Some Biological And Physical Properties Of Laser Deposited Hydroxyapatite Based Films, Tatjana Dostalova, Lucie Himmlova, Miroslav Jelinek, Jirina Bartova

Cells and Materials

The preliminary results of biological and physical tests of hydroxyapatite thin films deposited on dental implants by a new technology with the KrF excimer laser ablation method were evaluated. Biological and physical properties were studied and analyzed by the lymphocyte proliferation test and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray analysis, Rutherford backscattering analysis (RBS) and particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) methods. Ten bioceramic films from 45 samples had very good physical and biological properties. Creation of hydroxyapatite thin films with laser ablation can have a positive effect on adhesion of the film and protection for corrosion.

Adsorption Of Proteins At Solid-Liquid Interfaces, Willem Norde Jan 1995

Adsorption Of Proteins At Solid-Liquid Interfaces, Willem Norde

Cells and Materials

This paper concisely reviews the general principles underlying protein adsorption from aqueous solution onto a solid surface. The discussion includes the various stages of the adsorption process, i. e., transport of the protein molecules towards the surface, the absorbed amount under equilibrium conditions, desorption and re-adsorption. Among the interactions that determine the overall protein adsorption process (1 ) redistribution of charged groups in the interfacial layer, (2) changes in the hydration of the sorbent and the protein surface, and (3) structural rearrangements in the protein molecule play major roles. Special attention is given to the relation between the structural stability …

Some Observations On The Structure Of Encrusting Biofilms Of Proteus Mirabilis On Urethral Catheters, C. Winters, D. J. Stickler, N. S. Howe, T. J. Williams, N. Wilkinson, C. J. Buckley Jan 1995

Some Observations On The Structure Of Encrusting Biofilms Of Proteus Mirabilis On Urethral Catheters, C. Winters, D. J. Stickler, N. S. Howe, T. J. Williams, N. Wilkinson, C. J. Buckley

Cells and Materials

A physical model of the bladder has been used to study the process of urinary catheter encrustation. Techniques have been devised for the preparation of sections through these encrustations in situ on the luminal surfaces of catheters and for mapping the distribution of calcium and magnesium in the biofilms. Transmission electron microscopy on these sections showed struvite-like crystals lying in the matrix and in direct contact with the catheter surface. Calcium phosphate ("bioapatite") was distributed throughout the film and many of these amorphous particles appear to have cells at their cores. Freeze-substituted sections of biofilms also showed electron dense materials …

Molten Salt Electrolytes For Electrodeposition Of Cdte Films, Arif Raza, Robert Engelken, Brandon Kemp, Arees Siddiqui, Omer Mustafa

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

We report preliminary investigation of several molten salt electrolytes containing CdCl2 and TeCl4 for the electrodeposition of CdTe films at temperatures well above (>250 °C) those used with aqueous and organic electrolytes. These high temperatures have potential todramatically increase the crystallite size (Poole, Engelken, et al., 1994), as is important for optoelectronic device applications of CdTe, a leading II-VIsemiconductor. This paper willsurvey the results obtained withelectrolytes such as B2O,/HBO2 (m.p. - 230'C), NaCH3COO (m.p. » 324°C), ZnCl2 (m.p. - 283*C), and LiCl/KCl (m.p. * 350 °C), with an emphasis on the latter two. Key material to be presented includes …

Polishing Of Cvd-Diamond Substrates Using Reactive Ion Etching, Gopi M.R. Sirineni, Hameed A. Naseem, W. D. Brown, A. P. Malshe

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Multichip modules (MCM)have proved to be a viable packaging technology for achieving small size and high performance. By their nature, MCMs typically integrate multiple bare die into a module that can be the plastic or ceramic package. As a result, the MCMrequires an efficient mechanism for removing excess heat. Diamond with its excellent thermal conductivity, is the ideal choice as a substrate material for these applications. Chemical vapor deposited (CVD) diamond substrates makes possible the practical realization of a novel diamond based 3-D MCM. However, the diamond films grown by CVD technique are polycrystalline and have non-uniform filmroughness and randomly …

Diagnostics Of Cdte Electrodeposition By Rest Potential Voltammetry, Brandon Kemp, Robert Engelken, Arif Raza, Arees Siddiqui, Omer Mustafa Jan 1995

Diagnostics Of Cdte Electrodeposition By Rest Potential Voltammetry, Brandon Kemp, Robert Engelken, Arif Raza, Arees Siddiqui, Omer Mustafa

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Due to the extreme sensitivity of the partial elemental currents (i.e.,iCd, iTe) and, hence, stoichiometry to deposition voltage, temperature, mass transport, and ambient light intensity during electrodeposition of semiconductor films, it is important to implement in-situ methods for monitoring the stoichiometry and related semiconductor efficacy of the growing film. We report investigation of open circuit rest potential (Eoc) voltammetry as one such method during electrodeposition of CdTe from aprotic electrolytes such as ethylene glycol. Plots of transient open circuit potential versus sweep voltage exhibit distinct transition and plateau structures corresponding to Te, CdTe, and Cd phases and correlating with the …

