The Computer-Aided Generation Of Flow-Tables For Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Ronald Lee Altman Jan 1968

The Computer-Aided Generation Of Flow-Tables For Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Ronald Lee Altman

Masters Theses

"One step in the synthesis of asynchronous sequential circuits is the construction of a flow table. This paper discusses the requirements of a computer program to allow on-line generation of flow tables for asynchronous sequential circuits. Such topics as the form of the data entered into the program, the type of terminal required, the routines necessary for the designer to enter and correct data, and the internal data structure are discussed. An algorithm for the generation of these flow tables is also presented"--Abstract, page ii.

The Density Of Horizontal Control In Missouri, Norman Lee Brown

Masters Theses

"In 1965 the Missouri Legislature passed House Bill 201 adopting the Missouri Plane Coordinate System as computed by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey. The requirements of this law and the density and distribution of usable control within the state is the topic of this thesis"--Abstract, page ii.

A Study Of A Model-Referenced Adaptive Control System, James William Graham Jan 1968

A Study Of A Model-Referenced Adaptive Control System, James William Graham

Masters Theses

"A model-referenced adaptive controller for a first-order plant with time-varying parameters is developed using Lyapunov's second method. The system is studied with the aid of analogue computer simulation and an oscillatory mode is encountered. A method of reducing the oscillations by addition of a compensating network is proposed. The compensation is obtained through the use of linearization and root locus techniques. The compensated system shows a much improved error response over the original system"--Abstract, page ii.

A Mechanical Metallurgical Method Of Predicting The Springback Tendencies Of A Bent Metal Strip, Jerrold Myles Alyea Jan 1968

A Mechanical Metallurgical Method Of Predicting The Springback Tendencies Of A Bent Metal Strip, Jerrold Myles Alyea

Masters Theses

"Attempted substitution of new solid materials and composite metal strips for those materials presently being used in many applications now being pursued vigorously in industry. A serious problem was created because the newly proposed materials do not exhibit the same springback after bending as did the previously used materials in a particular bend angle and radius situation. Elementary bend theory and mechanical metallurgical techniques have been incorporated into a method which can be used to accurately predict the .2% offset yield strength of any proposed rolled-temper solid metal strip and some composite strips when they must exhibit the same springback …

A Method Of Supervised Pattern Recognition By An Adaptive Hypersphere Decision Threshold, Darroll Steven Mccormack Jan 1968

A Method Of Supervised Pattern Recognition By An Adaptive Hypersphere Decision Threshold, Darroll Steven Mccormack

Masters Theses

"In this study the Bayes likelihood detector is combined with an adaptive decision threshold classifier to solve the multicategory pattern recognition problem. It is assumed that the pattern classes can be represented by an n-dimensional vector sample taken from a multivariate gaussian probability distribution. This study presents (1) the derivation of the A̲daptive H̲ypersphere D̲ecision T̲hreshold classifier (AHDT classifier) and shows (2) how the AHDT classifier minimizes the probability of error using the learning patterns. Finally the AHDT classifier is applied to the solution of a physical problem through computer simulation"--Abstract, page ii.

The Influence Of Silt On The Compressibility Of An Illitic Clay, James Inman Spencer Jan 1968

The Influence Of Silt On The Compressibility Of An Illitic Clay, James Inman Spencer

Masters Theses

"This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of varying amounts of clay (illite) on the compressibility of a silt as it may be found in nature in a normally consolidated deposition. Laboratory procedure was designed to minimize sample disturbance so as to obtain, as nearly as possible, a virgin consolidation curve. By varying the amounts of silt and clay in a given sample, and sedimenting the sample from a soil-water suspension, consolidation test analyses were used for a comparison of the various samples. Results revealed that between sample mixtures of 40 and 60 percent silt there was a relatively …

The N-Wire Exponential Transmission Line, Vernon Ray Stanley Jan 1968

The N-Wire Exponential Transmission Line, Vernon Ray Stanley

Masters Theses

"This paper deals with the n-wire exponentially tapered transmission line. A characteristic impedance is defined, and the results of terminating in this impedance are investigated. A very long line and the condition of no reflections are considered, and the conclusions are compared. Finally, three specific 3-wire line problems are worked with a characteristic impedance termination and a unit step input"--Abstract, page ii.

