"Zinc is present as oxide and sulphate. There are also probably zinc and lead sulphites. It has been suggested that there may be carbonates in this pigment, but this is not probable as the high temperature of the furnace, the complete combustion of the fuel to CO2 and the large excess of SO2 gas in the bagroom would tend to prevent their formation. There is also a chemical combination between the zinc oxide and the lead oxide which is probably a zinc plumbate. Some light can be thrown on the subject by the following experiments:"--page 1.

Most of these formulae are logarithmic and their use involves a considerable amount of work. The object of this thesis is to present these formulae in such form that problems involving their use may be readily and easily solved. "In the Joplin region are enormous piles of tailings, that for waste material, run very high in blende. This is due mainly to the temporary character of the mills which are built with more regard to low first cost than to receiving a high percentage of extraction. As a result we have some piles of tailings containing from 200,000 to 300,000 tons of materials that will average from about 2 to 3% zinc, and all crushed so as to pass through about #2 mesh"--Page 1.
