Currently, portable x-ray examinations do not employ automatic exposure control (AEC). To aid in the design of a size-specific technique chart, acrylic slabs of various thicknesses are often used to estimate x-ray transmission factors for patients of various body thicknesses. This approach, while simple, does not account for patient anatomy, tissue heterogeneity, and the attenuation properties of the human body. To better account for these factors, in this work, we determined x-ray transmission factors using computational patient models that are anatomically realistic. A high-throughput cell printing technology has developed to simulate the liver tissue environment using a hydrogel-based chip platform that has potential to shift in vivo drug toxicity models towards in vitro tests. However, the hydrophobic nature of polystyrene chips is not promoting direct adhesion of hydrogels, which created a problem with spot attachment. The main goal of this research is to create a surface chemistry that helps to attach a peptide-based hydrogel, including PuraMatrix, to a polystyrenebased micropillar chip. Polymer surfactants developed in our lab have a protein headgroup (foldon) and three elastin-like polypeptide (ELP) tails. They can form micelles smaller than 30 nm, which may be useful in developing targeted drug delivery vehicles. Specifically, ELPs are capped with foldon, which is a 27 amino acid sequence that folds as a homotrimer, resulting in a three-armed star polypeptide. This structure has been shown to form micelles above the transition temperature (Tt) of the ELP. The salt concentration affects the interaction between the headgroups affecting how the micelles assemble. At low salt concentrations the ELP-foldon will form spherical micelles; whereas, …

The USU Power Electronics Lab (UPEL) hosted the Department of Energy (DOE) Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E) quarter V program review of AMPED project on April 25th, 2014. In attendance were ARPA-E program managers and reviewers and program team members from University of Colorado at Boulder and Colorado Springs, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Ford Motor Company and Utah State University. The review meeting included a laboratory demonstration of all program hardware and a general UPEL lab tour with student presentations.

Background

Tungsten carbide is useful because of its hardness and strength. Joining of dissimilar materials especially non-metallic materials is very challenging. Active metals such as titanium can be added to a ductile filler metals such as copper to get wetting via a reduction reaction.

Conclusions

All alloy conditions wet the tungsten carbide/cobalt substrates. Two different interfacial reaction types were observed: dissolution and reduction reactions. An important issue has been identified: the braze interface reactions change the chemistry of the braze alloy which change the interaction between the braze alloy and the other material substrate.

The USU Board of Trustees approved plans to begin construction on a 4,800 square foot facility at 650 E. Grand Ave. This facility will be used to enable research in Wireless Power Transfer technology for electric vehicles. The building will also feature at track to test charging with vehicles in-motion and a high-bay area for research in Wireless Power Transfer.

UPEL Student, Warren Chen, published a paper at COMPEL this year, the annual conference for Control and Modeling for Power Electronics. The paper, titled "Isolated bidirectional DC/AC and AC/DC three-phase power conversion using series resonant converter modules and a three-phase unfolder", highlights recent research with a Dual Active-Bridge Resonant Power converter. The converter, paired with a three-phase unfolder is able to achieve low AC THD without the need for a bulky LC filter, instead using the large bandwidth of the converter.

Clarence "Cap" Cornish was an Indiana pilot whose life spanned all but five years of the Century of Flight. Born in Canada in 1898, Cornish grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He began flying at the age of nineteen, piloting a "Jenny" aircraft during World War I, and continued to fly for the next seventy-eight years. In 1995, at the age of ninety-seven, he was recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest actively flying pilot. Students in the Electric Vehicle Lab course (ECE 6930) competed in the first annual Electric Bike Race. The students designed and built the bikes as a part of the course, and then had a race at the end of the year to see whose bike was the fastest. The Electric Vehicle Lab is the final course in a sequence of courses on Power Electronics at USU.

This elaborate palanquin, or onna norimono (“ride for a woman”), transported a bride of high social standing to the groom’s residence on their wedding day. The exterior is constructed in wood and embellished with black lacquer, gold paint, and metal fittings. Two repeated crests serve as decoration and signify that the groom descended from Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543–1616), the first military ruler, or shogun, of the Edo Period. There were three Ohio research efforts about Student Growth Measures (SGM) for Teacher and Principal Evaluations: 1) extended testing for previously non-­‐tested subjects and grades, 2) relationship between the teacher and principal evaluation systems’ implementation plans, and 3) an empirical study of Local Education Agencies’ (LEA) year-­‐end evaluation data from 2013. In 2011-­‐2012 Ohio offered a 2 year mini-­‐grant to LEAs agreeing to administer extended testing for Value-­‐Added measures (VAM) in grades and content areas not represented in the Ohio Achievement Assessment (OAA). The mini-­‐grant allowed the state to create testing pools sufficient to produce teacher-­‐level VAMs. American College Testing …
