The traditional lead-acid batteries are mainly used for automobile and various internal combustion engine starting, wireless communication base stations and renewable energy storage; however, their negative plates are easily sulfated under partial-state-of-charge duty, then their charging capacity and cycle life are greatly reduced. Lead-carbon battery is a new type of lead-acid battery, in which a carbon material with high specific surface area and conductivity is added into a negative plate, and has excellent rate discharge performance and higher PSoC cycle life. Lead-carbon battery has a good application prospect in energy storage and hybrid electric vehicle, so these years the study …

Journal of Electrochemistry
The combination technology of brush pyrolysis and electroplating was employed in the preparation of β-PbO2/Sb-SnO2/Ti electrode. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) results showed that the Sb-SnO2 as an interlayer would restrain the formation of lead fluoride and the crystallization degree on the electrode surface could be as high as 100%. The grain size was calculated by Scherrer formula to be 25.2 nm and the agglomeration of lead dioxide was effectively eliminated. The potential span of diffusion control phase, oxygen evolution potential, Tafel slope for the β-PbO2/Sb-SnO2/Ti electrode during …

Boosting Electrocatalytic Activity Of Nitrogen-Doped Graphene/Carbon Nanotube Composite For Oxygen Reduction Reaction, Yu Zhang, Jin-Song Hu, Wen-Jie Jiang, Lin Guo, Zi-Dong Wei, Li-Jun Wan
Journal of Electrochemistry
Developing low-cost catalysts with high electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has recently attracted much attention because the sluggish ORR currently limits the performance and commercialization of fuel cells and metal-air batteries as well. Nitrogen doped carbon materials have been considered as a promising candidate for the replacement of high-cost and scarce Pt-based catalysts although their electrocatalytic activity still needs to be much improved. In this work, an improved nitrogen-doped graphene/carbon nanotubes composite (N-rGO/CNT) was developed as an efficient ORR electrocatalyst. It was found that the ORR activity of N-rGO/CNT composite could be significantly enhanced by introducing iron in …

Electrochemical Deposition Of Copt Alloy Thin Film And Its Abnormal Infrared Effects, Qing-Song Chen, Guo-Cong Guo, Shi-Gang Sun
Journal of Electrochemistry
Nanostructured CoPt alloy thin film was deposited on glassy carbon substrate (denoted as CoPt/GC) under cyclic voltammetric conditions. SEM studies demonstrated that the CoPt/GC was composed of nonuniform nanoparticles with an average size of 139 nm. The composition of the CoPt/GC was analyzed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), which depicts a Co:Pt ratio of ca. 3:5. In situ FTIR spectroscopy employing CO adsorption as a probe reaction revealed that the CoPt/GC exhibits abnormal infrared effects (AIREs). The unique anomalous IR features of CO adsorbed (COad) on CoPt/GC consist in the complete inversion of the COad IR …

Recent Progress In Heteroatoms Doped Carbon Materials As A Catalyst For Oxygen Reduction Reaction, Wei Ding, Xue Zhang, Li Li, Zi-Dong Wei
Journal of Electrochemistry
Developing catalytic materials for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) with high performance and low cost has been one of the major challenges for large-scale applications of fuel cells. In this review, we summarize the recent progress in the heteroatoms doped carbon materials as a catalyst for the catalysis of ORR, with an emphasis on the universal origin of their catalytic mechanisms. The future prospects of the metal-free catalyst were to find precisely controlled doping methods, to explore the role of heteroatoms in the catalysis, and to generate more active catalysts with suitable nanostructure.

Graphene oxide (GO) was prepared by modified Hummers method. Using the GO solution as "ink", Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) and GO were transferred to the surface of ITO substrate modified with (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES/ITO) in a sequence. The transferred AuNPs and GO could form a uniform and dense composite pattern which was characterized by FE-SEM and AFM. Moreover, using the APTES/ITO substrate surface potential as zero, the sequences of the surface potential were APTES>GO>Au.

On The Origin Of The Errors Of IK As Estimated From K-L Equation In Rotating Disk Electrode System, Wei Chen, Ling-Wen Liao, Zheng-Da He, Yan-Xia Chen
Journal of Electrochemistry
Rotating disk electrode system is mainly used to study the kinetics of reactions whose reactants have very low solubility in the electrolyte. For an irreversible reaction, Koutecky-Levich equation (K-L Eq.) is frequently used to deduce the kinetic current ik). Since K-L Eq. is derived based on the assumption that a system should conform the steady-state diffusion conditions, the data recoded from the actual system which deviates from such a condition, great error may be induced for the ik estimated. In this work, polarization curves for oxygen reduction reaction at polycrystalline Pt electrode recorded in solutions with various …

Improving Airplane Touchdown Control By Utilizing The Adverse Elevator Effect, Nihad E. Daidzic Ph.D., Sc.D.
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
The main objective of this original research article is to understand the short-term dynamic behavior of the transport-category airplane during landing flare elevator control application. Increasing the pitch angle to arrest the sink rate, the elevator will have to produce negative lift to rotate the airplane’s nose upward. This has an immediate adverse effect of initially accelerating airplane downward. A mathematical model of landing flare based on the flat-Earth longitudinal dynamics of rigid airplane was developed which is realistic only on very short time-scales as pitch stiffness and damping were neglected. Pilot control scenarios using impulse and step elevator pull-up …

