Development, Classification And Biomedical Applications Of Nano Composite Piezoresponsive Foam, Aaron Jake Merrell
Development, Classification And Biomedical Applications Of Nano Composite Piezoresponsive Foam, Aaron Jake Merrell
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the development of and applications for Nano-Composite Piezoresponsive Foam (NCPF). This self-sensing foam sensor technology was discovered through research in a sister technology, High Deflection Strain Gauges (HDSG), and was subsequently developed with some of the same base materials. Both technologies use nano and micro conductive additives to provide electrically responsive properties to materials which otherwise are insulative. NCPF sensors differ from HDSGs in that they provide a dual electrical response to dynamic and static loading, which is measured through an internally generated charge, or a change in resistance. This dissertation focuses on the development of …

Reinforcing Bar Splice Performance In Masonry With Self-Consolidating Grout, Aaron Brent Roper
Theses and Dissertations
The use of self-consolidating grout in reinforced masonry construction provides various advantages such as reduced labor, faster construction, decreased noise pollution and better structural response. This is a relatively new building material however, and little research on self-consolidating grout's structural properties has been conducted. The purpose of this study was to analyze the performance or bond capacity of steel reinforcing bar splices in masonry with self-consolidating grout. Twelve masonry panels approximately 40 in. wide and 32 in. tall consisting of Type S mortar and concrete masonry units grouted with self-consolidating grout and No. 5 steel reinforcing bars were constructed with …
Quantifying Grain Boundary Atomic Structures Using The Smooth Overlap Of Atomic Positions, Jonathan Lake Priedeman
Quantifying Grain Boundary Atomic Structures Using The Smooth Overlap Of Atomic Positions, Jonathan Lake Priedeman
Theses and Dissertations
In this work, the relationship between grain boundary crystallography and grain boundary atomic structure is examined, using [1 0 0] - symmetric tilt grain boundaries in nickel. The structural unit model is used as a benchmark to evaluate the atomic structure description capacities of an emerging structural descriptor, the local environment representation, which itself is a refinement of the also-emergent Smooth Overlap of Atomic Positions (SOAP) descriptor. We show that the local environment representation encodes both the information of the structural unit model and additional information, such as distortion in the structural units and the arrangement of the structural units …
The Estimation Of The Rapidscat Spatial Response Function, Samuel Gary Bury
The Estimation Of The Rapidscat Spatial Response Function, Samuel Gary Bury
Theses and Dissertations
RapidScat is a pencil-beam wind scatterometer which operated from September 2014 to August 2016. Mounted aboard the International Space Station (ISS), RapidScat experiences significant altitude and attitude variations over its dataset. These variations need to be properly accounted for to ensure accurate calibration and to produce high resolution scatterometer images. Both the antenna pose and the one-way antenna pattern need to be validated. The spatial response function (SRF) is the two-way antenna pattern for a scatterometer combined with the processing and filtering done in the radar system electronics, and is dominated by the two-way pattern. To verify the pointing of …

Using a modified Ohm's …
Optimization Methods For A Reconfigurable Ota Chamber, Matthew David Arnold
Optimization Methods For A Reconfigurable Ota Chamber, Matthew David Arnold
Theses and Dissertations
Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology has enabled increased performance of wireless communication devices. The increased complexity associated with MIMO devices requires more realistic testing environments to ensure device performance. This testing can be accomplished by either very accurate but expensive anechoic chambers, less accurate but inexpensive mode-stirred chambers, or the newly introduced reconfigurable over-the-air chamber (ROTAC) that combines the benefits of both anechoic chambers and reverberation chambers. This work focuses on efficient optimization methods to quantify the performance of the ROTAC. First, an efficient optimization technique that combines convex optimization and a simple gradient descent algorithm is developed that can be …
Multiplexed Optofluidics For Single-Molecule Analysis, Matthew Alan Stott
Multiplexed Optofluidics For Single-Molecule Analysis, Matthew Alan Stott
Theses and Dissertations
The rapid development of optofluidics, the combination of microfluidics and integrated optics, since its formal conception in the early 2000's has aided in the advance of single-molecule analysis. The optofluidic platform discussed in this dissertation is called the liquid core anti-resonant reflecting optical waveguide (LC-ARROW). This platform uses ARROW waveguides to orthogonally intersect a liquid core waveguide with solid core rib waveguides for the excitation of specifically labeled molecules and collection of fluorescence signal. Since conception, the LC-ARROW platform has demonstrated its effectiveness as a lab-on-a-chip fluorescence biosensor. However, until the addition of optical multiplexing excitation waveguides, the platform lacked …
An Analysis Of Using Error Metrics To Determine The Accuracy Of Modeled Historical Streamflow On A Global Scale, Elise Katherine Jackson
An Analysis Of Using Error Metrics To Determine The Accuracy Of Modeled Historical Streamflow On A Global Scale, Elise Katherine Jackson
Theses and Dissertations
Streamflow data is used throughout the world in applications such as flooding, agriculture, and urban planning. Understanding daily and seasonal patterns in streamflow is important for decision makers, so that they can accurately predict and react to seasonal changes in streamflow for the region. This understanding of daily and seasonal patterns has historically been achieved through interpretation of observed historical data at stream reaches throughout the individual regions. Developing countries have limited and sporadic observed stream and rain gage data, making it difficult for stakeholders to manage their water resources to their fullest potential. In areas where observed historical data …
Efficient Fpga Soc Processing Design For A Small Uav Radar, Luke Oliver Newmeyer
Efficient Fpga Soc Processing Design For A Small Uav Radar, Luke Oliver Newmeyer
Theses and Dissertations
Modern radar technology relies heavily on digital signal processing. As radar technology pushes the boundaries of miniaturization, computational systems must be developed to support the processing demand. One particular application for small radar technology is in modern drone systems. Many drone applications are currently inhibited by safety concerns of autonomous vehicles navigating shared airspace. Research in radar based Detect and Avoid (DAA) attempts to address these concerns by using radar to detect nearby aircraft and choosing an alternative flight path. Implementation of radar on small Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV), however, requires a lightweight and power efficient design. Likewise, the radar …

