Discussing The “Positive Utilities” Of Autonomous Vehicles: Will Travellers Really Use Their Time Productively?, Patrick A. Singleton
Discussing The “Positive Utilities” Of Autonomous Vehicles: Will Travellers Really Use Their Time Productively?, Patrick A. Singleton
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
Autonomous vehicles (AVs) are expected to reshape travel behaviour and demand in part by enabling productive uses of travel time—a primary component of the “positive utility of travel” concept—thus reducing subjective values of travel time savings (VOT). Many studies from industry and academia have assumed significant increases in travel time use and reductions in VOT for AVs. In this position paper, I argue that AVs’ VOT impacts may be more modest than anticipated and derive from a different source. Vehicle designs and operations may limit activity engagement during travel, with AV users feeling more like car passengers than train riders. …
Association Learning Via Deep Neural Networks, Trevor J. Landeen
Association Learning Via Deep Neural Networks, Trevor J. Landeen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Deep learning has been making headlines in recent years and is often portrayed as an emerging technology on a meteoric rise towards fully sentient artificial intelligence. In reality, deep learning is the most recent renaissance of a 70 year old technology and is far from possessing true intelligence. The renewed interest is motivated by recent successes in challenging problems, the accessibility made possible by hardware developments, and dataset availability.
The predecessor to deep learning, commonly known as the artificial neural network, is a computational network setup to mimic the biological neural structure found in brains. However, unlike human brains, artificial …
The Use Of Microfluidics And Dielectrophoresis For Separation, Concentration, And Identification Of Bacteria, Cynthia Hanson
The Use Of Microfluidics And Dielectrophoresis For Separation, Concentration, And Identification Of Bacteria, Cynthia Hanson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Typical bacterial analysis involves culturing and visualizing colonies on an array of agar plates. The growth patterns and colors among the array are used to identify the bacteria. For fast growing bacteria such as Escherichia coli, analysis will take one to two days. However, slow growing bacteria such as mycobacteria can take weeks to identify. In addition, there are some species of bacteria that are viable but nonculturable. This lengthy analysis time is unacceptable for life-threatening infections and emergency situations. It is clear that to decrease the analysis of the bacteria, the culturing and growth steps must be avoided. …
Investigations Of Polyhydroxyalkanoate Secretion And Production Using Sustainable Carbon Sources, Chad L. Nielsen
Investigations Of Polyhydroxyalkanoate Secretion And Production Using Sustainable Carbon Sources, Chad L. Nielsen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are a type of biologically-produced plastic known for their biocompatibility and biodegradability. They have the potential to replace petroleum-based plastics as an environmentally-friendly alternative. This is beneficial because the release of plastics into environments such as the ocean and the buildup of plastics in landfills are major concerns facing society today. Currently, however, PHAs are significantly more expensive than their petroleum-based counterparts. This is largely due to the cost of carbon sources and of extracting the bioplastics from bacteria. The goal of these studies was to examine replacing traditional carbon sources used in PHA production like sugar and …
Numerical Evaluation Of Energy Release Rate At Material Interfaces For Fatigue Life Predictions, Robert L. Hendrickson
Numerical Evaluation Of Energy Release Rate At Material Interfaces For Fatigue Life Predictions, Robert L. Hendrickson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Composite materials are becoming popular in almost all industries. Carbon-fiber and glass-fiber composites are used in aircraft, sports equipment, boats, prosthetics, and wind turbine blades. In all these applications, the composites are subjected to different loads. Loads can take the form of impact or cyclic/fatigue loading, both of which decrease the strength of composites as micro-cracks grow through the composite. Composite laminates are made up of fiber plies (thin layers of fiber) and the fibers are surrounded by a resin like epoxy. It is common for laminates to fail because of delamination growth (plies peeling apart). Small delaminations do not …
Methods For The Aerostructural Design And Optimization Of Wings With Arbitrary Planform And Payload Distribution, Jeffrey D. Taylor
Methods For The Aerostructural Design And Optimization Of Wings With Arbitrary Planform And Payload Distribution, Jeffrey D. Taylor
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The design of an aircraft wing often involves the use of mathematical methods for simultaneous aerodynamic and structural design. The goal of many of these methods is to minimize the drag on the wing. A variety of computer models exist for this purpose, but some require the use of expensive time and computational resources to give meaningful results. As an alternative, some mathematical methods have been developed that give reason ably accurate results without the need for a computer. However, most of these methods can only be used for wings with specific shapes and payload distributions. In this thesis, a …
Thrust Augmented Nozzle For A Hybrid Rocket With A Helical Fuel Port, Joel H. Marshall
Thrust Augmented Nozzle For A Hybrid Rocket With A Helical Fuel Port, Joel H. Marshall
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A thrust augmented nozzle for hybrid rocket systems is investigated. The design lever-ages 3-D additive manufacturing to embed a helical fuel port into the thrust chamber of a hybrid rocket burning gaseous oxygen and ABS plastic as propellants. The helical port significantly increases how quickly the fuel burns, resulting in a fuel-rich exhaust exiting the nozzle. When a secondary gaseous oxygen flow is injected into the nozzle downstream of the throat, all of the remaining unburned fuel in the plume spontaneously ignites. This secondary reaction produces additional high pressure gases that are captured by the nozzle and significantly increases the …

