Short Surface Relief Fabry-Perot Fiber Bragg Gratings For Improved Strain Sensing, Andrew Sieler, Dr. Stephen Schultz Aug 2013

Short Surface Relief Fabry-Perot Fiber Bragg Gratings For Improved Strain Sensing, Andrew Sieler, Dr. Stephen Schultz

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The use of optical fiber as a sensing instrument has become an important application in the optics field. Due to previous research conducted here at BYU1 it is now possible to fabricate Surface Relief Fiber Bragg Gratings, SR-FBGs, which can be used as a temperature or strain sensing instrument. This sensor is lightweight and immune to electromagnetic interference because of the inherent attributes associated with optical fiber. The type of FBG I wish to research, the FP-FBG, will be much more sensitive than a standard SR-FBG. Another quality of optical sensors is the fact that they are so compact they …

High-Speed Full-Spectrum Interrogation Of Fiber Bragg Gratings For Composite Impact Sensing, Spencer Chadderdon, Dr. Richard Selfridge Aug 2013

High-Speed Full-Spectrum Interrogation Of Fiber Bragg Gratings For Composite Impact Sensing, Spencer Chadderdon, Dr. Richard Selfridge

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) sensors are useful for static and dynamic event monitoring which make then suitable for a wide variety of applications. Dynamic interrogation of FBG sensors has primarily been performed using peak-tracking methods that have repetition rates approaching the megahertz range. However, tracking the variations in the peak response of a FBG sensor reflection spectrum can result in inaccurate measurements. For example, when under the influence of vibrations, acoustical noise, and transverse strains FBG sensor spectra associated with impact and vibrations not only have peak shifts, but the reflection spectrum can exhibit dramatic spreading or even peak splitting.

Thermal Protection For Extreme Labor, Christopher Hanks, Dave Morgan Aug 2013

Thermal Protection For Extreme Labor, Christopher Hanks, Dave Morgan

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Many people died when temperatures rose to 115°F in Southeastern Europe in July of 2000(Blumberg). The Sahara Desert exceeds 120°F, creating a nearly inhospitable environment. The temperature off of the Phoenix Airport runway was reported at 150°F the summer of 2009. This very same environment is the workplace of ramp agents who lift and load heavy luggage into passenger in, and day out. Through researching methods of heat transfer, and interviewing workers, I have conceptualized a number of cooling solutions which will protect workers from the heat.

Miniature Linear Ion Trap Fabrication, Hannah Quist, Dr. Aaron Hawkins Aug 2013

Miniature Linear Ion Trap Fabrication, Hannah Quist, Dr. Aaron Hawkins

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Ion trapping is a method of determining the elemental composition of a charged sample, allowing the substance to be properly identified. It uses metal rings or lines with an applied voltage and radio frequency to initially trap the ions in a central region and begin to eject successively larger ions as the radio frequency is increased.

Development/Ballistics Testing Of Lightweight Sandwich-Composite Body Armor, Brian Spencer, Dr. Anton Bowden Aug 2013

Development/Ballistics Testing Of Lightweight Sandwich-Composite Body Armor, Brian Spencer, Dr. Anton Bowden

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Body armor is one of the most important tools used in the protection of soldiers and other armed forces around the world. Although the current style of armor, using Kevlar fiber and ceramic inserts, is generally effective, it is bulky and heavy and can cause overheating and lack of mobility. Our research attempts to remedy these issues by using shear-thickening fluid (STF) impregnated Kevlar XP combined with corrugated plastic to create and test lighter, more effective body armor.

Critical Component Selection For Implementing Barriers To Reverse Engineering, Shane K. Curtis, Dr. Christopher Mattson Aug 2013

Critical Component Selection For Implementing Barriers To Reverse Engineering, Shane K. Curtis, Dr. Christopher Mattson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Reverse engineering is a prominent design strategy in industry, employed by many to uncover the enabling technologies of innovative products. Unfortunately, there is little motivation for original designers to create new products if competitors can reverse engineer these products and reproduce them at a lower development cost. One solution to this problem involves the incorporation of barriers to reverse engineering into products during the design process. These barriers not only increase the cost of reverse engineering but can also improve product performance with only a small increase in manufacturing or development time.

