Power Sharing In A Double-Input Buckboost Converter Using Offset Time Control, Deepak Somayajula, Mehdi Ferdowsi
Power Sharing In A Double-Input Buckboost Converter Using Offset Time Control, Deepak Somayajula, Mehdi Ferdowsi
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Multi-input power electronic converters have been gaining popularity in applications such as renewable energy sources and hybrid electric vehicles due to their reduced component count. In this paper, a new control method is introduced and successfully applied to a double-input buckboost converter to adjust the power supplied by each one of the sources. The control scheme is based on controlling the offset time between the switching commands while switching frequency is kept constant. Theoretically, it is proved that the offset time between the switch commands has a direct impact on the amount of current drawn from each source. The proposed …

Small-Signal Impedance Measurement Of Power-Electronics-Based Ac Power Systems Using Line-To-Line Current Injection, Jing Huang, Keith Corzine, M. Belkhayat
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Naval ships as well as aerospace power systems are incorporating a greater degree of power electronic switching sources and loads. Although these components provide exceptional performance, they are prone to instability due to their high efficiency and constant power characteristics that can exhibit negative impedance nature at certain frequencies. When designing these systems, integrators must consider the impedance versus frequency at an interface (which designates source and load). Stability criteria have been developed in terms of source and load impedances for both dc and ac systems, and it is often helpful to have techniques for impedance measurement. For dc systems, …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Accurate and fast estimation of VLSI interconnect thermal profiles has become critically important to estimate their impact on circuit/ system performance and reliability, which is necessary for reducing product development time and achieving first-pass silicon success. Present commercial thermal analysis tools are incapable of simulating complex structures, particularly in the 3-D domain and are also difficult to integrate with existing design tools. Existing analytical thermal models are not perfect either: they are either not accurate enough or oversimplified. This paper uses a methodology, which exploits existing electrical resistance solvers for thermal simulation, to allow fast acquisition of thermal profiles of …

The analysis and the design of the Power Delivery Network (PDN) is crucial in the real world of high-speed and high-performance on-board systems. In this context, the Cavity Model (where facing portions of power bus are considered electromagnetic resonant cavities) can be used to study the generation and propagation of noise. Given a real-world board's layout, one of the primary requirements for the application of this technique is the geometrical identification of all the cavities and their connectivity. This paper is focused on the fully automatic generation of this geometrical dataset as part of an integrated tool for the analysis …

Electromagnetic field will scatter when incident on boundaries separating media with different constitutive parameters. This paper demonstrates the use of a differential operator on recorded scattered waves to reveal the shape of the boundary. The method is noninvasive and is composed of three phases. First, the area of interest is illuminated and the resulting scattered electromagnetic fields are recorded. In the 2nd phase, the captured data is numerically reverse simulated in time to reconstruct the field distribution in the region of interest. Finally, the differential imaging operator is applied on the reconstructed wave field, creating an image delineating the boundary …

This work demonstrates a simple experimental setup to measure ESD-induced voltage to traces on a printed circuit board when ESD current is injected directly onto the outside of a metal case and presents how the induced voltage can be affected by the physical structure of the PCB ground and the metal case. The correlation between ESD-induced voltage and the method of connecting the PCB and chassis grounds shall be discussed, as well as how the PCB ground fill affects ESD. These experimental results may provide guidance for a better design for ESD immunity.

This paper presents a new approach to Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) scheduling. V2G technology has drawn great interest in the recent years. It can efficiently manage load fluctuation, peak load; however, it increases spinning reserves and reliability. V2G can reduce dependencies on small expensive units in the existing power systems as energy storage that can decrease running costs. Success of the V2G research depends on efficient scheduling of grid able vehicles in limited parking lots. as number of grid able vehicles in V2G is much higher than small units of existing systems, unit commitment (UC) with V2G is more complex than basic …

Coordinated Reactive Power Control Of A Large Wind Farm And A Statcom Using Heuristic Dynamic Programming, Wei Qiao, Ronald G. Harley, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A novel interface neurocontroller (INC) is proposed for the coordinated reactive power control between a large wind farm equipped with doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs) and a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM). The heuristic dynamic programming (HDP) technique and radial basis function neural networks (RBFNNs) are used to design this INC. It effectively reduces the level of voltage sags as well as the over-currents in the DFIG rotor circuit during grid faults, and therefore, significantly enhances the fault ride-through capability of the wind farm. The INC also acts as a coordinated external damping controller for the wind farm and the STATCOM, …

In high-power adjustable-speed motor drives, such as those used in electric ship propulsion systems, active filters provide a viable solution to mitigating harmonic related issues caused by diode or thyristor rectifier front-ends. To handle the large compensation currents and provide better thermal management, two or more paralleled semiconductor switching devices can be used. In this paper, a novel topology is proposed where two active filter inverters are connected with tapped reactors to share the compensation currents. The proposed active filter topology can also produce seven voltage levels, which significantly reduces the switching current ripple and the size of passive components. …

If a PCB is struck by an ESD the injected current spreads throughout the PCB and returns via attached cables. During the current spread a variety of effects occur: The current spreads on the main ground and power planes, couples into traces and IC lead-frames and bond wires. Further, the PCB and the attached cables can form resonators causing ringing at their natural resonance frequencies. Understanding the current spread onto a PCB, best, also onto the traces is of great importance for gaining insight into ESD related problems on products. A test setup has been created that allows capturing and …

An analytical model of an effective permittivity of a composite taking into account statistically distributed orientations of inclusions in the form of prolate spheroids will be presented. In particular, this paper considers the normal Gaussian distribution for either zenith angle, or azimuth angle, or for both angles describing the orientation of inclusions. The model is an extension of the Maxwell Garnett (MG) mixing rule for multiphase mixtures. The resulting complex permittivity is a tensor in the general case. The formulation presented shows that the parameters of the distribution law for orientation of inclusions affect the frequency characteristics of the composites, …

In this paper, a new algorithm is proposed to estimate mobile speed for broadband wireless communications, which often encounter large number of fading channel taps causing severe intersymbol interference. Different from existing algorithms, which commonly assume that the fading channel coefficients are available for the speed estimators, the proposed algorithm is based on the received signals which contain unknown transmitted data, unknown frequency selective fading channel coefficients possibly including line-of-sight (LOS) components, and random receiver noise. Theoretical analysis is first carried out from the received signals, and a practical algorithm is proposed based on the analytical results. The algorithm employs …

Frequency-domain equalization (FDE) is an effective technique for high data rate wireless communication systems suffering from very long intersymbol interference. Most of existing FDE algorithms are limited to slow time-varying fading channels due to lack of accurate channel estimator. In this paper, we employ interpolation method to propose new algorithms for frequency-domain channel estimation for both slow and fast timevarying fading. We show that least squares-based channel estimation and minimum mean square error-based channel estimation with interpolations are equivalent under certain conditions. Noise variance estimation and channel equalization in the frequency domain are also discussed with fine-tuned formulas. Numerical examples indicate …

Power saving is a critical issue in wireless ad hoc networks. Many of the existing energy efficient routing protocols utilize the power management feature provided by MAC layer (e.g., IEEE 802.11 PSM). the rationale behind these protocols is to power down (put in sleep) the redundant nodes that do not involve in the packets routing. to keep a low end-to-end latency and preserve the routing fidelity, a group of nodes are selected to constitute a virtual backbone throughout the network. the backbone nodes do not sleep all the time serving for the packets routing while the rest of nodes turn …
