Discrete-Time Ripple Correlation Control For Maximum Power Point Tracking, Jonathan W. Kimball, Philip T. Krein Sep 2008

Discrete-Time Ripple Correlation Control For Maximum Power Point Tracking, Jonathan W. Kimball, Philip T. Krein

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Ripple correlation control (RCC) is a high-performance real-time optimization technique that has been applied to photovoltaic maximum power point tracking. This paper extends the previous analog technique to the digital domain. The proposed digital implementation is less expensive, more flexible, and more robust. with a few simplifications, the RCC method is reduced to a sampling problem; that is, if the appropriate variables are sampled at the correct times, the discrete-time RCC (DRCC) algorithm can quickly find the optimal operating point. First, the general DRCC method is derived and stability is proven. Then, DRCC is applied to the photovoltaic maximum power …

Empirical Study Of A Hybrid Algorithm Based On Clonal Selection And Small Population Based Pso., Pinaki Mitra, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a hybrid algorithm, based on clonal selection algorithm (CSA) and small population based particle swarm optimization (SPPSO) is introduced. The performance of this new algorithm (CS2P2SO) is observed for four well known benchmark functions. The SPPSO is a variant of conventional PSO (CPSO), introduced by the second author of this paper, where a very small number of initial particles are used and after a few iterations, the best particle is kept and the rest are replaced by the same number of regenerated particles. On the other hand, CSA belongs to the family of artificial immune system (AIS). …

Optimal Energy-Delay Routing Protocol With Trust Levels For Wireless Ad Hoc Networks, Eyad Taqieddin, Ann K. Miller, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents the Trust Level Routing (TLR) pro- tocol, an extension of the optimized energy-delay rout- ing (OEDR) protocol, focusing on the integrity, reliability and survivability of the wireless network. TLR is similar to OEDR in that they both are link state routing proto- cols that run in a proactive mode and adopt the concept of multi-point relay (MPR) nodes. However, TLR aims at incorporating trust levels into routing by frequently changing the MPR nodes as well as authenticating the source node and contents of control packets. TLR calcu- lates the link costs based on a composite metric (delay …

Study On The Effects Of Battery Capacity On The Performance Of Hybrid Electric Vehicles, Deepak Somayajula, Andrew Meintz, Mehdi Ferdowsi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Hybrid electric vehicles are gaining a significant presence in the auto market. However, the present day hybrid electric vehicles mostly use battery as a secondary source of power. If the battery were to be used as a primary source of power then the battery capacity is one of the important features in the design of a hybrid electric vehicle. Hybrid electric vehicles which are powered by more than one energy source have to follow a good energy management strategy to provide the best fuel economy in all situations. This paper presents a comprehensive study of the effect of variation of …

Bio-Inspired Algorithms For The Design Of Multiple Optimal Power System Stabilizers: Sppso And Bfa, Tridib Kumar Das, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Usman O. Aliyu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Damping intra-area and interarea oscillations are critical to optimal power flow and stability in a power system. Power system stabilizers (PSSs) are effective damping devices, as they provide auxiliary control signals to the excitation systems of generators. The proper selection of PSS parameters to accommodate variations in the power system dynamics is important and is a challenging task particularly when several PSSs are involved. Two classical bio-inspired algorithms, which are smallpopulation- based particle swarm optimization (SPPSO) and bacterial foraging algorithm (BFA), are presented in this paper for the simultaneous design of multiple optimal PSSs in two power systems. A classical …

Evaluating Performance Tradeoff In Defect-Tolerant Gate Programming Techniques For The Clock-Free Nanowire Crossbar Architecture, Minsu Choi, Ravi Bonam

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel asynchronous nanowire crossbar architecture has been recently proposed by authors' research group. The proposed clock-free architecture provides numerous significant benefits over its clocked counterparts which include better manufacturability, scalability, modularity and robustness. We also proposed various gate mapping and reconfiguration algorithms for defect-tolerant programming of PGMB (programmable gate macro blocks) - which is the primary building block of the proposed architecture. These algorithms were tested by simulations and a variety of parameter values were applied to show their performance characteristics. The most important performance metric of the proposed techniques is the programmability (i.e., the ratio of successfully programmed …

Link Path Design On A Block-By-Block Basis, Francesco De Paulis, Jun Fan, Jay Diepenbrock, Samuel Connor, Antonio Orlandi, Bruce Archambeault

