Modeling Multilayer Power Distribution Network By Systematically Incorporating Via And Cavity Models, Yaojiang Zhang, Francesco De Paulis, Jun Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A closed-form expression for via barrel-plate capacitances is derived. This results in a more accurate equivalent circuit model for decoupling capacitors including both parasitic inductances and via capacitances. Multilayer power distribution network (PDN) is then analyzed by incorporating the circuit models of both vias and parallel plane pair. Circuit simulator is used to evaluate the coupling properties among various locations in the multilayer PDN structures.

The Time Derivative Neuron, Jie Xu, John G. Harris Sep 2008

The Time Derivative Neuron, Jie Xu, John G. Harris

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have developed the time derivative neuron to reduce the bandwidth needed to encode continuous-time input signals using spiking neuron models. Unlike conventional spiking neuron models, the time derivative neuron generates more spikes in regions of high change and is essentially invariant to DC shifts of the input. We describe the model and develop an efficient reconstruction algorithm to demonstrate its reconstruction accuracy and transmission bandwidth. The idea has both digital and analog hardware realizations and we show a SPICE transistor-level simulation of an efficient analog CMOS implementation. ©2008 IEEE.

Pulse-Based Signal Compression For Implanted Neural Recording Systems, John G. Harris, José C. Principe, Justin C. Sanchez, Du Chen, Christy She

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Today's implanted neural systems are bound by tight constraints on power and communication bandwidth. Most conventional ADC-based approaches fall into two categories. Either they transmit all of the information at the Nyquist rate but are ultimately limited to only a handful of channels due to communication bandwidth constraints. Or they perform spike detection on the front-end which allows a scale up to 100 or more channels but prevents the use of spike sorting on the backend. Spike sorting is an important step that provides a labeling to multiple neurons on each channel and further improves the accuracy of spike detection. …

Novel Variable Step Size Nlms Algorithms For Echo Cancellation, Mohammad Asif Iqbal, Steven L. Grant

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper we present two new variable step size (VSS) methods for adaptive filters. These vs.S methods are so effective; they eliminate the need for a separate double-talk detection algorithm in echo cancellation applications. the key feature of both approaches is the introduction of a new near-end signal energy estimator (NE-SEE) that provides accurate and computationally efficient estimates even during double-talk and echo path change events. the first vs.S algorithm applies the NESEE to the recently proposed Nonparametric vs.S NLMS (NPVSS-NLMS) algorithm. the resulting algorithm has excellent convergence characteristics with an intrinsic immunity to double-talk. the second approach is …

Particle Swarm Optimization With Quantum Infusion For The Design Of Digital Filters, Bipul Luitel, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, particle swarm optimization with quantum infusion (PSO-QI) has been applied for the design of digital filters. In PSO-QI, Global best (gbest) particle (in PSO star topology) obtained from particle swarm optimization is enhanced by doing a tournament with an offspring produced by quantum behaved PSO, and selecting the winner as the new gbest. Filters are designed based on the best approximation to the ideal response by minimizing the maximum ripples in passband and stopband of the filter response. PSO-QI, as is shown in the paper, converges to a better fitness. This new algorithm is implemented in the …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Power system networks are complex systems that are highly nonlinear and non-stationary, and therefore, their performance is difficult to optimize using traditional optimization techniques. This paper presents an enhanced particle swarm optimizer for solving constrained optimization problems for power system applications, in particular, the optimal allocation of multiple STATCOM units. The study focuses on the capability of the algorithm to find feasible solutions in a highly restricted hyperspace. The performance of the enhanced particle swarm optimizer is compared with the classical particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, genetic algorithm (GA) and bacterial foraging algorithm (BFA). Results show that the enhanced PSO …

