Annual wind power generation capacity in the US has increased from 3 gigawatts in 2000 to 61 gigawatts in 2013 and is on track to fulfill 20% of projected U.S. electricity needs (305 gigawatts) by 2030. To enable the increase in electricity generation of wind turbines, longer blades are being designed which require improved engineered blades to handle higher loads. Thus, the wind turbine industry is turning to the use of carbon-epoxy composite materials to take advantage of their low weight yet high strength ratio and improved fatigue resistance. Current analyses to design turbine blades utilize either Finite Element Analysis …

Thermal Energy Storage For Expanded Use Of Data Center Indirect/Direct Evaporative Cooling, Jefferey Luttrell Aug 2016

Thermal Energy Storage For Expanded Use Of Data Center Indirect/Direct Evaporative Cooling, Jefferey Luttrell

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Computer cooling system design evolved over time with goals of increasing efficiency and decreasing cost. Early computers were essentially hand-built and very expensive. Reliable operation required aggressive cooling to maintain acceptable component temperatures and this was achieved with relatively low ventilation air temperatures. With time, the scale of operations increased to the point that operating cost began to strongly influence design decisions. Computer room air conditioners consumed substantial amounts of electrical power, in some situations almost as much power as the computer equipment. One cost saving idea used outside air when the ambient temperature fell below the normal cooling supply …

Understanding The Alchemilla Leaf And Its Hydrophobicity, Atul Mohandas Kootathil

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

The Alchemilla leaf has been well known and studied frequently for its hydrophobic ability. However, much difficulty has been met in replicating its microstructure for hydrophobic applications. Also, not much experimental data was found on the behavior of leaf’s microstructure. Gathering information from experimental results may provide new understanding of its wetting properties before attempting to mimetic its wetting behavior. In this research, the focus is to detail the observed solid-water-air interaction on Alchemilla leaf by simulating condensation, evaporation and rainfall conditions, which are the common ways that a plant may interact with water drops in nature. Documenting these observations …

Attitude Stabilization Of Spacecraft Using Moving Masses, Juran Hwang Aug 2016

Attitude Stabilization Of Spacecraft Using Moving Masses, Juran Hwang

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

This research investigates the ability of stabilizing spacecraft rotational motion by internal mass actuation. The mass actuation mechanism consists of three internal masses placed along the three axes at some offset distance that can move to induce inertial forces and moments and change the inertia matrix and center of mass. A set of nonlinear equations of motion are developed to model the motion, both orbital and rotational dynamics and kinematics, of a spacecraft with mass and inertial variation due to internal mass actuation, under the gravitational field of Earth. The equations inherently include the inertia effect of the mass motion …

Additive manufacturing has made us realize that we can fabricate complex shapes that were difficult to manufacture with subtractive processes. Topology optimizations results have complex shapes and have rough surfaces which are difficult to manufacture even by additive manufacturing. To automate the process of converting rough surfaces into smooth surfaces for the benefit of manufacturability would be very desirable. Computing curve segments to approximate point cloud data that represents rough surfaces and then lofting it to have a smooth surface seems to be a promising methodology to achieve automation. We implement B-spline formulation along with Pottmann’s iterative method based on …

The current industrial additive technology i.e. zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) forms harmful deposits on …

Functional Studies Of The Human Telomerase Holoenzyme, Mohammed E. Sayed Aug 2016

Functional Studies Of The Human Telomerase Holoenzyme, Mohammed E. Sayed

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

Telomeres are the DNA structures that cap the ends of linear chromosomes. In humans, telomeres are composed of the hexameric repeats TTAGGG. The reverse transcriptase, telomerase maintains the telomeres by adding the TTAGGG repeats to the chromosomes during cell division. In the absence of telomerase, telomere length limits the self-renewal capabilities of cells. Telomerase is expressed in approximately 90% of all human cancers, making it an almost universal therapeutic target as well as an important player in the progression from healthy to cancerous cell. The biophysical studies discussed in this thesis focus on expanding the understanding of the function and …

Intuitive Human Robot Interfaces For Upper Limb Prosthetics, Oguz Yetkin

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

Modern robotic prosthetic devices for upper limb amputees promise to alleviate an important disability, but are underutilized due to the inability to properly control them. Specifically, the devices afford more degrees of freedom (DOFs) than are con- trollable by easily decoded biological signals. These devices, such as the DEKA arm, can have as many as 18 DOFs, although six is a more typical number (control of each finger plus thumb rotation). Unfortunately, the use of these devices remains limited by the ability of users to simultaneously control more than one degree of freedom at a time with commercially deployed technology. …

Centimeter-Deep Tissue Fluorescence Microscopic Imaging, Bingbing Cheng Aug 2016

Centimeter-Deep Tissue Fluorescence Microscopic Imaging, Bingbing Cheng

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

Fluorescence microscopic imaging in centimeter-deep tissue has been highly sought-after for many years because much interesting in vivo micro-information—such as microcirculation, tumor angiogenesis, and cancer metastasis—may deeply locate in tissue. However, it is very challenging because of strong tissue light scattering. This includes: how to confine the fluorescence emission into a small volume to achieve high spatial resolution; how to increase fluorescence emission efficiency to compensate the signal attenuation caused by small emission volume and tissue scattering/absorption; and how to reduce background fluorescence noise and exclusively differentiate signal photons from background photons to increase signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and sensitivity. Ultrasonic …

