Characterization And Pollutional Contribution Of Stormwater Runoff From A Small Urban Area., John Lamb Wendleton Jan 1974

Characterization And Pollutional Contribution Of Stormwater Runoff From A Small Urban Area., John Lamb Wendleton

Masters Theses

"Stormwater runoff from urban areas has long been recognized as a pollutional source, however, only in the last decade has there been an extensive eff ort to measure its effect on receiving lakes and streams. Because runoff from small urban communities has received limited attention, this investigation was undertaken to determine the quality and pollutional contribution of stormwater runoff from a small urban area. The specific objectives of the study were: to characterize and correlate runoff quality with land use activity and to qualitatively and quantitatively measure the pollutants discharged with respect to time.

Runoff from 3 test watersheds in …

Application Of An Inverse Heat Conduction Technique To A Simulated Injection Mold., Noel Joy Rytter Jan 1974

Application Of An Inverse Heat Conduction Technique To A Simulated Injection Mold., Noel Joy Rytter

Masters Theses

"An analytical model was constructed to investigate the heat transfer in an injection mold for which the temperature was controlled by a special mold heating-cooling process. Several techniques were used to test the validity and accuracy of the analytical model of the mold and to explain some singularities that occurred. It was determined that the thickness of the plastic part being molded is the primary factor affecting the minimum cycle time for the molding operation. Also, abrupt changes in temperature on the molding surfaces are very difficult to obtain because this requires drastic temperature changes for the working fluid that …

Effect Of Dissolved Water On Physical Properties Of Silver Borate Glasses, E Richard Reynolds Jan 1974

Effect Of Dissolved Water On Physical Properties Of Silver Borate Glasses, E Richard Reynolds

Masters Theses

"The effect of dissolved water on borate glasses containing 4-20 mol % Ag2O was investigated. Water was dissolved in the glasses by bubbling with a carrier gas (oxygen) containing different partial pressures of water vapor. A minimum in water solubility was found at 11 mol % Ag2O. Water contents in excess of 0.5 mol % H2O did not have a great effect on the transition temperature or the dilatometric softening point. Below 15 mol % Ag2O, the water content had no effect on the thermal expansion coefficients. Beyond 15 mol % Ag …

Investigation Of The Electric Field In The Vicinity Of A Water Drop Adhering To A Conductor, Jamnarn Hokierti

Masters Theses

"Electric field calculations in the vicinity of a conductor above ground are developed with constraints on the distance from the conductor for which the electric field equations can be applied for practical applications. The electric field in the vicinity of a small water drop adhering to the conductor has been calculated. Application of this electric field in the vicinity of the water drop has been used to compute the apparent surface charges and also the forces on the small water drop surface. Methods for the calculation of space charge due to ionization on the water drop has been suggested"--Abstract, page …

Combined Forced And Free Convection On A Vertical Cylinder And Flat Plate, Aleksandros Mucoglu Jan 1974

Combined Forced And Free Convection On A Vertical Cylinder And Flat Plate, Aleksandros Mucoglu

Masters Theses

"In the study of fluid flow over heated surfaces, it is customary to neglect the effects of buoyancy force when the flow is horizontal. However, such a practice is not justified when the forced flow is along an inclined or a vertical surface, because under these conditions the buoyancy force modifies considerably the flow field and hence the heat transfer rate from the surface. Such a flow is termed combined forced and free convective flow.

The present study is concerned with the effects of buoyancy force on forced convection along an isothermal vertical cylinder and a flat plate. This type …

The Investigation Of Video Sensitivity And Data Processing Errors Encountered In An Airborne Receiver, James Lee Hamilton Jan 1974

The Investigation Of Video Sensitivity And Data Processing Errors Encountered In An Airborne Receiver, James Lee Hamilton

Masters Theses

"The investigation of video sensitivity and both biphase demodulation and Doppler shift processing errors is performed. The effect of pass band ripple on the noise bandwidth of two pole filters is developed. The effect of feedback on the effective noise figure of a high gain IF (Intermediate Frequency) amplifier is investigated and discussed. An analysis of a limiting amplifier-biphase demodulator circuit is attempted. A computer simulation of this same circuit is also performed and the results are compared to measurements taken in the laboratory. With respect to multipath corrupted input signals, a differential phase shift keyed biphase demodulator is shown …

Diurnal Solar Heating And Cooling Of A Water Reservoir, Stephen Patrick Lepper Jan 1974

Diurnal Solar Heating And Cooling Of A Water Reservoir, Stephen Patrick Lepper

Masters Theses

"The transient diurnal heating of a water reservoir by solar radiation; and its cooling by surface convection, evaporation, and radiation emission was analytically modeled. The directional and spectral properties of the incident solar radiation, the air-water interface, and the selective attenuation of radiant energy by the water were properly included in the analysis. The diurnal vertical temperature distribution was predicted by numerically solving the energy equation using a finite difference technique. It was determined that the surface boundary conditions and the selective absorption of radiant energy by the water strongly influence the thermal stratification of stagnant water.

