Understanding The Effect Of Balance Of Plant Contaminants On Pemfcs Performance: Models, Mechanisms, Functional Group, Hyun-Seok Cho Jan 2013

Understanding The Effect Of Balance Of Plant Contaminants On Pemfcs Performance: Models, Mechanisms, Functional Group, Hyun-Seok Cho

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation considers contamination of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMC) that may result from chemicals that leach from balance of plant (BOP) materials. Both model predictions and experimental data are presented. The model is used to predict the cathode contamination impact on the Pt/C electrode and the membrane assuming no transport of contaminant from cathode to anode. The model prediction accounts for the contamination mechanisms such as adsorption, ion-exchange, absorption and three sources of voltage (i.e., performance) loss. The simple 2-D time-dependent model is developed by considering well known chemical engineering concepts of Langmuir adsorption, partition coefficients, plug …

Rational Design Of Perovskite Based Anode Materials For Solid Oxide Fuel Cells: A Computational Approach, Suwit Suthirakun Jan 2013

Rational Design Of Perovskite Based Anode Materials For Solid Oxide Fuel Cells: A Computational Approach, Suwit Suthirakun

Theses and Dissertations

A key challenge in the development of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology is related to finding a suitable replacement for Ni-based cermet anodes. Although conventional Ni-based electrodes exhibit excellent catalytic activity and current collection, they suffer from several limitations such as instability upon redox cycling, nickel sintering, and sulfur and carbon poisoning when exposed to practical hydrocarbon fuels. Therefore, alternative anode materials need to be developed for SOFCs. Among the novel anode electrodes, perovskite based materials are of great interest because they have been shown to satisfy most intrinsic SOFC anode requirements such as high thermodynamic stability in anodic …

Experimental Investigation Of Steady Flows At A Breached Levee, Cyrus K. Riahi-Nezhad

Theses and Dissertations

Steady flow at a breached levee is studied in this dissertation through a generalized model and a case study. The generalized experimental set-up consists of a main channel with an opening in its side wall and an adjustable sluice gate at its downstream end. Water surface elevation and the three-dimensional velocity field are measured by a point gauge and an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV), respectively. Time-averaged measured values of velocity field and free surface elevation are presented. In addition, Froude Number, turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) and bed shear stress are computed from the measured results. Results show that the flow …

Modeling Ultrasonic Field Emanating From Scanning Acoustic Microscope For Reliable Characterization Of Pathogens (Biological Materials), Rowshan Ara Rima Jan 2013

Modeling Ultrasonic Field Emanating From Scanning Acoustic Microscope For Reliable Characterization Of Pathogens (Biological Materials), Rowshan Ara Rima

Theses and Dissertations

Acoustic microscopy provides extraordinary advantages over state-of-the-art invasive imaging techniques to determine the mechanical properties of living colonies of pathogens and micro-organisms. It is possible to obtain the morphomechanical parameters of the pathogenic colonies e.g. variation of thickness, stiffness and the coefficients of attenuation, using scanning acoustic microscope (SAM). However, the process requires an expert with extensive understanding of SAM and ultrasonic signals which is very time consuming and expensive for complex form of analysis. Due to lack of a suitable computational tool, presently the ultrasonic wave scattering, reflection and transmission through the biological specimens cannot be properly visualized. Without …

Biomechanics Of Porcine Renal Artery And The Development Of A Replacment Vessel, Mohamed Gabr Jan 2013

Biomechanics Of Porcine Renal Artery And The Development Of A Replacment Vessel, Mohamed Gabr

Theses and Dissertations

Mechanical characterization of biological soft tissues is essential in the field of biomedical engineering. In this study several loading experiments have been performed to efficiently characterize the passive mechanical response of both native porcine renal arteries and newly developed tissue constructs. The first aim of these studies is to determine whether there is a difference in mechanical response between the main renal artery and its first branch. After fitting the bi-axial data to a Holzapfel-type constitutive model, the results show that there is no statistical difference between the model parameters for renal artery and the first branch. The only significant …

The Rational Synthesis Of Supported Noble Single Or Bimetallic Catalysts By Electrostatic Adsorption, Hyeran Cho Jan 2013

The Rational Synthesis Of Supported Noble Single Or Bimetallic Catalysts By Electrostatic Adsorption, Hyeran Cho

