The Feasibility Of Using A Markerless Motion Capture Sensor (Leap MotionTm Controller) Forquantitative Motor Assessment Intended For A Clinical Setting, Clay Jordan Kincaid
The Feasibility Of Using A Markerless Motion Capture Sensor (Leap MotionTm Controller) Forquantitative Motor Assessment Intended For A Clinical Setting, Clay Jordan Kincaid
Theses and Dissertations
Although upper limb motor impairments are common, the primary tools for assessing and tracking these impairments in a clinical setting are subjective, qualitative rating scales that lack resolution and repeatability. Markerless motion capture technology has the potential to greatly improve clinical assessment by providing quick, low-cost, and accurate tools to objectively quantify motor deficits. Here we lay some of the groundwork necessary to enable markerless motion capture systems to be used in clinical settings. First, we adapted five motor tests common in clinical assessments so they can be administered via markerless motion capture. We implemented these modified tests using a …
A Comparison Of Gestures For Virtual Object Rotation, Brandon Michael Garner
A Comparison Of Gestures For Virtual Object Rotation, Brandon Michael Garner
Theses and Dissertations
The fields of virtual reality and gesture-based input devices are growing and becoming more popular. In order for the two technologies to be implemented together, an understanding of gestures in relation to virtual objects and users' expectations of those gestures needs to be understood. Specifically, this thesis focuses on arm gestures for the rotation of virtual objects. Participants in the study were first asked to freely perform an arm gesture they felt should execute a task. Next, participants were asked to perform specific rotation tasks with pre- configured arm gestures on four objects. There were two types of objects: those …
Recognition Of Infrastructure Events Using Principal Component Analysis, Lane David Broadbent
Recognition Of Infrastructure Events Using Principal Component Analysis, Lane David Broadbent
Theses and Dissertations
Information Technology systems generate system log messages to allow for the monitoring of the system. In increasingly large and complex systems the volume of log data can overwhelm the analysts tasked with monitoring these systems. A system was developed that utilizes Principal Component Analysis to assist the analyst in the characterization of system health and events. Once trained, the system was able to accurately identify a state of heavy load on a device with a low false positive rate. The system was also able to accurately identify an error condition when trained on a single event. The method employed is …
Effects Of Tethering Placement And Linker Variations On Antibody Stability On Surfaces, Rebecca Ellen Grawe
Effects Of Tethering Placement And Linker Variations On Antibody Stability On Surfaces, Rebecca Ellen Grawe
Theses and Dissertations
An antibody microarray consists of antibody bound to a surface. Antibody microarrays have great potential in many fields, particularly as a tool to detect antigens. Unfortunately, antibodies suffer from poor performance. A greater understanding of how antibodies interact with surfaces would improve microarray design and performance, but experimental methods fall short of being able to observe these interactions. Therefore molecular simulation has emerged as the primary method to study protein/surface interactions. The simulations here were coarse grain simulations performed using the model of Karanicolas and Brooks. Additionally, an advanced surface model was used that allows for different surface chemistries. PyMBAR analysis …

Cooling Performance Of Reciprocating Aircraft Engines: A Quantitative Analysis Of 14 Cfr Part 23 Certification Requirements, Kevin Andrew Stuth
Theses and Dissertations
An analysis of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) aircraft certification requirements has revealed a potential error in the temperature correction formula the FAA requires aircraft manufacturers to use to process engine cooling performance data for compliance with Part 23 of Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR Part 23). The FAA engine cooling performance temperature correction formula, which predicts the critical temperature of engine components, was quantitatively evaluated using data acquired with a single-engine aircraft powered by a normally-aspirated, air-cooled, reciprocating engine. Previous research has failed to analyze the effect ambient air temperature has on oil temperature …

Theses and Dissertations
The measurement of hemoglobin concentration (Hb), oxygen consumption (mL and %), and partial pressure of oxygen inside the lungs are vital parameters in early prediction of respiratory diseases such as sepsis, septic shock, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) etc. The availability of these parameters in real time can play a crucial role in management of modes and parameters of the ventilators. The real time monitoring of patient’s vital signals in intensive care units can reduce the number of blood tests, time and cost spent inside the intensive care units. The medical conditions such as blood loss from surgery or an …
Multiscale Mechanics Of Bone: Examining The Influence Of Genetic Alterations, Brendyn James Miller
Multiscale Mechanics Of Bone: Examining The Influence Of Genetic Alterations, Brendyn James Miller
Theses and Dissertations
This MSc thesis investigates how genetic alterations involved in the synthesis of proteins or in the regulation of tissue remodeling affects the composition, structure and mechanics of bone at the multiscale levels. This was accomplished by performing two mouse model studies. In the first study, bone properties of TIMP-3 knock-out (Timp-3⁻ˊ⁻) mice were examined by performing mechanical testing, µCT analysis, and FTIR analysis. Results demonstrated that the mechanical integrity of the Timp-3⁻ˊ⁻ bone was compromised. Decreased values for the yield and ultimate load, stress capacity, and fracture toughness were observed in both the TIMP-3 deficient bones. These reductions in the …

