Material Order: A Discovery Group And Shared Catalogue For Materials Collections, Mark Pompelia, Margot Mcilwain Nishimura
Faculty & Librarian Work
Material Order is an academic consortium of material sample collections for art, architecture, and design disciplines. Founded by the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University and Fleet Library at Rhode Island School of Design and since comprising several more institutions in the US, it provides a community-based approach to management and open access utilizing and developing standards and best practices. Now in its twelfth year and reaching a level of maturation, Material Order offers research and pedagogical value to current and potential members and the larger design communities.

Characterizing Nonlinear Fluid Flow In 3d Printed Rock Fractures: Effects Of Roughness, Aperture, And Intersection Angles, Ghoulem Ifrene, Prasad Pothana, Sven Egenhoff, Nicholas Bittner, Kuldeep Singh
Petroleum Engineering Posters and Presentations
Understanding fluid flow behavior at fracture intersections is vital to geothermal energy extraction, underground water flow, and CO2 storage. Here, laboratory experiments were performed to study the effect of surface roughness, intersection angles, and aperture on nonlinear flow behavior in simple fracture networks. A FormLabs (3B+) 3D printer was used to fabricate 8 samples of 38.1mm in diameter and 59.43mm or 54.9mm in length with 2 intersecting fractures of 10o and 40o respectively. The surface roughness of the fractures was based on laser profilometry measurements from two induced mode 1 rock fractures, with a joint roughness coefficient …

Applying A Named Entity Recognition Model To Chemical Patents, Wanxiang Chen, Zachery Nolan, Christina Tang, Bridget T. Mcinnes
Summer REU Program
Named Entity Recognition (NER) is an application of Natural Language Processing (NLP) that involves recording entities contained in a text excerpt and classifying them into predefined category types. Unstructured text, or text without a predefined format is converted into structured text that can serve as input to an NER model. Here, we use a pretrained NER model to extract and classify chemical entities from patents/ This streamlines the process of determining the number and types of chemical agents used in a specific patent. This information may be useful for researchers, pharmaceutical companies, and agencies such as the FDA.
How Can Personalised Feedback In Assignments Help Address Gender Balance In Computing Education?, Alina Berry
How Can Personalised Feedback In Assignments Help Address Gender Balance In Computing Education?, Alina Berry
Academic Posters Collection
Personalised feedback is frequently used in computing assessments in higher education. Research has shown that personalised feedback positively influences persistence in computer science. Computing and related disciplines are known to show relatively low retention rates. This includes female students, who are strongly underrepresented in computing disciplines, so they can be considered as a particularly important group for retention-driven initiatives. Female science students are more likely to act upon feedback, and personalised feedback has increased intentions to persist among female top performing students in computing. Hence, providing personalised feedback can be considered as a promising gender initiative that has a potential …

Personalised Feedback On Assessments In Computing Modules - Gender Equality Action In Context, Alina Berry
Academic Posters Collection
Personalised feedback in computing higher education has been known to positively influence retention of women. The issue of gender inequality in computing field is well known and one of the efforts to address it is the development of a gender equality toolkit (TechMate), with one initiative (action) in the toolkit being personalised feedback. While all actions in the toolkit are research-driven, the aim of this work was to evaluate the action on personalised feedback in a local context.
The study comprised of 10 semi-structured interviews with computing lecturers at TU Dublin who provide personalised feedback, a student survey with 68 …

Research Trends And Impact Report On Aggregation-Induced Emission (Aie), 2001-2021, Elsevier Analytical Services
Public Reports
Since the concept of AIE was first proposed in China in 2001, it has gradually grown to a field of science that attracts dedicated researchers from around the world. Elsevier's data analytics team used AIE experts' interpretation of current theoretical, technological, and industrial development trends in the field for reference to collect AIE-related global scientific publications (from the Scopus database) to serve as a publication set in the field of AIE. This was undertaken to present, accurately and objectively, the development of AIE research over the past two decades and the latest scientific advancements in the field; to facilitate the …

Thought Quantification With A Single-Channel Eeg Bci System, Michael Angelo De La Cruz Ortiz
Undergraduate Research Posters 2024
BCI (Brain-Computer Interfaces) implement various aspects of brain activity monitoring and analysis technologies. EEG (electroencephalogram) has proven to be a viable way to safely probe electromagnetic brain activity through non-surgical means. However, these devices are not viable for everyday consumer use, specifically amongst people with disabilities. This project aims to develop a means of processing data to optimize the use of a single-channel EEG. For this purpose, the output of a mind flex headset by Mattel was processed to quantify six different thought commands (up, down, left, right, forward, backward) from one subject. The data was analyzed via a computational …

The adoption of microservices architecture has experienced significant growth, driven by its appeal in terms of modularity, scalability, and deployment ease. However, this proliferation of microservices has intensified the demand for efficient data exchange among them. While REST API has long been the standard protocol for microservices communication, its limitations in flexibility and performance have spurred the ascent of GraphQL as a more efficient alternative, as highlighted by studies comparing their performance. As the number of microservices continues to rise, traditional methods like REST APIs prove challenging, leading to issues such as over-fetching or under-fetching of data. GraphQL addresses these …

With the growing demand for transparent Al systems, the EU's Al Act emphasizes the need for accessible explanations to foster user trust and ethical Al use [1]. Our research explores the "gulf of explanation" in XAl, evaluating how well current systems align with users' mental models and engaging experts to improve human-centred XAl design [2]. This work particularly considers the application of a new and novel HCl framework, a set of 12 key design principles for human-centred XAI.

A Systematic Study Of Freezing Behavior In Earthworms In Response To Auditory And Vibratory Stimuli, Navjot Singh, A. Burton, Dragana Ivkovich Claflin
Celebration of Undergraduate & Graduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities Materials
This study examined the parameters needed to reliably induce a freezing fear response to a predator-like auditory stimulus in the earthworm species Eisenia Fetida. Previous work from our lab found that a grunting noise was more reliable in causing freezing compared to a mole sound, i.e. artificial versus natural predators of E. Fetida (Worthen et al., 2024). In the present study, 8 amplitude levels of grunting sound were presented in either serial or random order. The speaker location was varied so that it either did or did not touch the apparatus, thus producing a mechanical vibration in addition to the …
