Theses
This thesis aims to explore the use of Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-L (ZIF-L) as a support for immobilizing alcalase and its potency in producing protein hydrolysates. ZIF-L was synthesized at room temperature using an aqueous solution, and alcalase was immobilized through adsorption batch experiment. The successful immobilization of alcalase on ZIF-L was confirmed through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The maximum adsorption capacity of alcalase on ZIF-L was determined to be 672.1 ± 5.5 mg g-1 at 40°C using an initial protein concentration of 5 mg mL-1. Adsorption equilibrium data …
3d Printed Microfluidic Fabrication Methodology, Characterization, Mechanical Design, And Applications In Electrostatic Artificial Muscles And Benthic Microbial Fuel Cells, Terak B. Hornik
Master's Theses
The fabrication of microfluidic devices often requires specialized methods. The development of these methods requires careful characterization and understanding of the processes involved. Using primarily PolyJet 3D printing technology, microfluidics offers a wide scope of applications such as microfluidic benthic microbial fuel cells (MBMFCs) and electrostatic artificial muscles. MBMFCs benefit from the confinement of the microbes resulting in close proximity between the electrode and the organisms. Using a modular design called the Sponge, assembly and upscaling is possible. Electrostatic artificial muscles benefit from a microfluidic approach due to the non-linearity of electrostatic attraction creating disproportionate benefits when miniaturized. When designed …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Understanding the effects of substance use on decision-making is critical for both clinical andtranslational research. In this thesis, I present two complementary studies that explore decision- making behavior in rodents with a focus on alcohol consumption and novel experimental frame- works. The first study examines the impact of acute alcohol consumption on decision-making in a behavioral approach-avoidance task. Rats were presented with a concurrent choice of consuming alcohol and sucrose mixtures across four distinct concentrations, allowing for the analysis of ap- proach or avoidance behavior. Sex-dependent differences emerged, with male rats demonstrating a significantly higher tendency to approach higher alcohol …

Precision Bottlebrush Polymers: Synthesis, Characterization, And Structure-Property Relationship, Nduka D. Ogbonna
Precision Bottlebrush Polymers: Synthesis, Characterization, And Structure-Property Relationship, Nduka D. Ogbonna
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Bottlebrush polymers, a type of non-linear polymer characterized by densely grafted side chains on a linear backbone, offer a versatile platform for material design due to their unique thermomechanical and rheological behavior. Addressing the grand challenge of achieving structural precision for bottlebrush polymers remains crucial because traditional disperse mixtures are plagued with batch variability, limiting our ability to control their functions, and correlate theoretical predictions with experiments. To date, narrow-dispersity bottlebrush polymers remain highly heterogeneous, as they are typically synthesized from disperse linear building blocks.
To address this longstanding challenge of structural heterogeneity in brush polymers, the primary objective of …

Impacts Of Phosphate And Residual Free Chlorine On The Precipitation, Stability And Dissolution Of Lead Corrosion Products, Yao Ma
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Lead release from lead pipes into drinking water is a critical threat to public health. Orthophosphate addition is an established method of controlling lead concentrations in tap water. Many phosphate-based inhibitors currently used by utilities are blends of orthophosphate and polyphosphate. Orthophosphate can limit lead release from pipes by forming low-solubility lead phosphate solids on pipe inner surfaces. In contrast, polyphosphate can accelerate lead release by forming soluble lead-phosphate complexes. Due to the potential conversion from polyphosphate to orthophosphate in the distribution system and to complex dynamics of water chemistry in lead service lines (LSLs), the net impact of a …

Design Of End Bent Piles For Downdrag, Tanna Frye
Design Of End Bent Piles For Downdrag, Tanna Frye
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Embankments are commonly used for bridge approaches, with mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls being the preferred choice in Florida. However, the construction of embankments leads to the settlement of the underlying soil, regardless of soil type. When piles are driven before embankment construction, the initial settlement of the original soil creates relative movement between the pile and the surrounding soil, introducing frictional forces. When the existing soils move downward relative to the pile, a downward-oriented side shear known as downdrag is introduced. While downdrag is addressed in current codes and textbooks, it is often only briefly mentioned and primarily in …

Actuation And Stabilization Of Volume-Efficient Origami-Inspired Mechanisms, Hunter T. Pruett
Theses and Dissertations
Trends in the aerospace industry are driving payloads to be smaller and less expensive while yet delivering comparatively large antennas. Deployable reflectarray antennas (RA) are the object of much research to meet these demands because they operate in a flat plane and are easier to stow than parabolic reflector antennas. Because they operate in flat plane, deployable RAs are well-suited to thickness-accommodated origami-inspired mechanisms. This work addresses pattern selection and modification, thickness accommodation, actuation, and stabilization of origami-inspired mechanisms intended to be used as RAs. First, a modified Miura-ori pattern termed volume-efficient Miura-ori (VEMO) is introduced, selected for its ability …

Improving Ground-Based Measurements And Understanding Of Mineral Dust And Trace Elements In Ambient Particulate Matter On A Global Scale, Xuan Liu
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Mineral dust is a major component of ambient particulate matter (PM) globally, affecting visibility, air quality, human health, climate, and biogeochemistry. Dust mass cannot be directly measured and therefore is typically estimated using a dust equation to sum common oxides of major crustal elements based on measured elemental composition data. Both an accurate dust equation and reliable elemental data are essential to accurately estimate dust mass. However, most dust equations fail to account for all major dust compounds, exclude non-dust components of some elements, or account for regional variations in dust composition. Attenuation effects for light elements measured by the …