Theses and Dissertations

Many catalysts are today prepared by impregnation (also called incipient wetness or dry impregnation) in which nominal amounts of metals are placed into the amount of solution just necessary to fill the pore volume of the support material. While dry impregnation (DI) is simple and the amounts of metals easily controlled, no attention is paid to metal-support or metal-metal interaction. When DI-deposited metal precursors are reduced, the particles tend to be large in size and there is often ppor contact between two metals in a bimetallic system. In this work we demonstrate the application of "strong electrostatic adsorption" (SEA) for …

Environmental Effects On Mechanical And Thermal Behaviors Of Zinc Oxide Nanobelts And Dispersion Of Carbon Nanostructures, Yingchao Yang Jan 2013

Environmental Effects On Mechanical And Thermal Behaviors Of Zinc Oxide Nanobelts And Dispersion Of Carbon Nanostructures, Yingchao Yang

Theses and Dissertations

One-dimensional (1-D) nanostructures, such as nanowires, nanobelts, and nanotubes of different materials, have significant applications as nanoscale interconnects and active/functional components of electronic and optoelectronic devices, sensors, actuators, nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS), and energy generation/conversion systems. The thermal and mechanical stabilities of those nanodevices and nanoenabled energy systems are of both theoretical and practical interests. Thermodynamic properties of nanomaterials are different from those of bulk materials. As the size of a solid particle reduces to the nanometer scale, the surface-to-volume ratio increases and the melting temperature may remarkably decrease. The functionality and/or reliability of those nanodevices and nanoenabled energy systems are …

Comparison Of A Particle Filter And Other State Estimation Methods For Prognostics Of Lithium-Ion Batteries, Eric Alan Walker Jan 2013

Comparison Of A Particle Filter And Other State Estimation Methods For Prognostics Of Lithium-Ion Batteries, Eric Alan Walker

Theses and Dissertations

A particle filter (PF) is shown to be more accurate than non-linear least squares (NLLS) and an unscented Kalman filter (UKF) for predicting the remaining useful life (RUL) and time until end of discharge voltage (EODV) of a Lithium-ion battery. The three algorithms track four states with correct initial guesses and 5% variation on the initial guesses. The more accurate prediction performance of PF over NLLS and UKF is reported for three Lithium-ion battery models: a data-driven empirical model, an equivalent circuit model, and a physics-based single particle (SP) model.

Structural Health Monitoring Of Composite Laminates Using Piezoelectric And Fiber Optics Sensors, Catalin Roman Jan 2013

Structural Health Monitoring Of Composite Laminates Using Piezoelectric And Fiber Optics Sensors, Catalin Roman

Theses and Dissertations

This research proposes a new approach to structural health monitoring (SHM) for composite laminates using piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWAS) and fiber optic bragg grating sensors (FBG). One major focus of this research was directed towards extending the theory of laminates to composite beams by combining the global matrix method (GMM) with the stiffness transfer matrix method (STMM). The STMM approach, developed by Rokhlin et al (2002), is unconditionally stable and is more computationally efficient than the transfer matrix method (TMM). Starting from theory, we developed different configurations for composite beams and validated the results from the developed analytical method …

Multi-Physicochemical Modeling Of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells And Electrolyzer Cells, Yuanyuan Xie Jan 2013

Multi-Physicochemical Modeling Of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells And Electrolyzer Cells, Yuanyuan Xie

Theses and Dissertations

Multi-physicochemical models are developed for solid oxide fuel cells and electrolysis cells. The models describe the complicated transport processes of charge (electron/ion) conservation, mass/species conservation, momentum conservation, and energy conservation. Transport processes are coherently coupled with chemical reforming processes, surface elementary reaction processes, as well as electro-oxidation processes of both hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The models are validated with experimental data and utilized for fundamental mechanism studies of SOFCs fueled with different type of fuels, such as hydrogen, hydrocarbon, e.g., methane, H2S, and their mixtures. The fundamental mechanisms associated with syngas generation using electrolysis cell are also extensively investigated using …

Accelprint:Accelerometers Are Different By Birth, Sanorita Dey Jan 2013

Accelprint:Accelerometers Are Different By Birth, Sanorita Dey

Theses and Dissertations

This paper submits a hypothesis that smartphone accelerometers possess unique fingerprints. We believe that the fingerprints arise from hardware imperfections during the sensor manufacturing process, causing every sensor chip to respond differently to the same motion stimulus. The differences in responses are subtle enough that they do not affect most of the higher level functions computed on them. Nonetheless, upon close inspection, these fingerprints emerge with consistency, and can even be somewhat independent of the stimulus that generates them. Measurements and classification on 80 standalone accelerometer chips, 25 Android phones, and 2 tablets, show precision and recall upward of 96%, …