Corrosion Rates And Electrokinetics Of Cobalt And Cobalt-Rich Cobalt-Iron Alloys In Sulfuric And Hydrochloric Acids, Cheng Tzong Horng Jan 1968

Corrosion Rates And Electrokinetics Of Cobalt And Cobalt-Rich Cobalt-Iron Alloys In Sulfuric And Hydrochloric Acids, Cheng Tzong Horng

Masters Theses

"Corrosion rates for Co and Co-rich Co-Fe alloys were determined in sulfuric and hydrochloric acids under both deaerated and oxygenated conditions. For the purpose of comparison, corrosion rates of Co cut from metal sheet were also determined in the same environments as those of sintered alloys. Sintered alloys were inferior to solid Co as corrosion resistant materials. It was found that the surface was more corrosion resistant than the interior. Thus after long exposure to the corrosive acid, the samples became porous inside while the surfaces remained substantially intact. Oxygen had a pronounced effect in accelerating the corrosion of Co …

Transient Response Of A Class Of Distributed Systems, Jaw-Shyong Tzeng Jan 1968

Transient Response Of A Class Of Distributed Systems, Jaw-Shyong Tzeng

Masters Theses

"The transient response of uniform distributed systems with any transfer function that is rational in w=e[square root of Ts] can be analyzed with the basic form of the transfer function [1 over (w-a)] after partial fraction expansion, where the pole a can be real or complex in the w plane. with the complex pole within the stable region in the w plane, there are only two possible combinations of the basic transfer function [1 over (w-a)], i.e. [1 over (w-a)] ł [1 over (w-a*)], for physical realizability. The imaginary part of the transient response of the basic transfer function [1 …

A Comparison Of Proportional And Nonproportional Damping In Multistory Shear Buildings, Edwin C. Bailey Jan 1968

A Comparison Of Proportional And Nonproportional Damping In Multistory Shear Buildings, Edwin C. Bailey

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this study was to determine whether proportional damping could be used to satisfactorily simulate the more practical nonproportional damping condition in multistory shear buildings. To accomplish this one computer program was written to analyze proportionally damped systems and another to analyze nonproportionally damped systems, each giving as output the frequencies, mode shapes, displacements, shears and moments and the maximum shears and moments. Shear buildings of two, three and four stories were studied in which the damping coefficients were varied from one to ten percent of critical damping. Although the programs could handle various other types, only linearly …

A Simulation Of The Transistor By Computer Using The Linvill Diffusion Model, Clifford D. Skouby Jan 1968

A Simulation Of The Transistor By Computer Using The Linvill Diffusion Model, Clifford D. Skouby

Masters Theses

"This investigation involves the construction of an analog computer model of the transistor. The computer model is based upon the Linvill diffusion model. The equations for the Linvill diffusion model were programmed on the computer by making certain approximations. Different models, using different approximations, were used for the different regions of operation of the transistor. A composite analog model was constructed by combining the models for the restricted regions, giving a general model good for all regions of transistor operation. This analog diffusion model was modified to account for the effects of junction capacitance and base resistance. The modified analog …

Permeability And Additive Sorption And Extraction In Lubricating Greases, Chan-Shan Fan Jan 1968

Permeability And Additive Sorption And Extraction In Lubricating Greases, Chan-Shan Fan

Masters Theses

"The effect of the area and type of surface of ten silica thickeners and aluminum oxide on grease permeability, on the sorption of PAN [Phenyl-α-naphthylamine] by the grease, and on subsequent extraction were studied. For grease containing 6% per cent of thickener, permeability coefficients varied from 20.1 x 10⁻¹¹ cm² to 168 x 10⁻¹¹ cm². For each silica type they decreased with increase in surface area of the thickener. The level of the permeability coefficient is generally related to the worked penetration. In sorption measurements using permeating oils of varying PAN concentration, the amount of PAN associated with the thickener …

Influence Of Nobler Metal Salt Additions Upon The Dissolution Rate Of Aluminum In Hydrofluoric Acid, Barry L. Basden Jan 1968

Influence Of Nobler Metal Salt Additions Upon The Dissolution Rate Of Aluminum In Hydrofluoric Acid, Barry L. Basden

Masters Theses

"The rate of dissolution of aluminum in 2N HF upon the addition of nobler metallic salts was studied. Aluminum corrodes in HF due to the acid's ability to dissolve the protective oxide present on the surface. Rates were measured by the hydrogen evolution method. Salt additions of AgN0₃, CuSO₄, HAuC₄, and PtCl₄ to aluminum dissolving in 2N HF resulted in the electroless deposition of more or less coherent metals (from the salts mentioned) on the aluminum surface. The dissolution rate initially decreased in all of the cases and was attributed to the "blanketing effect" of the deposits. Ensuing increases of …

