Finite Element Analysis Of The Behavior Of Foundations Over Cavities In Soluble Rocks, Borhan Huang May 1984

Finite Element Analysis Of The Behavior Of Foundations Over Cavities In Soluble Rocks, Borhan Huang

Theses

Soluble rocks contain sinkhole that affect the strength of the rocks. In designing foundations in and on these formation, the effects of cavities have to be taken into account. In this study, an axisymmetric formulation has been developed to study the behavior of circular footings over spherical cavities. Parametric studies have been conducted varying the sizes and locations of openings. An approximate procedure has been employed to generate the stiffness matrix of the system. Error analysis and convergence study of the results have been performed.

Modification Of A Heat Transfer Program (Stan5) To Account For Surface Roughness And Its Application To Aerodynamic Icing, Parthasarathy R. Iyengar

Theses

In order to be able to predict the local ice accretion rate or the icing profile on an airfoil, it is necessary that a suitable heat transfer coefficient model be availabIe. A computer program has been developed which is capable of predicting the local heat transfer coefficient for a typical two dimensional icing surface. Because of the charecteristics of an icing surface, an existing computer program (STAN5) has been modified to include the effects of the following surface roughness surface curvature and boundary layer transition.

The computer program for the heat transfer coefficient has then been used with an existing …

Computer Analysis Of The Stefan Problem In Cryosurgery, Dong Hyuk Kim May 1984

Computer Analysis Of The Stefan Problem In Cryosurgery, Dong Hyuk Kim

Theses

Numerical solutions for determining the freezing front location vs time relation in cryosurgery are obtained by utilizing the heat transfer computer program TRUMP, which employs the explicit finite difference algorithm. The probe geometries of rectangular, cylindrical, and spherical shape with one dimensional heat flow are selected for study. Internal heat generation is considered in cylindrical and sphe¬rical probe geometries, and the difference between the solutions with and without heat generation is discussed. To verify the correctness of the TRUMP solution, comparisons are made in the freezing distance vs time relation with the Neumann's solution and the implicit enthalpy method for …

Coupled Flexural And Torsional Vibrations Of Beams, Sang Hwan Kim May 1984

Coupled Flexural And Torsional Vibrations Of Beams, Sang Hwan Kim

Theses

This thesis deals with the vibration of a beam whose flexural and centroidal axis are not coincident. The elementary bending- twisting theory is employed to derive the equations of motion, in which the effects of rotary inertia are added to the bending displacements and the effects of warping are added to the twist. Bending translation is restricted to one direction so that one bending equation is used instead of two. The equations of motion are solved by using the boundary value problem. The exact natural frequencies are found from the frequency equation , which is obtained from the condition that …

Decision Rules Applied To Spread Spectrum Signal Detection, Richard Jae Kim May 1984

Decision Rules Applied To Spread Spectrum Signal Detection, Richard Jae Kim

Theses

Decision rules for detection of spread spectrum signals were investigated. For each decision rule, error and erasure probabilities were analyzed. The obtained data was used to plot PE vs Pe for constant signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). With the use of the probability of a word error curves the optimum threshold setting was found for a given SNR.

FSK (orthogonal signalling) and PSK (antipodal signalling) were considered for modulating the chips. When the PE vs Pe plots for FSK and PSK were compared, PSK performed better than FSK by a ratio of 6 dB.

Finally, analog and digital correlation of the received …

The Detection Of Partial Discharges In Transformer Oil, Gerald J. Fitzpatrick May 1984

The Detection Of Partial Discharges In Transformer Oil, Gerald J. Fitzpatrick

Theses

The level, meaning the number and the intensity Of partial discharges that occur in transformer oil per time period of applied pulse when a high voltage is applied can be used as a measure of the quality and remaining life of the oil. The level of partial discharges at a given applied voltage can be correlated with the degree of contamination of the oil by impurities such as water and conductive particles and can be used as an indicator of the proximity of the oil to breakdown. There are several approaches to the detection of partial discharges, e.g., acoustic measurements, …

Behavior Of L-Shaped Reinforced Concrete Columns Under Combined Biaxial Bending And Compression, Amar Shah

Theses

Combined biaxial and axial compression for L-shaped reinforced concrete short columns is a common design Problem. Current code, provisions and the available design aids do not offer an insight into the determination of strength and ductility of biaxially loaded reinforced concrete column. An experimental and analytical investigation of the moment-deformation behavior of biaxially loaded L-shaped short columns were undertaken. Four 1/2 scaled specimens were tested till failure. Moment-curvature and load-deflection curves were developed from the experimental and the analytical results. The analytical results were obtained using a computer program developed by Hsu (1). From the investigation it is deduced that …

Loads, at constant rate, were gradually applied until failure. At each loading stage, measurements were made for the strains and deflections at the mid span section.

