The increasing demand for video and the increase in the number of devices enable of supporting digital media facilitate the enormous demand for video streaming over internet and and Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) applications. The high bit rates that result from the various types of digital video make their transmission through their intended channels very difficult. Hence it becomes necessary to select a good compression scheme to overcome storage and transportation problems of the digital video. High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is an international standard for video compression developed by a working group of ISO/IEC MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group) …

Second Order Algorithm For Sparsely Connected Neural Networks, Parastoo Kheirkhah
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
A systematic two-step batch approach for constructing a sparse neural network is presented. Unlike other sparse neural networks, the proposed paradigm uses orthogonal least squares (OLS) to train the network. OLS based pruning is proposed to induce sparsity in the network. Based on the usefulness of the basic functions in the hidden units, the weights connecting the output to hidden units and output to input units are modified to form a sparse neural network. The proposed hybrid training algorithm has been compared with the fully connected MLP and sparse softmax classifier that uses second order training algorithm. The simulation results …

Smartphone-Based Crowd Sourcing Of Bicycle And Pedestrian Conflict Data For Transportation Safety Assessment, Rahul Ankushrao Kawadgave
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
This thesis presents the idea of mobile application development that aims at data collection for transportation safety assessment using cloud-based database. At present, transportation safety assessment relies only on data available from crash, accident reports. In combination with this crash data, it is possible that conflict data can become a very influential performance measure for transportation safety assessment. A transportation conflict happens when two parties cross a path and one party must take an action to avoid a collision or a crash. Such conflicts can occur between different transportation elements or parties like vehicle drivers, bicyclists, pedestrians. This project helps …
Active Flyback Based Battery Management System With Proportional Balancing For Use In An Electric Race Car, Matthew Martin
Active Flyback Based Battery Management System With Proportional Balancing For Use In An Electric Race Car, Matthew Martin
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
Battery management systems are responsible for many tasks, most important of which is maintaining balance amongst the cells in a series string to prevent excess aging and unsafe operating conditions \cite{WhyBMS1}\cite{WhyBMS2}. In lithium-ion battery packs, traditionally, and almost exclusively in the world at large today, balancing is achieved by switching a resistor in parallel with high cells to bleed energy out of them and dissipate it as heat. This tactic is not only 100 percent inefficient, but it is slow due to power dissipation restrictions typically thermally imposed within a system, and it is only effective at preventing over-voltage conditions. …

Method Of Characteristics Verification Of Inverse Frequency Model Of Turbulent Pipe Flow Transients, Mohammad Saifullah Mohammad Zafar Shaikh
Method Of Characteristics Verification Of Inverse Frequency Model Of Turbulent Pipe Flow Transients, Mohammad Saifullah Mohammad Zafar Shaikh
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
Pressure transients in pipes with turbulent flow have classically been simulated using numerical techniques such as the method of characteristics. An alternative method utilizing an inverse frequency algorithm has recently been introduced for smooth pipe and determined to be computationally fast compared to the method of characteristics and in some cases more accurate. In addition, comparisons with experimental water hammer data has verified that the inverse frequency method is accurate out to Reynolds numbers of 15,800. This thesis investigates a comparison or the inverse frequency and method of characteristics methods for Reynolds numbers out to 200,000 for smooth pipes.

The motivation of study is to combine multimodality approach EEG-fNIRS to study relationship between neural activity and hemodynamic response applying information theory concepts. Investigating human brain function can be improved by employing a multimodal neuroimaging approach. Since each neuroimaging modality has its own characteristic features especially in terms of spatial and temporal resolution integrating fNIRS responses with EEG could accurately characterize the neurovascular coupling in cortical regions selected as part of the brain network involved in motor and cognitive behavior. Simultaneous recording of fNIRS-EEG is therefore an important resource for studying aspects of neurovascular coupling and its relationship with pathological …

It is necessary for distributed neural assemblies to work in collaboration to achieve the most elementary brain functions. Activities within segregated neural assemblies are integrated to process an incredibly diverse collection of cognitive tasks. Measures such as correlation, cross-correlation, coherence and phase delay make limited use of the information that is available with the advanced multichannel and multimodal recordings of the brain’s activity. They can also give spurious and false results. Most importantly, these bivariate measures are not capable of describing the interaction among multiple neural assemblies and the effective connectivity among them. Through causality analysis, we can identify these …

A soil’s grain-size distribution affects its physical and hydraulic properties; however, little is known about its effect on soil thermal properties. To better understand how grain-size distribution affects soil thermal properties, specifically the effective thermal conductivity, a set of laboratory experiments was performed using binary mixtures of two uniform sands tightly packed with seven different mixing fractions over the full range of saturation. For each binary mixture, the effective thermal conductivity, l, capillary pressure, hc, and volumetric water content, q, were measured. Results demonstrated that the l–q relationship exhibited distinct characteristics based on the percentage of fine- and coarse-grained sands. …

As the Navy transitions to a more electrical fleet, the electrical architectures must adapt to the changing load profiles. With the introduction of electrical propulsion and new types of electrical energy based weapons, load profiles have become higher power and more transient than ever seen before – especially during directed energy weapon operation. One issue that has become apparent with the introduction of these transient loads is the ability of traditional generation sources, such as fossil fuel generators, to power them. Generators are stiff sources of power which suffer efficiency losses when they deviate from operating at a constant maximum …

Regularized Canonical Correlations In Clustering Sensor Data, Jia Chen
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
In many data acquisition applications such as in sensor networks, the acquired sensor measurements contain information about multiple sources placed at different spatial locations. Such sources could correspond to different e.g., thermal sources or transmitters placed at different locations inside the sensed field. Before applying any statistical inference task, it is essential to identify which groups of sensors acquire observations that contain information about the same sources. This is essential to avoid `mixing' observations that contain information about uncorrelated sources. In this thesis, the goal is to cluster sensors into different groups based on their source information content about the …

Embedded in each observation of a RADAR system is an amalgam of scattered signals. An important function of RADAR signal processing is to resolve or separate this mixture of target signals. Imaging using RADAR data is a well-established area of research. Conventional RADAR imaging methods use a two-dimensional Fourier transform to back-project RADAR measurements to scattering sources [1]. The Fourier transform based imaging techniques have resolution limited by the bandwidth and spatial diversity of available data samples. Super-resolution methods such as MUSIC overcome the resolution limitation by employing an alternate model for the measured data [2]. These techniques are capable …
