Comparison Of Sparse Coding And Jpeg Coding Schemes For Blurred Retinal Images., Balaji Chandrasekaran
Comparison Of Sparse Coding And Jpeg Coding Schemes For Blurred Retinal Images., Balaji Chandrasekaran
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Overcomplete representations are currently one of the highly researched areas especially in the field of signal processing due to their strong potential to generate sparse representation of signals. Sparse representation implies that given signal can be represented with components that are only rarely significantly active. It has been strongly argued that the mammalian visual system is highly related towards sparse and overcomplete representations. The primary visual cortex has overcomplete responses in representing an input signal which leads to the use of sparse neuronal activity for further processing. This work investigates the sparse coding with an overcomplete basis set representation which …
Modeling Of Liquid Crystal Display And Photonic Devices, Zhibing Ge
Modeling Of Liquid Crystal Display And Photonic Devices, Zhibing Ge
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Liquid crystal (LC) materials have been widely applied in electro-optical devices, among which display is the most successful playground and numerous new applications in photonic areas (such as laser beam steering devices) are also emerging. To well guide the device design for optimum performance, accurate modeling is of prior and practical importance. Generally, the modeling of LC devices includes two parts in sequence: accurate LC molecule deformation extraction under external electric fields and optical calculation thereafter for the corresponding electro-optical behaviors. In this dissertation, first, hybrid finite element method and finite difference method are developed to minimize the free energy …
Pilot Study Of Nutrient Loading In A Wet Detention Lake, Eric C. Gurr
Pilot Study Of Nutrient Loading In A Wet Detention Lake, Eric C. Gurr
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Florida is surrounded by water, and its many internal lakes and rivers have long been recognized for their excellent fishing and boating. This notoriety draws land developers to the lake shores to establish residential and commercial infrastructure. This land development brings with it flood plain alteration, water level stabilization, and increased nutrients which cause adverse impacts to our lakes. In response, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) passed the Federal Clean Water Act (CWA) in 1972 which set the framework for the water quality standards for the entire United States. As a result of the CWA many point sources …
Control And Stabilization Of Laser Plasmasources For Euv Lithography, Jose Cunado
Control And Stabilization Of Laser Plasmasources For Euv Lithography, Jose Cunado
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) sources rely on droplet laser plasmas for EUV generation. These sources consist of a small (30 µm diameter) droplet which is excited into plasma emitting EUV around 13.5 nm, the industry’s chosen wavelength for EUV lithography (EUVL). These sources are the best candidates for the commercialization of EUVL allowing mass production of computer chips with 32 nm or even smaller feature size. However, the biggest challenges which EUV source developers encounter today are the issues of conversion efficiency (CE) and debris. In order to satisfy the technology requirements, the source will need to meet high levels of …

A Virtual Reality Visualization Ofan Analytical Solution Tomobile Robot Trajectory Generationin The Presence Of Moving Obstacles, Ricardo Elias
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Virtual visualization of mobile robot analytical trajectories while avoiding moving obstacles is presented in this thesis as a very helpful technique to properly display and communicate simulation results. Analytical solutions to the path planning problem of mobile robots in the presence of obstacles and a dynamically changing environment have been presented in the current robotics and controls literature. These techniques have been demonstrated using two-dimensional graphical representation of simulation results. In this thesis, the analytical solution published by Dr. Zhihua Qu in December 2004 is used and simulated using a virtual visualization tool called VRML.

