An Investigation Of The Effectiveness Of Certain Organic Compounds In The Flotation Of Manganese Oxide Minerals, Johannes P. Dreyer May 1959

An Investigation Of The Effectiveness Of Certain Organic Compounds In The Flotation Of Manganese Oxide Minerals, Johannes P. Dreyer

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

This thesis has to do with the selective flotation of the manganese oxide minerals in an ore from Charco Redondo Mine, Oriente Province, Cuba. Since a sound knowledge of the nature of the emulsion-induced flotation process of these minerals does not exist, experimental research constitutes the most valuable resource for determining the extent to which different reagents influence the process. Moreover, a correlation of experimental results with the chemical and physical properties of the minerals and reagents can lead to the improvement of existing theories regarding the mechanism of a process.

Separation And Concentration Of Stibiconite, William Howard Painter May 1959

Separation And Concentration Of Stibiconite, William Howard Painter

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Primarily, the purpose of this study is to separate stibiconite from associated gangue minerals. The ore containing antimony, as an oxide stibiconite, occurs in Mexico and its benefication would be an advantage to the mineral resources of that country. While the deposit from which this ore is derived is American owned, the resource is presently non-economic. A concentrate must be derived of suitable grade for its use in a smelting operation and from which metallic antimony would be produced.

Streaming Potential Studies On Rutile, Albert R. Rule May 1959

Results presented in this thesis are for rutile in solutions of conductivity water and in potassium chloride solutions. The data obtained in this investigation are presented graphically in the body of the thesis and are tabulated in the appendix for convenience.

Electrical Methods Of Mineral Concentration, Gordon F. Ziesing May 1959

Electrical Methods Of Mineral Concentration, Gordon F. Ziesing

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The evaluation of a mineral-dressing method cannot be carried out successfully without an initial understanding of the basic fundamentals and concepts governing the operation of the method. Experimentation, governed by the understanding of the basic concepts, together with intelligent conclusions based on the experimental data, complete the evaluation of the dressing method.

Electrical concentration, being the given dressing method, will be evaluated as discussed above. As they are thoroughly covered by Mora (13), the fundamental concepts will not be given a lengthy discussion.

Shear Strength Of Simply Supported Prestressed Concrete Beams Having Web Enforcement, Randolph E. Holt May 1959

Shear Strength Of Simply Supported Prestressed Concrete Beams Having Web Enforcement, Randolph E. Holt

Civil Engineering ETDs

The problem of shear strength in pre-stressed concrete beams is analogous to that in ordinary reinforced concrete, since there is very little difference between reinforced concrete and pre-stressed concrete beams in the cracked condition. Until very recently, the knowledge of the shear strength of reinforced concrete members and pre-stressed concrete members was wholly statistical. Developments in the last few years have advanced it to the semi-empirical level, 5,6,7 but our knowledge of the effect that shear has on the ultimate strength of reinforced and pre-stressed concrete members is still far from complete.

Electric Arc Furnace Production Of Standard-Grade Ferromanganese, Curtis Bates May 1959

Electric Arc Furnace Production Of Standard-Grade Ferromanganese, Curtis Bates

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The purpose of this investigation is to determine an operating procedure for electric arc furnace production of standard ferromanganese. An attempt was made to determine a charge which would give steady power consumption in the furnace and at the same time keep the manganese content in the slag to a minimum.

Stress-Induced Martensite Transformation In An Alloy Of The Copper-Aluminum-Nickel System, Gary D. Alexander May 1959

Stress-Induced Martensite Transformation In An Alloy Of The Copper-Aluminum-Nickel System, Gary D. Alexander

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

It was intended that the alloy be thoroughly investigated for martensite transformation that would make the alloy "super-elastic," but due to the many difficulties that arose this was not possible. Attempts to grow a single crystal from the cast alloy were not successful because of the difficulties that were encountered with the Kanthal resistance furnace (referred to later). Consequently, the growing of the single crystal was abandoned and the alloy was tested in the poly-crystalline form.