The experimental and theoretical results of the load- deformation and moment-curvature were compared and found that the analytical approach proposed by Hsu is applicable to irregular sections …

Acrylamide Effects On Nerve Terminal Enzymes, Christopher S. E. Marlowe May 1984

Acrylamide Effects On Nerve Terminal Enzymes, Christopher S. E. Marlowe

Theses

Acrylamide causes a peripehral neuropathy. The biochemical mechanism by which it does so is the subject of intense investigation. One of the principal hypotheses for this mechanism centers on acrylamide's ability to inhibit glycolysis. This study examines the effects of in vivo exposure to acrylamide on the enzymes of the nerve terminal particle, the synaptosome.

A method for measuring glycolytic enzyme inhibition in the synaptosome was developed. Acrylamide (500 mg/kg) was administered to rats intraperitoneally. Synaptosomes were prepared by the method of Dodd et al, and lysed by sonication. GAPDH activity and NSE concentration were measured. GAPDH inhibition measured in …

Half of the specimens contained 1.5 percent by volume of hooked end fibers. The study of the behavior of these beam column joints has indicated 2 cases of failures: a critical region in which the inelastic behavior was controlled by bending and, a critical region in which the inelastic behavior was controlled by high shear. …

Design Of A Photoreactor For The Oxidation Of Toxic Pollutants In Water By Ozone And Ultraviolet Radiation, Shahab Rashid Khan Oct 1983

Design Of A Photoreactor For The Oxidation Of Toxic Pollutants In Water By Ozone And Ultraviolet Radiation, Shahab Rashid Khan

Theses

A photoreactor has been designed to oxidize refractory chemicals found in water using ozone and ultraviolet radiation. The feasibility of the ozone/UV process has been examined by conducting experiments with three model compounds, namely, (1) o-chlorophenol (2) m-chlorophenol and (3) p-chloro phenol. For o-chlorophenol and p-chloro-phenol, reactions were very fast with ozone/UV oxidation and somewhat slower with m-chlorophenol. It is concluded that UV irradiation increases the decomposition of ozone and the resulting unstable intermediates are much more reactive than ozone. Ultraviolet light also helps in decomposing the substrate molecules. The effect of UV upon decomposition of ozone is more pronounced …

Spectral Analysis Of Brainstem Auditory Evoked Responses, Amir Hossein Massumkhani Oct 1983

Spectral Analysis Of Brainstem Auditory Evoked Responses, Amir Hossein Massumkhani

Theses

In this study, the power spectrum density of the brainstem auditory evoked responses is estimated by the method of periodogram. Several techniques for reducing the leakage due to the finite length of data, smoothing the spectrum and reducing the ambiguity in the spectrum due to the resolution are studied. It is shown that a Hamming window reduces the leakage considerably and zero extention of the data to 512 points produces sufficient spectrum bandwidth. Three major peaks are observed at 100, 500, and 1000 Hz which are stable for different evoked responses. In one case with a delayed wave V, the …

The six monomers were characterized by mp, liquid chromatography, IR, NMR, and elemental analysis. All the characterizations show that the monomers are indeed the desired products.

The Quasisteady Approach For Thermal Analysis Of Frost Action Below Refrigerated Warehouses, Milan Kumar Bag Sep 1983

The Quasisteady Approach For Thermal Analysis Of Frost Action Below Refrigerated Warehouses, Milan Kumar Bag

Theses

The quasisteady method of analysis has been used to determine the frost depth below refrigerated warehouses. For the case when the ground temperature is different from phase change temperature, the solution is obtained by numerical integration of the equation governing the phase change process. When the ground temperature approaches the phase change temperature closed form solution is obtained. The results obtained from the quasisteady method compare well with the experimental results. The results presented in this thesis should find use in the design of the refrigerated warehouses in the colder regions of the world.

The computer programs written in FORTRAN are designed to generate the optimal (s,S,T) ordering policy of any above-mentioned inventory …

Mathematical Model Of Temperature Profiles And Coking In A Crude Oil Heater Tube, Joseph C. Polimeni Sep 1983

Mathematical Model Of Temperature Profiles And Coking In A Crude Oil Heater Tube, Joseph C. Polimeni

Theses

A mathematical model to predict temperature profiles and coking of crude oil in furnace tubes is presented. The model assumes that the coking mechanism is due to a reaction in the laminar sublayer, whose rate depends upon the temperature profile. That profile is obtained by a numerical solution of the appropriate transport equations, with velocity profiles that may be laminar or turbulent, and including the temperature dependence of the crude oil properties. In addition, velocity and temperature profiles were adjusted when necessary to ensure closure of the heat and material balances. As a by-product of this study, a correction was …
