A Reinforcement Learning Based Control Approach For Propofol-Induced Burst Suppression, Jason C. Huang, Scott C. Tadler, Brian J. Mickey, Keith Jones
A Reinforcement Learning Based Control Approach For Propofol-Induced Burst Suppression, Jason C. Huang, Scott C. Tadler, Brian J. Mickey, Keith Jones
Utah Space Grant Consortium
High-dose propofol is being investigated for its potential antidepressant effect. Propofol is titrated to induce burst suppression, a specific EEG pattern. However, propofol is difficult to dose due to uncertainty in each patient’s pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD), and the lack of a commercially available monitor of propofol concentration. Clinicians currently infer the proper drug dose after observing the EEG response to the given dose. In this report we share our development of an automated controller to optimally administer propofol-induced burst suppression. We designed a deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm, which includes two deep neural networks and relates a …

Advanced Video Laryngoscope And Automatic Data Collection System, Gabrielle Hoyer, Sean Runnels, Samer Merchant
Utah Space Grant Consortium
The Advanced Video Laryngoscope is designed to address the high stress situation of an inexperienced healthcare provider performing an intubation on a patient. The technology is superior to current video laryngoscopes in that it utilizes machine learning techniques to guide the healthcare provider in real-time, providing augmented reality cues to anatomical features, feedback to prevent critical levels of deoxygenation of the patient, and an automated system to assess the difficulty of airway and call on the assistance of other physicians if first-pass intubation is not successful. By providing real-time assistance to the operator, this device will increase the success rate …
Assessing The Impact Of Drop Velocity And Spacing In Binder Jetting To Improve Printing In Novel Powders And New Environments, Trenton Colton
Assessing The Impact Of Drop Velocity And Spacing In Binder Jetting To Improve Printing In Novel Powders And New Environments, Trenton Colton
Utah Space Grant Consortium
Binder Jetting (BJ) is a low-cost Additive Manufacturing (AM) process that uses inkjet technology to selectively bind particles in a powder bed. The interaction of the binder droplets with the powder is essential to the process. This is a complex interaction in which picoliter-sized droplets impact powder beds at velocities of approximately 10 m/s. The binder partially fills the voids between the powders. The fraction of void space filled with binder is the saturation and is a key parameter in BJ. The effects of printing parameters such as droplet velocity, size, and spacing on saturation levels are unknown. This study …
Effect Of Superhydrophobic Surface Microstructure On Transient Jet Impingement Cooling, D. Jacob Butterfield, John Morris
Effect Of Superhydrophobic Surface Microstructure On Transient Jet Impingement Cooling, D. Jacob Butterfield, John Morris
Utah Space Grant Consortium
Jet impingement is an effective method of rapid surface cooling, and is highly dependent on surface condition and properties. Here, silicon surfaces are modified by ion-etching different micropatterns (posts or holes) on one side and coated with Teflon to make them superhydrophobic (SH). The other side of the surface has a screen-printed resistance heater. Surfaces are heated to temperatures between 200 to 320 °C, and then impinged on by a pure water jet at room temperature with flow rates ranging from 6 to 18 mL/s. Results show that there is little effect of microstructure, although hole surfaces and shorter microstructures …

Oxidative Protection Using Pluronic Micelles, Mitchell Glen Heap
Oxidative Protection Using Pluronic Micelles, Mitchell Glen Heap
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Methods for drug delivery are currently being researched in many different applications. One significant obstacle to drug delivery is a drug's inherent hydrophobic character. Drugs that are hydrophobic are difficult to successfully administer since the body consists mostly of water. Therefore, a greater variety of drugs could potentially be used for the treatment of disease if they could successfully be administered. Recent research in oncology and virology has attempted to overcome the obstacles posed by hydrophobic drugs by encapsulating them in micelles. Micelles form spontaneously from compounds that contain both hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions and can be used to increase …
Comparison Of Locational Beamforming Algorithms For Audio Targeting, Thomas Lewis Bradshaw
Comparison Of Locational Beamforming Algorithms For Audio Targeting, Thomas Lewis Bradshaw
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
In many applications it is desirable to focus on the direction a signal is coming from to isolate the signal from interfering noise coming from other directions. This is often done by focusing the receiver on a given direction. One method to accomplish this focusing is to use an array of receivers and a signal processing algorithm called beamforming. This algorithm attenuates signals coming from all other directions besides the direction of interest, which can be viewed pictorially as a beam. However, it would also benefit many applications to be able to focus on a location rather than just a …

