Design And Simulation Of Passive Thermal Management System For Lithium-Ion Battery Packs On An Unmanned Ground Vehicle, Kevin Kenneth Parsons
Master's Theses
The transient thermal response of a 15-cell, 48 volt, lithium-ion battery pack for an unmanned ground vehicle was simulated with ANSYS Fluent. Heat generation rates and specific heat capacity of a single cell were experimentally measured and used as input to the thermal model. A heat generation load was applied to each battery and natural convection film boundary conditions were applied to the exterior of the enclosure. The buoyancy-driven natural convection inside the enclosure was modeled along with the radiation heat transfer between internal components. The maximum temperature of the batteries reached 65.6 °C after 630 seconds of usage …

Determination Of Human Powered Helicopter Stability Characteristics Using Multi-Body System Simulation Techniques, Sean M. Brown
Master's Theses
Multi-Body System Simulation combined with System Identification was developed as a method for determining the stability characteristics of a human powered helicopter(HPH) configurations. HPH stability remains a key component for meeting competition requirements, but has not been properly treated. Traditional helicopter dynamic analysis is not suited to the HPH due to its low rotation speeds and light weight. Multi-Body System Simulation is able to generate dynamic response data for any HPH configuration. System identification and linear stability theory are used to determine the stability characteristics from the dynamic response. This thesis focuses on the method development and doesn't present any …

The appropriate selection of failure criterion for solder joint studies is necessary to correctly estimate reliability life. The objective of this study is to compare the effect of different failure criteria on the reliability life estimation. The four failure criteria in this study are a 20% resistance increase defined in the IPC-9701A standard, a resistance beyond 500 Ω, an infinite resistance (hard open), and a failure criterion based on X-bar and R control charts. Accelerated thermal cycling conditions of a low-silver BGA study included 0°C to 100 °C with ten minute dwell times and -40°C to 125°C with ten minute …
Constant Conduction Angle Biasing For Class C Monolithic Rf Power Amplifiers, Gursewak Singh Rai
Constant Conduction Angle Biasing For Class C Monolithic Rf Power Amplifiers, Gursewak Singh Rai
Master's Theses
In modern wireless communication systems, a base station typically serves a few hundred users within its cell coverage. To combat the near-far problem – the situation where a nearby user’s strong cellular signal masks the cellular signal of a faraway user – base stations continually enforce power control. That is, nearby users must lower their transmit power. In CDMA technology, power control can be as large as 70-80dB. At low power outputs, this greatly impacts the performance of the RF power amplifier (PA) in the cellular device. For small RF drives, the magnitude of the output RF current approaches the …
Fault Mapping With The Refraction Microtremor And Seismic Refraction Methods Along The Los Osos Fault Zone, Justin Riley Martos
Fault Mapping With The Refraction Microtremor And Seismic Refraction Methods Along The Los Osos Fault Zone, Justin Riley Martos
Master's Theses
The presence of active fault traces in proximity to any new infrastructure project is a major concern for the design process. The relative displacements that can be experienced in surface fault rupture during a seismic event must be either entirely avoided or mitigated in some way. Blind faults present a significant challenge to engineers attempting to identify these hazards. Current standards of practice employed to locate these features are time consuming and costly. This work investigates the geophysical methods of refraction microtremor (ReMi) and seismic refraction with regard to their applicability in this task. By imaging a distinct lateral variation …

Mechanical Optimization And Buckling Analysis Of Bio-Composites, Cameron D. Chan
Master's Theses
Today’s environmental concerns have led a renewed search in industry to find new sustainable materials to replace non-renewable resources. President Barack Obama also quoted in the recent 2012 Presidential Debate “that there is a need to build the energy sources of the future and invest in solar, wind, and bio-fuels.” Bio-composites are believed to be the future and the new substitute for non-renewable resources. Bio-composites are similar to composites in that they are made up of two constituent materials; however the main difference is that bio-composites are made from natural fibers and a biopolymer matrix. This research investigates the buckling …

The impedance measurements are complex quantities (having both a resistive and a reactive component) and are made …
Finite Element Model Updating For Rotary Machinery, Nathalie Gotin
Finite Element Model Updating For Rotary Machinery, Nathalie Gotin
Master's Theses
The main approach of this thesis was to develop a mathematical model that represents a rotary machine. Experimental data was used to define a finite element model (FEM). In order to obtain the experimental data, the rotary machine had to be balanced. An impact hammer test made it possible to obtain frequency response functions (FRF). The frequency response functions were curvefitted in order to obtain the mode shapes and natural frequencies.
Mathematical models have been created with ABAQUS and Matlab. For the Matlab Model the assumption has been made that the rotor machine consists of a specific number of beam …

