The Corrosion Of Zinc-Stainless Steel Couples In Flowing Sea Water, Henry Shaw
The Corrosion Of Zinc-Stainless Steel Couples In Flowing Sea Water, Henry Shaw
Theses
The effect of sea water flow on passivated stainless steel 304 coupled to high purity zinc was studied for more than 1000 hours at 23°C. The corrosion of both members of the couple increased over that of the metals alone. Zinc suffered severe pitting while the Stainless Steel was not visibly corroded, When the metals were exposed alone, zinc corroded uniformly while the stainless steel was not affected at all. The use of zinc coupled to Stainless Steel is not recommended in systems exposed to sea water.
The Effect Of Liquid Surface Tension On Wire Mesh Entrainment Separators, Herbert Franklyn Schroeder
The Effect Of Liquid Surface Tension On Wire Mesh Entrainment Separators, Herbert Franklyn Schroeder
Theses
The effect of liquid surface tension on the capacity of a wire mesh entrainment separator was studied. An air-rater system was used and, the surface tension of the water was reduced through the use of surfactants.
Five test series were run, each with a different surface tension of water. The surface tensions examined covered the range of 30 dynes/cm to 70 dynes/cm. For each test run series, the effect of liquid loading was investigated. Liquid loading rates were varied between 55 and 550 lbs/hr/ft².
Entrainment separator capacity was found to vary linearly with liquid surface tension. As surface tension decreased, …
Packed Bed Heat Transfer, Anthony William Sposaro
Packed Bed Heat Transfer, Anthony William Sposaro
Theses
The use of various published correlations to determine apparent thermal conductivities was found to give results of differing ma; magnitudes. For this reason when these values were utilized in the theoretical relationships proposed by McAdams:
tw-t2/tw-t1 = 0.692e-23.14X + 0.1312e-121.9X + 0.0535e-299.6X
in which X is defined as
X = (KaL/CpGoD2t)
For packed bed systems the results were found to be inconsistent.
In this investigation a dimensionless equation:
Ka/kg = 0.00105 (DpGo/εpμ)1.32
has been developed which permits the prediction of apparent thermal conductivities to air flowing through a 1 inch tube picked with glass …

Although a great deal of experimental data are available on many of the factors involved in a concrete mix design, a limited amount of work has been done to determine the effect of the surface characteristics of the concrete aggregates. Some research has been done in this connection by the New Mexico Highway Department. Some of the results of this research are included in a later section of this thesis.
Linear Time Base Precision And The Compound Sweep Concept, William W. Steger
Linear Time Base Precision And The Compound Sweep Concept, William W. Steger
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
This paper is a monograph on general precision criteria for feedback linear time base circuits. The linearity and stability performance of these devices is evaluated in terms of deviation from an ideal ramp function.
In its entirety, the paper attempts to provide a complete reference for the most commonly encountered aspects of time base precision. Attention is centered on what could be called the "low frequency" case, which most often is valid in applications requiring a high precision time base.
The subject is developed in a number of progressive, cumulative stages. The end products at each stage of the analysis …
Radial Dislocations In Plane Stress., William J. Sieger
Radial Dislocations In Plane Stress., William J. Sieger
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
The elastic dislocation theory was used to obtain stress potentials for the dual dislocation problem. These solutions give the stress field for an infinite plane region containing a centrally located circular hole with two radial dislocations originating from opposite sides of the hole and extending into the region along a line perpendicular to the axis of applied load. Solutions were obtained for both the case of a linear dislocation relation along the cuts and for a parabolic relation.
Crystal Habit Modification Of Sodium Chlorate, Michael R. Keegan
Crystal Habit Modification Of Sodium Chlorate, Michael R. Keegan
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
All single crystals have a particular habit or morphology. The crystal habit refers to the relative degree of development of crystallographic planes into surfaces which make up the external appearance of the single crystal.
In this paper, NaClO3 is used as a parent crystal. Its simple cubic habit is modified to tetrahedral by the use of impurities of SO4=, S2O3=, Cr2O7=, and NO3-. The degree of habit change is studied as a function of impurity concentration and temperature. The problem and phenomena are explained in terms of surface chemistry and thermodynamics.
Physico-Chemical Principles Of Sixteenth Century Metallurgy, Robert E. Johnson
Physico-Chemical Principles Of Sixteenth Century Metallurgy, Robert E. Johnson
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
Following a review of sixteenth century metallurgical literature and a discussion of Gibbs free energy, this thesis discusses thermodynamic considerations of galena (PbS) reduction by iron from a lead assay of this period. The importance of fluxes in this assay is emphasized. The discussion covers both equilibrium and non-equilibrium conditions at 1100 degrees Celsius. Possible substitutes for iron are also covered.
Information from twenty-one small controlled lead assays is correlated with the thermodynamic discussion to determine the purpose of each constituent in the assay.
A Prototype Transmitter For A Microwave Refractometer, John C. Jordan
A Prototype Transmitter For A Microwave Refractometer, John C. Jordan
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
A study of the design, development and fabrication details of a transmitter for a microwave refractometer is presented. Atmospheric, radio frequency, refractive index is to be measured rapidly and directly up to altitudes of the order of 200,000 feet. Requirements for the transmitter with regard to its weight, volume and environment are indeed stringent since it is proposed to package the transmitter in a ogive configuration and elevate it to these altitudes utilizing a rocket propulsion system.

