A Bist Technique For Crosstalk Noise Detection In Fpgas, Waleed K. Al-Assadi, Sindhu Kakarla

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

As Integrated Circuits are migrated to more advanced technologies, it has become clear that crosstalk noise is an important phenomenon that must be taken into account. Also, crosstalk noise has emerged as a serious problem in recent years, because more and more devices and wires have been packed on electronic chips. Despite being more immune to crosstalk noise than their ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) counterparts, the dense interconnected structures of FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) invite more vulnerabilities to crosstalk noise. Due to the lack of electrical detail concerning FPGA devices it is quite difficult to test the faults …

Damping Inter-Area Oscillations In Power Systems By Statcoms, Mahyar Zarghami, Mariesa Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Shunt FACTS devices such as STATCOMs are best known for their impact on reactive power flow in power networks. This is usually done by local reactive compensation which also regulates voltage magnitude of the bus to which the shunt FACTS device is connected. on the other hand, these devices are less known for their effect on active power flow. This paper discusses a novel approach for damping inter-area oscillations in a large power network using multiple STATCOMs. in the paper, it will be shown that these oscillations can be controlled by changing STATCOMs' bus voltage angles, hence regulating active power …

On The Mutual Information And Power Allocation For Vector Gaussian Channels With Finite Discrete Inputs, Chengshan Xiao, Yahong Rosa Zheng Dec 2008

On The Mutual Information And Power Allocation For Vector Gaussian Channels With Finite Discrete Inputs, Chengshan Xiao, Yahong Rosa Zheng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, the mutual information and power allocation are discussed for vector Gaussian channels with finite discrete inputs. It is shown that the classic water filling and mercury-water filling policies, which are allocating power to a bank of independent parallel channels, may lead to significant loss compared to the original system without power allocation for finite discrete inputs. a generalized linear precoder, which is a non-diagonal and non-unitary matrix, is proposed for cross- channel power allocation to maximize the mutual information for vector channels. Numerical examples show that the new precoding-Based power allocation provides significant gain for a broad …

A Model Based Fault Detection And Prognostic Scheme For Uncertain Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems, Balaje T. Thumati, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new fault detection and prognostics (FDP) framework is introduced for uncertain nonlinear discrete time system by using a discrete-time nonlinear estimator which consists of an online approximator. A fault is detected by monitoring the deviation of the system output with that of the estimator output. Prior to the occurrence of the fault, this online approximator learns the system uncertainty. In the event of a fault, the online approximator learns both the system uncertainty and the fault dynamics. A stable parameter update law in discrete-time is developed to tune the parameters of the online approximator. This update law is also …

Proper Orthogonal Decomposition In The Generation Of Reduced Order Models For Interconnects, Wu Zhong Lin, Yao Jiang Zhang, Er Ping Li

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, reduced order models are generated using the technique of proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), also known as Karhunen-Loève decomposition (KLD) for the simulations of interconnect problems. Model order reduction is achieved by projecting the state-space of the original problems onto a subspace spanned by a few numbers of proper orthogonal modes (POMs) extracted by the POD procedure from an ensemble of system responses at a series of selected frequencies. the proper orthogonal values (POVs) corresponding to the POMs indicate the level of the importance of each POM and provide a guidance for the number of POMs to be …

Neural Network Output Feedback Control Of A Quadrotor Uav, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Travis Alan Dierks

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A neural network (NN) based output feedback controller for a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is proposed. The NNs are utilized in the observer and for generating virtual and actual control inputs, respectively, where the NNs learn the nonlinear dynamics of the UAV online including uncertain nonlinear terms like aerodynamic friction and blade flapping. It is shown using Lyapunov theory that the position, orientation, and velocity tracking errors, the virtual control and observer estimation errors, and the NN weight estimation errors for each NN are all semi-globally uniformly ultimately bounded (SGUUB) in the presence of bounded disturbances and NN functional …

A Variable-Order Flom Algorithm For Heavy-Tailed Clutter Suppression, Y. Rosa Zheng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The normalized fractionally-lower order moment (FLOM) algorithm exhibits fast convergence but high excess mean squared error (MSE) when the order is less than 2. This paper proposes a method using variable order moments to adaptively changing the order during adaptation, thus achieving both fast initial convergence and low excess MSE in the steady state. The algorithm is applied to both Gaussian and heavy-tailed non-Gaussian clutter suppression in phased array applications. The results show better performances of the proposed algorithm over the normalized FLOM and normalized Least Mean Square (NLMS) algorithms. The proposed algorithm also performs well in other adaptive filtering …

Some system-level electrostatic discharge (ESD) tests repeat badly if different ESD generators are used. For improving repeatability, ESD generator specifications have been changed, and modified generators have been compared in a worldwide round robin test. The test showed up to 1 : 3 variations of failure levels. Multiple parameters that characterize ESD generators have been measured. This paper correlates the parameters to test result variations trying to distinguish between important and nonrelevant parameters. The transient fields show large variations among different ESD generators. A correlation has been observed in many equipment under tests (EUTs) between failure levels and the spectral …

Prediction Of Effective Permittivity Of Diphasic Dielectrics Using An Equivalent Capacitance Model, Sandeep K. Patil, Marina Koledintseva, Robert W. Schwartz, Wayne Huebner

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An analytical model based on an equivalent capacitance circuit for expressing a static effective permittivity of a composite dielectric with complex-shaped inclusions is presented. The dielectric constant of 0-3 composites is investigated using this model. The geometry of the capacitor containing a composite dielectric is discretized into partial parallel-plate capacitor elements, and the effective permittivity of the composite is obtained from the equivalent capacitance of the structure. First, an individual cell diphasic dielectric (a high-permittivity spherical inclusion enclosed in a lower permittivity parallelepiped) is considered. The capacitance of this cell is modeled as a function of an inclusion radius/volume fraction. …