The diurnal compensating …

A Systems Approach To Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Training Programs, Jesse Michael Haverstick Jan 1974

A Systems Approach To Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Training Programs, Jesse Michael Haverstick

Masters Theses

"The evaluation of the effectiveness of training programs has long been recognized as a necessity in determining the allocation of investment. However, much of industry, today, still does not use an easily administered, systematic, and reliable method for determining training program effectiveness for their salaried (managerial) personnel. It is easily seen that determining training program effectiveness is not a one-shot, one-time event, but a continual process, whose aim, ultimately, is increased productivity. For the effectiveness of a training program to be adequately monitored, these four areas should be measured: (1) trainee attitude, (2) learning, (3) behavior change, and (4) productivity …

A Discrete Approach To Surface Interpolation, Jerry Lee Albert Sandvos Jan 1974

A Discrete Approach To Surface Interpolation, Jerry Lee Albert Sandvos

Masters Theses

"An equidistant spacing of two dimensional data points is a requirement of most automated analysis routines. In this thesis, a method of generating such equispaced data from randomly spaced data is developed and implemented by a set of computer routines. The method represents the study area as a two dimensional spatial array, in which each array cell represents the data value of a subarea of the study area. A routine sorts and places the data in the array. Missing values in the array are interpolated from nearest neighbors. Filtering is used to smooth errors and a contouring routine is used …

A simulation experiment was conducted using a test situation description (scenario) to reflect the impact of management decisions and actions on the resulting allocation of resources and timeliness of training program activities. Conclusions are drawn regarding the utility and implications of the system dynamics …

A Comparison Of N-Path And Digital Filters For Band Pass Applications, Stephen Cooperman Jan 1974

A Comparison Of N-Path And Digital Filters For Band Pass Applications, Stephen Cooperman

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The classic problem of achieving high Q, band pass, inductorless filters has been traditionally attacked by applying active RC networks. This approach suffers from the faults of poor economy, lack of stability of performance with time and temperature, and high network performance sensitivity to component changes. The problem is reviewed from the aspect of applying techniques other than operational amplifier RC filters. The techniques presented are those of N-Path (switching) and Digital Filters. The underlying theory of both methods is explored and a design example for each of the techniques is presented. These designs are then compared on the basis …

Electroplating, James G. Farrell Jan 1974

Electroplating, James G. Farrell

OTS Master's Level Projects & Papers

Electrometallurgical industries comprise an important segment of the world's manufacture of metal products. These industries involve three major categories: electrowinnowing, electrorefining and electroplating. Electrowinnowing consists of purifying raw ore to a relatively pure metal by electrolysis. Extraction of aluminum from bauxite is an example. Electrorefining involves electrolysis of metallic solutions to recover or produce extremely pure metal. Recovery of precious metals is often done by electrorefining. Electroplating involves the coating of one metal or object with another metal for various reasons. The chief reasons are the protection of a part from corrosion or its beautification. Another type of electroplating is …

Fugitive Particulate From Highway Construction, Kennard F. Kosky Jan 1974

Fugitive Particulate From Highway Construction, Kennard F. Kosky

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

National ambient air quality standards for particulate matter have been promulgated since April, 1971. While effects of stationary sources on these standards have been examined, little research has been accomplished on the effects of fugitive particulate. This thesis examines the environmental impact of a fugitive dust source, Highway Construction. Using the High-Volume reference method for particulate sampling, the effect of Highway construction was determined. An analysis of concentrations, distance influences, meteorological influences, particle sizes and construction influences is presented. The data obtained from this study indicates the major influence of concentrations is a function of distance and sampling height. Particle …

Two Dimensional Radiant Interchange Between Two Isothermal Semi-Infinite Parallel Strips., Stanley Earl Mckinney Jan 1974

Two Dimensional Radiant Interchange Between Two Isothermal Semi-Infinite Parallel Strips., Stanley Earl Mckinney

Masters Theses

"Four straight forward solution methods were used to determine the two-dimensional variation of the radiosity on two identical constant temperature, gray, semi-infinite parallel strips. Physical convergence parameters were developed for the one-dimensional case and extended to two dimensions. A study using these parameters was undertaken to identify the preferable method. The solutions obtained with this "best method" agree well with the one-dimensional solutions. The error is estimated to be less than one percent" -- Abstract, p. ii

The Effects Of Variations In The Excitation Parameters Of Blast Waves On The High Frequency Response Of Circular Rings, Paul John Mirabella Jan 1974

The Effects Of Variations In The Excitation Parameters Of Blast Waves On The High Frequency Response Of Circular Rings, Paul John Mirabella

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The high frequency response of a circular ring of rectangular cross section interior to a conical shell excited by a blast wave is examined. The ring supports a rigidly attached mass during excitation. It is hypothesized that the response is a function of the four excitation parameters which characterize the loading. These are: peak reflected pressure; characteristic time (pulse duration); wave engulfment time; and circumferential distribution. These parameters are varied over a range of interest in an effort to ascertain the structural sensitivity to such perturbations. A series of tests sponsored by the Department of the Army and the Martin …

An Application Of Hamilton's Principle To Diffraction Of Light By Ultrasound, Daniel F. Waterhouse Jan 1974

An Application Of Hamilton's Principle To Diffraction Of Light By Ultrasound, Daniel F. Waterhouse

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A covariant form of Hamilton's Principle of Stationary Action is formulated and used to solve the general eiconal equation describing the wave function of light in a medium carrying ultrasound. Tensor notation is reviewed and the tensor form of Maxwell's equations is developed. Boundary equation that the field quantities must satisfy in order for the variation of Hamilton's action integral to be stationary are determined and used to form the generalized eiconal equation of geometrical optics. The rays are introduced and through a canonical transformation the eiconal for the diffracted medium is solved and plotted.
