Fault Detection On Sequential Machines, Chung-Tao David Wang Jan 1970

Fault Detection On Sequential Machines, Chung-Tao David Wang

Masters Theses

"This paper presents an algorithm for deriving an optimum test sequence for detecting faults in a synchronous machine. In this study, the flow table is used as a tool to generate the fault detection tests. The fault stuck-at-1 (or stuck-at-0 ) is said to be present when a permanent signal valued 1 (or 0) appears on a component of the machine. Only single faults are treated . The result of the procedure is one or more test sequences guaranteed to detect a set of faults (Fp). First, sequential machines with feedback lines as memory elements are considered . …

The Test System is a building block concept and this paper developed the hardware and programming software necessary to integrate an oscilloscope into the system. A Tektronix Type 564 oscilloscope with a Tektronix Type 3A5 Programmable Amplifier and a Tektronix Type 3B5 Programmable Time Base was used. A prototype of the digital and analog interface between the Test System and the Tektronix System was built and demonstrated. The Oscilloscope Building Block displays waveforms only …

A Study Of The Effects Of Pressure-Induced Viscosity Changes On The Fluid Flow Characteristics In A Circular Tube, Robert Charles Weber Jan 1970

A Study Of The Effects Of Pressure-Induced Viscosity Changes On The Fluid Flow Characteristics In A Circular Tube, Robert Charles Weber

Masters Theses

"A method of determining the response of fluids under high pressure to quick-release into the atmosphere is presented in this report. The analytical efforts have been formulated into two parts, a closed-form solution and a numerical analysis. By assuming constant viscosity of the fluid a closed-form solution was obtained. The assumption of constant viscosity was found to be acceptable for the test fluids up to an initial pressure of approximately 10,000 psi. A numerical analysis became necessary for initial pressures over 10,000 psi, where the variable viscosity of the fluid had to be considered. The experimental work was conducted by …

Metallographic Study Of Phase Changes In Heat Treated Ductile Iron, Mahendra Vadilal Desai Jan 1970

Metallographic Study Of Phase Changes In Heat Treated Ductile Iron, Mahendra Vadilal Desai

Masters Theses

"Continuous cast ductile iron samples were hardened. It was found that carbide dissolved in the austenite faster than graphite and that this material requires higher austenitizing temperatures and longer austenitizing time than steels. Tempered microstructures were affected by the prior austenitizing treatment and it appeared that the amount of carbon dissolved in the austenite determined the tempered microstructure. Several attempts to determine the austenite grain size indicated that it is not as easy to determine in ductile iron as in steels. Two techniques, heat etching and an isothermal transformation method, were found to reveal prior austenite grain size. It was …

Oxygen Uptake By The Benthal Sludge Of A Waste Stabilization Pond, Edward Landon Niedringhaus Jan 1970

Masters Theses

"This thesis describes the laboratory evaluation of the benthal sludge oxygen uptake of a 6.7 acre waste stabilization pond which has served a city of 2,400 population for a period of seven years. Special emphasis is directed toward the explanation of laboratory techniques developed for this study to measure the oxygen uptake rate. The effects on oxygen consumption of temperature, nature of sludge, initial oxygen tension, and sludge consolidation are discussed. Benthal sludge samples were taken from three locations in the pond. Oxygen consumption studies were conducted in a specially designed plastic cylinder which included a novel magnetic mixing system. …

The Failure Criteria And Deformational Moduli Of Granular Rock, Kyung Chul Ko Jan 1970

The Failure Criteria And Deformational Moduli Of Granular Rock, Kyung Chul Ko

Masters Theses

"Analytical solutions of stress for composite material are obtained by means of mathematical theory of elasticity, assuming spherical inclusions and uniform displacements of boundaries of representative elements. These solutions show that the failure criteria of composite materials are complicated functions of the elastic moduli of matrix, inclusion and composite, and the volume ratio of matrix and inclusion. Combining this theory with Griffith's theory gives a new criteria for brittle failure of granular rook. This theory appears to provide a nearly perfect model for granular rooks, inasmuch as: a) most assumptions used in other criteria are eliminated, b) most phenomena in …

