Development And Study Of The (Ag)-Ni/Cr Composite Plating With Antibacterial Properties And Corrosion Resistance, Ya-Ping Zhao, Jin-Hua Wang, Ren-He Yin, Jin Zheng, Le-Shu Yu

Journal of Electrochemistry

The 3-factor and 3-level orthogonal experiment was designed and through the comparison of the different films' antibacterial properties measured by bacterial colony counting and the corrosion resistance studied with the AC impedance method. The optimal plating conditions of the (Ag)-Ni/Cr composite plating, a novel functional plating, were determined. The results have indicated that the (Ag)-Ni/Cr composite plating is characterized by both antibacterial and corrosion resisting properties and has its wide applied prospect.

Investigations Of Smooth Function Of Polyethylene Glycol Surfactants On The Electrolessly Deposited Silver Film, Hao Tong, Zhi-Qing Qiao, Fen-Ning Jing, Meng-Ke Li, Chun-Ming Wang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Some non-ionic surfactants of Polyethylene Glycol 2000, 6000 and 20000 were used to estimate the smooth affection on the electrolessly deposited silver film. The adsorption state of the surfactants about Si/solution interface was investigated by using open circuit potential-time technology (Opt). As comparative experiments, the atomic force microscopy (AFM) was also performed to study the surface smooth effection of the surfactants. It was found that with the increasing of the carbon chain in the surfactants, the smooth effection is getting great. PEG 20000 showed the best smooth function.

Electroreduction Of Cd(Ⅱ) In Dmso And Complexation Of Cd(Ⅱ) With Coumarin Derivates, Ji-Guo Song, Hua-Can Song, Qi-Qin Yang, Yi-Wen Chen, Zun-Le Xu

Journal of Electrochemistry

Cadmium p-toluenesulfonate was synthesized and tested electrochemically for the first time. This salt can lose all the hydrated water easily and the dehydrated salt do not deliquesce in the air.Hence, the cadmium p-toluenesulfonate is suitable for the electrochemical studies in organic solvents. When the Cd(Ⅱ) reduced on Pt electrode in Cd(p-CH3C6H4SO3)2+TBAP+DMSO, underpotential deposition of cadmium occurred at first, and then cadmium deposited. 4-Methyl-7-hydroxylcoumarin and 3-aminocoumarin coordinate with Cd(Ⅱ) respectively, as a result the reductive potentials of Cd(Ⅱ) moved to the negative direction.

Regardless of parent material, milling produced moisture contents of ∼50% wet basis and fiber bulk …

Satisficing Applied To Simulated Soccer, Jay Packard Feb 2003

Satisficing Applied To Simulated Soccer, Jay Packard

Theses and Dissertations

Satisficing was introduced by the economist Herbert Simon to allow for decisions that are "good enough" when there are insufficient computational resources and knowledge to obtain the optimal outcome. Autonomous multi-agent systems often require such decision making because of the complexity and unknown factors present in such an environment. Satisficing has been extended significantly by Wynn Stirling. Through extended satisficing, he has departed from conventional approaches to autonomous multi-agent systems, based as they usually are on the assumption that each participant is motivated exclusively by its own self interest, and will therefore attempt to maximize its benefit, regardless of the …

Experimental Investigation Of Steel Corrosion In Lead Bismuth Eutectic (Lbe): Characterization, Species Identification, And Chemical Reactions, John Farley, Dale L. Perry, Allen L. Johnson Feb 2003

Experimental Investigation Of Steel Corrosion In Lead Bismuth Eutectic (Lbe): Characterization, Species Identification, And Chemical Reactions, John Farley, Dale L. Perry, Allen L. Johnson

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

The goal of the present research is to achieve a basic understanding of corrosion of steels by Lead Bismuth Eutectic (LBE). Liquid LBE is under consideration in the transmuter as both a spallation target and as a blanket coolant. There have been previous studies of LBE, especially by the Russians, who have over 80 reactor-years experience with LBE coolant in their Alpha-class submarine reactors. The Russians found that the presence of small amounts (ppm) of oxygen in the LBE significantly reduced corrosion. However, a fundamental understanding and verification of its role in the corrosion of steels is still very incomplete. …

We report on the performance of AlGaN/GaN/AlN heterostructurefield-effect transistors(HFETs) grown over slightly-off c-axis, single-crystal, bulk AlN substrates. Dc and rf characteristics of these devices were comparable to HFETs grown on semi-insulating SiC. The obtained results demonstrate that bulk AlN substrates are suitable for fabricating high-power microwave AlGaN/GaN transistors.