A scalable and parallel platform is designed to execute the …
Evaluation Of User Perceived Qoe In Mobile Systems Using Social Media Analytics, Ahmed Yaseen Mjhool
Evaluation Of User Perceived Qoe In Mobile Systems Using Social Media Analytics, Ahmed Yaseen Mjhool
Theses and Dissertations
In mobile system environments, the quality perceived by users is inconstant and reliant on many factors such as cellular network, data connection, cost, coverage area, etc. Even though Quality of Service (QoS) management is enabled in most modern telecommunication systems, it does not guarantee the actual user’s perceived Quality of Experience (QoE) level. Many cellular networks rely on engineering test research, such as drive testing or smart mobile applications, to collect the required parameters in order to provide better service quality to users. However, this approach does not always yield customer satisfaction. Hence, user opinions should be considered. These opinions …
Multi-Axial Fiber Optic Reference Strain Sensor For Flexible Dynamics Of Structures, Gabriel Lapilli
Multi-Axial Fiber Optic Reference Strain Sensor For Flexible Dynamics Of Structures, Gabriel Lapilli
Theses and Dissertations
Launch vehicles are in an ever-decreasing weight trend, with bodies becoming more slender to reduce aerodynamic loading. Mass and stiffness tend to be opposing concepts when designing launch vehicles: a stiffer structure means it is usually heavier. Lower stiffness on launch vehicles may produce excessive vibrations during flight, reducing the performance, operating characteristics and safety margins of the vehicle. It also impacts flight dynamics: as the vehicle flies, the orientation of its thrusters and actuators are impacted by the vibrations, creating potential instabilities in the control schemes. This is currently accounted for by using single-point inertial measurements and feeding the …
Real Time Implementation Of An Inertial Measurement Unit Based On Fiber-Bragg Sensor Array Using Legendre Polynomial, Taher Saifee Parekh
Real Time Implementation Of An Inertial Measurement Unit Based On Fiber-Bragg Sensor Array Using Legendre Polynomial, Taher Saifee Parekh
Theses and Dissertations
Missiles and launch vehicle are trending towards becoming more slender in shape to reduce aerodynamic drag. Bending vibrations of the rocket body occur when a flying object with a large slenderness performs pitch or yaw command. The onboard Inertia Measurement Unit (IMU) measures the attitude and the angular velocities of the deflected body as well as the rigid body motion and in turn feeds these signals back to the control loop. Feedback of the vibrating information degrades the control system stability and in the worst case makes the system unstable. These effects become more significant when the slenderness ratio of …

Theses and Dissertations
Lack of oil resources and increasing effects of global warming have emphasized and led to stricter regulation standards. To meet the current demands, the engines need to be highly efficient in terms of fuel efficiency and performance. One of the fundamental ways to achieve this goal is by studying the fuel atomization and the combustion process. However, there are several challenges involved in studying the process of atomization and combustion only through experimental approaches as they involve numerous parameters. A suitable supplement or alternative to the experimental approach is the numerical approach. Advances in high performance computing, have led to …
Modeling And Analysis Of A Novel Imbedded Organic Thermal Cycle, Joel Maker Faure
Modeling And Analysis Of A Novel Imbedded Organic Thermal Cycle, Joel Maker Faure
Theses and Dissertations
A thermal cycle is a device that converts thermal energy into work energy. There is a strong need in the United States and the world for a cycle that can have viable performances with low-grade temperature heat sources to increase the supply of power generation. There are many cycles with different configurations, however most do not involve mixing. Generally speaking this is due to modeling difficulties with multiple constituents, phases, and the technology available that lose performance under these mixed conditions. The gap in technology for mixed flow and phase components is getting smaller due to the need. Current cycles …
Time Series Classification Using Covariance Descriptors, Oluwaseun Winsala
Time Series Classification Using Covariance Descriptors, Oluwaseun Winsala
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents a novel framework for time series classification that leverages the geometric structure of covariance matrices when labeling signals. Our method maps each signal to a new multivariate localized feature signal (MLFS) representation, from which we compute a covariance descriptor. This robust MLFS covarieance representation handles classification tasks where the sampling rates of the signals vary within a class or classes. We demonstrate that by simply using the k-nearest neighbor classification rule and multiclass kernel support vector machine with the Riemannian metric between the MLFS convariance matrices, which produces state-of-the-art results on a number of standard datasets. Moreover, …