Efficient Algorithms For Improving The Accuracy In Motifs Prediction, Jerlin C. Merlin
Efficient Algorithms For Improving The Accuracy In Motifs Prediction, Jerlin C. Merlin
Master's Theses
Analysis of sequence homology has always played a major role in the understanding of biological factors such as protein domain identification, gene product relationships, and gene function determination. Short contiguous protein sequences that are conserved across proteins provide important information about such factors, and are of at most 15 residues in length. These segments of proteins are known as minimotifs. Identifying minimotifs has been of much use in the formulation of the hypothesis about the biological functions that otherwise might be uncharacterized. Mechanisms of motif predictions such as Minimotif Miner are widely used for predicting minimotifs. However, due to the …
Hydrodynamic Focused Passive Separation Under Continuous Flow In A Microfluidic Chip, Jad Kanbar
Hydrodynamic Focused Passive Separation Under Continuous Flow In A Microfluidic Chip, Jad Kanbar
Master's Theses
A continuous flow, passive separation device was designed using an equivalent circuit to create variable flow rates for hydrodynamic focusing to drain channels and collection outlets. By varying the diameter of the sample inlet connection into the reservoir, the particle position was influenced significantly, which enabled desired separations. Additionally it was noted that the relative, horizontal position of the inlet also had a significant influence on particle position within the device. A dimensionless number, the Characteristic Sample Inlet, was developed to relate geometric properties of the inlet reservoir to downstream particle distribution. It was found that a 2:1 ratio between …

Optimal Slewing Of A Constrained Telescope Using Seventh Order Polynomial Input Torques, Julia K. Bush
Master's Theses
Two-axis gimbals are frequently used to point cameras and telescopes at various points of interest for surveillance, science, and art. The rotation of a two-axis gimbal system is governed by nonlinear angular momentum equations of motion. This paper presents a method for slewing a telescope in space with a gimbaled sensor attached to a nominally non-rotating spacecraft using two seventh order polynomial input functions to characterize torques. To accomplish this task, picking the optimal coefficients of the seventh order polynomial was necessary. It was also desired to use constraint equations to limit the excursion, angular velocity, angular acceleration, and jerk …

Identification Of Orbital Objects By Spectral Analysis And Observation Of Space Environment Effects, Jason B. Rapp
Master's Theses
This report presents an investigation and development of the methods for orbital object identification. Two goals were accomplished in this master’s thesis; the development of a method of inverting material proportions from an object’s combined spectrum, and the investigation of methods and initialization of measurement of space environment effects on spectral features of common spacecraft materials. A constrained least squares approach was chosen for inverting spectral proportions from the combined spectra. The final results fall within 1 - 15% of the original spectrum, depending on the quality and noise levels of the original spectrum. Additionally, the effects of outgassing and …

Analysis Of A Goldschmied Propulsor Using Computational Fluid Dynamics Referencing California Polytechnic's Goldschmied Propulsor Testing, Cory A. Seubert
Master's Theses
The Goldschmied Propulsor is a concept that was introduced in mid 1950's by Fabio Goldschmied. The concept combines boundary layer suction and boundary layer ingestion technologies to reduce drag and increase propulsor efficiency. The most recent testing, done in 1982, left questions concerning the validity of the results. To answer these questions a 38.5in Goldschmied Propulsor was constructed and tested in Cal Poly's 3x4ft wind tunnel. The focus of their wind tunnel investigation was to replicate Goldschmied's original testing and increase the knowledge base on the subject. The goal of this research was to create a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) …

An Alternative Dual-Launch Architecture For A Crewed Asteroid Mission, Steven M. Korn
Master's Theses
This thesis is a feasibility study for a crewed mission to a Near Earth Asteroid (NEA). An alternate dual-launch architecture is proposed and analyzed against a more established architecture. Instead of a rendezvous in a low-Earth parking orbit, the new architecture performs the rendezvous while the two spacecraft are on an Earth-escape trajectory to the destination NEA. After selecting a target asteroid, 2000 SG344, each architecture will have its best mission compared to the best mission of the other architecture.
Using the new architecture, a mission is created to the chosen NEA, 2000 SG344. A back-up Orion MPCV and a …

