Multiple Reference Frame-Based Control Of Three-Phase Pwm Boost Rectifiers Under Unbalanced And Distorted Input Conditions, Peng Xiao, Keith Corzine, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Many control algorithms and circuits for three-phase pulse width modulation active rectifiers have been proposed in the past decades. In most of the research, it is often assumed that the input voltages are balanced or contain only fundamental frequency components. In this paper, a selective harmonic compensation method is proposed based on an improved multiple reference frame algorithm, which decouples signals of different frequencies before reference frame transformation. This technique eliminates interactions between the fundamental-frequency positive-sequence components and harmonic and/or negative-sequence components in the input currents, so that fast and accurate regulation of harmonic and unbalanced currents can be achieved. …

Application Of Statcom For Improved Reliability Of Power Grid Containing A Wind Turbine, Aditya P. Jayam, Badrul H. Chowdhury, Nikhil Kumar Ardeshna

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Larger wind farms when integrated to the power system pose stability and control issues. This paper investigates the use of a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) with wind farms for the purpose of stabilizing the grid voltage after a grid-side disturbance viz., a three phase short circuit fault and load changes. The strategy focuses on a fundamental grid operational requirement to maintain proper voltages at the point of common coupling by regulating the voltage at the collector bus of a wind farm. The DC voltage at individual wind turbine (WT) inverters is also stabilized which facilitates the continuous operation of each …

A Computational Approach To Optimal Damping Controller Design For A Gcsc, Swakshar Ray, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Edson H. Watanabe

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a computational approach for an offline measurement-based design of an optimal damping controller using adaptive critics for a new type of flexible ac transmission system device-the gate-controlled series capacitor (GCSC). Remote measurements are provided to the controller to damp out system modes. The optimal controller is developed based on the heuristic dynamic programming (HDP) approach. Three multilayer-perceptron neural networks are used in the design-the identifier/model network to identify the dynamics of the power system, the critic network to evaluate the performance of the damping controller, and the controller network to provide optimal damping. This measurement-based technique provides …

A Dstatcom Controller Tuned By Particle Swarm Optimization For An Electric Ship Power System, Pinaki Mitra, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In an all-electric ship power system, the power quality problems mainly arise due to the pulsed loads, which cause the degradation of the overall system performance. The paper proposes the application of DSTATCOM to improve these power quality problems of an electric ship. DSTATCOM is a shunt compensation device, which regulates the bus voltage by injecting reactive power during the pulsed load operations. The control strategy of DSTATCOM plays an important role to meet the objectives. The paper proposes a controller design strategy which is based on particle swarm optimization (PSO). PSO, an algorithm that falls into swarm intelligence family, …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Computer-assisted vertebra segmentation in x-ray images is a challenging problem. Inter-subject variability and the generally poor contrast of digitized radiograph images contribute to the segmentation difficulty. In this paper, a semi-automated live wire approach is investigated for vertebrae segmentation. The live wire approach integrates initially selected user points with dynamic programming to generate a closed vertebra boundary. In order to assess the degree to which vertebra features are conserved using the live wire technique, convex hull-based features to characterize anterior osteophytes in lumbar vertebrae are determined for live wire and manually segmented vertebrae. Anterior osteophyte discrimination was performed over 405 …

Frequency Regulation With Wind Power Plants, Badrul H. Chowdhury, Hong Tao Ma

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new frequency regulation scheme is developed for the wind turbine/generator/converter trio that will provide the capability to participate in restoring frequency in a way similar to the droop response of conventional generators. Output active power adjustment can be realized by both converter and pitch angle control in addition to inertial response of the wind turbine. This helps in maintaining instantaneous power balance as well as in longer term frequency regulation.

The goal of optimal generator maintenance scheduling is to evolve optimal preventive maintenance schedule of generating units for economical and reliable operation of a power system while satisfying system load demand and crew constraints. In this paper, the differential evolution (DE), an evolutionary computation algorithm that utilizes the differential information to guide its further search, is applied to effectively solve the generator maintenance scheduling (GMS) optimization problem. The proposed method can handle mixed integer discrete continuous optimization problems. Results are presented with the DE algorithm on two different case studies for Nigerian power system.

