A Selective Approach To Hexahedral Refinement Of Unstructured Conformal Meshes, Michael Hubbard Parrish
A Selective Approach To Hexahedral Refinement Of Unstructured Conformal Meshes, Michael Hubbard Parrish
Theses and Dissertations
Hexahedral refinement increases the density of an all-hexahedral mesh in a specified region, improving numerical accuracy. Previous research using solely sheet refinement theory made the implementation computationally expensive and unable to effectively handle multiply-connected transition elements and self-intersecting hexahedral sheets. The Selective Approach method is a new procedure that combines two diverse methodologies to create an efficient and robust algorithm able to handle the above stated problems. These two refinement methods are: 1) element by element refinement and 2) directional refinement. In element by element refinement, the three inherent directions of a hexahedron are refined in one step using one …
A Wind And Rain Backscatter Model Derived From Amsr And Seawinds Data, Seth Niels Nielsen
A Wind And Rain Backscatter Model Derived From Amsr And Seawinds Data, Seth Niels Nielsen
Theses and Dissertations
The SeaWinds scatterometers aboard the QuikSCAT and ADEOS II satellites were originally designed to measure wind vectors over the ocean by exploiting the relationship between wind-induced surface roughening and the normalized radar backscatter cross-section. Recently, an algorithm for simultaneously retrieving wind and rain (SWR) from scatterometer measurements was developed that enables SeaWinds to correct rain-corrupted wind measurements and retrieve rain rate data. This algorithm is based on co-locating Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Precipitation Radar (TRMM PR) and SeaWinds on QuikSCAT data. In this thesis, a new wind and rain radar backscatter model is developed for the SWR algorithm using a …
A Geometry-Based Motion Planner For Direct Machining And Control, Robert M. Cheatham
A Geometry-Based Motion Planner For Direct Machining And Control, Robert M. Cheatham
Theses and Dissertations
Direct Machining And Control (DMAC) is a new method of controlling machine tools directly from process planning software. A motion planning module is developed for the DMAC system that operates directly off path geometry without pre-tessellation. The motion planner is developed with the intent to process Bezier curves. The motion planning module includes a deterministic predictor-corrector-type curve interpolator, a dynamics limiting module, and a two-pass jerk-limited speed profiling algorithm. The methods are verified by machining an automotive surface in a clay medium and evaluating the resultant machine dynamics, feed rate, and chordal error throughout the machining process.

Comparing The Feasibility Of Cutting Thin-Walled Sections From Five Commonly Used Metals Utilizing Wire Electric Discharge Machining, Richard C. Stephenson
Theses and Dissertations
Wire Electric Discharge Machining (wire-EDM) is a non-traditional machining process. Controlled electric sparks are successively used to vaporize part of a workpiece along a programmed path in order to machine a desired part. Because there is no tool that comes in direct contact with the workpiece, it is possible to machine thin, delicate parts. This thesis was designed to observe and analyze the differences in cutting capabilities for a conventional wire-EDM machine when cutting thin-walled sections from five commonly used metals utilizing a variation of roughing and finishing passes. The five metals that were used in this study are: Aluminum …

A New Method For Treating Wells In Reservoir Simulation, Gregory M. Gessel
A New Method For Treating Wells In Reservoir Simulation, Gregory M. Gessel
Theses and Dissertations
A new method for formulating finite difference equations for reservoir simulation has been developed. It can be applied throughout the entire simulated reservoir or to local segments. When applied to cells containing vertical, fully penetrating, straight-line wells in a homogeneous reservoir, the resulting equations are equivalent to Peaceman's classical well equations used in most reservoir simulators today. However, when the new finite difference equations are applied to both the well-containing cells, and their neighbors, the accuracy of the simulation improves substantially. The method produces still better accuracy results when applied throughout the reservoir. Unlike the Peaceman correction, the new method …

Structural Optimization Of A Distributed Actuation System In A Flexible In-Plane Morphing Wing, James T. Westfall
Theses and Dissertations
Structural weight and efficiency are hurdles for morphing aircraft being realizable on the full-scale level. The optimal distribution and orientation of actuators throughout an in-plane flexible morphing wing structure is investigated. The drive to minimize structural weight causes a wing to be more flexible and the location and orientation of the actuators become more critical as the structure becomes more flexible. NextGen's N-MAS morphing wing is used as a case study. The wing is modeled as a number of unit cells assembled in a scissor-like structure, each comprised of four linkages pinned together and an actuator. The flexible skin of …
Computationally Efficient Modeling Of Transient Radiation In A Purely Scattering Foam Layer, Rudolph Scott Larson
Computationally Efficient Modeling Of Transient Radiation In A Purely Scattering Foam Layer, Rudolph Scott Larson
Theses and Dissertations
An efficient solution method for evaluating radiative transport in a foam layer is a valuable tool for predicting the properties of the layer. Two different solution methods have been investigated. First, a reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) simulation has been developed. In the RMC simulation photon bundles are traced backwards from a detector to the source where they were emitted. The RMC method takes advantage of time reflection symmetry, allowing the photons to be traced backwards in the same manner they are tracked in a standard forward Monte Carlo scheme. Second, a reduced order model based on the singular value decomposition …
