Numerical Simulation Of Deep Excavation In Gravel Layers, Chien-Yi Wu, Shuh-Gi Chern
Numerical Simulation Of Deep Excavation In Gravel Layers, Chien-Yi Wu, Shuh-Gi Chern
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This study analyzed gravel excavation cases in the Xindian District of Taiwan. Instead of the parameters typically employed in deep excavation analysis we used the deformations of diaphragm walls in a back analysis to achieve recommendations regarding the ideal range of the soil elastic modulus Es in the analysis parameters of numerical simulations for the Xindian District stratum or similar strata. We used Plaxis 2D software to analyze the gravel layer. The results indicated that, when the fifth layer of gravel was set to N = 100 and the range of the soil elastic modulus Es was set between 7.84N …
Velocity-Based Egress Model For The Analysis Of Evacuation Process On Passenger Ships, Yoon-Ok Cho, Sol Ha, Kwang-Phil Park
Velocity-Based Egress Model For The Analysis Of Evacuation Process On Passenger Ships, Yoon-Ok Cho, Sol Ha, Kwang-Phil Park
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This study presents a velocity-based egress model, which takes into account different aspects of human behavior in an emergency situation, for the evacuation analysis on passenger ships. It was supposed that the egress model consists of three behaviors: individual, crowd, and emergency behavior. The individual behavior was represented by the body shape, walking speed, walking direction, and rotation of each passenger. The basic walking direction of each passenger was obtained as a solution to the shortest distance route to a destination using a visibility graph. The crowd behavior of the passengers was composed of two components: one is a flock …

Numerical Simulation Study Of Hydrodynamic Impact Of Sea-Crossing Bridge, Xiao-Feng Guo, Chu-Han Chen, Jun-Jian Tang, Zhou-Hua Guo
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper used the Sea-Crossing Bridge in Quanzhou Bay as an example to simulate its tidal flow field after construction by a semi-implicit Lagrangian-Eulerian finite difference method. Triangle or quadrilateral meshes were used to refine a mesh for the sea area close to the bridge in the model. Each bridge pier was treated as land. The minimum side length of the mesh was approximately 5 meters. The simulation results showed that slow flow areas were formed in front of bridge piers due to the influence of rising and falling tides; at the back of bridge piers, slow flow areas were …
On Wave Interaction With Floating Structures With Dragged Moorings, Po-I Chen, Cheng-Tsung Chen, Jaw-Fang Lee
On Wave Interaction With Floating Structures With Dragged Moorings, Po-I Chen, Cheng-Tsung Chen, Jaw-Fang Lee
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This study developed an analytical solution in the frequency domain that considers the interactions among waves, floating structures, and mooring lines. The proposed solution was applied to investigate a problem involving a moored floating structure subjected to incident waves. The floating structure was considered as moving with three degrees of freedom, namely surge, heave, and roll. The mooring lines were simplified as springs, and the springs were assumed to be subjected to a Morison-type wave force. In the proposed solution, the wave field is first expressed as a problem involving a superposition of scattering and radiation waves. The wave field …

Outsourcing Decisions In Single Machine Scheduling Problem With Multiple External Facilities, Jung Man Hong, Jong Hyup Lee
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper considers outsourcing decisions in a scheduling problem. The objective of the problem is to minimize the outsourcing costs under the constraints of the capacity of outsourcing facilities and due date of each job. The problem is composed of three kinds of decisions. The first decision is the selection of jobs to be processed in-house, the second is to schedule the in-house processing jobs with due date constraints, and the last is to select an outsourcing provider for each outsourced job where the outsourcing provider has a capacity constraint. Some optimality conditions and solution properties for the problem are …