Characterization Of Carbon Nanostructured Composite Film Using Photothermal Measurement Technique, Kurt E. Harris
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Graphene is a form of carbon with unique thermal and structural properties, giving it high potential in many applications, from electronics to driveway heating. Advanced fabrication techniques putting small, graphene-like structures in a polymer matrix could allow for incorporation of some of the benefits of graphene into very lightweight materials, and allow for broader commercialization. Measuring the thermal properties of these thin-film samples is a technical capability in need of development for use with the specific specimens used in this study. Relating those thermal properties to the microstructural composition was the focus of this work.
Several conclusions could be drawn …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Existing river management tools prioritize human uses and provide for ecosystem water needs as minimum instream flow requirements. Management efforts to provide water for multiple human and ecological needs can be improved by tools that recommend when, where, and how to allocate water between competing users across a river basin. This dissertation presents a set of tools in three studies to help managers make decisions on the allocation of water and money to improve habitat quality and area. The first study develops a new metric to measure habitat quality and area for priority river, riparian, and wetland species. The second …
Full Scale Experimental Testing Of Partially Composite Precast Concrete Sandwich Panels, Brandon L. Cox
Full Scale Experimental Testing Of Partially Composite Precast Concrete Sandwich Panels, Brandon L. Cox
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Precast concrete sandwich panels are a structural system consisting of concrete layers with insulation layers in between. The concrete layers are connected through the insulation with specially designed connectors. For engineers to properly design and analyze the strength characteristics of sandwich panels and their connectors, the engineers need to obtain recommendations from the individual connector manufacturers, which can be a very rigorous process. This project tested eight full scale precast concrete sandwich panels with two concrete layers on either side of an insulation layer with connectors concentrated at either end of each panel.
The objectives of this project were to …
Comparing Sandwich Wall Panel Shear Connector Testing Methodologies, Parker S. Syndergaard
Comparing Sandwich Wall Panel Shear Connector Testing Methodologies, Parker S. Syndergaard
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Precast concrete sandwich wall panels (PCSWPs) have been used in the precast industry for decades due to their durability, rapid construction, and thermal efficiency. Shear connectors are used to connect the two wythes of concrete to allow composite action of the system. In order to design concrete sandwich panel systems to act compositely, the engineer must obtain design values from a connector manufacturer, often times making engineers uncomfortable. Shear connectors are typically proprietary, and are required to first have design values validated through destructive testing. The method in which connectors are validated often times varies by each company. This project …
A High-Magnification Uv Lens For High-Temperature Optical Strain Measurements, Robert S. Hansen
A High-Magnification Uv Lens For High-Temperature Optical Strain Measurements, Robert S. Hansen
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is an experimental method used to produce full-field strain maps of specimens undergoing deformation. In this measurement, images of a specimen are taken before and after mechanical and thermal loading, then software is used to track deformation and compute strains. DIC has been recently adapted for high-temperature tests by using ultraviolet (UV) range cameras, lenses, and filters to produce the images.
Application of DIC to small length scales and at high temperatures can be performed with proper equipment. However, for these measurements, there is no commercially available high-magnification lens that will allow images to be taken …