This thesis explores the use of a DSP accelerated exact match short read mapping algorithm, focusing on a performance …

3d Grain Segmentation In Superalloy Images Using Multichannel Edge-Weighted Centroidal Voronoi Tessellation Based Methods, Yu Cao Jan 2013

3d Grain Segmentation In Superalloy Images Using Multichannel Edge-Weighted Centroidal Voronoi Tessellation Based Methods, Yu Cao

Theses and Dissertations

Accurate grain segmentation on 3D superalloy images is very important in materials science and engineering. From grain segmentation, we can derive the underlying superalloy grains' micro-structures, based on which many important physical, mechanical and chemical properties of the superalloy samples can be evaluated. However, grain segmentation is usually a very challenging problem since: 1) even a small 3D superalloy sample may contain hundreds of grains; 2) carbides and noises may degrade the imaging quality; and 3) the intensity within a grain may not be homogeneous. In addition, the same grain may present different appearances, i.e. intensities, under different microscope settings. …

Syntactic And Semantic Interoperability Among Hydrologic Models, Mostafa Mohamed Elag Jan 2013

Syntactic And Semantic Interoperability Among Hydrologic Models, Mostafa Mohamed Elag

Theses and Dissertations

Development of integrated hydrologic models requires coupling of multidisciplinary, independent models and collaboration between different scientific communities. Component-based modeling provides an approach for the integration of models from different disciplines. A key advantage of component-based modeling is that it allows components to be created, tested, reused, extended, and maintained by a large group of model developers and end users. One significant challenge that must be addressed in creating an integrated hydrologic model using a component-based approach is enhancing the interoperability of components between different modeling communities and frameworks. The major goal of this work is to advance the integration of …

Quantifying Regional-Scale Water Storage Using Models And Observations: Application For Drought Assessment In South Carolina, Mirza Md Mozaddid Billah Jan 2013

Quantifying Regional-Scale Water Storage Using Models And Observations: Application For Drought Assessment In South Carolina, Mirza Md Mozaddid Billah

Theses and Dissertations

Hydrologic models are widely used to determine the occurrence and severity of droughts, and to aid in the decision making process for reducing drought impacts. These models apply approaches including water and energy balance equations to determine water availability at field to continental scales. One challenge in implementing hydrologic models at larger scales (regional to continental) is the lack of data with sufficient spatial and temporal resolution to represent actual conditions within the modeling domain. If such data is available, the challenge remains how best to find, access, and process the data so that it can be used within hydrologic …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Surrogate Fuel Particles Using The Spark Erosion Method, Kathryn Elizabeth Metzger Jan 2013

Fabrication And Characterization Of Surrogate Fuel Particles Using The Spark Erosion Method, Kathryn Elizabeth Metzger

Theses and Dissertations

In light of the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant, the Department of Energy's Advanced Fuels Program has shifted its interest from enhanced performance fuels to enhanced accident tolerance fuels. Dispersion fuels possess higher thermal conductivities than traditional light water reactor fuel and as a result, offer improved safety margins. The benefits of a dispersion fuel are due to the presence of the secondary non-fissile phase (matrix), which serves as a barrier to fission products and improves the overall thermal performance of the fuel. However, the presence of a matrix material reduces the fuel volume, which lowers the fissile …

Pellet Cladding Mechanical Interactions Of Ceramic Claddings Fuels Under Light Water Reactor Conditions, Bo-Shiuan Li Jan 2013

Pellet Cladding Mechanical Interactions Of Ceramic Claddings Fuels Under Light Water Reactor Conditions, Bo-Shiuan Li

Theses and Dissertations

Ceramic materials such as silicon carbide (SiC) are promising candidate materials for nuclear fuel cladding and are of interest as part of a potential accident tolerant fuel design due to its high temperature strength, dimensional stability under irradiation, corrosion resistance, and lower neutron absorption cross-section. It also offers drastically lower hydrogen generation in loss of coolant accidents such as that experienced at Fukushima. With the implementation of SiC material properties to the fuel performance code, FRAPCON, performances of the SiC-clad fuel are compared with the conventional Zircaloy-clad fuel. Due to negligible creep and high stiffness, SiC-clad fuel allows gap closure …

