Assuring the integrity of spacecraft and its occupants are a priority in the field of space exploration. Micrometeoroids and orbital debris are one of the primary threats that affect spacecraft materials due to the high kinetic energies involved with hypervelocity impacts. Improvement of projectile launching capabilities prompts the investigation of adequate materials for the manufacturing of sabots able to carry high-density projectiles without catastrophic failure. Polycarbonate (PC) has been the chosen material by the Hypervelocity Team at White Sands Test Facility for sabots on the 0.50 caliber launcher; however, there is a material constraint when the projectile becomes significantly dense …

Design And Operability Of A Pressurized Oxy-Combustion System, Mehrin Chowdhury Jan 2020

Design And Operability Of A Pressurized Oxy-Combustion System, Mehrin Chowdhury

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Fossil fuel powers more than two-thirds of the world’s electricity, a significant share of which is derived from coal power plants. Despite coal being an abundant and energy-rich fuel, the major halt to its progress is greenhouse gas emissions. Greenhouse gases are detrimental to the environment. The search for clean fossil fuel leads to the oxy-combustion process. Oxy-fuel combustion produces sequestrable carbon dioxide as exhaust. Pressurization makes carbon capture more accessible and more energy-efficient. Pressurized oxy-combustion cycles can achieve theoretically high thermal efficiencies along with a 90% carbon capture rate. Additionally, the high energy density allows smaller turbomachinery and save …

Testing The Reliability And Flexibility Of Digitizers Adapting The Rf/If Signals Over Ip Applications Using A Testbed Platform, Jose Carlos Sandoval

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

As physical constraints can be challenging for Radio Frequency (RF) telemetry, a new solution has been exploited to support the demand for RF transmissions. As frequency spectrum gets crowded with more technologies, a solution to a reliable transmission is needed. Digitizers can mitigate many of the physical constraints in order to achieve a successful RF transmission. The method includes the conversion of the RF signals to be sent over IP networks, transmit and de-convert the signal. IP networks will mitigate many disadvantages over a regular signal transmission. The authority in charge to allocate frequency bands is the Federal Communications Commission …

Why Deep Learning Is More Efficient Than Support Vector Machines, And How It Is Related To Sparsity Techniques In Signal Processing, Laxman Bokati, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Nov 2019

Why Deep Learning Is More Efficient Than Support Vector Machines, And How It Is Related To Sparsity Techniques In Signal Processing, Laxman Bokati, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Several decades ago, traditional neural networks were the most efficient machine learning technique. Then it turned out that, in general, a different technique called support vector machines is more efficient. Reasonably recently, a new technique called deep learning has been shown to be the most efficient one. These are empirical observations, but how we explain them -- thus making the corresponding conclusions more reliable? In this paper, we provide a possible theoretical explanation for the above-described empirical comparisons. This explanation enables us to explain yet another empirical fact -- that sparsity techniques turned out to be very efficient in signal …

Computing Without Computing: Dna Version, Vladik Kreinovich, Julio C. Urenda Nov 2019

Computing Without Computing: Dna Version, Vladik Kreinovich, Julio C. Urenda

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The traditional DNA computing schemes are based on using or simulating DNA-related activity. This is similar to how quantum computers use quantum activities to perform computations. Interestingly, in quantum computing, there is another phenomenon known as computing without computing, when, somewhat surprisingly, the result of the computation appears without invoking the actual quantum processes. In this chapter, we show that similar phenomenon is possible for DNA computing: in addition to the more traditional way of using or simulating DNA activity, we can also use DNA inactivity to solve complex problems. We also show that while DNA computing without …

Deep Learning (Partly) Demystified, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva Nov 2019

Deep Learning (Partly) Demystified, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Successes of deep learning are partly due to appropriate selection of activation function, pooling functions, etc. Most of these choices have been made based on empirical comparison and heuristic ideas. In this paper, we show that many of these choices -- and the surprising success of deep learning in the first place -- can be explained by reasonably simple and natural mathematics.

Towards A Theoretical Explanation Of How Pavement Condition Index Deteriorates Over Time, Edgar Daniel Rodriguez Velasquez, Carlos M. Chang Albitres, Vladik Kreinovich Aug 2019

Towards A Theoretical Explanation Of How Pavement Condition Index Deteriorates Over Time, Edgar Daniel Rodriguez Velasquez, Carlos M. Chang Albitres, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

To predict how the Pavement Condition Index will change over time, practitioners use a complex empirical formula derived in the 1980s. In this paper, we provide a possible theoretical explanation for this formula, an explanation based on general ideas of invariance. In general, the existence of a theoretical explanation makes a formula more reliable; thus, we hope that our explanation will make predictions of road quality more reliable.