Method Of Edge Currents For Calculating Mutual External Inductance In A Microstrip Structure, Marina Koledintseva, James L. Drewniak, Thomas Van Doren, David Pommerenke, Matteo Cocchini, David M. Hockanson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Mutual external inductance (MEI) associated with fringing magnetic fields in planar transmission lines is a cause of socalled "ground plane noise", which leads to radiation from printed circuit boards in high-speed electronic equipment. Herein, a Method of Edge Currents (MEC) is proposed for calculating the MEI associated with fringing magnetic fields that wrap the ground plane of a microstrip line. This method employs a quasi-magnetostatic approach and direct magnetic field integration, so the resultant MEI is frequency independent. It is shown that when infinitely wide ground planes are cut to form ground planes of finite width, the residual surface currents …

Mutual External Inductance In Stripline Structures, Marina Koledintseva, James L. Drewniak, Thomas Van Doren, David Pommerenke, Matteo Cocchini, David M. Hockanson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Method of Edge Currents (MEC) proposed in our previous paper [1] is applied herein for calculating the mutual external inductance associated with fringing magnetic fields that wrap ground planes of a stripline structure. This method employs a quasi-static approach, image theory, and direct magnetic field integration. The resultant mutual external inductance is frequency-independent. The approach has been applied to estimating mutual inductance for both symmetrical and asymmetrical stripline structures. Offset of the signal trace from the centered position both in horizontal and vertical directions is taken into account in asymmetrical structures. The results are compared with numerical simulations using …

The problem of robotic area coverage is applicable to many domains, such as search, agriculture, cleaning, and machine tooling. The robotic area coverage task is concerned with moving a vehicle with an effector, or sensor, through the task space such that the sensor passes over every point in the space. For covering complex areas, back and forth paths are inadequate. This paper presents a real-time path planning architecture consisting of layers of a clustering method to divide and conquer the problem combined with a two layered, global and local optimization method. This architecture is able to optimize the execution of …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Early detection of a tumor's site of origin is particularly important for cancer diagnosis and treatment. The employment of gene expression profiles for different cancer types or subtypes has already shown significant advantages over traditional cancer classification methods. Here, we apply a neural network clustering theory, Fuzzy ART, to generate the division of cancer samples, which is useful in investigating unknown cancer types or subtypes. On the other hand, we use diffusion maps, which interpret the eigenfunctions of Markov matrices as a system of coordinates on the original data set in order to obtain efficient representation of data geometric descriptions, …

Differential Evolution Particle Swarm Optimization For Digital Filter Design, Bipul Luitel, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, swarm and evolutionary algorithms have been applied for the design of digital filters. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) and differential evolution particle swarm optimization (DEPSO) have been used here for the design of linear phase finite impulse response (FIR) filters. Two different fitness functions have been studied and experimented, each having its own significance. The first study considers a fitness function based on the passband and stopband ripple, while the second study considers a fitness function based on the mean squared error between the actual and the ideal filter response. DEPSO seems to be promising tool for FIR …

Much recent research activity has focused on the theory and application of quantum calculus. This branch of mathematics continues to find new and useful applications and there is much promise left for investigation into this field. We present a formulation of dynamic programming grounded in the quantum calculus. Our results include the standard dynamic programming induction algorithm which can be interpreted as the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation in the quantum calculus. Furthermore, we show that approximate dynamic programming in quantum calculus is tenable by laying the groundwork for the backpropagation algorithm common in neural network training. In particular, we prove that the …

Towards Spike-Based Speech Processing: A Biologically Plausible Approach To Simple Acoustic Classification, Ismail Uysal, Harsha Sathyendra, John G. Harris

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Shortcomings of automatic speech recognition (ASR) applications are becoming more evident as they are more widely used in real life. The inherent non-stationarity associated with the timing of speech signals as well as the dynamical changes in the environment make the ensuing analysis and recognition extremely difficult. Researchers often turn to biology seeking clues to make better engineered systems, and ASR is no exception with the usage of feature sets such as Mel frequency cepstral coefficients, which employ filter banks similar to cochlear filter banks in frequency distribution and bandwidth. In this paper, we delve deeper into the mechanics of …

Mimo Beam-Forming With Neural Network Channel Prediction Trained By A Novel Pso-Ea-Depso Algorithm, Chris G. Potter, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Kurt Louis Kosbar