Construction Resource Allocation Using A Genetic Algorithm, Siripong Malasri, Jennifer R. Martin Jan 1995

Construction Resource Allocation Using A Genetic Algorithm, Siripong Malasri, Jennifer R. Martin

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A proper allocation of limited resources (men, machines, materials, and money) is critical in a construction project. Traditionally, resource allocation problems have been solved using methods in operations research (OR), such as mathematical programming. In recent years, genetic algorithms (GA) have emerged as an effective optimization methodology. One major advantage of the GA approach over the OR approach is that the GA approach is universal for various types of optimization problems, unlike the OR approach which varies depending on the types of problems at hand. This paper shows an application of GA to a resource allocation problem in the construction …

A Fracture Kinetics Analysis Of Hydrogen Embrwi'lement, J Mshana Dec 1994

A Fracture Kinetics Analysis Of Hydrogen Embrwi'lement, J Mshana

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

In studies on stress corrosion cracking caused by hydrogen embrittlement of metals, it has been observed that within the high remperature range rhe Armenius activation energy is negative. This is quite unusual Since ther- mall)' activated crack g.'vwth processes are controlled by positive appar- ent activation energy. The unders/auding of this effect is of inleavst to design and maintenance engineers. The study demonstrates, with a syn- thesis method, a physically rigorous and rational kinetics Of thermally activated processes of some aspects ofenvironment assisted crack growth. It is show that the observed crack growth behavior may be described by single barrier …

Model For Complete Drawdown Of Floating Solids In Stirred Tank Reactors, J Mmbaga Dec 1994

Model For Complete Drawdown Of Floating Solids In Stirred Tank Reactors, J Mmbaga

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

A Semi-empirical model has been developed on the basis of Kolmogoroff's theory of isotropic turbulence to determine the minimum drawdown speed for floating solids in a mechanically agitated vessel. An adjustable pa- rameter in the model is found to be afunction of impeller type and position in a vessel. A simplified representation of macroscopicflow pattern, rep- resenting the circulation flow in a vessel depending on impeller pumping characteristic is developed to account for recirculation pattern.

Measurement Of Dust Resistivity And The Effect Of Filter Operating Parameters On Its Value, S Issangya

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Methods of measuring electrical sensitivity of a dust layer have been outlined and the porous electrodes cell was used to measure the electrical resistivity of a dust layer and to determine the influence of various parameters. Dust layer thickness and applied voltage had no influence. Resistivity depended on particle size, packing density, temperature, and air relative humidity. Glass beads and limestone powders of different mean particle sizes were used. Temperature was varied from 20–100 °C and air moisture ranged from dry to near saturation. The results may help in understanding the performance of electrically enhanced fabric filters, which are influenced …

Experimental Investigation On The Use Of Native Biomass As Biosorbents For Metal Pollutant Removal, R Litto

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Waste water treatment is a perrnunent task. Many novel techniques have emerge in recent years and one of them is using biomass in removing heavy- metals. In this research screening and preliminary optimization experi- ments have identified different types of abundant biomass which can accu- mulate heavy metals such as Fe3*, C03•, Cu2+ and ftvm effluent. Cystoseira Myrica has a high uptake ofCr3+ while Sargassum Polycystum has been found to have a high uptake 0fFe3+. Observed biosorption kinet- ics shows rapid initial stage, followed by slower second stage and the amount of material adsorbed increases linearly as its concentration in …

Evaluation Of The Influence Of The Magnetic System In Relays, D Chambega Dec 1994

Evaluation Of The Influence Of The Magnetic System In Relays, D Chambega

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

The paper evaluates the influence of different cores on the performance of relays. In particular two types ofc-cores, all made from IOW quality mag- netic steel, are considered. The two cores, one butt-constructed and the other interleaved, are mathematically modelled and the tesults are analyzed and obtained experimentally. Then the two sets of results are compared with those ofa c-shaped core of excellent magnetic material with the aim of qualifying the influence of the core material. It is observed that the method of constructing the core also influences the performance.

Design Approach For Small Scale Continuous, Steady State Plants, O Kaunde

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

One of the major steps in the design of a process plant is development of an appiopriate flowsheet. At this step, the technical solutions may be con- sidered in relation to the social and economic factors. In this paper, guide- lines for developing a flowsheet for continuous, steady State process in a developing country environment have been proposed. To illustrate the pro- posed guidelines, a case study involving design of an ethanol distillation plant has been used.

Polymer Supported Z-N Catalysts For C2h4-Polymerization,I: Development Catalyst Preparation Method, S Mteza

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Substantial improvement of low sensitivity pressure transducers aiming at obtaining a more realistic output signal is discussed. The output signal direct from these transducers has deficiencies of amplitude attenuation and phase lag, thus the measured values are not necessarily the true in- stantaneous values. In order to correct for such shortcomings the unit step response of these transducers is also studied experimentally. A math- ematical model is established based on the experimental results to build up a compensation circuit which is then included in the instrumentation setup to eliminate these deficiencies. The effectiveness of the compensated transducer is demonstrated by …