Hardware Implementations Of Swarming Intelligence -- A Survey, Cameron Eric Johnson, Parviz Palangpour, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Swarming intelligence (SI) is the property of a system whereby the collective behaviors of (unsophisticated) agents interacting locally with their environment cause coherent global patterns to emerge. Because there are no central processing requirements, SI is ideal for parallelization, which lends it well to hardware implementations in many inexpensive processors. Several implementations in hardware that exploit this property for rapid calculation and inexpensive construction are highlighted in this paper to provide a good starting point for developing hardware platforms for SI algorithms.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper searches for the best possible switching sequence in a multilevel multi-phase inverter that gives the lowest amount of voltage harmonics. A modified discrete particle swarm (MDPSO) algorithm is used in an attempt to find the optimal space vector modulation switching sequence that results in the lowest voltage THD. As with typical PSO cognitive and social parameters are used to guide the search, but an additional mutation term is added to broaden the amount of area searched. The search space is the feasible solutions for the predetermined vectors at a given modulation index. Comparison of the MDPSO algorithm to …

Power System Control With An Embedded Neural Network In Hybrid System Modeling, Seung-Mook Baek, Jung-Wook Park, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Output limits of the power system stabilizer (PSS) can improve the system damping performance immediately following a large disturbance. Due to nonsmooth nonlinearities arising from the saturation limits, these values cannot be determined by the conventional tuning methods based on linear analysis. Only ad hoc tuning procedures can been used. A feedforward neural network (with a structure of multilayer perceptron neural network) is applied to identify the dynamics of an objective function formed by the states and, thereafter, to compute the gradients required in the nonlinear parameter optimization. Moreover, its derivative information is used to replace that obtained from the …

This paper presents a comparison of swarm intelligence and evolutionary techniques based approaches for minimization of system losses and improvement of voltage profiles in a power network. Efficient distribution of reactive power in an electric network can be achieved by adjusting the excitation on generators, the on-load tap changer positions of transformers, and proper switching of discrete portions of inductors or capacitors. This is a mixed integer non-linear optimization problem where metaheuristics techniques have proven suitable for providing optimal solutions. Four algorithms explored in this paper include differential evolution (DE), particle swarm optimization (PSO), a hybrid combination of DE and …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cavity model with segmentation method is extended to the analysis of radio frequency interference (RFI) problems in a shielding enclosure with printed circuit boards (PCBs) . Sixteen different Green's functions, instead of one in the conventional segmentation method developed for PCB cavities, are introduced to describe the fields in various cavities formed by enclosure walls and PCB copper planes. Both horizontal and vertical connections among these cavities are achieved by enforcing the boundary conditions along their common interfaces. Numerical examples demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the method by compared with full wave simulations.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are specialized hybrid electric vehicles that have the potential to obtain enough energy for average daily commuting from batteries. These batteries would be charged from the power grid and would thus allow for a reduction in the overall petroleum consumption. To implement the plug-in function, a single phase bidirectional AC-DC converter interfacing with the grid is essential. The implementation of a bidirectional AC-DC converter can allow for battery recharge from the grid, battery energy injection to the AC grid, and battery energy for AC power stabilization. In this paper, the basic requirements and specifications for …

Nowdays the fast and increased demand for bandwidth in the telecommunication world translates into the design of complex boards exchanging data at high bit rate in reduced design cycle. Sometimes it is impossible to spent time in setting pre-layout simulations, because they are not compatible with the design time schedule. In this scenario it is better to design the boards using experience and then make simulations in conjunction with measurements, using customized numerical tools which don't need complex models.

An Improved Cascaded H-Bridge Multilevel Inverter Controlled By An Unbalanced Voltage Level Sigma-Delta Modulator, Jingsheng Liao, Mehdi Ferdowsi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Multilevel inverters have been proven to be viable solutions for high-power automotive motor drive applications due to their high volt-ampere ratings. Cascaded H-bridge inverters are a promising breed of multilevel inverters which generally require several independent dc sources. Replacement of all but one of the dc sources with capacitors in cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverters, which leads to single-dc-source per-phase cascaded inverters, has recently gained popularity. However, very few efforts have been made to address the challenging problem of voltage regulation in the replacing capacitors. In this paper, applicability of a real-time voltage control technique named unbalanced voltage level sigma-delta modulation …

