Quicklook Air Mobility Modeling, Mustafa K. Pektas
Quicklook Air Mobility Modeling, Mustafa K. Pektas
Theses and Dissertations
This research is a framework for understanding issues in modeling the military aspect of space, with particular regard to capturing its value. Space power is a difficult and far-reaching topic, with implications that go beyond the military aspects. The United States military increasingly relies on space-based systems and information for success in daily operations. Telecommunications, navigation and timing, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and weather prediction are instances of services that have become dependent on satellite systems. If this reliance on space is not fully understood, U.S. national security will be at risk as the result of space information degradation or denial. …

Theses and Dissertations
In this work goal programming is used to solve a minimum cost multicommodity network flow problem with multiple goals. A single telecommunication network with multiple commodities (e.g., voice, video, data, etc.) flowing over it is analyzed. This network consists of: linear objective function, linear cost arcs, fixed capacities, specific origin-destination pairs for each commodity. A multicommodity network flow problem with goals can be successfully modeled using linear goal programming techniques. When properly modeled, network flow techniques may be employed to exploit the pure network structure of a multicommodity network flow problem with goals. Lagrangian relaxation captures the essence of the …

A Stable Self-Tuning Fuzzy Logic Control System For Industrial Temperature Regulation, Zhiqiang Gao, Thomas A. Trautzsch, James G. Dawson
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
A closed-loop control system incorporating fuzzy logic has been developed for a class of industrial temperature control problems. A unique fuzzy logic controller (FLC) structure with an efficient realization and a small rule base that can be easily implemented in existing industrial controllers was proposed. The potential of FLC in both software simulation and hardware test in an industrial setting was demonstrated. This includes compensating for thermo mass changes in the system, dealing with unknown and variable delays, operating at very different temperature set points without retuning, etc. It is achieved by implementing, in the FLC, a classical control strategy …

Diagnostics Of Bar And End-Ring Connector Breakage Faults In Polyphase Induction Motors Through A Novel Dual Track Of Time-Series Data Mining And Time-Stepping Coupled Fe-State Space Modeling, Richard J. Povinelli, John F. Bangura, Nabeel Demerdash, Ronald H. Brown
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
This paper develops the fundamental foundations of a technique for detection of faults in induction motors that is not based on the traditional Fourier transform frequency domain approach. The technique can extensively and economically characterize and predict faults from the induction machine adjustable speed drive design data. This is done through the development of dual-track proof-of-principle studies of fault simulation and identification. These studies are performed using our proven Time Stepping Coupled Finite Element-State Space method to generate fault case data. Then, the fault cases are classified by their inherent characteristics, so-called “signatures” or “fingerprints.” These fault signatures are extracted …

Wildfire spread in living vegetation such as chaparral in California and eucalyptus forests in Australia often causes significant damage to infrastructure and ecosystems. A physically based empirical model to predict fire spread rate is used in the United States to assist in a variety of fire management operations. The spread model does not adequately describe the chemical processes of combustion in live fuels.
Prior to describing and modeling the chemical processes of combustion in wildland fuels using computational fluid dynamics, we are investigating a technique to non-intrusively measure flame gas velocities using thermal imagery. By tracing "hot" pixels through successive …

Effect Of The Brightener On The Behavior Of The Silver Electrodeposition, Jin Hu, Hui-Min Wu, Xiang-Ming Feng, Wei-Dong Li, Zheng-Zhong Zuo, Yun-Hong Zhou
Journal of Electrochemistry
The effect of the brightener on the behavior of the silver electrodeposition in cyanide solution was studied by potentiostatically step and rotating dise electrode (RDE) as well as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). It was found that the silver electrodeposition was not changed by the addition of the brightener to the fundarmental solution. But it apparently increased the solution's micro-leveling effection and remarkably improved the coating's surface lightness. The coating's orientation isn't changed by the addition of the brightener in the light of the XRD result. The effectivness of the brightener was also discussed by the half-wideth …

Raman Spectroscopic Study On Mechanism Of Aluminum Triphosphate Pigment, Zhi-Jun Gu, Yong-Gui Liao, Zhi-Gang Zhang, Qi-Long Guo, Fang-Teng Su
Journal of Electrochemistry
The painted steel sample whose coating contained anticorrosive pigment has been investigated by Raman spectroscopy. The protective mechanism of aluminum triphosphate pigment for A3 steel is proposed as follows: Aluminum triphosphate can be dissolved and arrive at the surface of the steel. The dissolved triphosphate ions can complex with ferric ions. And the new products, namely ferric triphosphate, can strongly adhere at the surface of the steel by chemical bonds slowly. At last, a compact protective film, which effectively separates the steel substrate from the aggressive media, is formed at the steel surface.

Further Evidence For Surface Properties Of Porous Silicon Resulting In Electroluminescence, Zhan-Jun Zhang, Bin Wu, Jing-Jian Li, Zhong-Fan Liu, Sheng-Min Cai
Journal of Electrochemistry
The electroluminescence of porous silicon in solutions at positive biases was investigated by luminescence spectrometer. The electroluminescence of porous silicon in solutions mainly depended on its surface properties. The elelctroluminescence was much enhanced when the sample of porous silicon was electrolyzed once again which had undergone an electroluminescence test. The tests of both cyclic voltammetry and the luminescence of the sample of porous silicon prepared by repeated electrolysis provided further evidence that the electroluminescence of porous silicon in solutions at positive biases stemmed from the oxidation of Si-H on the surface of porous silicon. The voltage tunable emitting for porous …

