Real-Time Cyclostationary Analysis For Cognitive Radio Via Software Defined Radio, Ruolin Zhou, Xue Li, T. C. Yang, Zhiqiang Liu, Zhiqiang Wu
Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications
Cyclostationary analysis such as spectral correlation function (SCF) and spectral coherence function (SOF) has been accepted as an important tool in signal detection and radio frequency (RF) parameter estimation in cognitive radios. However, cyclostationary analysis requires extremely high resolution to fully observe the cyclic frequency features, leading to very high computational complexity and difficulty in real time implementation, especially on software defined radios where computational capability is limited. In this paper, we implement and demonstrate a real time SCF/SOF RF signal analyzer by adopting previously proposed two-stage dynamic resolution SCF/SOF estimation method using software defined radios. Specifically, high resolution SCF/SOF …

Application Of The Human-Machine Interaction Model To Multiple Attribute Task Battery (Matb): Task Component Interaction And The Strategy Paradigm, Craig M. Walters
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
The Multiple-Attribute Task Battery (MATB) is composed of four simultaneously running components to which a human operator responds. A prior report has quantified information content as a machine input baud rate using the Hick-Hyman and Fitt's Laws for three of the four components and defines a strategy function. This report covers methods to quantify information content of the fourth component, creating a single metric which describes overall task complexity and evaluates human performance and strategy. Six MATB task-scenarios (combinations of two, three, or all four MATB components) each at two input baud rates are evaluated. Subjects were also provided with …

Non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSCs) are the most common form of cancer in the United States with an estimated 3.5 million new cases each year. Surgical excision is the main treatment for NMSC, but leaves the potential for disfiguring scars and does not fully reduce the risk of recurrence since the surrounding tissue is also sun damaged and may contain tumor-promoting mutations. By understanding the molecular etiology of NMSC we may be able to expand treatment options to more than just resection. Normal epidermal development is dependent upon the expression of the transcription factor p63. Amplification of the ΔNp63α isoform is …

In this thesis the characteristics of five bulk semi-insulated doped gallium nitride samples provided by Kyma Technologies, Inc were explored. The five GaN samples were grown on sapphire substrates by hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE) and doped with different concentrations of iron, hydrogen, carbon, oxygen and silicon. The first step of characterization was measuring the optical absorption of all the samples using a UV-NIR fiber spectrometer. Through this procedure it was found that they all showed a strong absorption at 518 nm. Thus, time-resolved differential transmission measurements were conducted at this wavelength using the second harmonic generation (SHG) of a …

With the emergence of increasing number of wireless devices and demands for higher data rates, spectrum crowding and congestion increases. Spectrum congestion problem has been challenging wireless communication engineers for a few decades. However, recent studies indicate that most of the time wide ranges of the radio spectrum are rarely utilized. Hence, the spectrum congestion is mainly due to the inefficient spectrum usage rather than the spectrum scarcity. To exploit under used spectrum and utilize the spectrum efficiently in dynamically changing environments, a new technology is needed. Cognitive Radio (CR) arises to be a possible solution to spectral crowding problem …

As the research and development of surface heating methods have increased in the recent years, the consensus has been reached amongst the injection molding community that an elevated mold surface temperature near or greater than the polymer solidification temperature provides acceptable replication of the desired micro-structured parts. The laser heating experimental work and simulation development carried out includes two sample sizes similar to those used in injection molding. A 100W CO2 laser incident on three samples of different surface roughnesses has shown to have elevated temperatures via thermal cameral data and thermocouple measurements. Among five different laser spot sizes varying …

There are two words that describe the direction of today's electronic technology, smaller and faster. With the ever decreeing size scientists and engineers must have a way to characterize materials in the nm range. In this thesis characterization of nano-materials is discussed based on scanning probe microscopy and an in-depth look at RF/microwave frequencies by scanning microwave microscopy. Recently, low-temperature spin-sprayed ferrite films (Fe3O4) with a high self-biased magnetic anisotropy field have been reported, showing FMR frequency>5 GHz. Such films hold great potential for RF/microwave devices and find immediate applications. In this study, we performed in situ scanning microwave …