An Exploratory Study: Correlations Between Occupational Stressors, Coping Mechanisms, And Job Performance Among Chinese Aviation Maintenance Technicians, Yu Wang, Julius C. Keller, Chenyu Huang, Richard O. Fanjoy
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
Aviation maintenance technicians play a vital role in air transportation. These workers are responsible for keeping aircraft airworthy and executing safety responsibilities. Undesirable stress levels may have a negative impact on work performance (Mowday, Porter, & Steers, 2013). Poor work performance may manifest in safety violations, absenteeism, turnover, and disengagement. These outcomes may disrupt an organization’s operation and negatively impact the financial bottom line. This mixed-methods exploratory research study was aimed at examining the relationships between occupational stress, coping mechanisms, and job performance. Research questionnaires were electronically distributed to frontline aviation maintenance technicians at multiple airlines in China. Eighty-two ( …
Judging Airline Pilots’ Performance With And Without An Assessment Model: A Comparison Study Of The Scoring Of Raters From Two Different Airlines, David Weber
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
Various models have been suggested to assess the performance of airline pilots. However, the influence of a model on assessors’ scoring remains largely unexplored. The aim of the present study was to contrast the assessments of raters from two airlines, who assessed performance in pairs of the same airline and rank by using or not using an assessment model. The results showed differences between the assessors of the two airlines in terms of their scoring. Implications were drawn in regards to the usage of a model and its influence on pilot performance assessment.
The Tornado That Struck Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University On Christmas Day, 2006: Lessons Learned From A Near-Miss, John M. Lanicci
The Tornado That Struck Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University On Christmas Day, 2006: Lessons Learned From A Near-Miss, John M. Lanicci
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
An F2 tornado that touched down in Daytona Beach on Christmas Day afternoon caused over $50 million of damage to the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University campus and nearby neighborhoods. The tornado was part of a severe-weather outbreak over Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina that began during the overnight hours of 25 December 2006. Examination of surface and upper-level meteorological charts and vertical soundings on the morning of 25 December showed stability and wind-shear conditions favorable for tornadic thunderstorms over this region. The evolution of the squall line that moved through east-central Florida, and the parent thunderstorm that produced the tornado was …

Participants indicated the challenges and benefits of implementing these performance expectations and indicated personal experiences that helped them to interpret the performance expectations.
Quality of lessons differed depending on the performance expectation …
Quantitative Risk Evaluation Of Obstacle Limitation Surfaces For Final Approaches At Airports, Amila Silva, Alexandre G. De Barros
Quantitative Risk Evaluation Of Obstacle Limitation Surfaces For Final Approaches At Airports, Amila Silva, Alexandre G. De Barros
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
Obstacle limitation surfaces (OLS) are the main safeguard against objects that can pose a hazard to aircraft operations at and around airports. The standard dimensions of the most of those surfaces were estimated using the pilot’s experience at the time when they were included in the standard documents. As a result, some of these standards may have been overestimated, while others may not provide an adequate level of safety. With airports moving to the Safety Management System (SMS) approach to design and operations safety, proper evaluation of the level of safety provided by OLS at specific sites becomes important to …
Estimation Of Performance Airspeeds For High-Bypass Turbofans Equipped Transport-Category Airplanes, Nihad E. Daidzic
Estimation Of Performance Airspeeds For High-Bypass Turbofans Equipped Transport-Category Airplanes, Nihad E. Daidzic
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
Conventional Mach-independent subsonic drag polar does not replicate the real airplane drag characteristics exactly and especially not in the drag-divergence region due to shock-induced transonic wave drag. High-bypass turbofan thrust is a complicated function of many parameters that eludes accurate predictions for the entire operating envelope and must be experimentally verified. Fuel laws are also complicated functions of many parameters which make optimization and economic analysis difficult and uncertain in the conceptual design phase. Nevertheless, mathematical models and predictions have its important place in aircraft development, design, and optimization. In this work, airspeed-dependent turbofan thrust and the new fuel-law model …

Valorization Of Waste Sludge, S. Shrihari
Valorization Of Waste Sludge, S. Shrihari
Manipal Journal of Science and Technology
The amount of sludge produced in wastewater treatment plants is enormous. This sludge contains undesirable metals and other contaminants, and its disposal is expensive. Several attempts are being made towards valorization of this sludge, by using it in building and construction materials, reuse as adsorbent in water and wastewater treatment, as a coagulant and recovery of metals. This paper looks into some of the attempts at valorization of sludge.

Gpu-Based Image Reconstruction For Real Time X-Ray Fluoroscopy With A Regular Detector Grid, Cholayya Niranjan
Manipal Journal of Science and Technology
This paper describes a strategy to parallelize and implement in real-time the multi-plane tomosynthetic image reconstruction algorithm used in common x-ray fluoroscopy systems such as the Scanning Beam Digital X-Ray (SBDX) system, on high performance computing platforms such as general purpose Graphical Processing Units (GPU). The authors contrast two different parallelizing schemata, namely, the detector centric and the pixel centric parallelization approaches under the specific assumption of a regular detector grid and separability of the x and y dimensions. In both of these schemes, the use of look-up tables (LUT) helps to reduce run time computations but requires effective memory …