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In high-speed data communication systems, the complexity of link path between transmitters and receivers present a challenge for designers to maintain an acceptable bit error rate. An approach is presented in this paper to design the link path on a block-by-block basis. The unique advantage of this approach lies on the physics-based model of each block, which relates performance to geometry and makes design improvement and optimization possible. An example link path involving a backpanel is investigated using the approach. The via stubs and the dielectric materials in the backpanel are demonstrated to be critical factors for link performance in …

Reinforcement Learning Based Dual-Control Methodology For Complex Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems With Application To Spark Engine Egr Operation, Peter Shih, Brian C. Kaul, Jagannathan Sarangapani, J. A. Drallmeier

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel reinforcement-learning-based dual-control methodology adaptive neural network (NN) controller is developed to deliver a desired tracking performance for a class of complex feedback nonlinear discrete-time systems, which consists of a second-order nonlinear discrete-time system in nonstrict feedback form and an affine nonlinear discrete-time system, in the presence of bounded and unknown disturbances. For example, the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) operation of a spark ignition (SI) engine is modeled by using such a complex nonlinear discrete-time system. A dual-controller approach is undertaken where primary adaptive critic NN controller is designed for the nonstrict feedback nonlinear discrete-time system whereas the secondary …

Time Synchronized Near-Field And Far-Field For Emi Source Identification, Gang Feng, Wei Wu, David Pommerenke, Jun Fan, Daryl G. Beetner

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The evaluation of a product in terms of radiated emissions involves identifying the noise sources. Spectrum analyzer (SA) measurements alone are unable to identify noise sources when multiple sources are responsible for emissions at a particular frequency. In this paper, an approach using combined near-field and far-field measurements is proposed. This method consists of recording signals from a near field probe and from an antenna in the far-field using a high speed oscilloscope and analyzing the relationship between them via different post processing methods. The noise source can be identified by varying the location of near-field probe and searching for …

The Influence Of Test Parameters On Tem Cell Measurements Of Ics, Vijay Kasturi, Daryl G. Beetner Aug 2008

The Influence Of Test Parameters On Tem Cell Measurements Of Ics, Vijay Kasturi, Daryl G. Beetner

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The IEC 61967-2 TEM cell standard allows for variations in test parameters which may cause variations in the measured emissions from integrated circuits (ICs). To test the impact of these parameters, two printed circuit boards were designed within the IEC standard using "poor" PCB design strategies and using "good" design strategies. Emissions from three pin-for-pin compatible 8051 microcontrollers were tested. Emissions were measured using both PCBs, changing the PCB configuration, and changing test parameters like the program running on the IC, the rise time of the input clock, and I/O switching. Emissions from the "poor" PCB were about 3-8 dB …

Using Twdp To Quantify Channel Performance With Frequency-Domain S-Parameter Data, Surbhi Mittal, Zhiping Yang, Jun Fan, Francesco De Paulis Aug 2008

Using Twdp To Quantify Channel Performance With Frequency-Domain S-Parameter Data, Surbhi Mittal, Zhiping Yang, Jun Fan, Francesco De Paulis

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents an approach to quantify channel performance using TWDP (Transmitter Waveform and Dispersion Penalty) with frequency-domain S-parameter data. TWDP is initially defined to characterize the performance of a transmitter in optical links. The same concept has been extended to quantify channel performance as well, especially in high-speed copper links. This paper focuses on channel characterization. Instead of using time-domain oscilloscope measurements as defined in the original approach, a new method is proposed by using the frequency-domain S-parameter data, obtained either from measurements or simulations. A parametric study on TWDP with respect to bit rate, number of samples per …

Advanced Full Wave Esd Generator Model For System Level Coupling Simulation, Qing Cai, Argha Nandy, David Pommerenke, Jong-Sung Lee, Byong-Su Seol, Jayong Koo

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

System level ESD tests can only be performed after hardware is available. Simulating the ESD coupling into a circuit allows at least parametric and quantitative studies of the expected ESD behavior. A complete simulation requires us to model the ESD generator, the passive elements of the DUT and the response of the ICs to injected noise. Having the ultimate objective of combining IC soft error response models with the DUT structure and the ESD generator we report on progresses in modeling the ESD generator and its coupling. The model improves the useful frequency range from a few hundred MHz to …

A Bist Approach For Configurable Nanofabric Arrays, Mandar V. Joshi, Waleed K. Al-Assadi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This work proposes a Built-in Self Test (BIST) approach to test crossbars for a defined set of faults. The BIST can classify the different programmable elements in the crossbars as non-defective or defective with a certain fault type. The logic synthesis can then configure the crossbar by avoiding these defective elements.

