Enhancing Progressive Collapse Resistance Of Steel Building Frames Using Thin Infill Steel Panels, Victor M. Sanchez Escalera May 2011

Enhancing Progressive Collapse Resistance Of Steel Building Frames Using Thin Infill Steel Panels, Victor M. Sanchez Escalera

Master's Theses

Progressive collapse occurs when damage from a localized first failure spreads in a domino effect manner resulting in a total damage disproportionate to the initial failure.  Recent building failures (e.g., World Trade Center twin towers) highlight the catastrophic outcome of progressive collapse.  This research proposes a reliable and realistic retrofit technology which installs thin steel panels into steel building structural frames to enhance the system progressive collapse resistance.

The steel frames with simple beam-to-column connections, under different boundary conditions (i.e., sidesway uninhibited and sidesway inhibited, respectively), and the loss of one bottom story column were retrofitted using the proposed technology …

Simulation And Validation Of Two-Component Flow In A Void Recirculation System, Oscar Eduardo Daza May 2011

Simulation And Validation Of Two-Component Flow In A Void Recirculation System, Oscar Eduardo Daza

Master's Theses

Nuclear power plants rely on the Emergency Core Cooling System (ECCS) to cool down the reactor core in case of an accident. Occasionally, air is entrained into the suction piping of ECCS causing voids that decrease pumping efficiency, and consequently damage the pumps. In an attempt to minimize the amount of voids entering the suction side of the pump in ECCS, a Void Recirculation System (VRS) experiment was conducted for a proof of concept purpose. While many studies have been oriented in studying two-component flow behavior in ECCS, none of them propose a solution to minimize air entrainment. As a …

Energy Harvesting From Elliptical Machines Using Four-Switch Buck-Boost Topology, Alvin Jay Hilario May 2011

Energy Harvesting From Elliptical Machines Using Four-Switch Buck-Boost Topology, Alvin Jay Hilario

Master's Theses

This thesis presents the topic of using the Four-Switch Buck-Boost topology as a DC-DC converter for the Energy Harvesting from Elliptical Machines Project. The project works toward providing a modular synchronous power generation system. Due to the dynamic and sporadic output voltage and power characteristics of the Precor elliptical machine, the system requires a DC-DC converter as a voltage preregulator. The inherent wide input range, high efficiency, and low parts cost of this converter well suit the application. This paper further discusses other topologies and their shortcomings, as well as characterizes the Precor elliptical machine and Enphase Microinverter for interfacing. …

Investigation Of A Simulated Annealing Cooling Schedule Used To Optimize The Estimation Of The Fiber Diameter Distribution In A Peripheral Nerve Trunk, Arya Vigeh May 2011

Investigation Of A Simulated Annealing Cooling Schedule Used To Optimize The Estimation Of The Fiber Diameter Distribution In A Peripheral Nerve Trunk, Arya Vigeh

Master's Theses

In previous studies it was determined that the fiber diameter distribution in a peripheral nerve could be estimated by a simulation technique known as group delay. These results could be further improved using a combinatorial optimization algorithm called simulated annealing. This paper explores the structure and behavior of simulated annealing for the application of optimizing the group delay estimated fiber diameter distribution. Specifically, a set of parameters known as the cooling schedule is investigated to determine its effectiveness in the optimization process.

Simulated annealing is a technique for finding the global minimum (or maximum) of a cost function which may …

Semiconductor Laser Device-Level Characteristics, Clement K. Law

Master's Theses

High-speed modulations of the semiconductor lasers are highly desirable in cost-effective optical communication systems.  Developing the experimental setups to extract the characteristics of the semiconductor lasers is vital to the future of the optical research projects.  In this thesis, integrated experimental setup designs have been developed to measure the characteristics of the Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL), Distributed Feedback (DFB), and Fabry-Pérot (FP) lasers.  The measurements of the DC characteristics are optical power versus drive current (L-I) curves (DFB, VCSEL) and optical spectra (FP, DFB, VCSEL).  In addition, the high-speed optical detection measurement of the optoelectronic frequency responses for …