Nonlinear Mechanical Properties Of Road Pavements: Geometric Symmetries Explain The Empirical Difference Between Roads Built On Clay Vs. Granular Soils, Afshin Gholamy, Vladik Kreinovich Jun 2019

Nonlinear Mechanical Properties Of Road Pavements: Geometric Symmetries Explain The Empirical Difference Between Roads Built On Clay Vs. Granular Soils, Afshin Gholamy, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

It is empirically known that roads built on clay soils have different nonlinear mechanical properties than roads built on granular soils (such as gravel or sand). In this paper, we show that this difficult-to-explain empirical fact can be naturally explained if we analyze the corresponding geometric symmetries.

Due to its low side effects, proton therapy is rapidly developing around the world. However, the time and labor it takes to deliver the treatment have prevented widespread use in the clinic setting. For this reason, an automatic proton treatment analysis system is needed to improve efficiency during the treatment process.

The challenge lies in improving the accuracy and speed of the current proton treatment analysis system. The Range shifter correction factor is considered the same value under any given condition in our treatment system. This approximate algorithm limits the accuracy of the proton treatment analysis system. In addition, medical …

Compressive And Rheological Deformation Analysis Of Large Area Pellet-Fed Material Extrusion 3d Printed Parts In Relation To In Situ Thermal Imaging, Eduardo Meraz Trejo Jan 2019

Compressive And Rheological Deformation Analysis Of Large Area Pellet-Fed Material Extrusion 3d Printed Parts In Relation To In Situ Thermal Imaging, Eduardo Meraz Trejo

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In large area pellet extrusion additive manufacturing, the temperature of the substrate just prior to the deposition of a new subsequent layer has an effect on the overall structure of the part. Warping and cracking occur if the substrate temperature is below a specific threshold, but also deformation and deposition adhesion failure occur if the substrate temperature is above a certain threshold just prior to deposition of a new layer. Currently, Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM) machine users mitigate this problem by trial and error, which is costly and may result in decreased mechanical properties, monetary losses and time inefficiencies. …

Assessment Of Point Of Use (Pou) Systems For Reducing Health Risks Associated With Drinking Water Along The U.S.-Mexico Colonias In The Paso Del Norte Region, Varinia Viridiana Felix Parra

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In the Paso del Norte Region along the U.S. Mexico Border, there are more than 5,000 families living in impoverished communities known as colonias that lack access to basic infrastructure services such as a public water system. These depend on hauling trucks that deliver water into their storage tanks. Water storage practices by colonia residents on both sides of the border pose an enormous risk for waterborne disease outbreaks and heavy metal contamination because the water quality can decrease rapidly due to volatilization of the residual chlorine, intrusion of rainfall and air-laden dust. Since connection to centralized water treatment and …

Microstructure Evolution Of Chalcogenide Materials Via Molecular Dynamics, Sharmin Abdullah

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The properties of a material are defined by its granular microstructure which is determined by its grain evolution and the types of grain boundaries present in the structure. For example, the performance of Cadmium Sulfide/Cadmium Telluride (CdS/CdTe) solar cells can be affected by the presence of grain boundaries which makes the study of grain structure evolution a very important part of solar cell performance optimization. Grain boundary mobilities are important properties in material science and engineering as they determine grain structures under given processing and operating conditions.

In this thesis, several computational tools were used to analyze the formation and …

Development And Characterization Of Polyethylene Terephthalate (Pet)-Cotton Natural Fiber-Reinforced Composites From Waste Materials, Israel Alejandro Carrete

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Unprecedented levels of production and consumption have caused a rapid exhaustion of the Earth's virgin resources, which is coupled with a fast accumulation of contaminants in the form of solid waste, especially in landfills. Two significant landfill constituents come from textile waste and discarded plastic bottles. Since there is a finite amount of space that can be feasibly used for landfills, solutions that make use of these post-consumer products are imperative. This study presents one possible solution by using surface modifications of cotton fibers to produce a natural fiber-reinforced polymer composite (NFRPC) from post-consumer textile waste and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) …

Interference Mitigation Of Adjacent Radio Frequency Signals On A Flexible Software-Defined Radio Testbed Platform, Mirza Mohammad Maqbule Maqbule Elahi

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The radio frequency (RF) spectrum is crowded with users and adjacent frequency users are facing an increase in interference from each other. The spectrum governing body Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has the difficult task of allocating spectral bands for new users for mobile devices using 4G LTE technology. Telemetry is affected by the adjacent band 4G LTE users in terms of signal degradation. To minimize the interference between adjacent frequency users, several methods can be used. A common but inefficient method separates adjacent band frequencies using guard bands which leaves a big portion of the spectrum unused. Alternatively, adjacent RF …

The combustion induced high temperature-stress conditions of industrial gas turbines used in power generation causes turbine blades to wear and break after prolonged use. The need to predict turbine blade service life is ever increasing, leading to the development of several constitutive prediction models. It is necessary to design components for high-temperature/high-stress service such that creep failure does not occur during service life. For this reason, it is important to accurately predict creep life and understand the behavior of creep deformation leading to rupture. Several models have been expanded upon to improve their effectiveness for use with particular parametric data. …