Establishment Of Life Reduction Factors For Microsurfacing, Bryan Wilson, Dr. W Spencer Guthrie Aug 2013

Establishment Of Life Reduction Factors For Microsurfacing, Bryan Wilson, Dr. W Spencer Guthrie

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Since the majority of the pavement network in the United States is already constructed1, most of the attention has turned toward maintaining and reconstructing existing roads. Through routine maintenance of the wearing surface, the life of a pavement is greatly extended and long-term costs greatly reduced. Pavement maintenance treatments range from quick and inexpensive crack-sealing to more intensive surface milling followed by a costly asphalt overlay. One treatment recently put to mainstream use in Utah is microsurfacing. Microsurfacing is often described as the most durable and stable of the available slurry seals. Like other slurries it protects against water ingress, …

Multi-Axial Fiber-Optic Electric Field Sensor, Daniel Perry, Dr. Stephen Schultz Aug 2013

Multi-Axial Fiber-Optic Electric Field Sensor, Daniel Perry, Dr. Stephen Schultz

Journal of Undergraduate Research

High powered microwave weapons use electric fields to overload electronics. We developed a non-intrusive sensor using a technology based on slab coupled optical sensing (SCOS). Each sensor detects the electric field component normal to the surface of the slab. By mounting two of these sensors orthogonally to each other, a more complete image of the electrical field can be obtained. One of the major hurdles of creating a multi-axial SCOS is keeping the size of the sensor small. The size is limited by (1) the size of the sensing material and (2) the ability to package the sensor to maintain …

Makara Journal of Technology

Vacuum freeze drying is an excellent drying method, but it is very energy-intensive because a relatively long drying time is required. This research investigates the utilization of condenser waste heat for sublimation as a way of accelerating the drying rate. In addition, it also investigates the effect of internal cooling combined with vacuum cooling in the pressure reduction process. Jelly fish tentacles were used as the specimen, with different configurations for condenser heat waste and internal cooling valve opening. The results show that heating with condenser heat waste can accelerate the drying rate up to 0.0035 kg/m2.s. In addition, pre-freezing …

A New Experimental Approach To Evaluate Plasma-Induced Damage In Microcantilever, Yuki Nishimori, Shinji Ueki, Masakazu Sugiyama, Seiji Samukawa, Gen Hashiguchi

Makara Journal of Technology

Plasma etching, during micro-fabrication processing is indispensable for fabricating MEMS structures. During the plasma processes, two major matters, charged ions and vacuum–ultraviolet (VUV) irradiation damage, take charge of reliability degradation. The charged ions induce unwanted sidewall etching, generally called as “notching”, which causes degradation in brittle strength. Furthermore, the VUV irradiation gives rise to crystal defects on the etching surface. To overcome the problem, neutral beam etching (NBE), which use neutral particles without the VUV irradiation, has been developed. In order to evaluate the effect of the NBE quantitatively, we measured the resonance property of a micro-cantilever before and after …

Fatigue Life Prediction Of The Keel Structure Of A Tsunami Buoy Using Spectral Fatigue Analysis Method, Angga Yustiawan, Ketut Suastika, Wibowo Harso Nugroho

Makara Journal of Technology

One of the components of the Indonesia Tsunami Early Warning System (InaTEWS) is a surface buoy. The surface buoy is exposed to dynamic and random loadings while operating at sea, particularly due to waves. Because of the cyclic nature of the wave load, this may result in a fatigue damage of the keel structure, which connects the mooring line with the buoy hull. The operating location of the buoy is off the Java South Coast at the coordinate (10.3998 S, 108.3417 E). To determine the stress transfer function, model tests were performed, measuring the buoy motions and the stress at …

Makara Journal of Technology

Chlor-alkali is one of the most important processes in the chemical industry. It produces chlorine and caustic soda, which become the main feedstock of daily products. The aim of this study is to report the phenomenon of plasma electrolysis and how it can be used in chlor-alkali production for more efficient energy consumption. When the plasma is formed, the current fluctuates and gradually declines. Plasma electrolysis begins with the process of electrolysis itself. Due to Joule heating, gas bubbles are formed and a sheath is made on both electrodes, resulting in the plasma field. Plasma electrolysis can be identified by …

Observation Of Photovoltaic Effect And Single-Photon Detection In Nanowire Silicon Pn-Junction, Arief Udhiarto, Sri Purwiyanti, Daniel Moraru, Takeshi Mizuno, Michiharu Tabe

Makara Journal of Technology

We study nanowire silicon pin and pn-junctions at room and low temperature. Photovoltaic effects are observed for both devices at room temperature. At low temperature, nanowire pn-junction devices show their ability to detect single photon. This ability was not been observed for pin devices. Phosphorus-boron dopant cluster in the depletion region is considered to have the main role for single-photon detection capability. Fundamental mechanism of dopant-based single-photon detection in nanowire pn-junction is described in details.

Makara Journal of Technology

Aligned Rutile TiO2 nanorods (r-TNRs) and TiO2 nanoflowers (r-TNFs) were successfully prepared by hydrothermal method. Using hydrochloric acid (HCl) as chelating agent and titanium butoxide (TBOT) as precursor, aligned r-TNRs with r-TNFs were successfully growth onto fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) with different morphologies. The influences of surface morphologies to the rutile based Dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC) efficiency are discussed. The highest lightto- electric energy conversion efficiency, 1.80% is achieved using different concentration under simulated solar light illumination of 100 mWcm-2 (1.5 AM).