A Computational Study Of Engine Deflection Using A Circulation Control Wing, Bryan Holly Blessing May 2011

A Computational Study Of Engine Deflection Using A Circulation Control Wing, Bryan Holly Blessing

Master's Theses

In the past, research into Short Takeoff and Landing aircraft has led to the investigation of the coupling of a Circulation Control Wing and Upper Surface Blowing engine. The Circulation Control Wing entrains the flow of the engine to be deflected downward such that a component of the thrust is now in the vertical direction. The unfortunate consequence of the Upper Surface Blowing engine is the poor cruise performance due to scrub drag. Cal Poly's research into a Cruise Efficient Short Takeoff and Landing Aircraft offers a solution by pylon mounting over the wing engines. Analysis shows that the engine …

Master's Theses

High-Frame-Rate Oil Film Interferometry

Jonathan Charles White

This thesis presents the design and implementation of a high-frame-rate oil film interferometry technique (HOFI) used to directly measure skin friction in time dependent flows. Experiments were performed to determine the ability of a high-speed camera to capture oil film interferometry images. HOFI was found to be able to capture these interferometry images at frequencies up to 105 Hz. Steady laminar and turbulent flows were tested. Transient flows tested consisted of a wind tunnel ramping up in velocity and a laminar boundary layer which was intermittently tripped to turbulence by puffing air …

Design And Development Of Two Test Fixtures To Test The Longitudinal And Transverse Tensile Properties Of Small Diameter Tubular Polymers, Carolyn Berry Apr 2011

Design And Development Of Two Test Fixtures To Test The Longitudinal And Transverse Tensile Properties Of Small Diameter Tubular Polymers, Carolyn Berry

Master's Theses

Hundreds of thousands of vascular bypass grafts are implanted in the United States every year, but there has yet to be an ideal graft material to substitute for one’s own autologous vessel. Many synthetic materials have been shown to be successful vessel replacements; however, none have been proven to exhibit the same mechanical properties as native vessels, one of the most important criteria in selecting a vascular graft material. Part of this issue is due to the fact that, currently, there is no “gold standard” for testing the longitudinal and transverse tensile properties of small diameter tubular materials. While there …

Geomagnetic Compensation For Low-Cost Crash Avoidance Project, John C. Torres Apr 2011

Geomagnetic Compensation For Low-Cost Crash Avoidance Project, John C. Torres

Master's Theses

The goal of this work was to compensate for the effects of the Earth’s magnetic field in a vector field magnetic sensor.  The magnetic sensor is a part of a low-cost crash avoidance system by Stephane Roussel where the magnetic sensor was used to detect cars passing when it was mounted to a test vehicle.  However, the magnetic sensor’s output voltage varied when it changed orientation with respect to the Earth’s magnetic field.  This limited the previous work to only analyze detection rates when the test vehicle travelled a single heading.  Since one of the goals of this system is …

Design And Analysis Of A Wind Energy Harvesting Circuit Using Piezoelectric Polymers, Jameson J. Thornton Apr 2011

Design And Analysis Of A Wind Energy Harvesting Circuit Using Piezoelectric Polymers, Jameson J. Thornton

Master's Theses

This thesis investigates a relatively new method for harvesting wind energy by using flexible piezoelectric polymers with additional sails to increase their ability to harvest wind energy. This paper also introduces a new topology deemed the “stacked buck” that allows for multiple inputs to a system with a single output. Derivations and analysis detail the workings of the “stacked buck” with a laboratory test to show a working model. This paper also reports another experiment done in a wind tunnel to analyze the capability of the piezoelectric polymers as sources to the “stacked buck” topology with measurements of the power …

Investigation Of The Behavior Of Free-Standing Gabions In Seismic Regions, Amy Ransom Mar 2011

Investigation Of The Behavior Of Free-Standing Gabions In Seismic Regions, Amy Ransom

