A Theoretical And Experimental Investigation Of Single Phase Flow Through A Small Centrifugal Pump In Three Quadrants Of Operation, Lee Charles Cadwallader Jan 1983

A Theoretical And Experimental Investigation Of Single Phase Flow Through A Small Centrifugal Pump In Three Quadrants Of Operation, Lee Charles Cadwallader

Masters Theses

"The operating characteristics of a conventional centrifugal pump have been investigated, both theoretically and experimentally, in three modes of operation with single phase liquid water at atmospheric pressure and room temperature.

Simple one-dimensional theory has been used to evaluate the theoretical pump performance, and these evaluations are compared to actual experimental data. The actual data shows the degradation effects of flow friction and shock losses that the theory does not take into account. The comparison of the curves illustrates these differences.

The data obtained compares well to and reinforces data from experiments found in the literature review.

Based on the …

Sintering Of Lif-Fluxed Srtio₃, Marie-Christine P. Proudian

Masters Theses

"Lithium fluoride (LiF) is used to enhance the sinterability of perovskites, as it results in the formation of a liquid phase. In this study, the mechanism and kinetics of sintering for LiF-fluxed strontium titanate (SrTiO3) were investigated. The Sr/Ti ratio was varied between 0.98 and 1.03, and the LiF content in the green compact ranged from 0.5 to 2.0 weight percent. Sintering was conducted at temperatures between 695° and 925°C for isothermal dilatometric shrinkage measurements for time intervals of 6000 seconds or less. Weight loss, shrinkage, density and porosity measurements were conducted on samples isothermally sintered between 690° …

Analyzing And Predicting Natural Circulation In A Snupps's Pwr Using "Retran-01", Roger Lee Boyer Jan 1983

Analyzing And Predicting Natural Circulation In A Snupps's Pwr Using "Retran-01", Roger Lee Boyer

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this project is to predict the natural circulation start-up test for the Standardized Nuclear Unit Power Plant System (SNUPPS). In order to make this prediction, a best-estimate, thermal-hydraulic computer code called RETRAN-01 is used.

The start-up test procedures require the simultaneous tripping of all four reactor coolant pumps (RCPs). Natural circulation is confirmed when the three test acceptance criteria have been met. Since this transient is symmetrical, a one-loop approximation of the Nuclear Steam Supply System (NSSS) is normally considered adequate in the nuclear industry. However, there is a concern over how to model the four actual …

A Technique For Obtaining Very Efficient Dynamical Equations For On-Line Computation Of Joint Forces Of Robotic Mechanisms, Dennis A. Dohogne Jan 1983

A Technique For Obtaining Very Efficient Dynamical Equations For On-Line Computation Of Joint Forces Of Robotic Mechanisms, Dennis A. Dohogne

Masters Theses

"In order to increase the operational speed and positional accuracy of robotic mechanisms, on-line force control has been proposed. Because of the complexity of exact dynamical formulations, real-time computation of joint forces may be too slow.

Since force control is accomplished with a dedicated computer, unique, dedicated sets of force equations are justified. An efficient force computation technique based on the algebraic expansion and recombination of exact dynamics formulations is presented. Developments of the robotics matrix notation and of a Lagrangian dynamics formulation are also presented. A generalized three link manipulator model is used to compare the computational complexities of …

The Influence Of Additives And Their Interactions On Copper Electrorefining, Chwan-Tsann Wang Jan 1983

The Influence Of Additives And Their Interactions On Copper Electrorefining, Chwan-Tsann Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

"Protein colloid (glue), thiourea, Avitone and chloride ion are the most common additives used electrorefining copper. The polarization behavior of these additives, single and combined, was studied by cyclic voltammetry techniques in conjunction with stationary and rotating disc electrodes. In the stationary electrode work, different protein colloids give substantially different results in polarization or interaction with other additives. The role played by Avitone is not clear, but it does somewhat modify other additives in the electrolyte. Thiourea can cause a depolarized peak and a polarized plateau depending on the concentration, the other additives present and the potential selected. Chloride ion …

The Performance Of Full Response Multi-H Modems In Practical Environments, Mark Alan Wickert Jan 1983

The Performance Of Full Response Multi-H Modems In Practical Environments, Mark Alan Wickert