Analytical Evaluation Of Via-Plate Capacitance For Multilayer Printed Circuit Boards And Packages, Yaojiang Zhang, Jun Fan, Giuseppe Selli, Matteo Cocchini, Francesco De Paulis

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The via-plate capacitance for a via transition to a multilayer printed circuit board is evaluated analytically in terms of higher order parallel-plate modes. The Green's function in a bounded coaxial cavity for a concentric magnetic ring current is first derived by introducing reflection coefficients for cylindrical waves at the inner and outer cavity walls. These walls can be perfect electric conductor (PEC)/perfect magnetic conductor(PMC) or a nonreflective perfectly matched layer. by further assuming a magnetic frill current on the via-hole in the metal plate, an analytical formula is derived for the via barrel-plate capacitance by summing the higher order modes …

A model of the power delivery network, similar to the ICEM or LECCS model, was developed for a microcontroller running a typical program and used to predict the noise voltage between the power and return planes of a PCB. The IC and package model was generated using the Apache tool suite. A model of the PCB was created using an electromagnetic cavity model …

Economic Load Dispatch Using Bacterial Foraging Technique With Particle Swarm Optimization Biased Evolution, Ahmed Yousuf Saber, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy Sep 2008

Economic Load Dispatch Using Bacterial Foraging Technique With Particle Swarm Optimization Biased Evolution, Ahmed Yousuf Saber, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a novel modified bacterial foraging technique (BFT) to solve economic load dispatch (ELD) problems. BFT is already used for optimization problems, and performance of basic BFT for small problems with moderate dimension and searching space is satisfactory. Search space and complexity grow exponentially in scalable ELD problems, and the basic BFT is not suitable to solve the high dimensional ELD problems, as cells move randomly in basic BFT, and swarming is not sufficiently achieved by cell-to-cell attraction and repelling effects for ELD. However, chemotaxis, swimming, reproduction and elimination-dispersal steps of BFT are very promising. On the other …

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are uniquely capable of providing both transportation and battery storage interconnection to the electric power grid. This ability allows PHEVs the possibility of serving the power grid in the capacity of a mobile energy storage unit, providing the grid with additional stability, reliability, costeffectiveness, and efficiency. Additionally, with the higher fuel efficiency of PHEVs, the transportation and power generation sectors can collectively reduce their ecologically harmful emissions and increase their reliance on environmentally friendly energy sources. These concepts are still new and under development; in this paper, the viability of the PHEV as a mobile …

Frequency-Domain Blind Source Separation With Permutation Control, Peng Xie, Steven L. Grant Sep 2008

Frequency-Domain Blind Source Separation With Permutation Control, Peng Xie, Steven L. Grant

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper explores the problem of frequency-domain Blind Source Separation (BSS) of convolutive mixtures. The main difficulties of this approach lie in the so called permutation and amplitude problems. In order to solve the permutation ambiguity, a new hybrid approach is proposed, in which the Independent Component Analysis (ICA) processes across all frequency bins are concatenated and each of them is embedded with a permutation control unit. In each frequency bin, when the separation matrix is obtained by the ICA process, the control unit detects the possible permutation and aligns the matrix only if the permutation is confirmed. Then the …

Intelligent Tool For Determining The True Harmonic Current Contribution Of A Customer In A Power Distribution Network, Joy Mazumdar, Ronald G. Harley, Frank C. Lambert, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Marty L. Page

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Customer loads connected to power distribution network may be broadly categorized as either linear or nonlinear. Nonlinear loads inject harmonics into the power network. Harmonics in a power system are classified as either load harmonics or as supply harmonics depending on their origin. The source impedance also impacts the harmonic current flowing in the network. Hence, any change in the source impedance is reflected in the harmonic spectrum of the current. This paper proposes a novel method based on artificial neural networks to isolate and evaluate the impact of the source impedance change without disrupting the operation of any load, …