Master's Theses

This thesis investigates the behavior of free-standing gabion walls in areas of mild seismicity. To investigate this behavior, three walls of varying internal cable patterns were constructed at a quarter-scale. These walls were tested with a mass shaker, and mode shapes, tone extractions, and damping ratios were calculated. A modal analysis was conducted using design spectra created from a suite of seven earthquakes from countries bordering Kenya. The corresponding lateral forces to these spectral displacements were found, and the restoring eccentricities from the soil restoring force were backed out through a summation of moments. All analysis was experimentally done due …

Asce 7–05 Design Rule For Relative Strength In A Tall Buckling-Restrained Braced Frame Dual System, Lisa J. Aukeman

Master's Theses

In mid- to high-rise structures, dual systems (DS) enable a structural designer to satisfy the stringent drift limitations of current codes without compromising ductility. Currently, ASCE 7-05 permits a variety of structural systems to be used in combination as a dual system yet the design requirements are limited to the following statement: Moment frames must be capable of resisting 25% of the seismic forces while the moment frames and braced frames or shear walls must be capable of resisting the entire seismic forces in proportion to their relative rigidities.

This thesis assesses the significance of the 25% design requirement for …

Probabilistic Fault Displacement Hazard Analysis For Reverse Faults And Surface Rupture Scale Invariance, Zachary E. Ross

Master's Theses

p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'}

A methodology is presented for evaluating the potential surface fault displacement on reverse faults in a probabilistic manner. This methodology follows the procedures put forth for Probabilistic Fault Displacement Hazard Analysis (PFDHA). Empirical probability distributions that are central to performing a PFDHA are derived from field investigations of reverse faulting events. Statistical analyses are used to test previously assumed properties of scale invariance with respect to magnitude for normalized displacement. It is found that normalized displacement is statistically invariant with respect to magnitude and focal mechanism, allowing for the …

The resulting proteoglycan model was combined with a novel collagen fibril model and a ground substance matrix material to create a polyconvex constitutive finite element model of articular cartilage. The true collagen fibril modulus , and the ground substance matrix shear modulus , were varied to obtain the best fit to experimental tension, confined compression, and unconfined compression data for native explants and explants cultured in insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1).  Results indicate …

The State Of Software Engineering Maturity And Licensure, Travis Lawrence Dean Mar 2011

The State Of Software Engineering Maturity And Licensure, Travis Lawrence Dean

Master's Theses

IEEE-CS is pursuing licensing for software engineers, but ACM believes that software engineering is too immature, and regulating the profession would be premature. In 1996, Norman Gibbs and Gary Ford from Carnegie Mellon University performed a qualitative survey of the maturity of the software engineering profession. I apply this model to the present state of the art in software engineering and analyze the results for 2010. I analyze the maturity of software engineering to determine that the profession is not yet ready for licensure. This is not because the infrastructure of software engineering is too immature, but because we have …

Integration Of Aeroservoelastic Properties Into The Nasa Dryden F/A-18 Simulator Using Flight Data From The Active Aeroelastic Wing Program, Alexander Wong Chin Mar 2011

Integration Of Aeroservoelastic Properties Into The Nasa Dryden F/A-18 Simulator Using Flight Data From The Active Aeroelastic Wing Program, Alexander Wong Chin

Master's Theses

Aircraft structures have varying stiffness levels making them flexible. Consequently, this elastic property becomes increasingly important at high speeds affecting the flight dynamics of the aircraft.  In high speed aircraft such as the F/A-18, elastic structural properties must be accounted for to ensure confidence in predicted flight dynamics in order to avoid adverse aeroelastic phenomena throughout flight.

Data from the F/A-18 Active Aeroelastic Wing (AAW) program was used to create aeroservoelastic (ASE) models at varying flight conditions. The discretized ASE models were integrated into the NASA Dryden F/A-18 simulator in parallel with the traditional 6-DOF (degrees-of-freedom) flight dynamics calculations to …