An Investigation Of Inhibition Mechanism Of Cerium For Aluminum Alloy 2024-T3, Min-Hua Shao, Yan Fu, Rong-Gang Hu, Chang-Jian Lin
Journal of Electrochemistry
Cerium compounds are promising inhibitors for aluminum alloy. However, the inhibition mechanism is not very clear. Scanning microreference electrode (SMRE) technique was used to probe the potential imaging of Al 2024 T3 in NaCl and CeCl3 solution. The results of SMRE showed that in NaCl solution a severe localized corrosion occurred on the surface of Al 2024 specimen at once and maintained for a long time. The corrosion activity of Al alloy in CeCl3 decreased with immersion time and disappeared finally. Additionally, the competition of inhibition and aggression between Ce3+ and Cl- on Al alloy was …

Uncertainty In Determination Of Hydrogen Diffusion Coefficient In Metal Hydride Electrode Based On The Transition Region Of Diffusion-Controlled Impedance, Xian-Xia Yuan, Nai-Xin Xu
Journal of Electrochemistry
Hydrogen diffusion coefficient in MlNi3.75Co0.65 Mn0.4Al0.2 metal hydride electrode has been determined with transition region of diffusion-controlled impedance. Multiple solutions were obtained at each data point because of the periodic characteristic of some functions used in the calculation, and the maximum difference between the solutions reached several orders of magnitude. On the other hand, the solutions varied for different data points in the transition region of diffusion-controlled impedance of the same experimental plot. It could be concluded that this method is not so well defined and some modification is required.

In the study of pulmonary vascular remodeling, much can be learned from observing the morphological changes undergone in the pulmonary arteries of the rat lung when exposed to chronic hypoxia or other challenges which elicit a remodeling response. Remodeling effects include thickening of vessel walls, and loss of wall compliance. Morphometric data can be used to localize the hemodynamic and functional consequences. We developed a CT imaging method for measuring the pulmonary arterial tree over a range of pressures in rat lungs. X-ray micro-focal isotropic volumetric imaging of the arterial tree in the intact rat lung provides detailed information on …

Information Efficiency In Hyperspectral Imaging Systems, Stephen E. Reichenbach, Luyin Cao, Ram M. Narayanan
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
In this work we develop a method for assessing the information density and efficiency of hyperspectral imaging systems that have spectral bands of non-uniform width. Imaging system designs with spectral bands of nonuniform width can efficiently gather information about a scene by allocating bandwidth among the bands according to their information content. The information efficiency is the ratio of information density to data density and is a function of the scene’s spectral radiance, hyperspectral system design, and signal-to-noise ratio. The assessment can be used to produce an efficient system design. For example, one approach to determining the number and width …

On The Use Of Linda As A Framework For Distributed Database Systems, Madhan M. Thirukonda, Ronaldo Menezes
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
Linda is a coordination language capable of solving issues in distributed computing environments that relate to process synchronization, communication and creation. The expressiveness of Linda in distributed systems is such that researchers are proposing novel applications using Linda as a primary means of coordination. The examples range from peer-to-peer to groupware computing, from simple chat applications to control systems. Surprisingly, Linda has not been used in the field of distributed databases, although Linda can be helpful in solving coordination issues in a distributed database system. In this paper, we look at a possibility of using Linda in the context of …

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)
Multipacting is one of the major loss mechanisms in RF superconductivity cavities for accelerators. This loss mechanism limits the maximum amount of energy/power supported by the cavities. Optimal designs have been identified in others’ studies. In practice, these designs are not easily manufactured. Chemical etching processes used to polish the cavity walls result in a nonuniform surface etch. A nonuniform surface etch will leave some unclean areas with contaminants and micron size particles. These significantly affect multipacting. Further, a nonuniform etch will leave areas with damaged grain structure, which is not good for superconducting properties. Typically, the depth of chemical …

Neutron scattering has been used to measure the charge and spin structure in the highly underdoped superconductor YBa2Cu3O6.35. Incommensurate static charge ordering is found that remains at high temperatures. The magnetic pattern is complex with a resonance and incommensurate structure observed at low temperatures. The results clarify the role of striped phases in YBa2Cu3O6+x superconductors.

Modeling Corrosion In Oxygen Controlled Lbe Systems With Coupling Of Chemical Kinetics And Hydrodynamics: Quarterly Progress Report 11/16/01- 2/15/02, Samir Moujaes, Yitung Chen
Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)
The Lead-Bismuth eutectic (LBE) has been determined from previous experimental studies by the Russians and the European scientific community to be a potential material that can be used as a spallation target and coolant for the AAA proposed application.
Properly controlling the oxygen content in LBE can drastically reduce the LBE corrosion to structural steels. However, existing knowledge of material corrosion performance was obtained from point-wise testing with very limited density. The transport of oxygen and corrosion products, their interaction and variation of corrosion/precipitation along the flow are not well understood.
The first subtask of this project involves using a …

Design And Analysis For Melt Casting Metallic Fuel Pins Incorporating Volatile Actinides: Quarterly Progress Report 11/16/01- 2/15/02, Yitung Chen, Randy Clarksean, Darrell Pepper
Fuels Campaign (TRP)
An important aspect of the Advanced Accelerator Applications (AAA) program is the development of a casting process by which volatile actinide element (i.e., americium) can be incorporated into metallic alloy fuel pins. The traditional metal fuel casting process uses an inductively heated crucible.
This process works well for the fabrication of metal fuel pins traditionally composed of alloys of uranium and plutonium, but does not work well when highly volatile actinides are included in the melt. The problem occurs both during the extended time period required to superheat the alloy melt as well as when the chamber must be evacuated. …