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new hybrid algorithm based on particle swarm optimization (PSO), evolutionary algorithm (EA), and differential evolution (DE) is presented for training a recurrent neural network (RNN) for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel prediction. The hybrid algorithm is shown to be superior in performance to PSO and differential evolution PSO (DEPSO) for different channel environments. The received signal-to-noise ratio is derived for un-coded and beam-forming MIMO systems to see how the RNN error affects the performance. This error is shown to deteriorate the accuracy of the weak singular modes, making beam-forming more desirable. Bit error rate simulations are performed to validate these …

On The Ergodic Capacity Of Mimo Triply Selective Rayleigh Fading Channels, Chengshan Xiao, Y. Rosa Zheng Jun 2008

On The Ergodic Capacity Of Mimo Triply Selective Rayleigh Fading Channels, Chengshan Xiao, Y. Rosa Zheng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The ergodic capacity is investigated for triply selective MIMO Rayleigh fading channels. A mathematical formula is derived for the ergodic capacity in the case when the channel state information is known to the receiver but unknown to the transmitter. A closed-form formula is derived that quantifies the effect of the frequency-selective fading on the ergodic capacity into an intersymbol interference (ISI) degradation factor. Different from the existing conclusion that the frequency-selective fading channel has the same ergodic capacity as the frequency flat fading channel, we show that the discrete-time inter-tap correlated frequency selective fading channel has smaller ergodic capacity than …

Synthesis Of Double-Input Dc-Dc Converters Using A Single-Pole Triple-Throw Switch As A Building Block, Karteek Gummi, Mehdi Ferdowsi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Hybridizing power electronic systems using an energy storage unit has gained popularity in transportation and power system applications. This task has traditionally been performed by using several independent power electronic converters. Multi-input converters, due to their reduced part count and improved efficiency, seem to be an advantageous option to replace the conventional converters. A few multi-input converter topologies have been reported in the literature; however, there is not a systematic approach to derive them. Furthermore, all possible topologies are not completely explored and it is difficult to derive new converters from the existing topologies. Hence, in this paper, a systematic …

Artificial Immune System Based Dstatcom Control For An Electric Ship Power System, Pinaki Mitra, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) is a shunt compensation device which is generally used to solve power quality problems in distribution systems. In an all-electric ship power system, these power quality problems mainly arise due to the pulsed loads, which causes the degradation of the entire system performance. This paper presents the application of DSTATCOM to improve the power quality in a ship power system during and after pulsed loads. The control strategy of the DSTATCOM plays an important role in maintaining the voltage at the point of common coupling. A novel adaptive control strategy for the DSTATCOM based on artificial …

Limitations of present immunity analysis methods are discussed.

Novel Near-Field Microwave And Millimeter Wave Differential Probe Using A Dual-Modulated Single Aperture, Mohamed A. Abou-Khousa, R. Zoughi May 2008

Novel Near-Field Microwave And Millimeter Wave Differential Probe Using A Dual-Modulated Single Aperture, Mohamed A. Abou-Khousa, R. Zoughi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel differential probe design is introduced in this paper for near-field microwave and millimeter wave non-destructive testing (NDT) and imaging applications. In such applications, the variations in the distance between the probing antenna and the structure under inspection, i.e., standoff distance, can potentially mask the signal of interest, and hence, adversely impact the detection capability of the probe. Differential near-field probes and compensation methods were developed in the past to null out the standoff distance variation effect from the measured signal. The available methods, however, suffer from some limitations such as using two balanced apertures or offering limited range …

Channel Equalization And Symbol Detection For Single Carrier Broadband Mimo Systems With Multiple Carrier Frequency Offsets, Chengshan Xiao, Y. Rosa Zheng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We consider the frequency-domain channel equalization and symbol detection of multiple input multiple output (MIMO) single-carrier broadband wireless system in the presence of severe frequency-selective channel fading and multiple unknown carrier frequency offsets (CFOs). We show that the constellation of the equalized data is rotating due to multiple CFOs, therefore, the equalized data can not be reliably detected without removing the rotating phases caused by the multiple unknown CFOs. Instead of estimating the CFOs, we propose a method to estimate the rotating phases caused by multiple CFOs, remove the rotating phases from the equalized data, and perform symbol detection. Numerical …