Designing Technology For Different Scales Of Irrigation Scheduling, Paolo Alexander Consalvo
Designing Technology For Different Scales Of Irrigation Scheduling, Paolo Alexander Consalvo
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Uncertainty in water availability is a significant challenge to the agriculture industry. Farmers and irrigators depend on novel uses of sensors and data to maximize water efficiency. Documented studies have demonstrated scheduling irrigation is a straightforward, deterministic means of achieving water efficiency. Irrigation scheduling uses several parameters to determine the moment of crop water stress due to available water in the soil. However, sensors and data for soil moisture and matric potential, a parameter describing water available to plants, have the potential to train machine learning algorithms to forecast water irrigation needs based on previous measurements. Satellite remote-sensing is another …

The work in this dissertation focuses on two examples of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), integrations of communication and monitoring capabilities to control a physical system, that operate in adversarial environments. That is to say, it is possible for individuals with malicious intent to gain access to various components of the CPS, disrupt normal operation, and induce harmful impacts. Such a deliberate action will be referred to as an attack. Therefore, some possible attacks against two CPSs will be studied in this dissertation and, when possible, solutions to handle such attacks will also be suggested.
The first CPS of interest is vehicular …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Communication channels are inherently noisy making error correction coding a major topic of research for modern communication systems. Error correction coding is the addition of redundancy to information transmitted over communication channels to enable detection and recovery of erroneous information. Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are a class of error correcting codes that have been effective in maintaining reliability of information transmitted over communication channels. Multiple algorithms have been developed to benefit from the LDPC coding scheme to improve recovery of erroneous information. This work develops a matrix construction that stores the information error probability statistics for a communication channel. This …
Design Of Road Embedded Dynamic Charging Systems For Electrified Transportation, Reza Tavakoli
Design Of Road Embedded Dynamic Charging Systems For Electrified Transportation, Reza Tavakoli
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The U.S. transportation sector represented about 28% of all energy consumption in 2018. Petroleum products accounted for 92% of this total energy. Light-duty vehicles are the largest energy consumers in the transportation sector. The high amount of petroleum used by light-duty vehicles creates significant economic and environmental challenges.
Electric Vehicles (EVs) have a higher fuel economy and can be emission-free; they are therefore an alternative solution for minimizing the negative environmental impact of internal combustion engine vehicles. However, the adoption of EVs has been limited by their limited driving range, long recharging time, and comparatively higher price.
Dynamic wireless charging …

Development And Validation Of A Synchronous Model To Simulate Skeletal Muscle Damage Due To Spaceflight Ionizing Radiation And Microgravity, Lori M. Caldwell
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Astronauts traveling or researching in space are subject to a harsh environment that includes high levels of ionizing radiation and microgravity. Ionizing radiation is dangerous to overall health because it causes double-stranded DNA breaks, increases the production of free radicals or reactive oxygen species, and leads to an enhanced risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer over a person’s lifetime. Similarly, microgravity is hazardous to astronaut health because humans require gravity to maintain a healthy heart and muscular and vascular systems.
Both ionizing radiation and microgravity have been studied individually in previous research, but there is a lack of information on …

Impact Of Parasitic Drag On A Family Of Optimal Lift Distributions, Austin J. Stewart
Impact Of Parasitic Drag On A Family Of Optimal Lift Distributions, Austin J. Stewart
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Minimizing drag is a variational problem, and several minimum induced drag solutions have been found using different design constraints. The elliptic lift distribution is commonly used to minimize induced drag, but is only the optimal solution under one set of design constraints. Non-elliptic lift distributions are able to reduce induced drag, when compared to the elliptic lift distribution, by increasing the wingspan while maintaining a consistent wing–structure weight. However, these non-elliptic lift distributions are only optimal if the effects of viscous drag are neglected. In this study, numerical tools are used to estimate the total drag on rectangular wings that …
Hardware Accelerator For Star Centroiding, Nazmus Sakib

