Pyrolusite (β-MnO_2(s)) was used to assess the influence of a competitive electron acceptor on the kinetics of reduction of aqueous uranyl carbonate by a dissimilatory metal-reducing bacterium (DMRB), Shewanella putrefaciens strain CN32. The enzymatic reduction of U(VI) and β-MnO_2(s) and the abiotic redox reaction between β-MnO_2(s) and biogenic uraninite (UO_2(s)) were independently investigated to allow for interpretation of studies of U(VI) bioreduction in the presence of β-MnO_2(s). Research Highlightsfrom A Large Scale Residential Monitoring Study In A Hot Climate, Florida Solar Energy Center, Danny Parker

This load research project by a large utility has monitored 204 residences in Central Florida, collecting detailed electricity end-use load data. In each home, 15-minute electric demand data is obtained on total electric power, space heating, cooling, water heating, dryers, cooking and pool energy use. Interior and exterior temperatures were also recorded. This is similar to other detailed end-use data monitored in the U.S. Pacific Northwest in the ELCAP project (Pratt et al., 1989) and the PG&E Appliance Metering Project (Brodsky and McNicoll, 1987). However these data are of a more recent vintage and from a cooling dominated climate.

The test data contained in this report are a tabulation of the results of a series of tests. Due to the restricted format of these pages, only a limited amount of data and not all of the tractor specifications are included. The full OECD report contains usually about 30 pages of data and specifications. The test data were obtained for each tractor under similar conditions and therefore, provide a means of comparison of performance based on a limited set of reported data.

Nesting male gulf toadfish Opsanus beta produce a boatwhistle advertisement call used in male–male competition and to attract females and an agonistic grunt call. The grunt is a short-duration pulsatile call, and the boatwhistle is a complex call typically consisting of zero to three introductory grunts, a long tonal boop note, and zero to three shorter boops. The beginning of the boop note is also gruntlike. Anomalous boatwhistles contain a short-duration grunt embedded in the tonal portion of the boop or between an introductory grunt and the boop. Embedded grunts have sound-pressure levels and frequency spectra that correspond with those …

The quality of radio astronomical images drastically depends on where we place the radio telescopes. During the design of the Very Large Array, it was empirically shown that the power law design, in which n-th antenna is placed at a distance n^b from the center, leads to the best image quality. In this paper, we provide a theoretical justification for this empirical fact.

Some photos of the 2001 World Trade Center fire reveal a "face" in the smoke which was interpreted, by some people, as the face of Satan. Most journalists believe, however, that the visible smoke configuration can be explained by natural processes, and that the visible "face" is similar to animal shapes that are sometimes observed in the clouds. In this paper, we present a simple geometric analysis that supports this natural-process explanation.

Logical inference starts with concluding that if B implies A, and B is true, then A is true as well. To describe probabilistic inference rules, we must therefore define the probability of an implication "A if B". There exist two different approaches to defining this probability, and these approaches lead to different probabilistic inference rules: We may interpret the probability of an implication as the conditional probability P(A|B), in which case we get Bayesian inference. We may also interpret this probability as the probability of the material implication "A or not B", in which case we get different inference rules. …

Traditionally, most planning research in AI was concentrated on systems whose state can be characterized by discrete-valued fluents. In many practical applications, however, we want to control systems (like robots) whose state can only be described if we used continuous variables (like coordinates). Planning for such systems corresponds, crudely speaking, to Level 2 of the planing language PDDL2.1. In this paper, we analyze the computational complexity of such planning problems.

We continue our investigation of joint beamforming and transmit diversity with space-time block coding. In particular, the performance of a four-element array antenna is considered, in the context of an indoor wireless communication system. The main contribution is to show that transmit diversity may be practically achieved, even with correlated beams produced by a sparse array antenna.

In the semiconductor and pharmaceutical industries, care is taken to prevent any contribution to product contamination or corrosion from the fluid delivery systems. Electropolished 316L stainless steel has become the industry standard due to its superior corrosion resistance. However, welding of the tubing often leads to discoloration in the heat affected zone (HAZ) which can lead to corrosion. Electropolished specimens from various lots of 316L stainless steel tubing were welded under identical parameters, but with varying concentrations of oxygen leaked into the argon purge gas during the welding, simulating on-site welding conditions. This project was started with JDK Version 1.0 and was later upgraded to version JDK Version 1.2.2, to create a graphical user interface using the Abstract Window Toolkit (AWT) to a HyperCard bibliography of software engineering. The bibliographic index tool is designed to facilitate searching for text and is run as a Java applet. It presents an alphabetically ordered list of author names and subjects. With the bibliography index tool one can manipulate a bibliographic list directly over the World Wide Web on a computer that lists electronic bibliographies.

Motivated by the multimodal nature of speech, the visual component is considered to yield information that is not always present in the acoustic signal and enables improved system performance over acoustic-only methods, especially in noisy environments.