Closed-Form Expressions For Determining Approximate Pmc Boundaries Around An Aperture In A Metal Cavity Wall, Francesco De Paulis, Yaojiang Zhang, Jun Fan, Jason A. Mix, Xiaopeng Dong, Daniel Hua, Kevin P. Slattery

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Modern electronic systems may use mixed RF/digital technologies to achieve various functionalities, which leads to various intra-system interference problems including the RF interference from noisy digital circuits to sensitive RF receivers, especially when the overall system is contained in a metal enclosure. A fast method based on a cavity formulation can be used to estimate the internal noise coupling mechanisms inside the enclosure. This method assumes that only the TMz0 mode exists inside the enclosure, i.e., the electric field along the z-direction is constant. The cavity formulation fails in the region adjacent to an aperture in an enclosure wall, since …

Comparison Of Adaptive Critic-Based And Classical Wide-Area Controllers For Power Systems, Swakshar Ray, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Balarko Chaudhuri, Rajat Majumder

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An adaptive critic design (ACD)-based damping controller is developed for a thyristor-controlled series capacitor (TCSC) installed in a power system with multiple poorly damped interarea modes. The performance of this ACD computational intelligence-based method is compared with two classical techniques, which are observer-based state-feedback (SF) control and linear matrix inequality $hbox{LMI-H}^{infty}$ robust control. Remote measurements are used as feedback signals to the wide-area damping controller for modulating the compensation of the TCSC. The classical methods use a linearized model of the system whereas the ACD method is purely measurement-based, leading to a nonlinear controller with fixed parameters. A comparative analysis …

The Repeatability Of System Level Esd Test And Relevant Esd Generator Parameters, Jayong Koo, Qing Cai, David Pommerenke, Kai Wang, John Mass, Masayuki Hirata, Andrew Martwick

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Some system level ESD tests do not repeat well if different ESD generators are used. For improving the test repeatability, ESD generator specifications were considered to be changed and a world wide Round Robin test were performed in 2006 to compare the modified and unmodified ESD generators. The test results show the failure level variations up to 1:3 for an EUT among eight different ESD generators. Multiple ESD parameters including discharge currents and transient fields have been measured. This paper tries to find which parameters would predict the failure level the best in general. The transient fields show large variations …

Post-Configuration Testing Of Asynchronous Nanowire Crossbar Architecture, Sriram Venkateswaran, Minsu Choi Aug 2008

Post-Configuration Testing Of Asynchronous Nanowire Crossbar Architecture, Sriram Venkateswaran, Minsu Choi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An asynchronous nanowire crossbar architecture has been recently proposed to eliminate the clock distribution network from conventional clocked counterpart. The proposed clock-free architecture is envisioned to enhance the manufacturability with simpler periodic structure and to improve the robustness by removing various timing-related failure modes. Even though the proposed clock-free architecture has numerous merits over its clocked counterpart, it is still not free from high defect rates induced by nondeterministic nanoscale assembly. In order to address this issue, our research team has been working on developing test schemes for effective mapping of threshold gates onto programmable gate macro blocks (PGMB). We …

Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman Equations And Approximate Dynamic Programming On Time Scales, John E. Seiffertt Iv, Suman Sanyal, Donald C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The time scales calculus is a key emerging area of mathematics due to its potential use in a wide variety of multidisciplinary applications. We extend this calculus to approximate dynamic programming (ADP). The core backward induction algorithm of dynamic programming is extended from its traditional discrete case to all isolated time scales. Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations, the solution of which is the fundamental problem in the field of dynamic programming, are motivated and proven on time scales. By drawing together the calculus of time scales and the applied area of stochastic control via ADP, we have connected two major fields of research.

Control Of Nonaffine Nonlinear Discrete Time Systems Using Reinforcement-Learning-Based Linearly Parameterized Neural Networks, Qinmin Yang, Jonathan B. Vance, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A nonaffine discrete-time system represented by the nonlinear autoregressive moving average with eXogenous input (NARMAX) representation with unknown nonlinear system dynamics is considered. An equivalent affinelike representation in terms of the tracking error dynamics is first obtained from the original nonaffine nonlinear discrete-time system so that reinforcement-learning-based near-optimal neural network (NN) controller can be developed. The control scheme consists of two linearly parameterized NNs. One NN is designated as the critic NN, which approximates a predefined long-term cost function, and an action NN is employed to derive a near-optimal control signal for the system to track a desired trajectory while …

Estimation Of The Statistical Variation Of Crosstalk In Wiring Harnesses, Meilin Wu, Daryl G. Beetner, Todd H. Hubing, Haixin Ke, Shishuang Sun Aug 2008