Using Nwp Analysis In Satellite Rainfall Estimation Of Heavy Precipitation Events Over Complex Terrain, Xinxuan Zhang
Master's Theses
This study investigates the use of Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) high-resolution storm analysis in satellite rainfall estimation over complex terrains. Rainfall estimation here is based on the NOAA-Climate Prediction Center morphing (CMORPH) product. Specifically, CMORPH rainfall is adjusted by applying a power-law function whose parameter values are obtained from the comparison between WRF and CMORPH hourly rain rates. Results are presented based on the analyses of five storm cases that induced catastrophic floods in southern Europe. The WRF-based adjusted CMORPH rain rates exhibited improved error statistics against independent radar-rainfall estimates. We show that the adjustment reduces the underestimation of …
The Role Of Transport Phenomena In The Direct Oxidation Of Solid Fuels, Charles J. Banas
The Role Of Transport Phenomena In The Direct Oxidation Of Solid Fuels, Charles J. Banas
Master's Theses
Direct carbon fuel cells have shown promise for stationary power generation by utilizing the direct oxidation of a solid carbon fuel source at the anode. In laboratory settings, researchers have reported up to 300mA/cm2 of current density from these cells types which suffer from mass transport losses. This paper studies the surface properties of the solid fuel source, and describes the process of CO2 evolution through an analogy to pool boiling. In nucleate boiling (a subset of pool boiling) vapor bubbles grow from nucleation sites where gas are trapped in micro-cavities on the surface. Carbon surfaces possess these same features, …

The Effects Of Bolt Pretension, In-Plane Eccentricity, And Friction On The Ductility Of Block Shear Connections, Kevin M. Zmetra
The Effects Of Bolt Pretension, In-Plane Eccentricity, And Friction On The Ductility Of Block Shear Connections, Kevin M. Zmetra
Master's Theses
Block shear is a complex failure mechanism in bolted and welded steel components such as gusset plates, webs of coped beams, angles and tees. It presumes a combination of tension rupture and shear yield. Multiple variables affect the block shear capacity and ductility of a connection. This study investigates the effects of bolt pretension, connection eccentricity and friction force transfer through a series of destructive experiments followed by refined finite element simulation. Clamping forces create a complex triaxial stress field compounded by the stress concentration at the bolt holes. In-plane load eccentricity with respect to the centerline of the connection …
Active Storage And Ssd Caching In An Object Storage Environment, Michael T. Runde
Active Storage And Ssd Caching In An Object Storage Environment, Michael T. Runde
Master's Theses
The advancing performance and lowering costs required to implement additional processing power on system peripherals such as disk drives are increasingly allowing additional computing ability to be located directly on individual drives. Active Storage attempts to take advantage of this excess by moving some computationally intensive applications directly to the disk drives. This can remove the bottlenecks seen through interconnects between the drives and the CPU of an initiating system as well as remove the need for systems to handle these applications.
The contributions of this thesis are in two areas. The first is the development of a framework designed …
Efficient Characterization Of Structural Dynamic Responses Under Uncertainties: From Order-Reduced Simulation To Data-Driven Emulation, Zeping Xia
Master's Theses
The efficiency of sampling remains as one of the major challenges for uncertainty analysis in structural dynamics. In the context of numerical experiments, this difficulty primarily lies in the fact that every single run of a numerical model, which usually is of large scale in modern engineering practice, would be expensive in terms of CPU times and memories. Nonetheless, understanding and predicting dynamic characteristics of structural systems with uncertainties is important for structural design, assessment and control. In order to develop fast and economical sampling techniques for characterizing structural dynamics, we explored two categories of methods from two opposite direction: …
Impact Of Salt On Denitrification Potential In Roadside Environments, Nakita A. Lancaster
Impact Of Salt On Denitrification Potential In Roadside Environments, Nakita A. Lancaster
Master's Theses
Urban systems are impacted by changes in hydrology and water chemistry, altering their ability to mitigate detrimental impacts to coastal water bodies, particularly those that result from high volumes of stormwater runoff. The elevated level of impervious cover increases not only runoff but also contaminant loading of nutrients, metals, and road salt used for deicing in cold weather climates. Current stormwater management strategies, while focused on managing the changes in hydrology associated with urbanization, also are designed to mitigate the pollutant loading. Here we investigate the impact that road salt will have on nitrogen removal in roadside environments. Sediments were …

Static Balancing Of The Cal Poly Wind Turbine Rotor, Derek Simon
Master's Theses
The balancing of a wind turbine rotor is a crucial step affecting the machine’s performance, reliability, and safety, as it directly impacts the dynamic loads on the entire structure.
A rotor can be balanced either statically or dynamically. A method of rotor balancing was developed that achieves both the simplicity of static balancing and the accuracy of dynamic balancing. This method is best suited, but not limited, to hollow composite blades of any size. The method starts by quantifying the mass and center of gravity of each blade. A dynamic calculation is performed to determine the theoretical shaking force on …