Theses and Dissertations
A myoelectric-controlled prosthesis holds the promise of renewed quality of life for the amputee population. When it comes to prosthesis control, muscle fatigue presents a significant challenge for all task discrimination algorithms due to changed muscle activation patterns and significant shifts in the spectral contents of the surface electromyogram (sEMG) signals. The effect of muscle fatigue on the classification accuracy of two supervised machine-learning algorithms, i.e. the linear discriminant analysis (LDA), and the muscle synergy based task discrimination (MSD) was investigated. Due to muscle fatigue, the classification accuracies declined from (>90%) to 41% and 59% for the LDA and …

Fuzzy Expert Systems: A More Human-Based Approach For Sensorial Evaluation Of Coffee-Bean Attributes To Derive Quality Scoring, Javier A. Livio
Theses and Dissertations
In the coffee industry, "cupping" is the process of sensorial evaluations of coffee beans, also known as Sample Evaluation. This process is done for three major reasons: to determine the actual sensory differences between coffee samples, to describe the flavors of the samples, and to determine preference of product. In totality, cupping targets the measurement of the coffee's quality related to fragrance, taste, and appearance which are expressed with a final numerical score. When cupping, the expert judge writes down the individual components' scores (fragrance, aftertaste, acidity, body, etc.) and ranks their intensities for reference. Despite the fact the cuppers …
Analysis Of The Fm Radio Spectrum For Secondary Licensing Of Low-Power Short-Range Cognitive Internet-Of-Things Devices Via Cognitive Radio, Derek Thomas Otermat
Analysis Of The Fm Radio Spectrum For Secondary Licensing Of Low-Power Short-Range Cognitive Internet-Of-Things Devices Via Cognitive Radio, Derek Thomas Otermat
Theses and Dissertations
The number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices is predicated to reach 200 billion by the year 2020. This rapid growth is introducing a new class of low-power short-range wireless devices that require the use of radio spectrum for the exchange of information. To offset this extraneous demand for radio spectrum, the low-power short-range IoT devices need to utilize vacant spectrum through the use of Cognitive Radio (CR). The analysis presented in this dissertation indicates that the FM radio spectrum is underutilized in areas of the continental United States that have a population of 100,000 or less. These locations have …

A Robust Speaker Identification Algorithm Based On Atomic Decomposition And Sparse Redundant Dictionary Learning, Thomas James Bryan Jr.
A Robust Speaker Identification Algorithm Based On Atomic Decomposition And Sparse Redundant Dictionary Learning, Thomas James Bryan Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
Speaker identification is performed in high additive white Gaussian noise environments by processing sounds as images in the time-frequency plane. The technique creates audio streams that remove background noise from speech while preserving speech quality. Atomic decomposition is implemented by the matching pursuit algorithm using Gabor or gammatone atomic dictionaries. Gabor atoms were originally proposed as fundamental building blocks of speech; whereas, gammatone atoms closely resemble the human cochlear impulse response. Atomic decomposition creates a sparsely populated time-frequency vector referred to as weight space. The populated positions in weight space have amplitude weights that are proportional to localized energy in …

Rotational Strength And Stiffness Of Shallowly Embedded Base Connections In Steel Moment Frames, Kevin N. Hanks
Rotational Strength And Stiffness Of Shallowly Embedded Base Connections In Steel Moment Frames, Kevin N. Hanks
Theses and Dissertations
Shallowly embedded column base connections with unreinforced block out concrete are a common method of connecting steel columns to their foundation. There has been little research done to accurately quantify the effects of this block out concrete on the connection strength and rigidity, and therefore there is nothing to aid the practicing engineer in accounting for this in structural analysis. Due to this lack of understanding, engineers have typically ignored the effects of shallow block out concrete in their analysis, presumably leading to a conservative design. Recent research has attempted to fill this gap in understanding. Several methods have been …