Software Defined Radio For Cubesat Communication, Sarah Watkins
Software Defined Radio For Cubesat Communication, Sarah Watkins
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Cube satellites, more commonly referred to as CubeSats, are small satellites that have become increasingly popular for academic, amateur, commercial, and scientific applications over the past five to ten years. These satellites provide a fairly inexpensive and compact platform for deploying many different types of equipment. While CubeSats do not allow for housing large, complex instruments, some organizations have begun to explore the possibility of deploying networks, or clusters, of CubeSats. Satellites in these clusters could theoretically be tied together via radio frequency communications to accomplish more than a single CubeSat could alone.
This report summarizes the preliminary design and …
Hscr: High Speed Cubesat Radio, Colton Lindstrom
Hscr: High Speed Cubesat Radio, Colton Lindstrom
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Software Defined Radios (SOR) are limited by their usable bandwidth, which restricts how quickly they can transmit or receive data. The High Speed Cubesat Radio (HSCR) is capable of transmitting and receiving higher bandwidth signals by combining the bandwidths of several individual SOR transceivers. The HSCR performs phase correction to seamlessly stitch the bandwidths of each individual SOR into a single larger bandwidth.
By increasing the number of SDRs inside the HSCR, the bandwidth of the overall system will increase. This increase in bandwidth is limited only by the speed of the processing unit in working with received or transmitting …

Designing A Synthetic Spider Silk-Based Coating For Urinary Catheters To Reduce The Risk Of Cautis, Alexander Cook
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Urinary and Intravenous (IV) catheters are two of the most commonly used medical devices for administering vital drugs and obtaining diagnostic samples from patients. Unfortunately, hospital acquired infections (HAIs) occur at alarming rates due to catheter usage. The aim of this project was to design a urinary catheter that would decrease the occurrence of these infections with a catheter coating that utilizes the antimicrobial properties of synthetic spider silk in combination with the antiseptic chlorhexidine. This synthetic spider silk catheter will introduce a novel approach to catheterization in the medical industry.

For this project my team and I were asked to design and manufacture a rickshaw, a device which will enable disabled individuals to experience outdoor hiking trails, for a non-profit organization based in Logan, Utah called Common Ground. Common Ground specializes in helping people with disabilities experience the outdoors in ways that would otherwise be impossible. The rickshaw will help Common Ground achieve its goals by providing them with a way to transport people with disabilities on moderately difficult hiking trails (i.e. Wind Caves Trail in Logan Canyon). In the past, Common Ground had use of a rickshaw that had …
Combined Approaches For Quantifying Groundwater-Surface Water Exchanges In Karst Watersheds, Hyrum Tennant
Combined Approaches For Quantifying Groundwater-Surface Water Exchanges In Karst Watersheds, Hyrum Tennant
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Increasingly, groundwater and surface water are thought of as a single source [Winter, 1998]. This is due to the frequent groundwater-surface water exchanges that can occur on a varying spatial and temporal scale within a watershed. Geology and topography are two key factors in dictating the spatial frequency of these exchanges [Winter, 1999]. Understanding groundwater-surface water exchanges both temporally and spatially is critical to managing watersheds effectively. Quantifying these exchanges can be further complicated by the presence of karst geology within a watershed [Lauber and Goldscheider, 2014]. Large karst features can supply groundwater to surface …
Software Defined Radio System For Cubesat Communication, Tyler Gardner
Software Defined Radio System For Cubesat Communication, Tyler Gardner
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Cube satellites, or CubeSats, are small satellites designed around a base unit cube of 10 cm by 10 cm by 10 cm which is commonly referred to as a one unit, or 1 U, CubeSat. The modular architecture of CubeSats allows multiple 1 U frames to be stacked together to form a larger (1.5U, 2U, usually up to 6U) frame as needed. Because CubeSats are cheaper to develop and deploy in orbit than larger satellites, they have become increasingly common for academic, amateur, commercial, and scientific applications over the past five to ten years. There is potential that CubeSats will …
Designing A Synthetic Spider Silk Based Coating For Urinary Catheters To Reduce The Risk Of Cautis, Tess Marie Armbrust
Designing A Synthetic Spider Silk Based Coating For Urinary Catheters To Reduce The Risk Of Cautis, Tess Marie Armbrust
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTis) are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with life-threatening conditions. Foley catheters are the most common catheter used when a patient requires hospitalization but can become burdened with microbes which lead to CAUTis, the most common source of hospital acquired infection (HAI). The attached bacteria can form biofilms on the catheter which are difficult to treat using oral antibiotics and can lead to chronic infections. Synthetic spider silk as a catheter coating shows great promise because of demonstrated strength, biocompatibility, and antimicrobial properties. In addition, the antiseptic chlorhexidine can enhance the …