Relaxation Of A Rubbed Polystyrene Surface, Alexander D. Schwab, Ali Dhinojwala Feb 2003

Relaxation Of A Rubbed Polystyrene Surface, Alexander D. Schwab, Ali Dhinojwala

College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering

The relaxation dynamics of a rubbed polystyrene (PS) surface have been characterized using infrared-visible sum frequency generation spectroscopy (SFG). The SFG results were compared with previous relaxation of retardation measurements, and the results show that the rubbed PS surface has the same T(g) as the bulk where T(g) is defined as tau(T(g))=5 s, however, the surface has a lower activation energy (DeltaE) and a larger stretching exponent (beta(KWW)) than bulk PS. This indicates that the surface region relaxes more quickly than the bulk. The thickness of this region of lower DeltaE and larger beta(KWW) is estimated to be roughly 12 …

Towards A Performance Model For Special Purpose Orb Middleware, Venkita Subramonian, Guoliang Xing, Christopher Gill, Ron Cytron Feb 2003

Towards A Performance Model For Special Purpose Orb Middleware, Venkita Subramonian, Guoliang Xing, Christopher Gill, Ron Cytron

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

General purpose middleware has been shown effective in meeting diverse functional requirements for a wide range of distributed systems. Advanced middleware projects have also supported single quality-of-service dimensions such as real-time, fault tolerance, or small memory foot-print. However, there is limited experience supporting multiple quality-of-service dimensions in middleware to meet the needs of special purpose applications. Even though general purpose middleware can cover an entire spectrum of functionality by supporting the union of all features required by each application, this approach breaks down for distributed real-time and embedded sys-tems. For example, the breadth of features supported may interfere with small …

Out-Of-Plane Exchange Coupling Between Epitaxial Ni(50 Å) And Nio(600 Å) Bilayers, Z.Y. Liu, Shireen Adenwalla Feb 2003

Out-Of-Plane Exchange Coupling Between Epitaxial Ni(50 Å) And Nio(600 Å) Bilayers, Z.Y. Liu, Shireen Adenwalla

Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Faculty Publications

We have investigated the exchange coupling between an epitaxial Ni (50 Å) film with an out-of-plane magnetic easy axis and a NiO (600 Å) film by polar magneto-optic Kerr-effect measurements. The temperature dependences of exchange field HE for both as-deposited and field-cooled states exhibit the same blocking temperature TB~130 °C. The exchange field HE for the field-cooled state is lower than that for the as-deposited state. The hard-axis in-plane loop shows a much smaller value of HE. No coercivity enhancement is observed. The data are suggestive of linear coupling across the ferromagnet/antiferromagnet interface.

A second portion of the project is to streamline and improve an integral part of the overall systems model, which is the software package AMUSE. AMUSE analyzes the UREX process and other related solvent extraction processes and defines many of the process streams that are integral …

Measuring The Effect Of Airway Pressure On Pulmonary Arterial Diameter In The Intact Rat Lung, Robert C. Molthen, Steven Thomas Haworth, Amy Heinrich, Christopher A. Dawson Feb 2003

Measuring The Effect Of Airway Pressure On Pulmonary Arterial Diameter In The Intact Rat Lung, Robert C. Molthen, Steven Thomas Haworth, Amy Heinrich, Christopher A. Dawson

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

To study the relationship between transpulomnary [sic] pressure (Ptp), intravascular pressure (Pv), and the pulmonary arterial tree structure, morphometric measurements of pulmonary arterial trees were made in intact lungs from Sprague-Dawley rats. Using cone beam micro-CT and techniques we developed for imaging small animal lungs, volumetric CT data were acquired for Ptp from 0 - 12 mmHg and Pv from 5 - 30 mmHg. The diameter, D (measured range approximately 0.08-2.0 mm), vs. pressure, P, relation can be described by D(P) = D(0)(1+ α P), where α is a distensibility coefficient. Unlike studies performed in larger animals, where changes in …

