A Study On Effect Of Information From Navigation System On Driving Behavior, Mio Suzuki, Shota Moriya
Kentucky Transportation Center Presentations
In recent years, navigation services using smartphone applications have become common, and while the number of users is increasing, accidents and violations have begun to occur due to drivers being so focused on obtaining information that they cannot see their surroundings or the information itself is incorrect. Therefore, this study focuses on the fact that stress on drivers caused by such guidance can also be a cause of accidents, and aims to understand the understandability of information and driving behavior of navigation systems and stress by using a driving simulator. From the questionnaire survey by the users, it was found …

The state of Kansas is a relatively rural state with a majority of highway/interstate miles through farmland and low populated areas. These rural areas can be hot spots for crashes to occur and the lack of hospitals and emergency response nearby can make these types of crashes turn deadly. Few studies have been done on this topic especially for the state of Kansas. As the Department of Transportation is pushing to the “Drive to Zero” goal, pinpointing the harmful factors to indicate where improvements are needed to reduce the number, and severity of crashes is an important first step. Using …

Analyses And Reconstructions Of Crash Scenarios For Class 8, Long-Haul Trucks, Monish Dev Sudhakhar, Rohan Khaire, Jeffrey Wishart, Yan Chen
Kentucky Transportation Center Presentations
Knowledge and analysis of crash scenarios from naturalistic driving data can provide insight into the causes of crashes and thus motivate or benefit the future design of automated driving systems (ADSs). The circumstances commonly resulting in crashes for human-driven, light-duty vehicles were previously compiled into the 37 pre-crash scenarios by NHTSA [1]. However, crash analyses and reconstructions for Class 8 long-haul trucks have not yet been explored in the literature. The Crash Investigation Sampling System (CISS) database has been used as the crash data source for compiling a dataset containing details on a nationally representative sample of thousands of heavy-duty …
Geodatabase And Automation Code Used For Past And Real-Time Dynamic Landslide Hazard Maps In Eastern Kentucky, Nathaniel O'Leary, L. Sebastian Bryson, Jason M. Dortch
Geodatabase And Automation Code Used For Past And Real-Time Dynamic Landslide Hazard Maps In Eastern Kentucky, Nathaniel O'Leary, L. Sebastian Bryson, Jason M. Dortch
Earth and Environmental Sciences Research Data
We developed spatiotemporal landslide hazard maps (LHMs) using soil, hydrologic, and geomorphic parameters from the subaerial infinite slope factor of safety (FS) equation under unsaturated conditions. Soil properties were sourced from the NRCS WSS, while geomorphic variables were derived from a 1.5 m LiDAR-based DEM and ArcGIS Online. Soil moisture from Hydrus-1D, driven by precipitation and evapotranspiration (ET) data from Irrigation Manager, introduced temporal variability. Validation against known landslide sites demonstrated FS accuracy both spatially and temporally, despite some false positives. To reduce false positives and enhance slope stability representation, novel depth-to-bedrock (DTB) and soil root cohesion maps were incorporated …

This evolution in data acquisition for urban science is attributable to advancements in positioning and navigation technologies, widespread use of digital devices, the rise of Web 2.0, enhanced broadband communications, and refined data management techniques. The significance of crowdsourced geospatial data in the realm of urban sciences is now widely acknowledged. A diverse array of novel data sources has been increasingly gaining prominence. These include, but are not limited to, social media platforms, street …
Synthesis, Characterization, And Performance Assessment Of Reusable And Biodegradable Antimicrobial Polymeric Membranes For Aerosolized Pathogen Inactivation And Filtration, Ebuka Ogbuoji
Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering
Air filtration technology has proven effective in purifying air by trapping particulates which can cause adverse health effects. High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters, capable of capturing over 99.99% of PM0.3, are recommended for critical applications. However, conventional non-woven HEPA filters rely on electrostatic interactions to trap smaller particles, which can deplete over time or after cleaning, reducing filtration efficiency and posing health risks. Additionally, these filters contribute to plastic waste.
This dissertation investigated the feasibility of using flat sheet polymeric membranes fabricated via nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) as reusable and biodegradable alternatives to commercially available non-biodegradable air …