The Anodic Oxidation Of Oxalic Acid On Au, Steven C. Mueller Jan 1970

The Anodic Oxidation Of Oxalic Acid On Au, Steven C. Mueller

Masters Theses

"The anodic oxidation of oxalic acid on Au has been studied at 80°C in aqueous media. The reaction rate was measured as a function of potential, oxalic acid concentration, pH, and temperature in H₂SO₄-K₂SO₄-KOH solutions of unit ionic strength. The oxalic acid was oxidized only in acidic media. The oxidation to CO₂ was essentially complete. A first order dependence of the rate on both pH and undissociated oxalic acid was found. A mechanism is proposed in which the first decarboxylation is the rate determining step"--Abstract, page 1.

The Smelting Of Lead Drosses, Humberto Adolfo Arzabe Jan 1970

The Smelting Of Lead Drosses, Humberto Adolfo Arzabe

Masters Theses

"The constitution of the matte and bullion obtained by the smelting of lead drosses coming from the cooling of lead blast furnace bullion was investigated by metallographic, chemical, electron-microprobe, and X-ray means. At smelting temperatures (1200°C to 1300°C) two liquid phases are in equilibrium. A liquid lead phase with low concentrations of copper and sulfur, and a lighter liquid matte phase containing a high concentration of copper and sulfur with some dissolved lead. On cooling to room temperature the matte precipitates cuprous sulfide, a eutectic mixture of cuprous sulfide and lead sulfide with a deficiency of sulfur, and metallic lead …

Electric Field Strength Dependency Of The Rate Of Radiation Induced Degradation In Silicon Planar Devices, Cyrus Hoshang Irani Jan 1970

Electric Field Strength Dependency Of The Rate Of Radiation Induced Degradation In Silicon Planar Devices, Cyrus Hoshang Irani

Masters Theses

"The investigation of electric field strength dependence of the rate of damage introduction, caused by gamma and neutron irradiations in matched is reported. Groups of devices (with varying biases applied to the emitter-base and collector-base junctions to allow study of the electric field strength dependence) were exposed to ionizing gamma radiation from a Co-60 source. Similar experiments were conducted to study the field strength dependence of the rate of space-charge volume damage introduction, caused by fast neutrons (E> l0keV, fission source). The experimental results indicate that the rate of surface degradation, as reflected by the increase of the normalized surface …

Spheroidization In Tool Steels, Sharad Gajanan Bankar Jan 1970

Spheroidization In Tool Steels, Sharad Gajanan Bankar

Masters Theses

"A carbon steel, W1, and four other alloy tool steels, namely, A2, H13, D3, and M2, were spheroidized by five different procedures. Any modification made in the treatments for an individual steel were suggested by the results obtained with these five procedures. The hardnesses and microstructures obtained were compared with steel samples annealed at a tool steel mill. The response given by different steels to various methods of spheroidization was studied. It was found that A2, W1, and D3 steels responded the best to the cycling method whereas the best response to the isothermal annealing was given by H13 and …

Effect Of Inclination On Film Boiling, Shih-Chang Lin Jan 1970

Effect Of Inclination On Film Boiling, Shih-Chang Lin

Masters Theses

"The object of this investigation was to determine the effect of inclination on the heat transfer for film pool boiling. The test plate used as the heater was made of Inconel-600 and heated electrically. Liquid nitrogen at atmospheric pressure was used as the test fluid. The heater was oriented at various angles from the horizontal position with the heater surface facing both upward and downward and the heat transfer coefficient was determined for each angle over temperature differences ranging from 450ºF to 750ºF. As the heater angle was increased from 0º (horizontal) to 90º (vertical), the heat transfer coefficient increased …