Growth And Examination Of Calcium Single Crystals, Richard W. Roberts May 1959

Growth And Examination Of Calcium Single Crystals, Richard W. Roberts

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

This report is in two sections. The first section relates to a vacuum technique for growing single crystals of calcium. The second section discusses the results of an X-ray examination of crystals of zinc by the back reflection Laue method.

The Identification Of Montana Clays By X-Ray Analysis, George Mason Maxwell May 1959

The Identification Of Montana Clays By X-Ray Analysis, George Mason Maxwell

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

This thesis is to be written with the assumption that the reader is familiar with the more elementary facts of X-ray crystal analysis, such as the production and properties of X-rays, and the Bragg reflection law.

The purpose of this paper is to report on the investigations carried on to find some relatively simple means of identifying Montana Clays.

The Identification Of Montana Clays By X-Ray Analysis, David Stephen Malyevac May 1959

Streamflow Forecasting For Blacksmith Fork River, Utah, Yu-Si Fok May 1959

Streamflow Forecasting For Blacksmith Fork River, Utah, Yu-Si Fok

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The method for streamflow forecasting by using Fourier Series and Multiple Regression as a mathematical model have been suggested and proved with high accuracy for the streamflow forecasting on Logan River, Utah by Professor Cleve H. Milligan and Dr. Rex L. Hurst. 1/

In this thesis the method is extended to the forecasting for the Blacksmith Fork River, south of the Logan River.

Because the climatological data are not available in the Blacksmith Fork watershed, this thesis also provides a technique for using the available data from adjacent watersheds.

The Effect Of Capillary Bleeding On The Compressive Strength Of Concrete, James L. Cramer Apr 1959

The Effect Of Capillary Bleeding On The Compressive Strength Of Concrete, James L. Cramer

Civil Engineering ETDs

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect that bleeding has upon the compressive strength of concrete. Keeping in mind that the compressive strength of a concrete depends highly upon the water, cement ratio, it was reasonable to expect that the changing of the water content of the fresh concrete by bleeding would have a definite effect on the final compressive strength. While tests upon tests and studies upon studies have been made of cement and concrete, few, if any, have been concerned with this problem.

Effect Of Strain Rate And Temperature On The Stress-Strain Characteristics Of Plastics, Walter W. Joseph Apr 1959

Effect Of Strain Rate And Temperature On The Stress-Strain Characteristics Of Plastics, Walter W. Joseph

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

The stress-strain characteristics of a material are a measure of the energy absorption characteristics of that material. Generally, plastics show permanent deformation at low values of strain but will withstand a large amount of strain before reaching their ultimate strength. Therefore, in effect, plastics are good energy absorbing materials. If the packaging designer could predict the effect of variation in strain rate and temperature on the stress-strain characteristics of a given plastic, his designs would be more reliable.

Transistor Distributed Amplifier, Bill J. Harper Apr 1959

Transistor Distributed Amplifier, Bill J. Harper

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

For the purpose of this report, it is assumed that the behavior of the transistor can be predicted from the study of a suitable circuit model or equivalent circuit of the transistor. It is further assumed that, except for the intrinsic short-circuit current gain, the circuit parameters of he transistor are independent of frequency and temperature. The primary interest in the study of transistor distributed amplifier here is the amplitude of the voltage gain in the amplification of video frequencies. Somewhat less detailed studies are made of the distributed amplifier in band-pass applications.

An Experimental Investigation Of A Small Volume Sandwich Antenna In The 400 Megacycle Frequency Range, James Gilbert Smith Jan 1959

An Experimental Investigation Of A Small Volume Sandwich Antenna In The 400 Megacycle Frequency Range, James Gilbert Smith

Masters Theses

"Scope of the Investigation: The small volume sandwich antenna was patterned after that of F. D. Clapp's which appears in an unpublished report written for the United States Navy. Clapp's antenna is shown in Figure 2. The antenna described in this report was investigated at approximately one-thousandth of the volume of the original Clapp antenna. Clapp's antenna was designed for the 225-400 megacycle range; while the author's model was designed for operation at 400 megacycles.