Stress-Corrosion Cracking Of Brass, Paul A. Fossey
Stress-Corrosion Cracking Of Brass, Paul A. Fossey
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
the mechanism of stress-corrosion cracking of brass has been sought for many years. Investigators have proposed many mechanisms, but each of these mechanisms has always had several drawbacks. This paper presents an account of experimental work done in the laboratory on this subject and compares it to the work of previous investigations. It evaluates the mechanisms presented by investigators and shows the failures of these mechanisms. A theory of Nitrogen Embrittlement is presented and an evaluation of this theory with experimental work follows.

An Investigation Of The Sintering Of Iron-Wire Compacts, George L. Vivian
An Investigation Of The Sintering Of Iron-Wire Compacts, George L. Vivian
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
A study of the sintering of iron has been made by observing the rate of bonding of iron wires wound on iron spools. The specimens were sintered at a constant temperature of 850c in vacuum furnaces capable of producing pressures of 10-5 to 10-4 mm of mercury, and the growth of the bond between wires was observed as a function of time.
It has been concluded that the volume-diffusion mechanism is strongly operating in the sintering of iron at 850c, but in an evacuated system, the evaporation-condensation mechanism also contributes to the sintering process.
A Study Of Sprinkler Uniformity Evaluation Methods, Baha Dabbous
A Study Of Sprinkler Uniformity Evaluation Methods, Baha Dabbous
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The use of water in homes, on farms, by factories, and for recreational purposes has been increasing rapidly. Water use has doubled in the last three decades. By 1980, water use is expected to be double the current use. In arid and semi-arid regions, the practice of successful profit-yielding agriculture often depends on irrigation. Irrigation is, in turn, dependent upon a water supply which is limited. The highest possible efficiency should be maintained if maximum utilization of the available water resources for irrigation is desired. Sprinkler irrigation allows, among other things, high water application efficiencies with good distribution uniformities.
The Aerodynamic Drag Of Spheres, Leon Rouzelle Scott
The Aerodynamic Drag Of Spheres, Leon Rouzelle Scott
Theses and Dissertations
A literature survey was conducted to determine the factors which affect aerodynamic drag of spheres. Graphs are presented which show the effect of each variable where such information was available. Equipment was designed and built for the purpose of studying the effects of acceleration on the aerodynamic drag of spheres. Special emphasis was placed on the measurement and control of each of the other variables which can affect the drag. Tests were conducted using large spheres in air and water to show that the method presented can produce a valid determination of the drag coefficients. The numerical values of the …
An Approach To Azimuth Angle Refraction Corrections, Wallis R. Cramond
An Approach To Azimuth Angle Refraction Corrections, Wallis R. Cramond
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
In the past, analyses of tropospheric reactions of electromagnetic waves propagating in the atmosphere have been based on spherically symmetric medium. However, this applies only to ray bending in a vertical plane (elevation angles). Numerous methods have been developed to correct for elevation angle errors. In 1961, the presentation of a new method for use in a nonsymmetric atmosphere revived interest in horizontal (azimuth angle) bending. In order to use this method to test significance of azimuth angle errors, the spacial distribution of index of refraction must be known.
The primary objective of this paper is to propose a model …

