We are excited to launch The Investigator, a new magazine which will be produced annually by the Office of Research at Kennesaw State University. You will find stories that span the spectrum and which impact the community through the research, service and creative activities conducted by KSU faculty, staff and students.

One feature describes how Jonathan McMurry and John Salerno partnered to create KSU’s first incubator company, New Echota Biotechnology. Researchers at Utah State University are improving the ways we model muscle loss during spaceflight. Using a rotating cell culture device that simulates microgravity, a team of biological engineers tested various materials and methods to develop a protocol that mimics the physical changes seen in atrophying muscle.

A major project is underway to develop a shared platform for data and analytics in a highly federated healthcare delivery organization. In the status quo data environment, analysts have integrated information from various domains — medical records, claims, membership — to produce a multitude of reports and analysis. Duplicative, mis-aligned, and siloed datasets were created as an unintended consequence.

One objective of the project is to produce outcomes (reports, analysis) that are more standardized and efficient than the status quo without sacrificing adaptability. Standards and practices are being intentionally developed as a mechanism for this emerging system to achieve more …

The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) recognized the need for collection, summary, and evaluation of groundwater data as tools in planning optimal use of the groundwater resource. Bulletin 118 presents the results of groundwater basin evaluations in California. The Bulletin 118 series was preceded by Water Quality Investigations Report No. 3, Ground Water Basins in California (referred to in this bulletin as Report No. 3), published in 1952 by the Department of Public Works, Division of Water Resources (the predecessor of DWR). Community, business and legislative leaders got a first-hand review of Utah's air quality challenges from one of the state's foremost experts on air quality research. On Feb. 26, Randy Martin, associate research professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and researcher at the Utah Water Research Laboratory, presented the first Research Landscapes lecture in Salt Lake City. The event took place at the O.C. Tanner Headquarters in front of a standing-room-only crowd.

Aiming For Gold: Improving Reproducibility In Hydrology Studies | College Of Engineering, Utah State University

In six well-regarded hydrology and water resources journals published in 2017, the estimated percentage of studies whose results could be fully reproduced was only between 0.06 and 6.8 percent. This low level of reproducibility is not uncommon in hydrology studies — a fact many scientists readily acknowledge. However, a team of researchers at Utah State University may have found a solution to make these studies more reproducible.