The objective of this investigation was to build a small volume sandwich antenna which could be adapted to satisfy the characteristics listed on page 1. …

An Amplitude-Stable, Fixed-Frequency Transistorized Power Supply, Bobby O. Allen Jan 1959

An Amplitude-Stable, Fixed-Frequency Transistorized Power Supply, Bobby O. Allen

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The subject of this paper is the design of an ultrastable, fixed- frequency power supply capable of maintaining a high degree of amplitude stability over a wide range of resistive load values. The requirement for such a power supply originally arose in connection with the design of a particular piece of test equipment required by Sandia Corporation. No attempt will be made in this paper to justify or explain the necessity for the specified design criteria outlined in the following paragraphs other than to adequately define the design criteria.

Graphical Solution Of Concentration At Production Wells Of Injected Radioactive Water Tracers, George E. Vaughn Jr. Jan 1959

Graphical Solution Of Concentration At Production Wells Of Injected Radioactive Water Tracers, George E. Vaughn Jr.

Masters Theses

"With the advent of field research in which radioactive isotopes are used as tracers for water injected in secondary-recovery operations, knowledge of the probable transit time between wells of an injected tracer, its concentration at detection points, and the resultant optimum injection concentration has become important. Both detection and, consequently, injection concentrations of radioactive tracers are at least in part functions of the loss of tracer for various reasons, flow characteristics between wells, the rate of decay of radioactive emission, and the sensitivity of the detection apparatus. A method, based on the characteristics of a homogeneous 5-spot system, has been …

Bonded Joint Strength Versus Loading Rate, Charless William Fowlkes Jan 1959

Bonded Joint Strength Versus Loading Rate, Charless William Fowlkes

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to determine the influence of the rate of loading variable on the apparent shear strengths of joints bonded with some of the currently available metal-to-metal adhesives. The effects of this variable are sometimes neglected by testing laboratories. The results of an experimental evaluation of the mechanical behavior of a group on modern metal-to-metal adhesives as a function of the rate of load application are used to more accurately establish the importance of rate of load considerations in adhesive joint testing. An attempt is made to explain observations of other investigators engaged in adhesive joint …

Design Of Vierendeel Trusses, Richard Denis Pearson Jan 1959

Design Of Vierendeel Trusses, Richard Denis Pearson

Masters Theses

"The Vierendeel Truss, or Rigid Frame Truss, was first introduced by Professor Arthur Vierendeel in Belgium at the beginning of the century. The Vierendeel Truss differs from the more common triangulated truss in that it contains no diagonal members. The members of the truss are joined rigidly together and each member is required to transmit bending, shear and direct stress.

Professor Vierendeel claimed that Vierendeel Trusses are 20 to 30 percent cheaper than the conventional type of truss. This statement has been challenged by many who believe that this type of truss is fundamentally inferior to the more conventional type. …

Evaluation Of The Force Constants Of Non-Polar Gases From Viscosity Data, Charles Warren Keller Jan 1959

Evaluation Of The Force Constants Of Non-Polar Gases From Viscosity Data, Charles Warren Keller

Masters Theses

"Studies of the intermolecular forces and potential energy functions have been largely of a theoretical nature. Various empirical statements representing these theories have been developed and tested. Of these, the Lennard-Jones (6-12) potential is one of the more realistic and has become the most favored when dealing with non-polar molecules.

The values of these “force constants” or the values of the Lennard-Jones (6-12) potential parameters, have been determined from both diffusion and viscosity data. Although these “force constants” can be determined from diffusional measurements as well as viscosity data, the literature is predominately filled with values of force constants which …

Chemical Kinetics Of The Zirconium-Hydrofluoride Reaction, Wayne G. Custead Jan 1959

Chemical Kinetics Of The Zirconium-Hydrofluoride Reaction, Wayne G. Custead

Masters Theses

"It has been only in recent years that hafnium-free zirconium has been made available for commercial use. When economical methods were developed in 1950 to remove hafnium from zirconium, a metal was produced which not only exhibited good corrosion resistance and desirable physical properties, but which also had a very low absorption cross section for thermal neutrons. These factors have led to its most important application to date, that of a structural material for nuclear reactors.

