Low Cost Ndvi Aerial Imager For Plant Health Monitoring, Roe Crawford , '25, Brandon Mickelson , '25
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
Due to the spread of Beech Leaf Disease, Swarthmore College and the Scott Arboretum expect to lose all of the beech trees on campus in the next five years. Methods of monitoring plant health are required to act as early warnings for tree loss so that the Arboretum can manage deadfall, erosion, and other adverse effects. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is a multispectral imaging technique that can assess plant health. NDVI is a common satellite remote sensing technique that has shown promise in drone remote sensing applications. With recent decreases in the costs of optical components, we determined that …

Nauplius Swimming Robot, Adelle Robison , '25
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
Barnacle nauplii swim in conditions described by a low Reynolds number of around 2 as a result of their small size. It is not fully understood how their method of swimming allows them to move around in an environment with such a low Reynolds number. Additionally, it is unknown to what degree their horns, tail, and the hair-like bristles on their appendages contribute to their motion and their survival. The robot prototype created for this project mimics the features and swimming method of nauplii in order to help study nauplius locomotion and the functions of their unique morphology. Additionally, this …
Building A New System To Advance Vortex-Induced Vibration Energy Harvesting, Jacob Sherman , '25
Building A New System To Advance Vortex-Induced Vibration Energy Harvesting, Jacob Sherman , '25
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
When a cylindrical object is placed in a moving fluid of sufficiently high Reynolds number, vortices will form and be shed in the wake of the object. Vortex-Induced Vibrations (VIV) will occur on the cylinder when the frequency at which vortices are shed approached the natural frequency of the structure. Harvesting energy on a small scale from VIV is a promising new method of generating electricity from fluid motion, but more data is needed to investigate the parameter space for such a system [4]. The goal of this E90 project was to design and implement a robust system that could …

Emission Behavior At The Single Emitter Scale From A Porous Media Ionic Liquid Ion Source, Thomas Victor Kerber
Dissertations
Ionic liquid ion sources (ILIS) are being developed as one solution to fill a technology gap in low power, high efficiency, high specific impulse space propulsion systems. With a sufficiently intense electric field applied between an emitter electrode and an extractor electrode, charged particles are extracted from the fluid surface and accelerated out of the thruster. In this work, three experimental campaigns examine emission behavior of a single emitter ILIS made of porous material that allows passive propellant feed via capillary action of the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EMI-BF4).
Repeated measurements of the emitter and extractor current as …

Robust Spacecraft Autonomy For Deep Space Exploration In Special Euclidean Group Se(3), Matthew Wittal
Robust Spacecraft Autonomy For Deep Space Exploration In Special Euclidean Group Se(3), Matthew Wittal
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Over the past half-century, humanity has gained extensive experience conducting manned spaceflight near Earth. Arguably, "near Earth" could even include the Moon — the most distant destination humans have reached. However, "near" in this work primarily refers low Earth orbit (LEO). One could argue that we have not truly left Earth since the Apollo, as spacecraft in some LEOs remain subject to atmospheric drag thus emphasizing their continued connection to Earth's immediate environment. Reflecting on this, it becomes clear that humanity has largely remained bound to Earth’s immediate vicinity since the Apollo missions reached the Moon. However, that is set …