Since the dawn of civilization mankind has gazed upon the night sky and looked for directions. In this modern age, the stars have proved to be a reliable reference point for navigation in space. From small-satellites for gathering weather data to inter-planetary missions like Cassini Orbiter, figuring out the location of a spacecraft has been done successfully by taking images of star filed visible from the spacecraft, processing and analyzing the image to find the stars and then finding out from a star catalog which part of the sky the patterns of the visible stars best matches. But a lot …
Arsenic Release From Surface Soils Induced By Stormwater Bioretention, Kaisa H. Patterson
Arsenic Release From Surface Soils Induced By Stormwater Bioretention, Kaisa H. Patterson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Arsenic is a naturally occurring element known for its chronic and acute toxicity. The solubility of arsenic is highly dependent on environmental conditions. The soils of Cache Valley, UT, contain naturally occurring arsenic.
Bioretention systems rely on a combined plant-soil system to remove pollutants carried by stormwater, typically nitrogen, phosphorus, dissolved organic carbon, and select metals. Phosphate from stormwater potentially increases arsenic mobility, which makes stormwater pollutant loading an important factor for evaluating risks associated with stormwater bioretention. Pollutant removal in these systems occurs through sorption of contaminants onto the soils, physical filtration by the soil media, and uptake by …

Practical Optical Survey Strategies For Near Geostationary Orbital Debris, Akhter Mahmud Nafi
Practical Optical Survey Strategies For Near Geostationary Orbital Debris, Akhter Mahmud Nafi
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Uncontrolled space objects, more commonly known as space debris, consist of dead satellites, satellite deployment packages, and lost elements of these systems such as insulation blankets. These uncontrolled objects represent hazards to our nation’s most valuable space assets which include communication satellites, weather satellites, Earth monitoring systems, and military assets. To help mitigate this problem, this research proposes using the known astrodynamics of the near geosynchronous orbit (GEO) along with the known concentration of the uncontrolled GEO objects and observation constraints to design ground-based optical surveys that will detect uncatalogued debris. Furthermore, a scoring metric is developed to evaluate the …
Experimental Static And Cyclic Behavior Of Hybrid Non-Metallic Bridge Decks Reinforced With Discrete Gfrp Rebar And Gfrp Macrofiber, Jared W. Mcrory
Experimental Static And Cyclic Behavior Of Hybrid Non-Metallic Bridge Decks Reinforced With Discrete Gfrp Rebar And Gfrp Macrofiber, Jared W. Mcrory
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Bridge deck corrosion is a major expense in the U.S. every year. The increased use of deicing salts in cold weather climates has led to corrosion of the steel reinforcement in bridge decks, which leads to spalling and delamination of the concrete cover. This results in costly rehabilitations or repairs, and more sustainable bridge deck solutions must be provided to prevent this cycle.
As a part of this research project, a corrosion-resistant, hybrid reinforcement strategy that is shown to be cost neutral with epoxy coated rebar is proposed. The hybrid reinforcement strategy, consisting of discrete Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) …
Observation Of Struvite In The Mixed Microalgae Biofilm Matrix Of A Rotating Algal Biofilm Reactor During Nutrient Removal From Municipal Anaerobic Digester Filtrate, Kyle M. Hillman
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Central Valley Water Reclamation Facility (CVWRF) in Salt Lake City is the largest municipal wastewater treatment plant in Utah and must meet new and rigorous nutrient effluent standards–over 95% reduction in phosphorus output by 2025. Filtrate from CVWRF anaerobic digesters contains high levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, and magnesium. Supersaturation of these constituents leads to nuisance struvite precipitation that clogs belts, pumps, and pipes downstream of anaerobic digesters. Struvite is a mineral precipitate composed of equimolar magnesium, ammonium, and phosphate. Controlled precipitation of struvite helps prevent clogging and scaling, removes phosphate from wastewater, and generates a marketable fertilizer product.
Struvite was …
Energy Dissipation Of Type A Piano Key Weirs, Kam R. Eslinger, Brian M. Crookston
Energy Dissipation Of Type A Piano Key Weirs, Kam R. Eslinger, Brian M. Crookston
Publications
A Piano Key weir (PK weir) is a nonlinear, labyrinth-type weir well suited for rehabilitation projects due to a relatively small footprint and the ability to pass large discharges for lesser upstream-head values when compared with other weir types. A critical component of a hydraulic structure is the energy-dissipative properties. Currently, information and guidance is limited, with previous energy dissipation studies of PK weirs primarily of specific projects. Therefore, to document and quantify energy dissipation, four laboratory-scale Type A PK weir models with different width ratios (Wi/Wo) were studied, with 255 tests comprising this new …