The outstanding non-nuclear property of zirconium is its corrosion resistance to most mineral acids. Hafnium-free zirconium exhibits outstanding resistance to all mineral acids with …

The Effects Of Ultrasonically-Induced Cavitation Upon Dissolved Oxygen, Free Carbon Dioxide, And Bicarbonate Ion Concentration In Water, Charles Alvin Wentz Jr. Jan 1959

The Effects Of Ultrasonically-Induced Cavitation Upon Dissolved Oxygen, Free Carbon Dioxide, And Bicarbonate Ion Concentration In Water, Charles Alvin Wentz Jr.

Masters Theses

"Cavitation may be encountered in many scientific fields. Mechanical and civil engineers are concerned with the prevention of cavitation erosion in the design of turbines, propellers, underwater missiles, and similar structures. Biologists and physiologists are seeking more knowledge concerning the tensile strength of liquids, such as, tree sap and the formation of gas bubbles in the blood stream. Finally, the physicist and acoustical engineer must cope with the cavitation problem when working with underwater transducers, cavitation noise, and the propagation of acoustical signals through media in which cavitation is occurring.

There are many forces which hold a liquid together and …

The Effect Of Rare Earth Additions On Low Alloy Steel, Sukh Dev Sehgal Jan 1959

The Effect Of Rare Earth Additions On Low Alloy Steel, Sukh Dev Sehgal

Masters Theses

"Rare earth metals have for some years been used as an inoculant in nonferrous foundry practice and lately in the production of nodular iron. It has been reported that addition of rare earth metal to certain grades of stainless steel so improve the hot malleability that reduction of large size ingots in the blooming mill is now possible. It has been reported that considerable improvement in soundness and mechanical properties of steel castings and wrought products have been attained as a result of small additions of rare earth metals and oxides. In practically all investigations, it has been reported that …

Mechanization Of First Stage Graphitization In Fe- C-Si- Alloys, Dildar S. Gill Jan 1959

Mechanization Of First Stage Graphitization In Fe- C-Si- Alloys, Dildar S. Gill

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to study the mechanism of first stage graphitization in iron-carbon-silicon alloys in the light of results obtained by Taub, and to propose a new mechanism of graphitization. The results of preliminary experiments confirmed the findings of Taub as regards the precipitation of secondary carbides. Therefore, it was decided to extend the investigation so as to include the study of growth of secondary carbides. In order to know the chief factor responsible for the growth of secondary carbides, the activation energy was calculated. Another factor which was investigated was the site of graphite nuclei formation”--Purpose …

"Emulsions have been in existence for thousands of years in the form of cosmetics, food, and medicines. Emulsions cover a vast number of products in both household and industrial use. Homogenized milk, butter, mayonnasise, salad dressing, and sauces are emulsions that are used every day at the dinner table. Medical salves, ointments, cosmetic creams and many other pharmaceuticals are used every day by members of both sexes in the human race. Waxes and polishes for automobiles, metal, floors, leathers, and furniture are emulsions. All of the new so called "wonder paints" and "rubber-base paints" are nothing more than an emulsion …

X-Ray Diffraction Study Of The Metal Powder Compacts, Rajendra Sharan Jan 1959

X-Ray Diffraction Study Of The Metal Powder Compacts, Rajendra Sharan

Masters Theses

"Various theories have been put forward about the mechanism of compacting and sintering processes. None of these theories are confirmed. The reason is that most of these theories are based on observations on metallographic specimens, which is not a particularly good tool for such a study. Little data using xray diffraction analysis is available and there seems to be a great need of making a thorough investigation in this direction.

The main object of this investigation is to study xray diffraction patterns of green compacts of aluminum, nickel and copper powders pressed under different compacting pressures to see if any …