Fault Protection In Dc Distribution Systems Via Coordinated Control Of Power Supply Converters And Bus Tie Switches, Pietro Cairoli Jan 2013

Fault Protection In Dc Distribution Systems Via Coordinated Control Of Power Supply Converters And Bus Tie Switches, Pietro Cairoli

Theses and Dissertations

A new fault protection method responds to the current needs of emerging dc power distribution systems by coordinating electronic power converters and mechanical contactors to rapidly isolate short circuit faults while maintaining continuity of power to loads. This work is important because the increasing performance, higher efficiency, and decreasing cost of electronic power converters have spurred a rediscovery and proliferation of dc power distribution systems. Although dc distribution offers advantages such as higher transmission efficiency, higher power density, higher reliability, and ease of interfacing asynchronous sources, enthusiasm for adopting dc technologies suffers from widespread concern over the means to protect …

Acoustic Emission Source Characterization Of Fatigue Crack Extension In Steel Bridge Material, Md Mozahid Hossain Jan 2013

Acoustic Emission Source Characterization Of Fatigue Crack Extension In Steel Bridge Material, Md Mozahid Hossain

Theses and Dissertations

The probability of Acoustic Emission (AE) detection associated with fatigue crack extension in steel bridge components is a difficult problem due to the complexity of the AE sources. AE is a very promising technique for structural health monitoring and automated micro-crack detection as it is generated by the material itself, unlike other nondestructive testing techniques (for example impact echo and ultrasonics), which require external input sources. Characterizing the source of AE is an ongoing challenge because AE sensors are not only sensitive to the AE signals but also to mechanical noise and reflections. It is therefore difficult to interpret the …

Liquefaction Potential Of South Carolina Coastal Plain Soils Using Dilatometer Data, Joseph Ronald Williamson Jan 2013

Liquefaction Potential Of South Carolina Coastal Plain Soils Using Dilatometer Data, Joseph Ronald Williamson

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years much research has been focused on developing the flat plate dilatometer (DMT) as a tool to estimate the liquefaction potential of soils. Currently the DMT is over shadowed by the more accepted methods of estimating liquefaction potential which utilize test data from either the standard penetration test (SPT), cone penetration test (CPT), or shear wave velocity test (Vs). The SPT, CPT, and Vs tests are all well-developed methods of estimating liquefaction potential and are supported by extensive databases; however, the DMT is believed by many researchers to be the superior alternative. Due to the DMT's minimal …

An Analysis Of Constructive Network Formation Models, Gary Fredericks Jan 2013

An Analysis Of Constructive Network Formation Models, Gary Fredericks

Theses and Dissertations

We study a family of network formation models to determine how payment rules affect the final network topologies that emerge. In our model a set of nodes starts out without any edges and the nodes must pay for the creation of edges using one of several different payment mechanisms. Example payment mechanisms include one node paying for the whole edge, and the cost being shared equally between the two nodes. We show how the set of networks formed by some payment rules are subsets of those formed by other rules. We also perform extensive empirical tests on networks of up …

Then the study and design of a wideband Coplanar Waveguide (CPW)-fed slot phased array antenna is presented. In both cases the …

Coordinated Control Of Power Electronic Converters In An Autonomous Microgrid, Gholamreza Dehnavi Jan 2013

Coordinated Control Of Power Electronic Converters In An Autonomous Microgrid, Gholamreza Dehnavi

Theses and Dissertations

Advances in power electronics and generation technologies have increased the viability of distributed generation systems. A microgrid is a special category of distributed generation systems that is distinguished by its size and the ability to operate independently as an islanded system. As long as a microgrid is connected to a large grid, quality of the voltage is supported by the main grid and each power source connected to the microgrid generates independently. In contrast, in the islanded operation of microgrids and in electrical islands such as shipboard distribution systems, dynamics are strongly dependent on the connected sources and on the …

Boiling And Evaporation On Micro/Nanoengineered Surfaces, Xianming Dai Jan 2013

Boiling And Evaporation On Micro/Nanoengineered Surfaces, Xianming Dai

Theses and Dissertations

Two-phase transport is widely used in energy conversion and storage, energy efficiency and thermal management. Surface roughness and interfacial wettability are two major impact factors for two-phase transport.
