. E. Kurtis, R. Zoughi
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Corrosion of the reinforcing steel is a major cause of damage and deterioration in reinforced concrete structures such as concrete bridge decks and columns. Chloride intrusion into concrete can lead to depassivation of the steel and initiation of corrosion. Thus, it is very important to be able to nondestructively detect and evaluate the free chloride content in concrete. Near-field microwave nondestructive testing techniques, using open-ended rectangular waveguide probes, have shown great potential for evaluating various properties of concrete, including the successful detection of sodium chloride added to mortar mixing water. In this study, several mortar samples are cyclically soaked in …

Power-Bus Decoupling With Embedded Capacitance In Printed Circuit Board Design, Minjia Xu, Todd H. Hubing, Juan Chen, Thomas Van Doren, James L. Drewniak, Richard E. Dubroff
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper experimentally investigates the effectiveness of embedded capacitance for reducing power-bus noise in high-speed printed circuit board designs. Boards with embedded capacitance employ closely spaced power-return plane pairs separated by a thin layer of dielectric material. In this paper, test boards with four embedded capacitance materials are evaluated. Power-bus input impedance measurements and power-bus noise measurements are presented for boards with various dimensions and layer stack ups. Unlike discrete decoupling capacitors, whose effective frequency range is generally limited to a few hundred megahertz due to interconnect inductance, embedded capacitance was found to efficiently reduce power-bus noise over the entire …

Tree-Based Regional Broadcasting In Mesh Direct Networks, Hadeel Youssef Samaan Haddad
Archived Theses and Dissertations
In direct interconnection networks, the collective communication operation one to all, which is usually refe1Ted to as broadcasting, can be generalized to allow one source node to send a message to a rectangular region of nodes, rather than to all nodes. Most of the proposed routing algorithms for direct mesh and torus networks use a broadcast tree of unicast messages. While the Minimum Spanning Tree tree-based region broadcasting is not deadlock free, unless the network is partitioned into many virtual sub-networks, where the number of virtual channels grows exponentially with the dimension of the network, the Minimum Spanning Tree Safe …

Using Natural Systems For Wastewater Treatment At Egyptian Coastal Resorts, Hussein Yahia Zakaria
Archived Theses and Dissertations
Reuse of treated wastewater to develop landscape areas in touristic sites is a maJor consideration in any site development plan. There is a need, however to identify an alternative method of treating wastewater at these sites other than compact units which depend on mechanical and chemical processes that adversely affect the cost of development. Often overlooked is the idea that compact units also negatively impact the architectural layout in that they must be placed in a hidden location with no relation to the guest area for aesthetic reasons. The increasing use of natural treatment systems 111 various municipal and industrial …

Perspectives On Radioactive Waste Disposal: A Consideration Of Economic Efficiency And Intergenerational Equity, Helen R. Neill, Robert H. Neill
Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research
There are both internal and external pressures on the U.S. Department of Energy to reduce the estimated costs of isolating radioactive waste, $19 billion for transuranic waste at Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) and $57 billion for high level waste at Yucca Mountain. The question arises whether economic analyses would add to the decision-making process to reduce costs yet maintain the same level of radiological protection. This paper examines the advantages and disadvantages of using cost-benefit analysis (CBA), a tool used to measure economic efficiency as an input for these decisions. Using a comparative research approach, we find that CBA …

We continue to get valuable data from sputter depth profiling of steel samples. We meet weekly to discuss progress. We took depth-profiling data on D9 steel that had been exposed to LBE. This the first time we have examined this type of steel. This is important because it will enable us to separate out two effects and determine their effect on corrosion: composition of the steel vs surface preparation.
We started to plan a small experiments using a crucible of heated LBE, with the research program to be conducted at UNLV, on basic aspects of corrosion in this system. The …