Doctoral Dissertations

The power and bandwidth efficiency of multi-h continuous- phase modulation (CPM) schemes in practical environments are considered. Specific impairments considered are transmitter filtering, amplitude limiting, and receiver symbol timing, phase error, and decision depth sensitivities. A coherent receiver model is employed which uses the Viterbi algorithm (VA) to perform maximum likelihood sequence estimation. For (2/4,3/4), ll (3/8,4/8) and (4/8,5/8) linear phase codes, a signal-to noise ratio (SNR) power gain of 1.85 dB, 1.9 dB, and 2.4 dB at a bit error rate (BER) of 10-5 over differentially coded minimum-shift keyed (MSK) modulation are obtained, respectively. With transmitter filtering the …

To provide some background on the subject, a description of a data communication system is presented, and the possible sources of error are explored in some detail. Data transmission formats are described, and …

Stability Analysis Of Closed Surge Tanks By Phase-Plane Method, Mostafa A. Sabbah Jan 1983

Stability Analysis Of Closed Surge Tanks By Phase-Plane Method, Mostafa A. Sabbah

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The governing equations describing water level oscillations in a closed surge tank with compressed air at the top of the tank are a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations if the hydraulic system is analyzed as a lumped system. These oscillations are stable or unstable depending on the parameters of the plant and the type and magnitude of the disturbance.

The present available stability criterion has been developed by linearizing the governing equations and is, therefore, valid only for small disturbances.

In the research reported herein, the governing equations are normalized to reduce the number of parameters from nine to …

Flow Tube Reactions Of Selected Chlorocarbons With Molecular Hydrogen Or Water Vapor In A Microwave Induced Plasma Reactor, Robert Benedict Barat Jan 1983

Flow Tube Reactions Of Selected Chlorocarbons With Molecular Hydrogen Or Water Vapor In A Microwave Induced Plasma Reactor, Robert Benedict Barat

Theses

The reactions of various chlorinated hydrocarbons with molecular hydrogen or water vapor have been studied in a microwave plasma tubular flow reactor. The investigation of such reactions is desirable because the often toxic parent chlorocarbons are transformed to more thermodynamically stable and relatively non-toxic products by removal of' chlorine atoms as hydrogen chloride. Present detoxification technologies generally employ thermal oxidation as a means of disposal of chlorocarbons, which does not offer a thermodynamically stable sink for the chlorine atoms.

The experimental apparatus included feed introduction systems, a microwave plasma reactor, and full product analyses. The feed systems enabled use of …

Motion Of Viscous Liquid In Rotating Cylinder, Chicheng Wu Dec 1982

Motion Of Viscous Liquid In Rotating Cylinder, Chicheng Wu

Dissertations

A computer model for the withdrawl and buildup of the fluid from the pool bounded on the horizontal, rotating, cylindrical surface has been developed. For a incompressible Newtonian fluid, the model is based upon the modified SOLA-SURF algorithm to solve the finite-difference form of Navier-Stokes equations on primitive variables. A hybird of centered and partial donor cell differencings is applied to the momentum convective flux. In each time cycle, the cell velocity is adjusted by the pressure corrector and iterates to satisfy the equation of continuity. The free surface position is approximated by a surface height function derived from kinematic …

A Finite Element For The Three-Dimensional Deformation Of A Circular Ring Of Arbitrary Cross Section, Jeffrey Stuart Knowlton Dec 1982

A Finite Element For The Three-Dimensional Deformation Of A Circular Ring Of Arbitrary Cross Section, Jeffrey Stuart Knowlton

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

A two-node finite element for relatively compact, solid curved beams is derived. A node is located at the centroid of each end of the beam, and each node has six degrees of freedom, consisting of three translations and three rotations in mutually perpendicular directions. The element stiffness matrix has dimensions 12x12. A cylindrical polar coordinate system is used to express the components of the associated displacement and load vectors. As a consequence of the assumption of a nonzero cross-section product of inertia, deflections in the plane and out of the plane of beam curvature are coupled. Hence in-plane loads can …

Removal Of Fluoborate From Electroplating Rinse Water By Ion Flotation, Ray Haralson Oct 1982

Removal Of Fluoborate From Electroplating Rinse Water By Ion Flotation, Ray Haralson

Dissertations

A problem exists in the removal of fluoborate from electroplating waste rinse water. The normally used waste treatment methods are not effective and the vacuum evaporation process now being tried is expensive and energy intensive. Experiments were conducted and an alternative treatment process which shows substantial removals of the fluoborate was developed. This can be effectively done using ion flotation techniques. A broad range of surfactants were screened for usefulness in this process and it was found that an aliphatic amine acetate was usable in this process. Operating parameters for the process were investigated, and the removal mechanism was determined …

Nonlinear Analysis Of Shear Walls And Shear Panels By Finite Element Method, Erhan Atay Oct 1982

Nonlinear Analysis Of Shear Walls And Shear Panels By Finite Element Method, Erhan Atay

Theses

The objective of this work was to determine the feasibility of applying the Finite Element Method to Nonlinear Analyses of Shear Walls and Shear Panels.