Evaluating Water Filtration And Disinfection For Household, Using Slow Sand Filters Plus Solar Disinfection, Mariana Demitry
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In this research, a household water treatment system was built and evaluated as a trial for improving the drinking water quality of the Nile River for the low-income communities. The system consisted of household-scale slow sand filters, and transparent polyethylene terephthalate-bottles for solar disinfection. The evaluation of the system depended on the removal/inactivation of some surrogates for the reference pathogens, and turbidity. The reference pathogens are pathogens specified by the World Health Organization to evaluate the efficiency of the household water treatment options. They were chosen to represent the classes of pathogens in water (bacteria, viruses, protozoa). The surrogates used …
Evaluating The Impact Of External Carbon Source In Laboratory-Based Denitrification Rate Experiments, Jared Richens
Evaluating The Impact Of External Carbon Source In Laboratory-Based Denitrification Rate Experiments, Jared Richens
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Limitations in the quality of transformation rates used with water quality models such as QUAL2K have led to the need to identify methods that can effectively and accurately determine these rates. During the early stages of method development of a Utah Department of Environmental Quality (Utah DEQ) funded project seeking to identify such methods, it was determined that under certain situations external carbon amendment may be required to successfully determine denitrification rates.
The focus of this study was to evaluate the potential impacts that introducing external carbon sources may have on estimating the laboratory denitrification rates resulting from these methods. …
Size-Scale Effects Of Nonlinear Weir Hydraulics, Nathan L. Young
Size-Scale Effects Of Nonlinear Weir Hydraulics, Nathan L. Young
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Experimental physical model studies of hydraulic structures are often conducted to replicate flow behavior that may occur at the prototype scale. Geometric similitude is most often maintained between the prototype and model when studying reservoir and open channel hydraulic structures to account for the dominant gravity and inertia forces while other fluid forces (e.g., viscosity, surface tension) are assumed negligible. However, as model size and/or upstream head decreases, other fluid forces can exceed the negligible level and influence model flow behavior. This phenomenon is referred to as size-scale effects and is one potential origin of error in predicting the prototype behavior …

Simulation And Optimization Models To Evaluate Performance Of Aquifer Storage And Recovery Wells In Fresh Water Aquifers, Ali Forghani
Simulation And Optimization Models To Evaluate Performance Of Aquifer Storage And Recovery Wells In Fresh Water Aquifers, Ali Forghani
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) involves artificially recharging an aquifer through well(s) using surplus water for later recovery in high-demand months. The operators of the studied ASR system developed the system as a means of receiving additional water rights to supplement their pre-existing water rights for extraction in dry months. However, the region’s water regulators define the performance of this ASR system as the amount of the injected water that is recoverable from the same wells during extraction periods. The study proposes recovery effectiveness (REN) as the performance index of this ASR system. REN equals the injectate proportion that the …

Evaluation Of A Side-By-Side Full-Scale Biofiltration Conversion In A Nutrient-Limited Environment, Stetson S. Bassett
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In order to meet increasing water demands and more stringent regulations drinking water treatment plant managers must continually look to new treatment strategies and optimization techniques. One such strategy is to eliminate chlorine residual before filtration, allowing indigenous bacteria already present in the source water to grow on the filter media. These microorganisms help improve effluent water quality by increasing organic and inorganic contaminant removal. The process is known as biological filtration, or biofiltration. The implications of converting a conventional filtration plant (not specifically designed for biofiltration) to a biofiltration plant are still not well understood. Therefore, the purpose of …