Plastic Models For The Study Of Thermal Stresses, Carl W. Theisen
Plastic Models For The Study Of Thermal Stresses, Carl W. Theisen
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
The purpose of this thesis was to determine and evaluate an experimental method for accurately measuring thermal stresses in structural shapes subjected to large transient thermal gradients, without introducing the problems of high temperature instrumentation, or expensive and elaborate test facilities. Most experimental methods consist of mounting high temperature strain gages on the prototype or model of the metal structure to be evaluated, thermal shocking the structure and then recording the accompanying strains. This method is used quite extensively in the aircraft field, and in others, where the effects of thermal stresses must be considered. However, problems are encountered when …
Radar Back-Scatter Theories For Near-Vertical Incidence And Their Application To An Estimate Of The Lunar Surface Roughness, Harbhajan S. Hayre
Radar Back-Scatter Theories For Near-Vertical Incidence And Their Application To An Estimate Of The Lunar Surface Roughness, Harbhajan S. Hayre
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
This work, after the critical examination of the theoretical background on back-scattering from rough surfaces, offers a new approach to its theory. Various back-scatter theories, as well as the statistical models of terrain and moon assumed therein, are critically reviewed and correlated. A new approach which uses a simple statistical model is then presented for the description of scattering of electromagnetic waves from a rough surface. The statistics of a rough surface are discussed in terms of certain parameters which can be easily associated the surface features, and a new expression for the back-scattering radar cross section per unit area …
A System For Recording Electromagnetic Atmospheric Noise In 30-50 Cps Region, James F. White
A System For Recording Electromagnetic Atmospheric Noise In 30-50 Cps Region, James F. White
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The electromagnetic noise spectrum extends from below 1 cps to above 3,000 mcs. Within this spectrum many phenomena of atmospheric noise have been observed. Those atmospherics which occur in the audio frequency region of the spectrum have been given not only descriptive but also subjective names by many different investigators. As a result, it is often difficult to determine from the literature what aspect of the noise phenomenon is being considered. In addition, references to low frequencies involved in certain experiments are vague. A brief history of atmospherics research is presented here in order to explain the terminology, to show …

A Study Of Gamma-Ray Photoconductivity In Organic Dielectric Materials, Stanley E. Harrison
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The gamma-ray photoconductivities of polyethylene, polystyrene, polyvinylchloride, polypropylene, Teflon, Nylon, Kel-F, and three thermosetting resins denoted as Epoxy 1478-1, 1478-3, and 1478-22 have been measured. The measurements were made at steady-state gamma-ray intensities ranging from 1.0rad(H2O)/min to 3.0 x 105 rads(H2o)/min and at controlled temperatures ranging from 90 degrees Fahrenheit to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Conductivity changes resulting from the steady-state gamma-ray exposures were measured continuously throughout the exposure and after the exposure. The exposure period was of sufficient duration to allow all samples to achieve an equilibrium conductivity value.
The Development Of A Static Pressure Probe For The Interaction Region Of Shock Waves And Boundary Layers, John Rode

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a static pressure probe for measuring static pressures in the region of interaction of a shock wave and a boundary layer. Requirements of such a probe are: small size to permit measurement of pressure variations within the thin boundary layer, pressure coefficient close to unity to permit precise static pressure measurements in regions of unknown and varying velocity and proper response to large pressure gradients.
Power Consumption In Horizontal Cylindrical Tanks, John J. Schlager
Power Consumption In Horizontal Cylindrical Tanks, John J. Schlager
Theses
The general correlation of Power Number vs. Reynolds Number for flat six blade turbines in a horizontal cylindrical tank without baffles has been determined. The correlation has been found to apply to this system and corresponds to the 4 - 10% baffle region in the vertical cylindrical tank as determined by Rushton, et. al. (1)
An important variable to be considered is the length of tank to impeller diameter ratio which was found to seriously affect the power consumption.
A power fall off was observed at high Reynolds Numbers and coincided with visual vortexing. This power fall off was found …

A Qualitative Study On An Exploding Wire Fuse, W.D. Lacoss
A Qualitative Study On An Exploding Wire Fuse, W.D. Lacoss
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
This study was undertaken in an effort to develop basic concepts of normal operating fuse criteria that will apply to capacitor energy storage systems. To develop ideas germane to normal fuse operating limits, it was necessary to consider certain principles that preceded this development: (1) A review had to be made of some of the experimental work on the exploding wire phenomenon to indicate a possible application as a fuse; (2) A typical circuit requiring such a fuse had to be described schematically and analyzed to show the dependency between the circuit parameters and the necessary conditions for obtaining fusing …

A Study Of The Recrystallization And Polygonization Of High Purity Aluminum, Robert Leon Wright
A Study Of The Recrystallization And Polygonization Of High Purity Aluminum, Robert Leon Wright
Masters Theses
"Laue back reflection patterns were used along with visual examination in evaluating the characteristics of the annealed structure of high purity (99.99%) aluminum single crystals which had been deformed by elongation. It was found that the glide strain and annealing temperature are primary factors to be considered with respect to the structural changes occurring during annealing.
It was determined that the glide strain must be above a certain critical value to cause recrystallization; below the critical value polygonization will predominate in the annealed structure regardless of the annealing temperature.
The single crystals used in the investigation were grown by the …