On-Line Digital Computer Decoding Of Radio Teletype, Julio Alberto Spiegel

Masters Theses

"Digital computer data processing is one of the newest and fastest growing technologies. The large amount of data that can be processed is practically beyond the limit of human possibilities when available time, cost and reliability of results are taken into consideration. The use of on-line digital computer data processing to decode Radio Teletype is investigated in this thesis. The first part of this thesis considers existing teletype systems and related systems, such as Pulse Code Modulation, pointing out the differences between synchronous and asynchronous codes. The most critical step in decoding Radio Teletype is synchronization, since Radio Teletype makes …

Re-Design Of Cloud Chamber Instrumentation, Stanley Forrest Vaninger Jan 1970

Re-Design Of Cloud Chamber Instrumentation, Stanley Forrest Vaninger

Masters Theses

"Instrumentation and a new valving system is designed and built for use with an expansion type cloud chamber. Digital equipment is used for timing to improve reliability, accuracy, and flexibility, and a servo system is built using a lead compensator circuit which improves the servo system typically used with cloud chambers. Special care was taken to eliminate the sources of noise that appear in the amplified signal from the pressure transducer. The equipment needed to measure, record, and calibrate the pressure inside the chamber is built"--Abstract, page ii.

Statistical Estimate Of Positional Error Inherent In Very Low Frequency Radio Navigation (Range-Range), Jimmie D. Mcginnis Jan 1970

Statistical Estimate Of Positional Error Inherent In Very Low Frequency Radio Navigation (Range-Range), Jimmie D. Mcginnis

Masters Theses

"To determine the effectiveness of Very Low Frequency (VLF) navigation in certain areas of the world, it is necessary that a method be developed to estimate the positional error associated with VLF relative positioning techniques. This paper presents a method which consists of a least-mean-squared procedure to sum up the errors contributed by each station being monitored. Since phase jitter (i.e., phase fluctuation) is a random variable, a statistical approach is employed to produce a one Σ ellipse centered about the true position. In short, this method defines the size and orientation of an area called an error ellipse which …

An Approximate Min-Max Solution To The Identification Problem, Richard Loyd Warren Jan 1970

An Approximate Min-Max Solution To The Identification Problem, Richard Loyd Warren

Masters Theses

"A technique based on the min-max error criterion is proposed for identifying a dynamic system in terms of a discrete-time model from the system response to a deterministic input. A linear, single-input/single-output, lumped-parameter, time-invariant (at least during the measurement interval) system is assumed. Although the resulting problem is non-linear, it is shown that linear programming techniques are applicable if a realistic approximation is made. The technique is implemented on the digital computer and evaluated by considering a number of typical discrete-time systems. The effects of additive noise are also considered"--Abstract, page ii.

The Design And Construction Of An Inertia Welder, Arthur Ferdinand Grimm Jan 1970

The Design And Construction Of An Inertia Welder, Arthur Ferdinand Grimm

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was the design and fabrication of a machine to bond metal to metal using the inertia method of friction welding. This method of bonding is considered far superior to the heretofore employed friction welding processes as will be explained later. The inertia method controls the energy imparted to the weld by using a flywheel which has been brought to a state of predetermined kinetic energy due to rotation. This energy is then transferred to the weld zone in the form of heat due to rotational friction. Hollow specimens with a cross-sectional area of 0.306 square …

The Effect Of Solvents On The Desorption Of Phenol From Carbon, Robert Harold Pahl Jan 1970

The Effect Of Solvents On The Desorption Of Phenol From Carbon, Robert Harold Pahl

Masters Theses

"The desorption of phenol from active carbon was studied using cyclic and continuous flow desorbers. A wide difference in desorption capabilities was shown among nine solvents. The system employed was complex, with water being present in addition to phenol on the carbon. An attempt to correlate the desorption data with the physical properties of the phenol and solvent and Regular Solution theory are presented. A thermodynamic approach using the linear free energy-enthalpy relationship produced an apparently good correlation of the heat of formation of the phenol-solvent hydrogen bond with the desorption data. This indicates that the desorption of the phenol …

Investigations Of Several Variables In The Dwight-Lloyd Mcwane Ironmaking Process, James Orlan Hood Jr. Jan 1970

Investigations Of Several Variables In The Dwight-Lloyd Mcwane Ironmaking Process, James Orlan Hood Jr.

