Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
Hemp fibers dyed with natural dyes are environmentally sustainable, but it is typically difficult to achieve an intense shade and washing durability. In this study, mercerization and cationization using polyelectrolyte, Poly-diallyldimethylammonium chloride (polyDADMAC), were chosen to enhance the dyeing efficiency and mechanical properties. Indigo and lac were chosen as natural dyes due to their widespread use. SEM demonstrated that untreated fibers contained the non-cellulose boundary layer on the surfaces, but after mercerization, the surfaces were smoother, making them suitable for absorbing natural dyes. In agreement with the FT-IR, the spectra of non-cellulose disappeared after mercerizing. Following cationization, the FT-IR spectra …

Phase Separation Promotes Fcc-Phase Mechanical Twinning In Alcocrfemo0.05ni2 High Entropy Alloy, Zifeng Zhang, Liang Chu, Jiqing Zhao, Bing Xu, Qilu Ye
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
The AlCoCrFeMo0.05Ni2 high entropy alloy (HEA) can remarkably enhance its ductility through high-temperature annealing. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanism remains under explored. Herein, we utilized molecular dynamics simulations (MD) to calculate the generalized stacking fault energy (GSFE) curves and uniaxial tensile behavior. Notably, the twin inclination of the FCC phase increases significantly after annealing. During plastic deformation, the FCC phase in the annealed alloy exhibits a substantially higher formation of twinning and stacking faults compared to the as-cast alloy. This increased twin inclination after annealing is the fundamental mechanism contributing to the enhancement of high-temperature ductility.

Osteochondral lesions, which affect both the cartilage and the bone, present significant challenges in treatment due to the complex mechanical and biochemical properties of these tissues. A crucial consideration in developing tissue replacements for these lesions is the simultaneous regeneration of cartilage and calcified cartilage, which forms the transition zone to bone. Our current study aims to fabricate a bilayer polymeric hydrogel designed not only to support cartilage regeneration but also to serve as an interface between cartilage and bone. The bilayer hydrogel was created by combining oxidized bacterial nanocellulose, gelatin, and alginate in one layer, while the other layer …

In this study, it was aimed to develop a biodegradable metallic plate that is an alternative to bioinert metal plates. The main advantage of using biodegradable materials for implants is that they can be gradually replaced with the patient's own tissue, which reduces the need for additional surgeries to remove the implant after it has served its purpose. Magnesium and its alloys can provide biocompatibility as orthopedic implant materials. Mg-Zn-Ca and Mg-Zn-Ca-Sn alloys were prepared using the gravity die casting method. Zn (1.0 wt% and 2.0 wt%) and Sn (0.0 wt%, 0.5 wt% and 1.0 wt%) ratios were used as …

The disposal of vinasse, a nutrient-rich by-product of ethanol production, is challenging because of the low pH and emissions of harmful gases and smells. Here, biochars were produced by pyrolysis of mixtures of filter cake and vinasse (0.25 w/v to 1 w/v) at 550℃. The effects of filter cake to vinasse ratios on the biochar yield, pH, ash content, total nutrient (P, K, Ca, and Mg) content, and nutrient availability were investigated. Increasing the filter cake to vinasse ratio increased the biochar yield and ash content and lowered the biochar pH from 10.3 for 0.25-BC to 8.2 for filter cake …
