A Comparative Study Of Experimental And Computed Compressibility Factors Of Ethane-Carbon Dioxide-Nitrogen System, Brij Raj Misra
Masters Theses
"The purpose of this study was to provide compressibility factor data on the ethane - carbon dioxide - nitrogen system. Compressibility factors were experimentally determined for 5 mixtures at room temperature, 100ºF, 125ºF , 150ºF and pressures ranging between 1000 psig to 4000 psig. An attempt was also made to compare the experimental data with the compressibility factors obtained by the additive volume method. The deviation of the computed compressibility factor from the experimental data was found to be in accordance with the general view of previous workers. However, the deviation was found to be a maximum in the pressure …
Fracture Surface Energy Determinations Of High Density Polycrystalline Ceramics, Gene Arthur Pahlmann
Fracture Surface Energy Determinations Of High Density Polycrystalline Ceramics, Gene Arthur Pahlmann
Masters Theses
"Values of fracture surface energy were measured for steatite, zircon, mullite and four densities of alumina. Rods of these high density materials were cut into thin rectangular specimens which were notched and broken in three-point loading. The resulting load necessary for fracture of the specimens was used to calculate the fracture surface energy of the materials. The value for the steatite was around 20,000 ergs/cm². The values for the zircon and mullite were on the order of 13,000 ergs/cm², and the values for the aluminas ranged from 17,000 to 24,000 ergs/cm²"--Abstract, page ii.
Numerical Solutions Of The Torsional Oscillations Of A Shaft-Flywheel System, Mahendrakumar Ramkrishna Patel
Numerical Solutions Of The Torsional Oscillations Of A Shaft-Flywheel System, Mahendrakumar Ramkrishna Patel
Masters Theses
"The application of the finite-difference technique, the Fourier transform, and the Laplace transform for the solution of a system governed by the one-dimensional wave equation is examined. A specific example consisting of a continuous shaft-flywheel system acted upon by an exciting torque applied at a specific section of the shaft is studied. The exact solution to this example is obtained using the classical method of superposition of modes, and is used as a reference to evaluate the accuracy (in terms of the rms error) and relative efficiency (based on computer time) of three approximate solution methods. A sinusoidal excitation was …
The Effects Of Magnetic Fields Upon The Steady State And Short Circuit Performance Of Low Voltage Multi-Link Fuses, John Thomas Schultz
The Effects Of Magnetic Fields Upon The Steady State And Short Circuit Performance Of Low Voltage Multi-Link Fuses, John Thomas Schultz
Masters Theses
"The steady state and short circuit performance of multi-link fuses is investigated, as it is affected by the magnetic field of the nearby returning current and the current flowing in the fuse itself. The fuses investigated are low voltage (600 volts or less), multi-link fuses with ratings between 400 and 4000 amperes. The effects of the above mentioned magnetic fields upon the steady state current distribution within the fuse and upon the mechanical forces acting on the individual fuse links are calculated, while the effects of close proximity of the returning current upon short circuit fuse performance are shown by …
The Anodic Dissolution Of Tungsten, Ching-Lun Wu
The Anodic Dissolution Of Tungsten, Ching-Lun Wu
Masters Theses
"The anodic dissolution of tungsten was studied in H₂SO₄-K₂SO₄ solutions (pH= -2 to 2.5) andK₂SO₄-K₂CO₃-KOH solutions (pH = 11.5 to 14.5) at 25ºC. Faradaic efficiency studies in basic solutions showed that the metal was oxidized to the +6 state. In acid solutions, a thick protective film of yellow WO₃ was formed. Polarization measurements showed linear Tafel behavior (slope ~ 2.3RT/F) in the potential region slightly more positive than the rest potentials. An anodic dissolution mechanism is proposed which involves a surface film of W₂O₅ that is further oxidized to WO₃ and dissolves by hydrolyzation"--Abstract, page 1.
Digital Simulation Of A Signal Conditioner/Bit Synchronizer, Quentin Reed Webb
Digital Simulation Of A Signal Conditioner/Bit Synchronizer, Quentin Reed Webb
Masters Theses
"A bit rate filter type signal conditioner/bit synchronizer used in a split-phase PCM system is modeled digitally in three stages to determine overall system performance. General computer algorithms are developed to approximate independent operation of each major segment within the device. Bit rate effects and signal time-base error are investigated yielding the characteristic G-curves for the phase detector. These characteristics facilitate subsequent analysis of a linear equivalent digital-data-transition tracking phase-locked loop under several typical time-base error input conditions. Using bit error probabilities as performance criteria, the conditioner/synchronizer is found to perform adequately at signal-to-noise ratios exceeding +10dB. For inputs below …
Probe Detection Of Microwave Perturbation In A Magnetoplasma, Show-Ran Peter Wang
Probe Detection Of Microwave Perturbation In A Magnetoplasma, Show-Ran Peter Wang
Masters Theses
"When a microwave signal with a frequency near the electron upper hybrid resonance is applied to a magnetoplasma, it will excite the plasma. The perturbation of plasma can be detected by using Langmuir probes. The particular plasma used in this experiment is an argon discharge type and the density is relatively low (n~10⁸ cm⁻³). The electron temperature is about 7000º K. Because a magnetic field is applied to the plasma, it is necessary to use the probe theory in a magnetic field to calculate the electron number density from the electron temperature. In order to determine the electron upper hybrid …
Bound-Free Continuum Radiation From Non-Gray Nonisothermal Shock Layers, Chu Yih Wang
Bound-Free Continuum Radiation From Non-Gray Nonisothermal Shock Layers, Chu Yih Wang
Masters Theses
"This study investigates the continuum radiative flux from nonisothermal stagnation shock layers composed of atomic gases. The general equations for the composition are derived and the Rankine-Hugoniot equations are simplified and solved to give the thermodynamic conditions of the shock layers. To accurately model the stagnation shock layer, the plasma must be considered to be nonisothermal. In the current study, linear shock layer temperature profiles are assumed. Consequently, the fluid dynamics and the radiation are uncoupled. The radiation model assumes one-dimensional radiative energy transport and considers only continuum processes. The radiative flux is calculated by considereing ground to free state …