In this paper, a new power quality index (PQI), which is directly related to the generation of distortion power from nonlinear harmonic loads, is introduced to determine their harmonic pollution ranking in a distribution power system. The electric load composition rate (LCR) and the total harmonic distortion (THD) for the estimated currents on each harmonic load are used to define the proposed PQI. The reduced multivariate polynomial (RMP) model with one-shot training property is applied to realize the PQI. Then, the ranking of distortion power for each nonlinear load, which have adverse effect on the entire system, is determined. It …

The time scales calculus, which includes the study of the nabla derivatives, is an emerging key topic due to many multidisciplinary applications. We extend this calculus to Approximate Dynamic Programming. In particular, we investigate application of the nabla derivative, one of the fundamental dynamic derivatives of time scales. We present a nabla-derivative based derivation and proof of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation, the solution of which is the fundamental problem in the field of dynamic programming. By drawing together the calculus of time scales and the applied area of stochastic control via Approximate Dynamic Programming, we connect two major fields of research.

Consequently, medium access protocols (MAC) protocols are needed for such networks to assess and provide access to the channel so that tags can be read accurately. In this paper, we investigate a suite of feasible power control schemes to ensure overall coverage area of the system while maintaining a desired read rate. The power control scheme and MAC protocol dynamically adjusts the RFID reader power output in …

A New Walking Pattern Svm Technique For Five-Phase Motor Drives, Jing Huang, Keith Corzine

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

As multi-phase motor drives become more popular and practical, new research in this area investigates potential advantages including lower torque ripple and better power density. The added dimensions of a multi-phase machine leads to a completely different operating nature than standard three-phase machines and merits research into new modulation methods. The five-phase and six-phase machines have been traditionally studied in the literature applying voltage-source modulation methods such as sine-triangle modulation and space- vector modulation for current harmonic elimination. Recent research of five-phase induction motor drives addressed nearest three vectors switching; which adds current harmonics but lowers torque ripple and considerably …

This noise coupling mechanism from PCB to shielding enclosure is investigated in this paper using the cavity model and the segmentation technique. In this approach, the structure of an enclosure with a PCB inside is divided into cavities with both horizontal and vertical connections. Modeling result agrees well with full wave simulations, and the simulation time is considerably reduced. Furthermore, the relationship …

Joint Adaptive Distributed Rate And Power Control For Wireless Networks, James W. Fonda, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Steve Eugene Watkins

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel adaptive distributed rate and power control (ADRPC) protocol is introduced for wireless networks. The proposed controller contrasts from others by providing nonlinear compensation to the problem of transmission power and bit-rate adaptation. The protocol provides control of both signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) and quality-of-service (QoS) support to bit-rate adaptation. Bit-rate adaptation is performed by local estimation of congestion levels, rendering little packet overhead, using Lyapunov based adaptive control methods. Performance of the proposed control scheme is shown through analytical proof and simulation examples.

Novel Dynamic Representation And Control Of Power Networks Embedded With Facts Devices, Shahab Mehraeen, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Mariesa Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

FACTS devices have been shown to be powerful in damping power system oscillations caused by faults; however, in the multi machine control using FACTS, the control problem involves solving differential-algebraic equations of a power network which renders the available control schemes ineffective due to heuristic design and lack of know how to incorporate FACTS into the network. A method to generate nonlinear dynamic representation of a power system consisting of differential equations alone with universal power flow controller (UPFC) is introduced since differential equations are typically preferred for controller development. Subsequently, backstepping methodology is utilized to reduce the generator oscillations …

Eliminating Via-Plane Coupling Using Ground Vias For High-Speed Signal Transitions, Songping Wu, Xin Chang, Christian Schuster, Xiaoxiong Gu, Jun Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

When a high-speed signal transits through a via that penetrates a plane pair, parallel-plane resonances can cause additional insertion loss for the signal. To eliminate this via-plane coupling, ground vias are added adjacent to the signal via. This paper discusses the impact of the ground vias as a function of the number of the ground vias, their locations, and the size of the plane pair. A block-by-block physics-based equivalent circuit modeling approach is used in the study. The underlying physics of the phenomenon and the design implications are also discussed in the paper.

A Model Based Fault Detection Scheme For Nonlinear Multivariable Discrete-Time Systems, Balaje T. Thumati, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a novel robust scheme is developed for detecting faults in nonlinear discrete time multi-input and multi-output systems in contrast with the available schemes that are developed in continuous-time. Both state and output faults are addressed by considering separate time profiles. The faults, which could be incipient or abrupt, are modeled using input and output signals of the system. By using nonlinear estimation techniques, the discrete-time system is monitored online. Once a fault is detected, its dynamics are characterized using an online approximator. A stable parameter update law is developed for the online approximator scheme in discrete-time. The …

A Sawtooth Waveform Inspired Pitch Estimator For Speech And Music, Arturo Camacho, John G. Harris Sep 2008

A Sawtooth Waveform Inspired Pitch Estimator For Speech And Music, Arturo Camacho, John G. Harris

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A sawtooth waveform inspired pitch estimator (SWIPE) has been developed for speech and music. SWIPE estimates the pitch as the fundamental frequency of the sawtooth waveform whose spectrum best matches the spectrum of the input signal. The comparison of the spectra is done by computing a normalized inner product between the spectrum of the signal and a modified cosine. The size of the analysis window is chosen appropriately to make the width of the main lobes of the spectrum match the width of the positive lobes of the cosine. SWIPE′, a variation of SWIPE, utilizes only the first and prime …