Effects Of Verbal Vs Graphical Weather Information On A Pilots Decision-Making During Preflight, Warren Phillip Pittorie
Effects Of Verbal Vs Graphical Weather Information On A Pilots Decision-Making During Preflight, Warren Phillip Pittorie
Theses and Dissertations
Before a general aviation pilot conducts a flight, they obtain a preflight weather briefing that shares information on possible hazards along the intended route of flight. These preflight weather briefings are typically obtained either verbally, via a narrative delivered over a telephone, or visually, where graphical and textual information is presented on a computer or tablet display. This study compared verbal and graphical/textual weather briefings in a within-subjects study that altered the order in which participants received each format. Thirty-six participants were given a survey that contained two flight scenarios, each with specific weather scenarios and a specific briefing format. …
Numerical Analysis Of A Compact Helical Counterflow Heat Exchanger, Manikandan Chidambaram
Numerical Analysis Of A Compact Helical Counterflow Heat Exchanger, Manikandan Chidambaram
Theses and Dissertations
The performance of compact counter flow heat exchangers with helically shaped passages is examined using a 1-D analytical model and compared with a high-fidelity 3-D numerical simulation. The 1-D model is capable of assessing the general trends associated with the heat transfer performance and fluid pressure losses, whereas the high fidelity 3-D numerical model is needed to provide more accuracy. For water flow rates of 0.01 kg/s -1 kg/s, the models are used to predict the overall heat transfer coefficient ratio for a straight and counter helix heat exchanger. The maximum difference between the 3-D numerical and 1-D analytical model …

Development Of A Static Aeroelastic Database Using Nastran Sol 144 For Aircraft Flight Loads Analysis From Conceptual Design Through Flight Test, Ryan M. Haughey
Theses and Dissertations
This paper describes a method for predicting aircraft aerodynamic and inertial loading on a structural finite element model, (FEM) based on static aeroelastic coefficients. These coefficients are computed via interpolated spline methods within NASTRAN Solution 144 (static aeroelastic solution) and the “TRIM” module to connect the doublet-lattice model (DLM) and the structural finite element model for a coupled solution. The database is created by selecting key breakpoints where linear interpolation techniques can be utilized to develop and predict static aeroelastic coefficients for the prediction of any aircraft state for a given transient solution. This method is applicable from conceptual design …
Multimodal Fusion Detection System For Autonomous Vehicles, Michael Person
Multimodal Fusion Detection System For Autonomous Vehicles, Michael Person
Theses and Dissertations
In order for autonomous vehicles to safely navigate the road ways, accurate object detection must take place before safe path planning can occur. Currently there is a gap between models that are fast enough and models that are accurate enough for deployment. We propose Multimodal Fusion Detection System (MDFS), a sensor fusion system that combines the speed of a fast image detection CNN model along with the accuracy of a LiDAR point cloud data through a decision tree approach. The primary objective is to bridge the trade-off between performance and accuracy. The motivation for MDFS is to reduce the computational …

Additionally, it found that student age and their parents' education level were significant players in their academic success. However, there were no correlations found between major satisfaction and academic performance.
Simulated Tremor Propagation In The Upper Limb: From Muscle Activity To Joint Displacement, Thomas Henry Corie
Simulated Tremor Propagation In The Upper Limb: From Muscle Activity To Joint Displacement, Thomas Henry Corie
Theses and Dissertations
Although tremor is the most common movement disorder, there are few non-invasive treatment options. One of the obstacles to creating effective tremor suppression devices is our lack of understanding regarding where tremor originates (which muscles), how it propagates through the limb (to which degrees of freedom, DOF), and where it manifests most severely (which DOF). To investigate these questions, we created a simple, linear time-invariant model to simulate tremor, with tremorogenic muscle activity input (in the 15 major superficial muscles from the shoulder to the wrist) and joint displacement output (in the 7 major upper limb DOF). The model included …