Resource-Constraint And Scalable Data Distribution Management For High Level Architecture, Pankaj Gupta
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, we present an efficient algorithm, called P-Pruning algorithm, for data distribution management problem in High Level Architecture. High Level Architecture (HLA) presents a framework for modeling and simulation within the Department of Defense (DoD) and forms the basis of IEEE 1516 standard. The goal of this architecture is to interoperate multiple simulations and facilitate the reuse of simulation components. Data Distribution Management (DDM) is one of the six components in HLA that is responsible for limiting and controlling the data exchanged in a simulation and reducing the processing requirements of federates. DDM is also an important problem …
A Study Of Syngas Oxidation At High Pressures And Low Temperatures, Danielle Marie Kalitan
A Study Of Syngas Oxidation At High Pressures And Low Temperatures, Danielle Marie Kalitan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ignition and oxidation characteristics of CO/H2, H2/O2 and CO/H2/CH4/CO2/Ar fuel blends in air were studied using both experimental and computer simulation methods. Shock-tube experiments were conducted behind reflected shock waves at intermediate temperatures (825 < T < 1400 K) for a wide range of pressures (1 < P < 45 atm). Results of this study provide the first undiluted fuel-air ignition delay time experiments to cover such a wide range of syngas mixture compositions over the stated temperature range. Emission in the form of chemiluminescence from the hydroxyl radical (OH*) transition near 307 nm and the pressure behind the reflected shock wave were used to monitor reaction progress from which ignition delay times were determined. In addition to the experimental analysis, chemical kinetics calculations were completed to compare several chemical kinetics mechanisms to the new experimental results. Overall, the models were in good agreement with the shock-tube data, especially at higher temperatures and lower pressures, yet there were some differences between the models at higher pressures and the lowest temperatures, in some cases by as much as a factor of five. In order to discern additional information from the chemical kinetics mechanisms regarding their response to a wide range of experimental conditions, ignition delay time and reaction rate sensitivity analyses were completed at higher and lower temperatures and higher and lower pressures. These two sensitivity analyses allow for the identification of the key reactions responsible for ignition. The results of the sensitivity analysis indicate that the ignition-enhancing reaction H + O2 = O + OH and hydrogen oxidation kinetics in general were most important regardless of mixture composition, temperature or pressure. However, lower-temperature, higher-pressure ignition delay time results indicate additional influence from HO2- and CO- containing reactions, particularly the well-known H + O + M = HO2 + M reaction and also the CO + O + M = CO2 + M and CO + HO2 = CO2 + OH reactions. Differences in the rates of the CO-related reactions are shown to be the cause of some of the discrepancies amongst the various models at elevated pressures. However, the deviation between the models and the experimental data at the lowest temperatures could not be entirely explained by discrepancies in the current rates of the reactions contained within the mechanisms. Additional calculations were therefore performed to gain further understanding regarding the opposing ignition behavior for calculated and measured ignition delay time results. Impurities, friction induced ionization, static charge accumulation, boundary layer effects, wall reaction effects, and revised chemical kinetics were all considered to be possible mechanisms for the model and measured data disparity. For the case of wall-reaction effects, additional shock-tube experiments were conducted. For the remaining effects listed above, only detailed calculations were conducted. Results from this preliminary anomaly study are at this time inconclusive, but likely avenues for future study were identified. Additional kinetics calculations showed that the large difference between the experimental data and the chemical kinetics models predictions at low temperatures can be explained by at least one missing reaction relevant to low-temperature and high-pressure experimental conditions involving the formation of H2O2, although further study beyond the scope of this thesis is required to prove this hypothesis both theoretically and experimentally.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the clogging potential of installed pervious concrete systems, to analyze rehabilitation techniques and develop construction specifications for the construction of portland cement pervious concrete specific to the state of Florida. Currently, a consistent statewide policy has not been established in reference to credit for storage volume within the voids in pervious concrete and the coarse aggregate base. For this reason a current and updated assessment of pervious pavement is needed to benefit from the advantages of pervious pavement use in low traffic volume areas. Initially by modeling a pervious concrete system …

Collaborative Context-Based Reasoning, Gilbert Barrett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores modeling collaborative behavior, based on Joint Intentions Theory (JIT), in Context-Based Reasoning (CxBR). Context-Based Reasoning is one of several contextual reasoning paradigms. And, Joint Intentions Theory is the definitive semantic framework for collaborative behaviors. In order to formalize collaborative behaviors in CxBR based on JIT, CxBR is first described in terms of the more popular Belief, Desire, and Intention (BDI) model. Once this description is established JIT is used as a basis for the formalism for collaborative behavior in CxBR. The hypothesis of this dissertation is that this formalism allows for effective collaborative behaviors in CxBR. Additionally, …
Examining Dynamic Variable Speed Limit Strategies For The Reduction Of Real-Time Crash Risk On Freeways, Ryan Cunningham
Examining Dynamic Variable Speed Limit Strategies For The Reduction Of Real-Time Crash Risk On Freeways, Ryan Cunningham
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent research at the University of Central Florida involving crashes on Interstate-4 in Orlando, Florida has led to the creation of new statistical models capable of determining the crash risk on the freeway (Abdel-Aty et al., 2004; 2005, Pande and Abdel-Aty, 2006). These models are able to calculate the rear-end and lane-change crash risks along the freeway in real-time through the use of static information at various locations along the freeway as well as the real-time traffic data obtained by loop detectors. Since these models use real-time traffic data, they are capable of calculating rear-end and lane-change crash risk values …
Congestion Avoidance And Fairness In Wireless Sensor Networks, Mohammad Ahmad
Congestion Avoidance And Fairness In Wireless Sensor Networks, Mohammad Ahmad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Sensor network congestion avoidance and control primarily aims to reduce packet drops while maintaining fair bandwidth allocation to existing network flows. The design of a congestion control algorithm suited for all types of applications in sensor networks is a challenging task due to the application-specific nature of these networks. With numerous sensors transmitting data simultaneously to one or more base stations (also called sinks), sensor nodes located near the base station will most likely experience congestion and packet loss. In this thesis, we propose a novel distributed congestion avoidance algorithm which calculates the ratio of the number of downstream and …

Developing Strand Space Based Models And Proving The Correctness Of The Ieee 802.11i Authentication Protocol With Restricted Sec, Zeeshan Furqan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The security objectives enforce the security policy, which defines what is to be protected in a network environment. The violation of these security objectives induces security threats. We introduce an explicit notion of security objectives for a security protocol. This notion should precede the formal verification process. In the absence of such a notion, the security protocol may be proven correct despite the fact that it is not equipped to defend against all potential threats. In order to establish the correctness of security objectives, we present a formal model that provides basis for the formal verification of security protocols. We …
Hot Carrier Effect On Ldmos Transistors, Liangjun Jiang
Hot Carrier Effect On Ldmos Transistors, Liangjun Jiang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
One of the main problems encountered when scaling down is the hot carrier induced degradation of MOSFETs. This problem has been studied intensively during the past decade, under both static and dynamic stress conditions. In this period it has evolved from a more or less academic research topic to one of the most stringent constraints guaranteeing the lifetime of sub-micron devices. New drain engineering technique leads to the extensive usage of lateral doped drain structures. In these devices the peak of the lateral field is lowered by reducing the doping concentration near the drain and by providing a smooth junction …