Masters Theses

"The Dwight- Lloyd McWane Ironmaking Process (D-LM) is the first commercial process of its particular type and one of the few commercial processes involving prereduction of iron ore in existence today. This presentation reviews some promising ironmaking processes which involve iron ore prereduction, with special attention being given the D-LM process. Although the D-LM process is continuous from iron ore to high quality molten cast iron, the research and discussion herein is limited to principal variables involved in the production of high quality carbonized pellets in the prereduction phase of the operation. The variables of process temperature and pellet carbon …

A Permeability Scaling Technique In The Numerical Simulation Of Water Coning, Virendra Kumar Dutta Jan 1970

A Permeability Scaling Technique In The Numerical Simulation Of Water Coning, Virendra Kumar Dutta

Masters Theses

"A two-dimensional, two-phase, radial, horizontally layered water coning simulator was programmed for large memory digital computers. A permeability sealing technique is developed which allows the use of large size blocks as production blocks. As a result of this technique large time steps have been used without causing saturation instabilities around the well bore and the permeability scaling technique allows a more realistic simulation of a water cone. The IMPES method is used to calculate pressure and saturation in the system for each finite time step. The behaviour of the simulator is studied for various factors affecting the advance of a …

A Proposed Concept For The Rapid Field Design Of Protective Structures, John Ross Childress Jan 1970

A Proposed Concept For The Rapid Field Design Of Protective Structures, John Ross Childress

Masters Theses

"This investigation proposes a simplified concept for the rapid field design of protective structures, subject to attack by conventional artillery rounds, mortar rounds and small rockets. Parameters which should be considered during a rigorous design process are discussed. The number and complexity of these parameters make the rigorous design procedure too unwieldy to be efficiently used, in a limited time period, when materials are not available to comply with Standard Designs. Since the duration of an explosion pulse is very short and uncompacted soil is capable of absorbing explosive energy, this study investigates the theory that adequate protection can be …

Recovery Of Trace Organic Pollutants By Solvent Extraction And Freeze Concentration, William Chih-Wen Chang Jan 1970

Recovery Of Trace Organic Pollutants By Solvent Extraction And Freeze Concentration, William Chih-Wen Chang

Masters Theses

"The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the use of batch type solvent extraction and freeze concentration in recovering trace organic pollutants from water. The work was performed using a simplified water system containing known concentrations of phenol, and natural water systems collected from three sources (Meramec Spring, Gasconade River near Jerome, and Missouri River in Jefferson City) with different levels of pollution. The simplified water system was used to evaluate the effect of the number of extractions, solvent to sample ratio, extraction time, initial organic concentration, pH, and turbidity on solvent extraction; and the effect of volumetric concentration …

Optumr A Digital Computer Program To Cost Optimize A District Heat Piping Network To Remove Waste Heat From Nuclear Power Reactors, James Richard Hendricks

Masters Theses

"The thermal pollution problem of a nuclear reactor electrical generating facility can be eliminated if an economical, productive use for the waste heat can be found. The computer program presented here is designed to investigate the economic feasibility of utilizing this waste heat to heat buildings. The program optimizes a district heating network using the reactor's rejected heat and performs a comparative analysis with a selected conventional heat rejection system. The results indicate that the system is feasible only if the reactor can be sited relatively close (5 miles) to an urban center. Increasing national concern regarding thermal pollution and …

Light Scattering As A Means Of Probing Particulate Systems, Arwind Krishna Gore Jan 1970