Mapping Of Prefrontal Hemodynamic Responses To Noxious Stimulation And Chronic Pain Related Resting-State Functional Networks Assessed By Fnirs, Amarnath Yennu

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

Neural representations of chronic pain are complex and are least understood. Numerous magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies have revealed structural and functional abnormalities in several cortical and sub-cortical regions in subjects with chronic low-back pain (CLBP). A more recent MRI study has reported that structural and functional brain abnormalities in pain-treated patients with CLBP are reversible, demonstrating that an appropriate treatment of chronic pain can restore normal brain functions for the patients. Due to high cost, non-portability, and other restrictions of MRI, the development of a complementary brain imaging tool is therefore crucial in order to improve the understanding of …

The primary goal of this research is to develop a comprehensive framework that can help landfill designers chose the best type of landfill (conventional, bioreactor, or aerobic) for a given situation based on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, traditional air pollutants and …

A Decision Support System For Traffic Diversion Around Construction Closures, Arezoo Memarian Aug 2016

A Decision Support System For Traffic Diversion Around Construction Closures, Arezoo Memarian

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

As highway infrastructure ages and road congestion increases, roads need to be expanded and reconstructed. It results in creating many construction sites and work zones on highways, which leads to an unavoidable interruption in normal traffic flows and have resulted in traffic congestion, more vehicle emissions, and traffic safety problems. During roadway construction, when lanes or entire highway sections must be temporarily closed, traffic managers would like to inform motorists of alternative routes around the construction site well in advance of the project location. This would help reduce traffic demand through the construction site, enhance the safety of the workers …

Group Assignment And Annual Average Daily Traffic Estimation Of Short-Term Traffic Counts Using Gaussian Mixture Modeling And Neural Network Models, Sunil Kumar Madanu Aug 2016

Group Assignment And Annual Average Daily Traffic Estimation Of Short-Term Traffic Counts Using Gaussian Mixture Modeling And Neural Network Models, Sunil Kumar Madanu

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The grouping of similar traffic patterns and cluster assignment process represent the most critical steps in AADT estimation from short-term traffic counts. Incorrect grouping and assignment often become a significant source of AADT estimation errors. For instance, grouping a commuter traffic trend pattern into a recreational traffic trend may produce an erroneous AADT value. The traditional knowledge-based methods, often aided with visual interpretation, introduce subjective bias while grouping traffic patterns. In addition, the grouping requires personnel resources to process large amounts of data and remains inefficient with unapparent traffic patterns. The functional class grouping, a traditional method, also produces larger …

Evaluation Of Food Waste Diversion Potential And Economics Of Using Food Waste Dehydrators, Arindam Dhar Aug 2016

Evaluation Of Food Waste Diversion Potential And Economics Of Using Food Waste Dehydrators, Arindam Dhar

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

According to US EPA (2013), food waste is the second largest component (14.6%) of MSW composition in the US, preceded only by paper. Apart from the negative environmental impacts of food waste through methane and leachate generation, it also incurs huge cost to landfill them. Hence, food waste diversion from landfills is becoming a major issue in landfills across many US states. Though biological treatment of food waste is a potential alternative for food waste diversion, the existing scale of this type of treatment is very narrow. On-site treatment of food waste is a suitable alternative as it can be …

Time-Triggered Controller Area Network Design For Formula Sae Racecars And Technique For Measuring Cpu Usage On Systems With Nested And Non-Nested Interrupts, Randy Kyle Long

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

This document presents a design method and example for a time-triggered CAN (TTCAN) system which reduces latency, variability in transmission frequency, and increases data throughput relative to the traditional free-for-all CAN (FFACAN) transmission system. In addition to performance considerations for a TTCAN transmission scheme, this document also presents a simple method for measuring CPU usage on embedded systems that use either nested or non-nested interrupts. Systems that use non-nested interrupts may have their performance measured with a single GPIO pin; systems that use nested interrupts require one pin per interrupt service routine.

Embedding Antenna Shear/Pressure Sensors In Prosthetic Liner Material, Shahanavaz Eilbeigi Aug 2016

Embedding Antenna Shear/Pressure Sensors In Prosthetic Liner Material, Shahanavaz Eilbeigi

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Published surveys indicated that 40-60% of prosthesis users experience discomfort and skin problems. These studies highlighted the needs for enhanced prosthetic performance and fit. It is extremely difficult to address these problems due to two reasons: first, ambulation create varying areas of shear and pressure on the residual limb, but it is not clear which shear/pressure combinations are acceptable and what is the safe stress level for users. In addition, the volume of the residual limb changes throughout the day and activity level. Therefore, there is a strong need to develop a light, thin, flexible, and wirelessly interrogated sensor for …
