Nanostructures With Small- And Large-Scale Periodic And Random Rough Surfaces And Lateral Fluctuations In The Permittivity And Permeability-Scattered Near Fields, Ezekiel Bahar
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
The scattered electromagnetic near fields due to fluctuations in the surface height and/or lateral variations in the electromagnetic medium parameters are evaluated using a full-wave approach. Since the scales of the height and medium fluctuations considered could be significantly smaller or larger than the electromagnetic wavelengths, the familiar perturbation and physical/geometrical optics solutions cannot be used nor is it possible to investigate subwave length features based on far-field measurements. The full-wave approach employs complete field expansion that includes propagating and evanescent waves as well as lateral waves and surface waves, which are not accounted for in the perturbation and physical …

Two Mechanisms Of Blueshift Of Edge Emission In Ingan-Based Epilayers And Multiple Quantum Wells, E. Kuokstis, J. W. Yang, Grigory Simin, M. Asif Khan, R. Gaska, M. S. Shur
Faculty Publications
We present the results of a comparative photoluminescence(PL) study of GaN and InGaN-based epilayers, and InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells(MQWs). Room-temperature PL spectra were measured for a very broad range of optical excitation from 10 mW/cm2 up to 1 MW/cm2. In contrast to GaN epilayers, all In-containing samples exhibited an excitation-induced blueshift of the peak emission. In addition, the blueshift of the emission in the InGaN epilayers with the same composition as the quantum well was significantly smaller. The comparison of the blueshift in the “bulk” InGaN and in the MQWs allowed us to separate two different mechanisms …

Hydrogen-Induced Embrittlement Of Candidate Target Materials For Applications In Spallation-Neutron-Target Systems, Ajit K. Roy, Brendan O'Toole
Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)
The purpose of this project is to evaluate the effect of hydrogen on cracking of candidate target materials for applications in spallation-neutron-target (SNT) systems such as accelerator production of tritium (APT) and accelerator transmutation of waste (ATW). The test materials will undergo appropriate thermal treatments prior to being hydrogen-charged by potentiostatic cathodic polarization technique in a simulated aqueous environment at different temperatures of interest. The specimens, upon completion of testing, will be metallographically examined. Further, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) will be used to determine the extent and nature of cracking in the specimens tested. The thrust of the proposed …

Effect Of Catalyst Structure On Oxidative Dehydrogenation Of Ethane And Propane On Alumina-Supported Vanadia, Morris D. Argyle, Kaidong Chen, Alexis T. Bell, Enrique Iglesia
Faculty Publications
The catalytic properties of Al2O3-supported vanadia with a wide range of VOx surface density (1.4-34.2 V/nm2) and structure were examined for the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane and propane. UV-visible and Raman spectra showed that vanadia is dispersed predominately as isolated monovanadate species below ~2.3 V/nm2. As surface densities increase, two-dimensional polyvanadates appear (2.3-7.0 V/nm2) along with increasing amounts of V2O5 crystallites at surface densities above 7.0 V/nm2. The rate constant for oxidative dehydrogenation (k1) and its ratio with alkane and alkene combustion (k2/k1 and k3/k1, respectively) were compared for both alkane reactants as a function of vanadia surface density. Propene …

Empirical data on streamer formation and propagation in near-atmospheric pressure N2 and N2/O2mixtures are presented. The data were obtained primarily from high-speed, high-sensitivity shutter and streak photography of streamers produced in a ≈13 cm gap. The streamer propagation velocity as a function of applied voltage, polarity, total pressure, and O2 concentration are provided. In addition, information on streamer bifurcation, and streamer shape and size is included.
The breakdown process has two phases: a fast phase featuring the propagation of streamers, and much slower phase involving the heating of the gas to form the spark …