Light Scattering As A Means Of Probing Particulate Systems, Arwind Krishna Gore

Masters Theses

"The primary purpose of this investigation is to provide basic data needed in determining the size distribution of water-droplets in cloud chambers, sprays, dust clouds, etc. A critique of the classical Mie scattering theory is made to evaluate the influence of the properties such as size, shape and refractive index and of the particulate concentration on the scattering functions. Using He-Ne gas laser radiation of 6328 Å wavelength as the source, the angular intensity functions are tabulated for water-drops up to 20 microns in diameter, dispersed in air at 25ºC. A size interval of 0.2 microns and an angular interval …

"Wastewater stabilization lagoons have recently become a popular and efficient method of sewage stabilization in many parts of the country. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of added solid-liquid interfacial area on the treatment capabilities of simulated wastewater stabilization lagoons. The simulated lagoons consisted of six -15 gallon aquariums which were operated in the laboratory. The solid-liquid interfacial area was increased in four of these lagoons by suspending plastic panels in the aquariums. The lagoons were operated for a period of approximately two and a half months using dehydrated milk as a simulated waste substrate. During …

A Digital Simulation For Optimum Nonlinear Detection Of Binary Signals In Impulsive Noise, Ralph Bernard Fluchel Jan 1970

A Digital Simulation For Optimum Nonlinear Detection Of Binary Signals In Impulsive Noise, Ralph Bernard Fluchel

Masters Theses

"The problem of reducing the effects of impulsive noise on binary communication systems is considered. A digital simulation of such a system is developed in order to find a nearly optimum (minimum probability of error criterion) nonlinear device to precede detection. The level of the Gaussian noise power is found to be the most important parameter for determining the nearly optimum nonlinear device"--Abstract, page ii.

Efficiency And Loss Mechanism Of The Electro-Fluid Dynamic Momentum Transfer Process Applied To Propulsion Systems Using Atmospheric Air As The Working Fluid, Roger Coy Crites Jan 1970

Efficiency And Loss Mechanism Of The Electro-Fluid Dynamic Momentum Transfer Process Applied To Propulsion Systems Using Atmospheric Air As The Working Fluid, Roger Coy Crites

Masters Theses

"The general equations governing EFD (electrofluid dynamic) flow are established, simplified, and solved in closed form to provide a mathematical model of an ideal EFD propulsion system. This mathematical model, in conjunction with an analysis of ion-neutral and neutral-neutral molecular collision phenomena, indicates that the cause of inefficiency in the EFD propulsion system is the system entropy increase associated with the diffusion of ion momentum through the neutral fluid. This loss mechanism is shown to be analogous to resistive heating losses in a constant voltage linear electrical network and can be minimized by obtaining minimum ion mobility. It is shown …

Mutually Dependent Heat And Mass Transfer In Laminar Tube Flow, Gary Alfred Scheffel Jan 1970

Mutually Dependent Heat And Mass Transfer In Laminar Tube Flow, Gary Alfred Scheffel

Masters Theses

"An investigation is performed of the mutually dependent heat and mass transfer in laminar and hydrodynamically fully developed gas flow in a tube. Sublimation of mass occurs at the tube wall so that heat and mass transfer take place between the wall and the flowing gas stream. The wall of the tube is thermally insulated from the external environment with the result that the heat of sublimation is supplied by convective transport from the gas. The solution of this problem requires the simultaneous consideration of the energy and diffusion equations, with coupling provided by the boundary conditions. Mathematical expressions are …

Heat Transfer Through A Spherical Gas Shell, Adel Nassif Saad Jan 1970

Heat Transfer Through A Spherical Gas Shell, Adel Nassif Saad

Masters Theses

"The radiative transfer through an absorbing-emitting gas shell contained within black concentric spheres at uniform but different temperatures was investigated. A close form exact solution and an approximate solution were derived for the case of isothermal gas layer. The two solutions appear to compare well specially at low diameter ratios, and both agree with the radiative equilibrium solution in the thin limit. An approximate method was developed for the radiative equilibrium, non-isothermal gas layer, of the above problem. The method is based on the assumption of a hyperbolic emissive power distribution through the gas shell. The jump boundary conditions were …
