Excessive Grain Boundary Conductivity Of Spin-Spray Deposited Ferrite/Non-Magnetic Multilayer, Yun Xing, J. Myers, Ogheneyunume Obi, Nian X. Sun, Yan Zhuang

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

Magnetic materials with a high self-biased ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) frequency and low electrical conductivity hold great potential for RF/microwave devices. In this work, ferrite film consisting of Fe3O4 (1.2 mu m)/photoresist (60 nm)/Fe3O4 (1.2 mu m) was deposited at 90 degrees C via spin spray deposition. Broadband impedance imaging with nanometer spatial resolution was recorded by using scanning microwave microscopy. Compared to a reference sample, it turned out that the grain boundary appeared to be more conductive than the grain.

Evaluating Superconducting Ybco Film Properties Using Xray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Paul N. Barnes, Justin C. Tolliver, Timothy J. Haugan, Sharmila M. Mukhopadhyay, John T. Grant

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Initial results have been recently reported that suggest a potential correlation exists between the full-width-halfmaximum (FWHM) of the Y(3d) peak obtained by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and the critical current density a YBa2Cu3O7-x film can carry. In particular, the Y(3d5/2) demonstrated a stronger correlation. Transport currents were determined by the 4-point contact method using the 1μV/cm criterion. An apparent correlation was also suggested between the Y(3d) FWHM and ac loss data points were acquired to further test the usefulness of the correlations. Samples were created by pulsed laser deposition of YBa2 …

High-K Material Based Leaky-Wave Antenna Design, Implementation, And Manufacture, Jiahui Wang Jan 2012

High-K Material Based Leaky-Wave Antenna Design, Implementation, And Manufacture, Jiahui Wang

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Leaky-wave antennas are a class of antennas which apply a traveling wave on a guiding structure as the main radiation mechanism. The properties of leaky-wave antennas are light weight, easy to fabricate, and readily integrated into conventional millimeter-wave systems. These features make leaky-wave antennas attractive. The most important characteristic is that the antenna can steer the beam direction through changing the operating frequency rather than switching the antenna itself. Variety types of leaky-wave antennas have been introduced and developed during the past 70 years. However, there is no existing leaky-wave antenna which can widely steer the beam scanning angle by …

Fabrication And Testing Of Hierarchical Carbon Nanostructures For Multifunctional Applications, Ian Timothy Barney Jan 2012

Fabrication And Testing Of Hierarchical Carbon Nanostructures For Multifunctional Applications, Ian Timothy Barney

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Multi-scale hierarchical carbon structures have been developed by growing strongly attached carbon nanotubes (CNT) on high surface area substrates having open, interconnected porosity. This investigation was developed on cellular carbon foams but the process is equally suitable for other geometries including flat, fibers, and other porous substrates (interconnected). It is also adaptable to other substrate materials such as metals, alloys or ceramic compounds. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes are grown using a floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method after pre-coating the substrate with a silica nano-layer. The silica-coated graphitic substrates are seen to grow 280 times more nanotubes per unit area …

Applications Of Capillary Electrophoresis For Studying Serum Albumin Enantioselection Of D,L-Tryptophan Analogs, Jelynn A. Stinson Jan 2012

Applications Of Capillary Electrophoresis For Studying Serum Albumin Enantioselection Of D,L-Tryptophan Analogs, Jelynn A. Stinson

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The pharmacokinetic difference between drug enantiomers is the impetus for developing analytical techniques to assess enantiomeric purity. Capillary electrophoresis (CE) is an analytical technique that is used for characterizing drug-protein binding. The pitfall to using CE for drug-protein binding studies is protein chiral selectors tend to adsorb onto capillary walls and cause changes in electroosmotic flow that lead to decreased enantioselection and migration time irreproducibility between consecutive injections. The experimental parameters for minimizing the adverse effects of protein adsorption are not clear from the literature.

Rinsing protocols to improve enantioselection and migration time repeatability were developed using the tryptophan-bovine serum …

Type-Elimination-Based Reasoning For The Description Logic Shiqbs Using Decision Diagrams And Disjunctive Datalog, Sebastian Rudolph, Markus Krotzsch, Pascal Hitzler Jan 2012

Type-Elimination-Based Reasoning For The Description Logic Shiqbs Using Decision Diagrams And Disjunctive Datalog, Sebastian Rudolph, Markus Krotzsch, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

We propose a novel, type-elimination-based method for standard reasoning in the description logic SHIQbs extended by DL-safe rules. To this end, we first establish a knowledge compilation method converting the terminological part of an ALCIb knowledge base into an ordered binary decision diagram (OBDD) that represents a canonical model. This OBDD can in turn be transformed into disjunctive Datalog and merged with the assertional part of the knowledge base in order to perform combined reasoning. In order to leverage our technique for full SHIQbs , we provide a stepwise reduction from SHIQbs to ALCIb that preserves satisfiability and entailment of …

Dechlorination Of Environmental Contaminants Using A Hybrid Nanocatalyst: Palladium Nanoparticles Supported On Hierarchical Carbon Nanostructures, Hema Vijwani, Abinash Agrawal, Sharmila M. Mukhopadhyay

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper demonstrates the effectiveness of a new type of hybrid nanocatalyst material that combines the high surface area of nanoparticles and nanotubes with the structural robustness and ease of handling larger supports. The hybrid material is made by fabricating palladium nanoparticles on two types of carbon supports: as-received microcellular foam (Foam) and foam with carbon nanotubes anchored on the pore walls (CNT/Foam). Catalytic reductive dechlorination of carbon tetrachloride with these materials has been investigated using gas chromatography. It is seen that while both palladium-functionalized carbon supports are highly effective in the degradation of carbon tetrachloride, the rate of degradation …

Computational Investigation Of Ethanol And Bifuel Feasibility In Solstice Engine, Adam Michael Blake Jan 2012

Computational Investigation Of Ethanol And Bifuel Feasibility In Solstice Engine, Adam Michael Blake

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

A Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine enables an increased fuel efficiency and higher power output than a conventional Port Fuel Injection (PFI) system. By injecting pressurized fuel straight into each cylinder of an internal-combustion engine, the degree of fuel atomization is increased, as well as the fuel vaporization rate. In order to further harness the effects of direct injection, ethanol is implemented as a fuel. The cooling effect of ethanol fuel droplets changing to vapor inside the combustion chamber facilitates a higher compression ratio, thus increasing engine power and efficiency. Three dimensional computational simulation is used to investigate the feasibility …

Blind Cyclostationary Carrier Frequency And Symbol Rate Estimation For Underwater Acoustic Communication, Zhiqiang Wu, T. C. Yang Jan 2012

Blind Cyclostationary Carrier Frequency And Symbol Rate Estimation For Underwater Acoustic Communication, Zhiqiang Wu, T. C. Yang

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we propose a new method for blind carrier frequency and symbol rate estimation based on second order cyclostationary features for underwater acoustic communication. Followed by a coarse carrier frequency and symbol rate estimation via spectral analysis, a cyclostationary based estimation algorithm is developed to provide high resolution estimation of both parameters. Specifically, a short time varying resolution spectrum correlation function and spectrum coherence function algorithm is developed to obtain spectral lines in cyclic frequency domain to accurately estimate (1) varying carrier frequency and Doppler shift caused by relative motion and (2) symbol rate for single carrier communication. …