Thixotropic Effects In A Clay-Water System, John Arthur Mathes Jan 1968

Thixotropic Effects In A Clay-Water System, John Arthur Mathes

Masters Theses

"Fundamental aspects of thixotropic phenomena are described, and previous investigations of thixotropic behavior in soil systems are summarized. The complex nature of the thixotropic phenomena as well as its general occurrence in fine grained soils is described. As existing hypothesis for thixotropic behavior based on initial non-equilibrium conditions is examined. Experimental results, as determined from a testing program on the Putnam clay, verify this hypothesis. The rate and magnitude of thixotropic strength increases of the Putnam clay were determined. Shear strength determinations were made by the unconfined compression and laboratory vane shear tests. The results of the tests were compared …

The Analysis Of A Phase-Locked Loop By The Functional Expansion Method, Hugh Francis Spence Jan 1968

The Analysis Of A Phase-Locked Loop By The Functional Expansion Method, Hugh Francis Spence

Masters Theses

"The time response of a generalized second order Phase-Locked Loop to step and ramp inputs is described by a functional power, truncated at the third order term. The responses given by the functional power series differs from the analog simulation by less than 6% when the inputs are below 2.0 rad (rad/sec)"--Abstract, page ii.

An Unsteady-State Method For Determining The Thermal Conductivity Of Materials, Richard H. Bulmer Jan 1968

An Unsteady-State Method For Determining The Thermal Conductivity Of Materials, Richard H. Bulmer

Masters Theses

"Originally this work was initiated to develope [sic] a method for measuring the thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity of metals. Due to the characteristics of the method and the equipment used, it was concluded that the technique is not suitable for materials of high conductivity. However, results show that the apparatus is valuable for the determination of the thermal diffusivity of relatively poor heat conductors. The favorable characteristics of the method are its rapidity and basic simplicity"--Abstract, page ii.

Electric Field Investigations And A Model Of Electrical Spraying Of Liquids, Wallace Deshon Jan 1968

Electric Field Investigations And A Model Of Electrical Spraying Of Liquids, Wallace Deshon

Masters Theses

"The equation E = [2 V] [over] [N 1n(4d/N] has been used for determining the electric field at the liquid tip in electrical spraying of liquids. Data were taken at the instant of spraying in an attempt to experimentally verify this equation. The results indicate that the value given by the equation needs to be increased by about 20% in the normal range of operation. A model for the spraying mechanism of the liquid is also proposed"--Abstract, page ii.

An Ultrasonic Pulse Generator Using The Transducer As A Frequency Determining Element, Donald E. Watke Jan 1968

An Ultrasonic Pulse Generator Using The Transducer As A Frequency Determining Element, Donald E. Watke

Masters Theses

"This paper describes the development of a method of ultrasonic pulse generation in which the transducer determines the frequency of oscillation. A definite advantage of this method is the ability of the frequency of oscillation to change with changes in the transducer mechanical resonant frequency. This maintains peak efficiency at all times. The method is demonstrated in a small sonar transmitter but could be applied to any area involving driven ultrasonic transducers"--Abstract, page ii.

Effects Of Pressure On The Mechanical Properties Of Magnesium, Joseph George Hoeg Jan 1968

Effects Of Pressure On The Mechanical Properties Of Magnesium, Joseph George Hoeg

Masters Theses

"The data collected in an attempt to evaluate the pressure dependency of the mechanical properties of extruded AZ31B-F magnesium alloy are presented herein. This information was compiled from the results of compression tests run in hydraulic fluid environments pressurized to 50,000 psi, and tension tests run in the atmosphere. Specimen axial load and longitudinal strain were recorded and converted to effective stress and effective strain parameters for presentation. The term pressure is defined, in this report, as the negative average of the principal stresses or, essentially, the negative of the hydrostatic component of stress. The effective stress and strain, at …

An Analysis Of Dirac Delta Generated Spherical Waves In An Infinite Maxwell Medium, William F. Breig Jan 1968

An Analysis Of Dirac Delta Generated Spherical Waves In An Infinite Maxwell Medium, William F. Breig

Masters Theses

"It is an accepted fact that the simple Maxwell and Voigt models do not usually represent the behavior of real materials. In order to make the results of a model more realistic, other combinations of springs and dashpots must be considered. To understand the more complicated models, it is desirable to have a knowledge of the Maxwell model since this element usually occurs either in series or in parallel in the advanced models. This investigation reports solutions of the spherical wave equation in both the elastic and viscoelastic media. Laplace transform techniques are used to obtain the parameters; stress, velocity, …

