Maximum Surface Storage Provided By Crop Residue, John E. Gilley, Eugene R. Kottwitz
Maximum Surface Storage Provided By Crop Residue, John E. Gilley, Eugene R. Kottwitz
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Small ponds created by crop residue serve to store water on upland areas. The present study is conducted to identify the maximum surface storage provided by crop residue. Equations for estimating surface storage are derived assuming that residue elements were oriented end to end, at uniform intervals, in a direction perpendicular to flow. Separate equations are developed for conditions where average slope was greater than or equal to residue cover, or less than residue cover. Both equations relate average surface-storage depth to residue cover, residue diameter, and average slope. Data to test the reliability of the equations are obtained in …

Hydraulic Conditions Required To Move Unanchored Residue Materials, John E. Gilley, E. R. Kottwitz, G. A. Wieman
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Hydraulic conditions required to initiate movement of unanchored residue materials are identified in the present study. Selected amounts of corn, cotton, pine needles, sorghum, soybean, sunflower, and wheat residue are placed in a flume on a sand surface, and flow is then introduced at the top of the flume in progressive increments. The discharge rate and flow velocity necessary to cause residue movement are determined. The ratio of critical flow depth to residue diameter, critical Reynolds number, critical shear stress, dimensionless shear stress, and boundary Reynolds number are calculated from hydraulic measurements. Regression equations are developed to relate dimensionless shear …

Electroless Metal Adhesion To Organic Dielectric Material With Phase Separated Morphology, Ravi F. Saraf
Electroless Metal Adhesion To Organic Dielectric Material With Phase Separated Morphology, Ravi F. Saraf
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Patents
Improved adhesion of electroless metal deposited on an organic dielectric layer with phase separated morphology is accomplished by the spontaneous formation of a morphologically and topographically rough surface. In one embodiment a ternary solution of a polar solvent and two polymer precursors of the same polymer which are separable in two phases of different order are cast in film on a substrate and heated to form two phases of different order to spontaneously produce a rough surface. Upon exposure to an alkaline solution, one phase is etched at a faster rate than the other. Seeding and electroless deposition of a …

Papers in Biotechnology
A series of experiments evaluated development of porcine zygotes microinjected with DNA in three culture media and two incubation temperatures, from postpubertal and prepubertal donors, and between zygotes injected with DNA into the pronucleus and the cytoplasm. Zygotes recovered from 36 postpubertal gilts in Exp. 1 were injected and cultured in modified NCSU-23, modified NCSU-37, and CZB media at 37°C or 39°C for 7 d. In Exp. 2, zygotes were collected from postpubertal or prepubertal gilts, microinjected with DNA, and cultured in modified NCSU-23. In Exp. 3 superovulated prepubertal gilts had DNA injected into the cytoplasm or pronucleus of zygotes. …

Constraint Objects, Divesh Srivastava, Raghu Ramakrishnan, Peter Revesz
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
We describe the Constraint Object Data Model (CODM), which enhances an object-based data model with existential constraints to naturally represent partially specified information. We present the Constraint Object Query Language (COQL), a declarative, rule-based query language that can be used to infer relationships about and monotonically refine information represented in the CODM. COQL has a model-theoretic and an equivalent fixed-point semantics, based on the notions of constraint entailment and "proofs in all possible worlds." We also provide a novel polynomial-time algorithm for quantifier elimination for set-order constraints, a restricted class of set constraints that uses membership of subset-equal.

Interferometric Determination Of The Quadratic Electro-Optic Coefficient Of Nitrobenzene, Harshad P. Sardesai, William C. Nunnally, P. F. Williams
Interferometric Determination Of The Quadratic Electro-Optic Coefficient Of Nitrobenzene, Harshad P. Sardesai, William C. Nunnally, P. F. Williams
P. F. (Paul Frazer) Williams Publications
An interferometric method that was used to measure the electro-optic s11 coefficient of nitrobenzene is presented. The method uses a Mach-Zehnder interferometer arrangement that produces a finite fringe interferogram. A nitrobenzene Kerr cell is placed in one arm of the interferometer and a pulsed high voltage is applied to the two rectangular electrodes. The voltage application causes the fringe image to shift in time, and this fringe shift is measured by a streak camera that streaks the fringe image across a slit. The streak start time is chosen before the application of the voltage pulse and ends after the …

First Shell Substitution Effects: Diglyeidyl Ether Of Bisphenol A Cured With 4,4'-Diaminodiphenylmethane, Hossein Noureddini, Delmar C. Timm
First Shell Substitution Effects: Diglyeidyl Ether Of Bisphenol A Cured With 4,4'-Diaminodiphenylmethane, Hossein Noureddini, Delmar C. Timm
Papers in Molecular Chemistry
First shell substitution effects were incorporated into a kinetic reaction model descriptive of the polymerization of an epoxy resin formulated from diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A and 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane. Analysis of populaiion density distribution dynamics for the hardener and several oligomers in the sol fraction showed that the reactivity of secondary amino hydrogens is less than the reactivity of primary amino hydrogens.