Therefore, the objectives of this research were to develop and analyze deterioration curves for bare concrete bridge decks and decks with specific treatments commonly used in Utah. The scope of this study was determined by the types and extent of electronically available data, including selected static inventory information; maintenance, rehabilitation, and reconstruction histories; and National Bridge Inventory (NBI) condition ratings for the bridge …
Measuring And Calculating Current Atmospheric Phosphorous And Nitrogen Loadings On Utah Lake Using Field Samples, Laboratory Methods, And Statistical Analysis: Implication For Water Quality Issues, Jacob Milton Olsen
Theses and Dissertations
Atmospheric nutrient loading and transport though precipitation and dry deposition is one of the least understood yet one of the most important pathways of nutrient transport into many lakes. These nutrients, phosphorus and nitrogen, are essential for aquatic life and often play major roles in algae blooms that occur in lakes and reservoirs. Often heavy algal growth intensifies a variety of water quality problems. Utah Lake may be even more susceptible to atmospheric deposition due to its large surface area to volume ratio and proximity to Great Basin dust sources. In this study, eight months of atmospheric deposition data were …

Effect Of Gyroscope Parameters On Gyroscopic Tremor Suppression In A Single Degree Of Freedom, Brendon Connor Allen
Effect Of Gyroscope Parameters On Gyroscopic Tremor Suppression In A Single Degree Of Freedom, Brendon Connor Allen
Theses and Dissertations
Although tremor is one of the most common movement disorders, there are few effective tremor-suppressing options available to patients. One potential tremor-suppression device involves a wearable gyrostabilizer similar to those used to stabilize cameras. However, we do not currently know how to design a gyrostabilizer to suppress tremor in an optimal manner. To address this gap, we present a systematic investigation of how gyrostabilizer parameters affect tremor suppression in a single degree of freedom (DOF). A simple model of the hand with a single DOF at the wrist and a gyroscope mounted on the back of the hand was used …
Force And Motion Based Methods For Planar Human-Robot Co-Manipulation Of Extended Objects, Erich Allen Mielke
Force And Motion Based Methods For Planar Human-Robot Co-Manipulation Of Extended Objects, Erich Allen Mielke
Theses and Dissertations
As robots become more common operating in close proximity to people, new opportunities arise for physical human-robot interaction, such as co-manipulation of extended objects. Co-manipulation involves physical interaction between two partners where an object held by both is manipulated in tandem. There is a dearth of viable high degree-of-freedom co-manipulation controllers, especially for extended objects, as well as a lack of information about how human-human teams perform in high degree-of-freedom tasks. One method for creating co-manipulation controllers is to pattern them off of human data. This thesis uses this technique by exploring a previously completed experimental study. The study involved …

In this research, a study was done to investigate the differences in performance between MUCAD and single-user CAD teams, in which teams competed to create the best model of a hand drill. This was done across a three-day period to recreate the scenario found in industry. It was found that MUCAD increases awareness …
Effect Of Inclined Loading On Passive Force-Deflection Curves And Skew Adjustment Factors, Joshua Rex Curtis
Effect Of Inclined Loading On Passive Force-Deflection Curves And Skew Adjustment Factors, Joshua Rex Curtis
Theses and Dissertations
Skewed bridges have exhibited poorer performance during lateral earthquake loading in comparison to non-skewed bridges (Apirakvorapinit et al. 2012; Elnashai et al. 2010). Results from numerical modeling by Shamsabadi et al. (2006), small-scale laboratory tests by Rollins and Jessee (2012), and several large-scale tests performed by Rollins et al. at Brigham Young University (Franke 2013; Marsh 2013; Palmer 2013; Smith 2014; Frederickson 2015) led to the proposal of a reduction curve used to determine a passive force skew reduction factor depending on abutment skew angle (Shamsabadi and Rollins 2014). In all previous tests, a uniform longitudinal load has been applied …

Numerical And Analytical Modelling For Droplet Evaporation Resulting In Convective Flow Cooling Verified By Experimentation, Adwaith Ravichandran
Numerical And Analytical Modelling For Droplet Evaporation Resulting In Convective Flow Cooling Verified By Experimentation, Adwaith Ravichandran
Theses and Dissertations
The temperature of a gaseous convective stream can be reduced by injecting a colder liquid into the stream. The extent to which this gas temperature can be reduced depends on the amount of liquid being injected into the gas flow domain, rate of energy transfer (heat) from the gas phase to the liquid resulting in evaporation and the length of the domain itself referred to in this study as a “mixer”. This study proposes the use of a non-dimensional Damkohler number that relates the liquid residence time and the liquid life time which could serve as a yardstick to determine …