Estimation Of The Statistical Variation Of Crosstalk In Wiring Harnesses, Meilin Wu, Daryl G. Beetner, Todd H. Hubing, Haixin Ke, Shishuang Sun

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Analyzing interference problems in vehicle wiring harnesses requires fast and accurate methods of approximating crosstalk. Worst-case approximations using lumped element models are fast and easy to use, but run the risk of overestimating problems. Statistical methods that account for the random variation of wire position help prevent overdesign, but are often difficult and time-consuming to apply and lack a clear link between problems and their cause. Here we investigate the use of simple lumped-element models to predict the statistical variation of crosstalk in wire harness bundles. Models are based on lumped-element approximations, where inductance and capacitance values are calculated for …

Aperture Modeling Using A Hybrid Method For Rfi Analysis, Liehui Ren, Zhenwei Yu, Gang Feng, Francesco De Paulis, Yaojiang Zhang, Jun Fan, Xiaopeng Dong, Jason A. Mix, Daniel Hua, Kevin P. Slattery Aug 2008

Aperture Modeling Using A Hybrid Method For Rfi Analysis, Liehui Ren, Zhenwei Yu, Gang Feng, Francesco De Paulis, Yaojiang Zhang, Jun Fan, Xiaopeng Dong, Jason A. Mix, Daniel Hua, Kevin P. Slattery

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A hybrid method is proposed for radio frequency interference (RFI) prediction of a metal enclosure with an aperture on the top wall. The structure is divided into several segments. While the fields in rectangular segments are described by cavity model, the segments with apertures are modeled by the commercial finite element solver (HFSS). Tangential field continuities along the common boundaries of different segments are enforced by the voltages and currents of boundary ports. Good agreement has been achieved between the hybrid method and full wave simulation.

Maximum Likelihood Methods In Biology Revisited With Tools Of Computational Intelligence, John E. Seiffertt Iv, Andrew Vanbrunt, Donald C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate the problem of identification of genes correlated with the occurrence of diseases in a given population. The classical method of parametric linkage analysis is combined with newer tools and results are achieved on a model problem. This traditional method has advantages over non-parametric methods, but these advantages have been difficult to realize due to their high computational cost. We study a class of Evolutionary Algorithms from the Computational Intelligence literature which are designed to cut such costs considerably for optimization problems. We outline the details of this algorithm, called Particle Swarm Optimization, and present all the equations and …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Due to the increase in board density, routing traces on different layers becomes a widely used strategy. Through-hole vias are often used to connect these traces. Those vias that penetrate power/ground plane pairs could cause noise coupling between signal and power/ground nets. At the same time, the need for clean signal transmitted to receivers results in a wide use of differential signals. This paper studies the noise coupling mechanism caused by a differential pair of vias penetrating power/ground plane pair using a physics-based via-plane model combined with transmission line models for traces. A 26-layer printed circuit board with a pair …

Orthogonal Loops Probe Design And Characterization For Near-Field Measurement, Tun Li, Yong Cheh Ho, David Pommerenke

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Near-field probes are often used to measure the electric and magnetic fields above a printed circuit board in order to identify the sources and coupling paths of an electromagnetic interference (EMI) problem. It is the objective of this paper to propose a rapid E-, Hx- Hy- and circular H-fields measurement using an orthogonal loops probe design. The effects of this probe are analyzed using full-wave simulations and measurements.

An effective method for extracting parameters of a Debye or a Lorentzian dispersive medium over a wideband frequency range using a genetic algorithm (GA) and a transmission-line model is presented. Scattering parameters (S-parameters) of the transmission-line sections, including a parallel plate, microstrip, and stripline, are measured. Wave equations for TEM/quasi-TEM mode with a complex propagation constant and a frequency-dependent wave impedance are used to evaluate the corresponding S-parameters in an analytical model. The discrepancy between the modeled and measured S-parameters is defined as the objective function in the GA. The GA is used for search of the dispersive-medium parameters by …

Emi Analysis Methods For Synchronous Buck Converter Emi Root Cause Analysis, David Pommerenke, Robert Steinfeld, Keong W. Kam, Cheung-Wei Lam

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

DC/DC synchronous buck converters cause broadband emissions. A variety of methods are applied to analyze the root cause of the EMI. Time-domain voltage measurement and joint-time-frequency analysis allows to determine the location of the noise source. The near field scan reveals the current paths, and impedance measurement and 3D modeling can be used for further analysis of the noise source. A dual port TEM cell allows to distinguish E from H field coupling, This paper shows the application of those methods to a synchronous buck converter and reveals the sources of EMI leading to advice on the optimal PCB design. …