Laser Assisted Pd Seeding For Electroless Plating On Siq2, A. G. Schrott, B. Braren, Ravi F. Saraf
Ravi Saraf Publications
Excimer laser pulses with wavelengths of 248 and 308 nm were used to selectively seed Pd on SiO2 surfaces, making them suitable for electroless plating. This novel seeding process for insulating materials is accomplished with the sample immersed in the seeding solution, and occurs only on the areas of the substrate that are illuminated (through the liquid) by the laser light. The Pd content of the seeded samples increased with the number of pulses, but was rather independent of repetition rate. The deposition rate showed a dependence with wavelength consistent with a defect driven mechanism for electron excitation through …

Papers in Biotechnology
In vivo fertilized embryos were surgically collected from superovulated dairy cows to evaluate microinjection on embryo development and utilized the polymerase chain reaction technique for selection of transgenic embryos. Seventy-two percent of the embryos with visible pronuclei or nuclei were microinjected with DNA, and the remaining 28% served as uninjected controls. All embryos were cocultured with bovine oviductal epithelial cells. Mean final development scores of embryos within the same initial cell stage at collection were unaffected by microinjection. After 144 h of culture, 45% of the microinjected embryos developed to the morula or blastocyst stage. The transgene was detected in …

Reaction Kinetics Analyses Of Amine-Cured Epoxies: First Shell Substitution Effects, Hossein Noureddini, C Q. Zhang, Delmar C. Timm
Papers in Reaction Kinetics
Kinetic reaction theory was used to model first shell substitution effects for several amine-cured epoxy resins, subject to the constraint of intermolecular reactions. Moment analysis will allow numerical simulations to be extended beyond the gel point. Functionalities for several chemical moieties were correlated as a function of conversion. Simulations also incorporated population density distribution dynamics. Analyses of several oligomers clearly demonstrated the dependency of oligomeric weight fractions on first shell substitution effects and conversion. The ratio of rate constants for reactions of secondary amino hydrogens relative to reactions of primary amino hydrogens ranged from 0.5 to 1.2 for the resins …
Morphological Composite Materials Formed From Different Precursors, Ravi F. Saraf
Morphological Composite Materials Formed From Different Precursors, Ravi F. Saraf
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Patents
A method of producing a multiphase polymer is disclosed whereby the phases have the same chemical structure but have different morphological states and thus different properties. This is achieved by forming a mixture of precursors of the polymer, at least one of the precursors having a reaction rate higher than the other precursor or precursors in the mixture. The precursor having the highest reaction rate is then converted to obtain a composite of a polymer and the precursors that are not polymerized. This mixture might also be formed by mixing a soluble polymer with its precursor. The polymer/precursor composite is …

Inhomogeneous Anisotropic Percolation: Two-Dimensional Numerical Threshold Analysis, Yuris A. Dzenis, S. P. Joshi
Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications
Monte Carlo simulations of percolation on a square lattice with anisotropic inhomogeneous probability distribution are reported. Finite-size scaling is used for data analysis. As inhomogeneity increases, the critical probability decreases; whereas the correlation-length exponent remains, within computation errors, the same as in classical two-dimensional percolation.

Adsorption-Dissolution Reactions Affecting The Distribution And Stability Of Coii Edta In Iron Oxide-Coated Sand, James E. Szecsody, John M. Zachara, Patrick Bruckhart
Adsorption-Dissolution Reactions Affecting The Distribution And Stability Of Coii Edta In Iron Oxide-Coated Sand, James E. Szecsody, John M. Zachara, Patrick Bruckhart
United States Department of Energy: Publications
The time-variant chemical behavior of CoIIEDTA (and other metal-EDTA complexes) was investigated in suspensions of iron oxide-coated sand to identify equilibrium and kinetic reactions that control the mobility of MeIIEDTA complexes in subsurface environments. Batch experiments were conducted to evaluate the adsorption as a function of pH, concentration, and time and to quantify the rate-controlling step(s) of dissolution of the iron oxide by EDTA complexes. Ionic Co2+ exhibited typical cation-like adsorption, whereas MeIIEDTA adsorption was ligand-like, increasing with decreasing pH. Adsorption isotherms for all reactive species exhibited Langmuir behavior, with site saturation occurring …

Interaction Of Hydrophobic Organic Compounds With Mineral-Bound Humic Substances, Ellyn M. Murphy, John M. Zachara, Steven Smith, Jerry Phillips, Thomas Wletsma
United States Department of Energy: Publications
The sorption of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOC) on mineral-associated peat humic acid (PHA) was evaluated under different pH and electrolyte regimes. Relative size distribution measurements indicated that PHA was “coiled” in solution at high ionic strength (I) and elongated at low I. The sorption of PHA to hematite and kaolinite varied with I and electrolyte cation, suggesting that the configuration of the humic acid in solution influenced its structure on the mineral surface. The sorption maxima for PHA on kaolinite indicated that PHA occupies twice the mineral surface area at low I (0.005) as that observed at …

Light, Chlorophyll, Carboxylase Activity And Co2 Fixation At Various Depths In The Chlorenchyma Of Opuntia Ficus-Indica (L.) Miller Under Current And Elevated Co2, Park S. Nobel, Muyi Cui, Alvaro A. Israel
United States Department of Energy: Publications
Mature cladodes of Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Miller have a thick chlorenchyma (about 4 mm) with a relatively high chlorophyll content (0-65 g m-2), suggesting that light may be greatly attenuated and hence CO2 fixation negligible in the inner part of this tissue. Indeed, blue light (400-470 nm) and red light (670-685 nm) were 99% attenuated in the outer 2 mm of the chlorenchyma when the cladodes developed under both current and elevated CO2 concentrations. Nevertheless, the nocturnal acidity increase and 14C accumulation following a brief exposure to 14CO2 at night decreased only 22 …
