Viscosity Determination During Polymerization, Elmer David Jones May 1954

Viscosity Determination During Polymerization, Elmer David Jones

Theses

This project was undertaken for the purpose of designing, constructing, and operating a viscometer which could be employed for measuring viscosities in the range of 200 to 700 poises at temperatures up to 300°C. Such an instrument was built and used to study the viscosity of Type EV polymer during polymerization.

The new viscometer is based cm the principle of concentric rotating cylinders. It is unique in that it can be suspended directly in a polymer batch and will operate under temperature and viscosity conditions as outlined above. Polymerization curves for batches studied show that the instrument gives viscosity values …

Investigation Of The Acid Degradation Of 2-(4-Methoxybenzylamino)-Pyridine, Anthony Thomas Oropollo May 1954

Investigation Of The Acid Degradation Of 2-(4-Methoxybenzylamino)-Pyridine, Anthony Thomas Oropollo

Theses

This paper represents work done in connection with an investigation of the products resulting from the reaction of dilute sulfuric acid and 2-(4-methoxybenzyl-amino)-pyridine. Brief contact between these reactants at temperatures below 80°C give rise to a water soluble salt of the amine. The amine may be precipitated from the solution by the addition of sufficient alkali.

Under the conditions considered in this paper, prolonged contact of reactants at temperatures above 80°C, a non-crystalline condensation product is obtained in addition to the amine salt.

Attempts to identify this product were unsuccessful. However, in connection with the characterization work, two relatively little …

Geology Of An Area Near Montana City, Montana, Frank A. Crowley May 1954

Geology Of An Area Near Montana City, Montana, Frank A. Crowley

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The investigated area lies about five miles south of Helena, Montana, near the abandoned gold camp of Montana City. Topographically, the area reflects the sedimentary formations and the igneous rocks, quartz monzonite and rhyolite. Static recrystallization of the sedimentary rocks caused by the intrusion of the Boulder Batholith, along with deformation of sedimentary beds by pre-batholithic folding and by post-batholithic faulting have complicated the geologic picture.

The Placer Deposits Of The Siberia District (German Gulch), Montana, Ronald D. Karvinen May 1954

The Placer Deposits Of The Siberia District (German Gulch), Montana, Ronald D. Karvinen

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The original concept of this problem was to determine if hidden or buried placers existed past the terminal point of the extensive placering in the Siberia District. Several theories have been advanced for the sudden cessation of those placers. All are plausible, and are both for and against an extended placer. The past history relates that some $13,000,000 in gold has been produced in the area, therefore stressing a practical search for additional accumulation.

Leaching As A Method Of Mining Uranium, Rob L. Kane May 1954

Leaching As A Method Of Mining Uranium, Rob L. Kane

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

This paper presents a new method of recovering uranium ores from the earth. By sinking drill holes into ore bearing beds, aqueous leach solutions can be circulated through the ores. Solutions of sulfuric acid, potassium carbonate and many other available reagents will put the ions of uranium and vanadium into the liquid leach. The pregnant solutions are then pumped to the surface so a recovery of the valuable portion of the ore can be made.

Effectiveness Of Evaporation From Ground And Foliage In Reducing Soil Moisture Depletion, Val D. Wynn May 1954

Effectiveness Of Evaporation From Ground And Foliage In Reducing Soil Moisture Depletion, Val D. Wynn

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Field irrigation efficiency is the percentage of the water delivered to the field that becomes available to the crop as soil moisture. The so-called "evaporation losses" from wetted ground and foliage are rather difficult to measure, but are estimated by Christiansen (3) to be between 15 and 30 percent. No doubt part of this may be termed as a "loss," but the other part may be incorrectly termed as such. Many authorities claim that water must pass through the plant before being transpired into the atmosphere to be effectively used.

A Study Of The Bonding By Air-Setting Refractory Mortar At Elevated Temperatures, Bhikhubhai Mahadeo Sedalia

Doctoral Dissertations

"The importance of a suitable material for the laying of bricks in furnace and kiln construction has been recognized by the refractory industry for a long time. It is necessary that a strong bond should develop between the bricks to impart strength to the entire construction work. A weak joint would form the weakest link and dangerously weaken the whole structure.

Such being the importance of the bond, the refractory industry has made quite an effort to develop jointing materials which would produce strong bonds. During the last two decades, due to intensive research and development work, many good bonding …

The most important application is in blast furnace refractories. Similar failures due to carbon deposition, involving other gases such as methane, have been noted and less extensively studied. Failures due to the action of gases other than carbon monoxide are beyond the scope of this thesis. Occasional attempts to find some agent to prevent disintegration have been mentioned in the literature. In this study the number of such substances and the results of their action …

A Fundamental Study Of Clay Drying Using Ware Of Large Cross Section, Robert F. Grady Iii Jan 1954

A Fundamental Study Of Clay Drying Using Ware Of Large Cross Section, Robert F. Grady Iii

Masters Theses

"The drying of clay has been studied extensively in the past by many investigators, some of whom attempted to relate this information to the structure of clay and thereby develop a more vivid picture, while others studied the mechanism of drying in its own right in order to present a useable theory that would allow improvements in the drying operation.

At present the literature is unable to present a theory of the mechanism of drying that is sufficiently general to cover the observed aspects of clay drying. Many and varied mechanisms are presented, but correlation is seldom completely evident between …

Horizontal Pressures On Retaining Walls Due To Line Surface Loads, John B. Heagler Jan 1954

Horizontal Pressures On Retaining Walls Due To Line Surface Loads, John B. Heagler

Masters Theses

"Among the oldest types of structures with which engineers have had to deal are those which serve to laterally restrain masses of earth, or to prevent earth embankments from assuming their natural angle of repose. This is necessary where space is limited or the natural slope would encroach upon other property. These structures, usually called retaining walls, are subjected to forces, both lateral and vertical due to the pressures exerted by the backfill material and any loads imposed on the backfill material. The first step in the design of the retaining wall is to determine the magnitude, position, and line …