Solid State Squib Simulator, Ernest Paul Lee Jan 1968

Solid State Squib Simulator, Ernest Paul Lee

Masters Theses

"The simulators described in this paper allow checkout of the electrical control circuitry of pyrotechnic and related devices where the actual testing of the devices would be destructive. A simulator is described that is superior to the units now available for test purposes. Solid state components are used exclusively and hence it is very light weight and reliable. It is portable and requires no external power for indication of the control circuitry performance. The simulator presents a load that is adjustable between one and five ohms for a controlled length of time from one to one hundred milliseconds. Transients will …

Computer Simulation Of Radiation Damage In Fe₃Al, Roland Otto Jackson Jan 1968

Computer Simulation Of Radiation Damage In Fe₃Al, Roland Otto Jackson

Masters Theses

"A computer program, designed to simulate the ordered state of the B.C.C. alloy, Fe₃Al, was used to study the effects of irradiation on an order-disorder alloy. Twenty-six runs were made with this program representing a variety of initial conditions. In all cases, the final damaged state consisted of Frenkel defects, vacancy-interstitial pairs; and the distance separating these pairs was a sensitive function of the energy and direction imparted to the primary knock-on. Both the vacancy and the interstitial were found to be normal, stable defects, with the interstitial residing in a "split"-configuration oriented in the [110] direction. The threshold energies …

Design Of A Sequential Detector, Scott William Abel Jan 1968

Design Of A Sequential Detector, Scott William Abel

Masters Theses

"The communication engineer has in the past treated the detection problem from a limited point of view. Detectors have been designed to reach a decision based on a specified number of samples. This approach has proved valuable, but it offers no provisions for an early decision if a conclusion becomes obvious early in the sampling. Neither is there an opportunity for additional sampling if necessary to reach a definite conclusion, because of these limitations it is desirable to find more general detectors. This study looks at a specific statistics (the sign test) and designs a sequential detector to utilize this …

Drag Reduction In Hydrocarbon Soap Solutions, Ian Radin Jan 1968

Drag Reduction In Hydrocarbon Soap Solutions, Ian Radin

Masters Theses

"Turbulent flow pressure drop measurements were made for solutions of aluminum dioleate (soap) in toluene at concentrations of 0.2, 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0 per cent. Tube diameters ranged in size from 0.01 to 2.0 inches. The results of these measurements differed from those observed in aqueous systems. Higher concentrations (at least 0.75 per cent) were required before drag reduction was observed. Although fresh solutions were somewhat sensitive to shearing, once a solution was over about two weeks old it showed little further mechanical degradation. Although in the toluene solutions, wall shear stresses were reached which were over an order of …

Relationships Among The Metallurgical Condition, Hardness, And The Electrical Conductivity Of Aluminum Alloys, Richard A. Mueller Jan 1967

Relationships Among The Metallurgical Condition, Hardness, And The Electrical Conductivity Of Aluminum Alloys, Richard A. Mueller

Masters Theses

"Electrical conductivity measurements (eddy current determined) combined with indentation hardness measurements are now being used throughout the aerospace industry for nondestructive evaluation of the metallurgical condition of commercial precipitation hardenable aluminum alloys. The review of literature and experiments with two aluminum alloys, 7178 and a 5% Zn-Al binary, have shown that skilled interpretation of hardness-conductivity data depends not only upon a qualitative understanding of the modern wave mechanical theories of electron conduction, but also upon some knowledge of the precipitation reaction kinetics. In particular, the effects of "quenched-in" vacancies and retrogression upon the reaction kinetics must be considered. Studies of …

Collision And Pursuit Course Terminal Closures For Spacecraft To Satellite Rendezvous, John Anthony Campbell Jan 1967

Collision And Pursuit Course Terminal Closures For Spacecraft To Satellite Rendezvous, John Anthony Campbell

Masters Theses

"Collision and pursuit course closure maneuvers were studied for correcting position and velocity errors in the terminal phase of spacecraft to satellite rendezvous.

Minimum values of the ratio of initial range to velocity necessary to achieve rendezvous were determined for collision closures as a function of the initial line of sight. The time and velocity increment required for rendezvous were computed as a function of initial conditions.

Pursuit closure maneuvers were analyzed and time and velocity increments defined as a function of initial range, closing velocity, line of sight angle and angular velocity.

The velocity increments required were significantly higher …