Nonlinear Wave Evolution Above Rectangular Submerged Structures, Jaw-Fang Lee, Lih-Fu Tu, Cheng-Chi Liu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology
In this study, an analytic approach for the complete second-order solution proposed by Sulisz and Hudspeth [13] was applied to solve a problem of waves propagating over a rectangular submerged structure. In addition, nonlinear wave evolutions above the submerged structure were studied. The nonlinear problem was expressed up to the second-order boundary value problems by using a Taylor series expansion and the perturbation method. In solving the problem, the nonhomogeneous problem was divided into Stokes wave and free wave counterparts. The solutions of neighboring regions were combined and solved by applying kinematic and dynamic matching conditions. Convergence of the presented …

Analytical Solution For Long-Wave Scattering By A Submerged Cylinder In An Axi-Symmetrical Pit, Huan-Wen Liu, Xiao-Ling Sun
Journal of Marine Science and Technology
This paper proposes an analytical solution to the long-wave equation for waves propagating over a submerged cylinder located in a pit. The pit was assumed to be axi-symmetrical and convex or concave in shape, which may represent a submerged sill being scoured at its toe. Techniques of variable separation and Taylor series expansion were applied to find the analytical solution. It is found that Longuet-Higgins’ classical analytical solutions for waves scattered by a submerged circular sill and by a submerged circular pit are actually special cases of the present analytical solution. By using this analytical solution, the influence of the …

Analysis Of Rolled Piece Deformation In Straightening Process Using Fm-Bem, Hai-Lian Gui, Qiang Li, Yao Li, Pu Li, Qing-Xue Huang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology
Rolled piece deformation in a straightening process is regarded as an inverse problem of the plate bending problem. The straightening force was obtained accurately by applying the fast multipole boundary element method (FM-BEM) to the plate bending problem. Furthermore, the straightening process of a nine-roller straightening roller system with a variable roller distance was simulated using numerical analysis, and a function describing the neutral layer offset was obtained from an analysis of FM-BEM results. In this paper, the principle stress values and neutral layer offset of the microunits in the tension and compression regions are discussed. It is concluded that …

Simple Integral Fuzzy Control For Converters With Highly Nonlinear Dynamics, Kuang-Yow Lian, Chi-Wang Hong
Journal of Marine Science and Technology
A simple integral Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy control scheme suitable for many types of converters is proposed in this paper. A converter with highly nonlinear characteristics, called active high power factor correction (AHPFC), is taken as an example to show the control scheme. Indeed, we can derive a linear controller to achieve zero output regulation error for the AHPFC converter. First, we include an integral error signal to form an augmented system. After translating the coordinate to the regulated point, we obtain the stabilization model. The model-based fuzzy approach is then used to handle the nonlinear system. The system stability is …

Comparing with the hydrodynamic Newtonian case, the squeeze film characteristics for curved circular plates are improved by the use of an electrically conducting non-Newtonian fluid in the presence of external magnetic fields. Numerical values of the load capacity and the approaching time are provided …
An Application Of Space Syntax To Critical Working Space Analysis: The Case Of Building Construction, Li-Wen Wu, Sy-Jye Guo
An Application Of Space Syntax To Critical Working Space Analysis: The Case Of Building Construction, Li-Wen Wu, Sy-Jye Guo
Journal of Marine Science and Technology
The definition of critical space used in this paper is identical to the critical path definition employed in the critical path method (CPM). This definition implies that there is no extra floating space; thus, any conflict is expected to result in productivity loss. Space syntax is a theory developed to reveal the hidden interrelationships between spaces using architectural diagrams. Existing studies have indicated the potential for space syntax to identify critical spaces and to assist in reducing conflicts leading to productivity loss. However, there is not yet quantitative evidence demonstrating whether the quantitative parameters of relative convenience and relative control …
A Residual-Norm Based Algorithm For Solving Determinate/Indeterminate Systems Of Non-Linear Algebraic Equations, Yung-Wei Chen
A Residual-Norm Based Algorithm For Solving Determinate/Indeterminate Systems Of Non-Linear Algebraic Equations, Yung-Wei Chen
Journal of Marine Science and Technology
In this paper, a residual-norm based algorithm (RNBA) is applied to solve determinate/indeterminate systems of nonlinear algebraic equations. The RNBA is derived from a manifold and defined in terms of a squared residual norm and a fictitious time variable, from which a robust iterative algorithm with either fixing or adjusting parameters can be obtained. Besides, some convergent indexes, such as manifold factor A0 and ratio of residual errors S, are defined to indicate the manifold attracting effect. Through the convergent indexes, the convergent mechanism of the RNBA displays a Hopf bifurcation when approximating the true solutions. Several numerical examples, including …