This study investigated how personal and operational factors (travel distance and streetscape) influence traveler mode choice decisions for the last-mile home-bound trip stage from rail transit stations. Personal factors include the socio-demography of travelers, and attributes of the streetscape include the built environment (degree of areal development), prevalence of cycling, availability of short-range transport modes, and walking/cycling infrastructure. Interviewers randomly intercepted pedestrians to administer a mode choice survey at five rail transit station exits and engaged all available cyclists at bicycle parking areas in the vicinity of stations in Singapore. A multimodal logit regression model revealed a significant relationship between …

Commuting By Customized Bus: A Comparative Analysis With Private Car And Conventional Public Transport In Two Cities, Tao Liu, Avishai Ceder, Romain Bologna, Benjamin Cabantous
Journal of Public Transportation
Commuting is a major component in the creation of traffic and travel problems. Thus, more attention should be given to its practice. Private car (PC) transport, the dominant mode of commuting in most of the world’s major cities, creates traffic-related social problems such as traffic congestion, traffic fatalities and injuries, and adverse environmental impacts. This study proposes a novel commuting travel mode—a customized bus (CB) transit system that provides advanced, personalized, and flexible demand-interactive minibus service using Internet, telephone, and smartphone apps. The aim was to assess and compare the performance of CB with PC and with conventional public transport …

The concept of a dynamic and flexible Intelligent Subscription Bus Service (I-Service) was developed, and two integrated questionnaires were conducted among the commuters of a large university campus. To determine travel times to the campus by I-Service, a digital urban road network map with travel time databases was produced, and software was developed to calculate optimum routes using these databases. Travel times for each participant were determined by the shortest travel time principle. The proposed hypothetical service was introduced to participants, and anticipated advantages for each participant were reported back to them by means of a second questionnaire to determine …
Factors Influencing Demand For Buses Powered By Alternative Energy Sources, Janer Galván, Victor Cantillo, Julian Arellana
Factors Influencing Demand For Buses Powered By Alternative Energy Sources, Janer Galván, Victor Cantillo, Julian Arellana

Transit buses consume high amounts of fossil fuels, with the consequent release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. In recent decades, much effort has been concentrated on the development of cleaner fuels to mitigate this externality. However, market shares for cleaner-fueled buses are still modest, which is why it is relevant to evaluate the aspects influencing their acceptance. This article presents an econometric model to evaluate factors influencing demand for transit buses in Colombia powered by cleaner fuels. For this purpose, a stated preference survey was applied to public transportation entrepreneurs. Results suggest that the target population considers acquisition cost …

This paper evaluates the quality of service of the metropolitan Metro of Seville (Spain) across different user profiles, as determined through cluster analysis. Service quality evaluation is performed using a composite index that combines the user point of view with the service operator point of view. The combination of these two types of service quality measurement fulfils the need to provide a reliable measurement tool for transit performance. Six user profiles were identified, and it was ascertained that they have different opinions about the service, with heterogeneous gaps between the points of view among the six user profiles.

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems are considered to be the most effective alternative for solving urban transportation problems for both developed and developing countries. The conventional approach to estimate dwell time (DT) is based on traditional DT models derived for normal bus stops, but not for modern BRT stations. BRT stations are different from bus stops in terms of length of platform, multiple loading areas, and number of passengers handled. Therefore, understanding dwell time dynamics, including the recently-introduced component of Bus Lost Time (BLT), is important to improve the operations of BRT systems. This research introduces various possible scenarios of …

Electrical And Thermal Transport Properties Of Ge Substituted Fesi Kondo Insulator, Y K Kuo
Manipal Journal of Science and Technology
The effects of Ge partial substitution on the Si site of FeSi Kondo insulator (KI) were investigated by means of electrical and thermal transport measurements. Electrical resistivity (ρ), Seebeck coefficient (S), and thermal conductivity (k) measurements were performed on a series of FeSi1-xGex alloys with x varying from 0.00 to 0.25. It is found that the substitution of Ge onto the Si sites causes a substantial decrease in the electrical resistivity and Seebeck coefficient at low temperatures, attributed to the shift of Fermi energy from the dip of the density of states as a consequence …

Fast And Accurate Indexing Technique For Large Multi-Biometric Data Sets, Debasis Samanta
Manipal Journal of Science and Technology
Biometric-based person identification is gaining importance and now-a-days it is required to process a large amount of biometric data in the order of millions. Therefore, the traditional approach where the identity of a query template is decided by matching the query template with all stored templates is impractical. The problem is further compounded when we have to deal with two or more biometric traits. In this paper, we propose an approach to index a large pool of multi-biometric data so that the matching process can be accomplished in a real time without compromise in accuracy of person identification. Our proposed …