Various existing methods are reviewed and discussed.

These studies determined that the application of Finite Element Method to Nonlinear Analysis of Shear Walls and Shear Panels is being misused in many cases but is very practical and promising where justified. However more studies are needed for the manner of modeling to be used to connect the wall to beam and slab elements that frame into that wall. To model the coupled beams as plane stress …

Simulation Of Traffic At A T-Intersection Using Slam, Karen M. Anderson Oct 1982

Simulation Of Traffic At A T-Intersection Using Slam, Karen M. Anderson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The flow of traffic at an intersection is often controlled by a traffic signal. This research report models a T-intersection with a disjoint network for each direction of traffic flow, eastbound, westbound and southbound. The traffic signal is modeled with a fourth network. Three types of signal control (pretimed, semi-actuated and full-actuated) are modeled to examine the effect of each type on the average delay time and average length of queues for each lane of traffic queue at the intersection. The computer models presented in the report use SLAM computer language to simulate the traffic signal and vehicle flow.

Development Of A 64 To 1 Monolithic Analog Multiplexer, Vincent H. Angleton Oct 1982

Development Of A 64 To 1 Monolithic Analog Multiplexer, Vincent H. Angleton

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A 64 to 1 monolithic multiplexer for video signal switching applications was designed. The performance analysis and the testing of the first devices fabricated and packaged show close agreement in on channel resistance and on channel bandwidth. Other requirements, such as off channel isolation and output signal distortion, have poorer agreement in the calculated values versus the measured data. Arguments for these differences are presented.

Speech Spectral Modeling And Speech Synthesis Using Finite Impulse Response Digital Filters, Paul Edward Gordy Oct 1982

Speech Spectral Modeling And Speech Synthesis Using Finite Impulse Response Digital Filters, Paul Edward Gordy

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Synthetic speech can be produced using a discrete-time model of human speech production. This model depends on the use of digital filters to model the spectral characteristics of the vocal tract. Speech spectra can be efficiently encoded using a set of principal components basis vectors; however, these vectors are not in a convenient mathematical form for directly determining a digital filter for the speech production model. If discrete cosine basis vectors are used to approximate the principal components basis vectors, then the cosine basis vector coefficients can be used to determine a Finite Impulse Response(FIR) digital filter for speech spectral …

Fractionation Of Multicomponent Mixtures By Staged Sequence Cyclic Process And Parametric Pumping, Charles Omotayo Kerobo Sep 1982

Fractionation Of Multicomponent Mixtures By Staged Sequence Cyclic Process And Parametric Pumping, Charles Omotayo Kerobo

Dissertations

The continuous fractionation of multicomponent fluid mixtures has been experimentally and theoretically investigated by staged sequence cyclic process and parametric pumping operating in the direct thermal mode.

A multicolumn staged sequence cyclic process for the separation of solute mixtures was developed. The criteria necessary for the continuous fractionation of a system of n solutes with n+1 columns arranged in a series operated with n+1 cyclic variables is presented. The feasibility for practical application of this process was demonstrated by fractionating the model system, O-xylene-Anisole-n-heptane on silica gel. The separation was modeled by one column staged sequence experimental data and by …

Separation Of Proteins Via Ph Parametric Pumping With Electric Field, Helen Conway Hollein Sep 1982

Separation Of Proteins Via Ph Parametric Pumping With Electric Field, Helen Conway Hollein

Dissertations

A new semi-continuous parametric pumping process for the separation of protein mixtures has been developed, based on cyclic variation of pH and electric field. The model system used for this process consisted of a mixture of human serum albumin and human hemoglobin in contact with CM Sepharose cation exchanger. Experimental results show that the protein separation via the pH parapump with electric field is two to three times greater than the results which are obtained in batch chromatography or via either single-column or multi-column parapumps with cyclic variation of pH and ionic strength.

The separation in the new process depends …