The Influence Of A Carbon Ablation Layer On Radiation From A Hydrogen Shock Layer, Birbal Singh
Masters Theses
"The effect of ablation heat shields on the radiative heat transfer to vehicles entering hydrogen atmospheres at thermo-dynamic conditions similar to those expected in Jovian atmospheres is investigated. The shock layer is assumed to consist of two plane parallel layers, one consisting of pure hydrogen species, and the other consisting of carbon species only. Each layer is assumed to be in local thermodynamic equilibrium at its respective temperature. The thermodynamic conditions in the hydrogen layer are arrived at by solving the Rankine-Hugoniot Equations across the shock. The temperature of carbon layer is taken as (3000, 5000, and 7000ºK) to cover …

Next-State Equation Generation For Asynchronous Sequential Circuits - Normal Mode, Gregory Martin Bednar
Masters Theses
"This paper describes the known methods of generating next-state equations for asynchronous sequential circuits operating in normal fundamental mode. First, the methods that have been previously developed by other authors are explained and correlated in a simple and uniform language in order that the subtle differences of these approaches can be seen. This review is then followed by a development of a new method for generating minimal next-state equations which has some advantages over the previous methods. From the comparison of the previous known methods, it is noted that any one of these methods may be desirable for certain designs …

Since DNS representation is not necessarily unique, new algorithms to generate the number of representations and all equivalent representations are presented in this paper. A Block-Oriented-Computer (BOC) is developed as an array of computing systems. For each of the systems, the arithmetic unit is essentially a modified Digital Differential Analyzer. The …
An Explicit Simulation Of Overland Flow, Glendon Taylor Stevens
An Explicit Simulation Of Overland Flow, Glendon Taylor Stevens
Masters Theses
"Computer simulation of overland flow requires a mathematical model which converges to a true solution. This paper presents a method, based on measurable physical parameters, which insures convergence of a fixed grid explicit numerical solution. Analysis of a wide range of overland flow plane parameters has resulted in an equation of the form Δt = 0. 2 ΔX/So, for the time step increment. This equation provides values for Δt that will insure stability and convergence of the fixed grid explicit numerical method of solving the spatially varied unsteady flow equations. The effect of subarea shape on the rising …

Determination Of Reservoir Characteristics From Capillary Pressure Curves And Electrical Properties Of Rocks, Prasanta Kumar Guharoy
Masters Theses
"Based upon the assumptions that a porous medium is analogous to a bundle of capillary tubes and that there is equivalence of electrical and hydraulic tortuosity in a porous medium, empirical expressions are presented which relate capillary pressure data and electrical properties of the rock to the porosity, permeability and relative-water permeability, respectively, of completely water-wet rocks. Experimental data are presented for comparison in order to verify their validity. Three principal models are presented, each of which is characterized by a particular expression for estimating tortuosity. The method of determining this parameter was varied in order to find the form …

Fault Detection In Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Jeng-Chuan Kau
Masters Theses
"As the asynchronous sequential circuit has become more and more important to digital systems in recent years high reliability and simple maintenance of the circuit is stressed. This paper presents a fault-detection algorithm which will be applicable to most of the practical asynchronous sequential circuits. The asynchronous sequential circuit is treated from the combinatoric point of view. First the minimal set of states, both stable states and unstable states, sufficient to detect all possible faults of the circuit is found from the fault table. Then a test sequence is generated to go through these states. It is assumed that testing …

Magnetohydrodynamic Channel Flow With Non-Uniform Inlet Velocity Profiles, Gwok-Liang Chen
Magnetohydrodynamic Channel Flow With Non-Uniform Inlet Velocity Profiles, Gwok-Liang Chen
Masters Theses
"An analysis is made of laminar magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow development in the entrance region of a parallel-plate channel. The problem is formulated in general for any velocity distribution at the channel inlet by extending the linearization method of Sparrow, Lin, and Lundgren for non-MHD duct flows. This method involves linearization of the inertia terms in the equation of motion by introducing a stretched axial coordinate. A closed form solution is obtained for the velocity distributions which are continuous across the channel and along the length all the way from the entrance to the fully developed region. An expression for the …