Unintended Consequences: Changes In Driver Behavior Associated With The Adoption Of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, Nischal Gupta, Peter T. Savolainen
Kentucky Transportation Center Presentations
Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are a disruptive precursor to fully autonomous vehicles (AVs), which will have far-reaching impacts on the nature of travel. With various ADAS features becoming increasingly common in vehicles, some unintended changes in driving behavior are expected including engaging in more risk-taking behavior while driving. To that end, the present study utilizes survey-based data of 1,000 Michigan adults and investigates the likelihood of drivers engaging in three different driving behaviors- cell phone use, consumption of alcohol, and tailgating when driving a vehicle with collision alert systems by means of multivariate ordered probit regression analysis. Results showed …

The Impact Of Dissolved Organic Matter On Photodegradation Rates, Byproduct Formations, And Degradation Pathways For Two Neonicotinoid Insecticides In Simulated River Waters, Josephus F. Borsuah, Tiffany L. Messer, Daniel D. Snow, Steven D. Comfort, Shannon Bartelt-Hunt
UK CARES Faculty Publications
The influences of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on neonicotinoid photochemical degradation and product formation in natural waters remain unclear, potentially impacting the sustainability of river systems. Therefore, our overall objective was to investigate the photodegradation mechanisms and phototransformation byproducts of two neonicotinoid pesticides, imidacloprid and thiamethoxam, under simulated sunlight at the microcosm scale, to assess the implications of DOM for insecticide degradation in rivers. Direct and indirect photolysis were investigated using twelve water matrices to identify possible reaction pathways with two DOM sources and three quenching agents. Imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, and potential degradants were measured, and reaction pathways identified. The photodegradation …
A 3-Step, Open-Data, Ride-Hailing Ridership Model With Pricing Applications, Richard A. Mucci
A 3-Step, Open-Data, Ride-Hailing Ridership Model With Pricing Applications, Richard A. Mucci
Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering
Researchers and practitioners studied the effects ride-hailing had in cities before the covid-19 pandemic. Previous research found ride-hailing to produce negative externalities, such as reducing transit ridership and increasing congestion in various cities. Since the pandemic, ride-hailing ridership has nearly recovered to pre-pandemic levels in Chicago. Ride-hailing ridership has grown steadily since the pandemic while a rider’s willingness to share their trip stagnated. Ride-hailing ridership nearly recovering to pre-covid levels in Chicago suggests that transportation planners, and policy makers, will need to continue assessing the impacts ride-hailing trips have in their cities.
Pickup and drop off locations in the Chicago …
Post-Capture Synthesis Of Images Using Manipulable Integration Functions, Paul Eberhart
Post-Capture Synthesis Of Images Using Manipulable Integration Functions, Paul Eberhart
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
Traditional photographic practice, as dictated by the properties of photochemical emulsion film, mechanical apparatus, and human operators, largely treats the sensitivity (gain) and integration interval as coarsely parameterized constants for the entire scene, set no later than the time of exposure. This frame-at-a-time capture and processing model permeates digital cameras and computer image processing. Emerging imaging technologies, such as time domain continuous imaging (TDCI), quanta image sensors (QIS), event cameras, and conventional sensors augmented with computational processing and control, provide opportunities to break out of the frame-oriented paradigm and capture a stream of data describing changes to scene appearance over …
Effect Of Admixtures On Rapid Hardening, Self-Consolidating Concrete, Haley Johnson
Effect Of Admixtures On Rapid Hardening, Self-Consolidating Concrete, Haley Johnson
Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering
Self-consolidating, rapid-hardening concrete is a sought-after product in the market now, however the effects of admixtures on fresh and hardened concrete rheology are still uncertain. This study aims to create a self-consolidating concrete (SCC) using calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cement for its rapid-hardening properties, and tests two set time retarders and two viscosity-modifying admixtures (VMAs) to determine how they affect the properties of concrete. The properties studied in this thesis are workability, viscosity, set times, air content, compressive strength, and freeze-thaw resistance of self-consolidating concrete. It was found that tartaric acid creates a very workable SCC with consistent results regardless of …
Quantitative Sustainable Design Of Urban Tree Soil Cells For Stormwater Management, Jamaya Wilson
Quantitative Sustainable Design Of Urban Tree Soil Cells For Stormwater Management, Jamaya Wilson
Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering
Urban trees are critical assets to cities around the world. They act as a green infrastructure system to provide various environmental, economic and social benefits to their surrounding environments. However, the quality of life of urban trees is severely threatened by uncontrolled urbanization and climate change. The compaction of urban soils to meet the structural stability requirements for buildings and pavements directly restricts tree growth. Soil cells are green infrastructure placed in tree wells to transfer active and static loads to pavements. This allows for reduced soil compaction and increased tree root expansion. However, because the technology is still in …