Total ankle arthroplasty (TAR) is performed in order to reduce the pain and loss of ambulation in patients with various forms of arthritis and trauma. Although replacement devices fail by a number of mechanisms, wear in the polyethylene liner constitutes one of the dominating failure modes. This leads to instability and loosening of the implant. Mechanisms that contribute to wear in the liners are high contact and subsurface stresses that break down the material over time. Therefore, it is important to understand the gait that generates these stresses. Methods to characterize and decrease wear in Ohio TARs have been performed …

A simplified conceptual flapping wing MAV design, capable of hover, is formed from the works of both biologists and engineers, studying the behavior of flying insects and the aerodynamics of flapping flight. With this new model, hovering hinged plates are used to study the effects of passive deflection on aerodynamic performance using two-dimensional Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) at low Reynolds numbers (Re). The hinge is modeled as a torsional spring at the leading edge, where prescribed motion is applied. The influence of forced-to-natural frequency ratio (hinge stiffness) and stroke-to-chord ratio (leading edge kinematics) are studied, to explore the effects that …

Human action recognition is used to automatically detect and recognize actions per- formed by humans in a video. Applications include visual surveillance, human-computer interaction, and robot intelligence, to name a few. An example of a surveillance application is a system that monitors a large public area, such as an airport, for suspicious activity. In human-machine interaction, computers may be controlled by simple human actions. For example, the motion of an arm may instruct the computer to rotate a 3-D model that is being displayed. Human action recognition is also an important capability of intelligent robots that interact with humans.

This research was motivated by the desire of a Fortune 100 retail company to track its customers' behaviors through the implementation of a low-cost indoor location system using received signal devices. Indoor location through received signal strength (RSS) is of low costs, yet it suffers from poor accuracy due to lack of direct line-of-sight, multi-path ratio propagation, and various interferences. To improve its location estimation accuracy, therefore, we propose a mathematical programming based propagation approach for RSS based location systems. The core of our approach is an optimization model that minimizes the sum of squared errors of signal strength. In …

In this thesis, a fault detection and isolation (FDI) method is developed for aircraft engines by utilizing nonlinear adaptive estimation techniques. Engine sensor faults, actuator faults and component faults are considered under one unified framework. The fault diagnosis architecture consists of a bank of nonlinear adaptive estimators. One of them is the fault detection estimator used for fault detection, and the remaining ones are fault isolation estimators employed to determine the particular fault type/location after fault detection. Each isolation estimator is designed based on the functional structure of a particular fault type under consideration. The FDI architecture has been integrated …

The objective of this thesis is to present a mapping algorithm for autonomous navigation of a lawnmower based on the range and bearing information of a SICK laser. The Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithm is a tool that can be used to navigate unmanned vehicle in an unknown environment. The two-dimensional (2D) maps of the obstacles can be obtained if the laser scans the environment in a plane horizontal to the ground. However, the 2D map does not give information of the objects that are placed below the height of the laser. This makes it difficult for the lawn …

Throughout its design process (from specification to implementation) a digital circuit goes through a variety of structural changes. These changes are introduced primarily due to the use of automated tools in the design process. Checking whether the Boolean functions representing the two designs are equivalent is thus necessary to verify if a design implementation adheres to its specification. Combinational Equivalence Checking (CEC) - a process of determining whether two combinational design functions are equiv-alent, has been one of the most researched Boolean matching problems. The well-known CEC techniques that have been proposed adopt some kind of a formal approach such …

The carotid bodies are small sensory organs located along the bifurcation of the carotid arteries. They detect changes in blood gases and relay this information to the brain to allow for initiation of appropriate respiratory and cardiovascular responses. A decrease in oxygen (hypoxia) sensed by the carotid body results in an increase in firing of the carotid sinus nerve and ultimately a change in one's breathing pattern. An inability to respond to an acute hypoxic (low oxygen) episode via increased ventilation may result in death or lead to pathological or chronic conditions such as stroke and hypertension (Prabhakar et.al., 2005). …
