Remote Heart Rate Estimation Using Consumer-Grade Cameras, Nathan E. Ruben

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

There are many ways in which the remote non-contact detection of the human heart rate might be useful. This is especially true if it can be done using inexpensive equipment such as consumer-grade cameras. Many studies and experiments have been performed in recent years to help reliably determine the heart rate from video footage of a person. The methods have taken an analysis approach which involves temporal Itering and frequency spectrum examination. This study attempts to answer questions about the noise sources which inhibit these methods from estimating the heart rate. Other statistical processes are examined for their use in …

Innovative And Efficient Simulation-Optimization Tools For Successful Groundwater Management And Conflict Resolution, Bassel Timani May 2015

Innovative And Efficient Simulation-Optimization Tools For Successful Groundwater Management And Conflict Resolution, Bassel Timani

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Simulation-Optimization (S-O) models are exemplary for strategic groundwater management planning. The two components of an S-O model serve different purposes. The simulation component models the aquifer and computes state variables resulting from stimuli such as extraction or diversion while the optimizor computes an optimal set of stimuli that maximize an objective function and satisfy a set of constraints. With the increased use of S-O model for larger and more complex real-world study areas, the use of fast and efficient S-O models has risen. Response matrix methods (RMMs) are usually used as substitute simulators within an S-O to solve the posed …

Smart Carabiner, Craig Manning May 2015

Smart Carabiner, Craig Manning

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Users of common climbing safety equipment rarely understand exactly the loads and forces they are exerting on the equipment at a given time. All climbing equipment comes with a certified safety rating for the amount of force, in kilonewtons, that particular piece of equipment can take. Unfortunately, calculating dynamic load strain on-the-fly is nearly impossible. There needs to be a reliable, easy way of knowing exactly what load is being placed on a piece of equipment at any given point of time.

Lateral Control Of A Vehicle Platoon, Samuel A. Mitchell

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Multiple lateral control systems are analyzed for use in a vehicle platoon system. In order to ensure the safety of the vehicle platoon, the system must operate under three constraints: (1) accurate path following, (2) string stability, and (3) functionality in the presence of noise. Computer simulations are employed to analyze candidates according to the safety requirements. Actual vehicle kinematics and nonlinearities - limits on turn radius, velocity, and acceleration - are included in this analysis.

Successful control system candidates are implemented in a platoon of five differential-steer vehicles. The sensing and communication requirements of the control system are discussed. …

Direct Electrical Arc Ignition Of Hybrid Rocket Motors, Michael I. Judson Jr. May 2015

Direct Electrical Arc Ignition Of Hybrid Rocket Motors, Michael I. Judson Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Hybrid rockets motors provide distinct safety advantages when compared to traditional liquid or solid propellant systems, due to the inherent stability and relative inertness of the propellants prior to established combustion. As a result of this inherent propellant stability, hybrid motors have historically proven difficult to ignite. State of the art hybrid igniter designs continue to require solid or liquid reactants distinct from the main propellants. These ignition methods however, reintroduce to the hybrid propulsion system the safety and complexity disadvantages associated with traditional liquid or solid propellants. The results of this study demonstrate the feasibility of a novel direct …

An Online Wear State Monitoring Methodology For Off-The-Shelf Embedded Processors, Srinath Arunachalam May 2015

An Online Wear State Monitoring Methodology For Off-The-Shelf Embedded Processors, Srinath Arunachalam

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Every year transistors are becoming smaller and smaller. The continued trend of transistors becoming smaller has led to double amount of transistors being placed in the same area of space from its previous generation. This has led to an exponential increase in the amount of power per unit volume on-chip, which has resulted in increasing temperature. In turn, the increase in temperature directly leads to the increase in the rate of wear of a processor. Negative-bias temperature instability (NBTI) is one of the most dominant integrated circuit (IC) failure mechanisms [5, 13] that strongly depends on temperature. NBTI manifests in …