Studies On Use Of Carbon Slurry, A Waste From Fertilizer Plant, In Treatment Of Waste Water, Sanjay Tewari
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
"Non biodegradable materials like heavy metals, refractory organics are not removed during the conventional treatment process. In order to meet the regulatory standards and for safe disposal, it is necessary to go for tertiary treatment. Various tertiary treatment methods include adsorption, membrane separation process, ultra filtration, reverse osmosis etc. Adsorption has been found to be efficient for the removal of most of heavy metals in waste water at lower concentrations. Activated carbon is commonly used adsorbents, however, due to its high cost and loss in regeneration, various low cost adsorbents have been investigated during recent years.
The aim of the …

Fdtd Modeling Incorporating A Two-Port Network For I/O Line Emi Filtering Design, Xiaoning Ye, James L. Drewniak
Fdtd Modeling Incorporating A Two-Port Network For I/O Line Emi Filtering Design, Xiaoning Ye, James L. Drewniak
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Electromagnetic interference (EMI) filters are often utilized on I/O lines to reduce high-frequency noise form being conducted off the printed circuit board (PCB) and causing EMI problems. The filtering performance is often compromised at high frequencies due to parasitics associated with the filter itself, or the PCB layout and interconnects. Finite difference time domain (FDTD) modeling can be used to quantify the effect of PCB layout and interconnects, as well as filter type, on the EMI performance of I/O line filtering. FDTD modeling of a T-type and π-type filter consisting of surface-mount ferrites and capacitors is considered herein. The FDTD …

High-Performance Inter-Pcb Connectors: Analysis Of Emi Characteristics, Xiaoning Ye, James L. Drewniak, Jim Nadolny, David M. Hockanson
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Electromagnetic interference (EMI) coupling associated with inter-board connection is investigated. Two experimental techniques, based on |S21| measurements, including both common-mode current and near-field measurements, are reported. Both methods, as well as finite difference time domain (FDTD) modeling, were used as experimental and numerical tools for inter-printed-circuit-board (inter-PCB) connector evaluation. The EMI performance of a lab-constructed stacked-card connector, and a commercially available module-on-backplane connector were studied. EMI characteristics of the connectors are demonstrated by investigating a few aspects of the design: type of shield/ground blade for signal return, number and length of ground pins, signal pin designation, etc. Good …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The results of studies of the preparation, structure, and optical properties of undoped and Gd-doped CeO2 thin films are presented. Dense films with 4-150 nm grain size have been obtained on monocrystalline sapphire substrates using a polymeric precursor spin coating method. The results of the optical measurements are presented and correlated with the microstructure of the films. The transmission spectra have been used to determine the energy dependence of the refractive index, n and the extinction coefficient, k. Both n and k of the thin films decreased as grain size decreased and these results showed that this change could …

2001 Traffic Safety Issues Opinion Survey, Kenneth R. Agent, Jerry G. Pigman, Ronald E. Langley
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
As a means of determining public opinion on specific traffic safety issues, a public opinion survey was conducted. A total of 4,500 mail surveys were sent to a stratified sample of drivers selected from the drivers license file. The state was divided into three regions (based on Area Development District) to determine if opinions varied by region of the state. There were 2,097 responses received for a response rate of about 51.5 percent for eligible surveys. The margin-of-error for a sample of this size is plus or minus 2.1 percent at the 95 percent confidence level.
The most support was …

Response Time Is More Important Than Walking Speed For The Ability Of Older Adults To Avoid A Fall After A Trip, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert, M. J. Pavol, M. D. Grabiner
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
We previously reported that the probability of an older adult recovering from a forward trip and using a “lowering” strategy increases with decreased walking velocity and faster response time. To determine the within-subject interaction of these variables we asked three questions: (1) Is the body orientation at the time that the recovery foot is lowered to the ground (“tilt angle”) critical for successful recovery? (2) Can a simple inverted pendulum model, using subject-specific walking velocity and response time as input variables, predict this body orientation, and thus success of recovery? (3) Is slower walking velocity or faster response time more …