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Small animal imaging is experiencing rapid development due to its importance in providing high-throughput phenotypic data for functional genomics studies. We have developed a single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) system to image the pulmonary perfusion distribution in the rat. A standard gamma camera, equipped with a pinhole collimator, was used to acquire SPECT projection images at 40 sec/view of the rat thorax following injection of Tc99m labeled albumin that accumulated in the rat's lungs. A voxel-driven, ordered-subset expectation maximization reconstruction was implemented. Following SPECT imaging, the rat was imaged using micro-CT with Feldkamp conebeam reconstruction. The two reconstructed image …

Twinscan: A Software Package For Homology-Based Gene Prediction, Paul Flicek Feb 2003

Twinscan: A Software Package For Homology-Based Gene Prediction, Paul Flicek

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

A complete mapping from genome to proteome would constitute a foundation for genome-based biology and provide targets for pharmaceutical and therapeutic intervention. This is one reason gene structure prediction has been a major subfield of computational biology for over 20 years. Many of the widely used gene prediction systems were developed in the 1990s and are unable to take advantage of the revolution in comparative genomics brought on by the sequencing of the entire genomes of an increasing numbers of vertebrates. Twinscan is a new system for high-throughput gene-structure prediction that exploits the patterns of conservation observed in alignments between …

Transgenic Non-Human Mammals Expressing Human Coagulation Factor Viii And Von Willebrand Factor, Henryk Lubon, William N. Drohan, William H. Velander Feb 2003

Transgenic Non-Human Mammals Expressing Human Coagulation Factor Viii And Von Willebrand Factor, Henryk Lubon, William N. Drohan, William H. Velander

Papers in Biotechnology

A non-human transgenic mammalian animal, as described above, contains an exogenous double stranded DNA sequence stably integrated into the genome of the animal, which comprises cis-acting regulatory units operably linked to a DNA sequence encoding human Factor VIII protein and a signal peptide, where the cis-acting regulatory units are active in mammary gland cells and the signal peptide is active in directing newly expressed Factor VIII into the milk of the animal. The promoter may be a milk protein promoter such as for whey acidic protein, casein, lactalbumin, or beta-lactoglobulin promoter. The transgenic mammals are preferably farm animals, for example, …

Orientation Of Self-Assembled Block Copolymer Cylinders Perpendicular To Electric Field In Mesoscale Film, S. Elhadj, J. W. Woody, V. S. Niu, Ravi F. Saraf Feb 2003

Orientation Of Self-Assembled Block Copolymer Cylinders Perpendicular To Electric Field In Mesoscale Film, S. Elhadj, J. W. Woody, V. S. Niu, Ravi F. Saraf

Ravi Saraf Publications

The possibility of using self-assembled films of block polymers as templates to fabricate nanoscale structures for devices has attracted great attention towards this class of material. Self-assembly of a block copolymer can be directed by using an electric field to orient features (i.e., ~10-nm-diam cylinders) parallel to the electric field, making the material more attractive as a nanoscale lithography mask. In this letter we describe an approach to influence the electric field orientation phenomena by interfacial effects. As a result, the 15-nm-diam polystyrene cylinders of the polystyrene–polyisoprene–polystyrene triblock copolymer orient perpendicular to the electric field. The described approach along with …

Time Aliasing Methods Of Spectrum Estimation, Jason F. Dahl Feb 2003

Time Aliasing Methods Of Spectrum Estimation, Jason F. Dahl

Theses and Dissertations

Time aliasing methods of spectrum estimation alter the time representation of a signal for the purpose of improving its frequency domain representation. Time aliasing allows characteristics of longer time window functions to be used with shorter DFT length. Windows designed specifically for use with time aliasing have improved properties compared to conventional windows. Many previous uses of time aliasing, including overlap-and-add methods of digital filtering, have focused on the elimination of time aliasing effects in the frequency domain in order to improve the representation of reconstructed signals in the time domain and have not addressed the issues associated with spectrum …

Index-Matched Boundary Techniques For The Elimination Of Acoustical Resonances, Jack H. Parker, Bradley D. Duncan Feb 2003

Index-Matched Boundary Techniques For The Elimination Of Acoustical Resonances, Jack H. Parker, Bradley D. Duncan

Electro-Optics and Photonics Faculty Publications

We extend the principle of optical index of refraction to apply the concept of acoustical index for transverse acoustical wave propagation in strings. The relationship between acoustical index and mass density of the acoustic material is developed. With this theoretical link established, classic index-matching techniques are explored at acoustical boundaries. Proper selection of boundary interface segments leads to the elimination of resonant vibrationalmodes that occur in rigidly supported strings, while maintaining the nonresonant vibration response.