An Interactive Framework For Meshless Methods Analysis In Computational Mechanics And Thermofluids, Salvadore Anthony Gerace
An Interactive Framework For Meshless Methods Analysis In Computational Mechanics And Thermofluids, Salvadore Anthony Gerace
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In recent history, the area of physics-based engineering simulation has seen rapid increases in both computer workstation performance as well as common model complexity, both driven largely in part by advances in memory density and availability of clusters and multi-core processors. While the increase in computation time due to model complexity has been largely offset by the increased performance of modern workstations, the increase in model setup time due to model complexity has continued to rise. As such, the major time requirement for solving an engineering model has transitioned from computation time to problem setup time. This is due to …

Discussion On Effective Restoration Of Oral Speech Using Voice Conversion Techniques Based On Gaussian Mixture Modeling, Gustavo Alverio
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Today's world consists of many ways to communicate information. One of the most effective ways to communicate is through the use of speech. Unfortunately many lose the ability to converse. This in turn leads to a large negative psychological impact. In addition, skills such as lecturing and singing must now be restored via other methods. The usage of text-to-speech synthesis has been a popular resolution of restoring the capability to use oral speech. Text to speech synthesizers convert text into speech. Although text to speech systems are useful, they only allow for few default voice selections that do not represent …
An Investigation Of Size Exclusion And Diffusion Controlled Membrane Fouling, Colin Michael Hobbs
An Investigation Of Size Exclusion And Diffusion Controlled Membrane Fouling, Colin Michael Hobbs
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The reduction of membrane productivity (i.e. membrane fouling) during operation occurs in virtually all membrane applications. Membrane fouling originates from the method by which membranes operate: contaminants are rejected by the membrane and retained on the feed side of the membrane while treated water passes through the membrane. The accumulation of these contaminants on the feed side of the membrane results in increased operating pressures, increased backwashing frequencies, increased chemical cleaning frequencies, and increased membrane replacement frequencies. The most significant practical implication of membrane fouling is increased operating and maintenance costs. As such, membrane fouling must be properly managed to …

Entire Load Efficiency And Dynamic Performance Improvements For Dc-Dc Converters, Osama Abdel-Rahman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The scope of this work can be summarized by three main aspects of DC-DC power converters. The first aspect is soft switching topologies to improve conversion efficiency for On-Board Converters or Point of load (POL) converters, the second aspect is load adaptive control techniques to improve all load efficiency for battery powered DC-DC converters that are applied to mobile devices, and the third aspect is dynamic performance improvement techniques to improve load transient in voltage regulators. Topologies and control techniques for DC-DC converters are presented after reviewing loads powering requirements and steady-state and transients design challenges.
Lattice Boltzmann Simulation To Study Single And Multi Bubble Dynamics, Amit Gupta
Lattice Boltzmann Simulation To Study Single And Multi Bubble Dynamics, Amit Gupta
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has emerged as a powerful tool that has replaced conventional macroscopic techniques like Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in many applications. The LBM starts from meso- and microscopic Boltzmann's kinetic equation to determine macroscopic fluid dynamics. The origins of LBM can be drawn back to lattice gas cellular automata (LGCA); however it lacks Galilean invariance and creates statistical noise in the system. LBM on the other hand does away from these drawbacks of LGCA, and is easy to implement in complex geometries and can be used to study microscopic flow behavior in complex …

Buffer Techniques For Stochastic Resource Constrained Project Scheduling With Stochastic Task Insertions Problems, Jennifer Grey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Project managers are faced with the challenging task of managing an environment filled with uncertainties that may lead to multiple disruptions during project execution. In particular, they are frequently confronted with planning for routine and non-routine unplanned work: known, identified, tasks that may or may not occur depending upon various, often unpredictable, factors. This problem is known as the stochastic task insertion problem, where tasks of deterministic duration occur stochastically. Traditionally, project managers may include an extra margin within deterministic task times or an extra time buffer may be allotted at the end of the project schedule to protect the …

Magnetics Design For High Current Low Voltage Dc/Dc Converter, Hua Zhou
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With the increasing demand for small and cost efficient DC/DC converters, the power converters are expected to operate with high efficiency. Magnetics components design is one of the biggest challenges in achieving the higher power density and higher efficiency due to the significant portion of magnetics components volume in the whole power system. At the same time, most of the experimental phenomena are related to the magnetics components. So, good magnetics components design is one of the key issues to implement low voltage high current DC/DC converter. Planar technology has many advantages. It has low profile construction, low leakage inductance …

An Analysis Of Misclassification Rates For Decision Trees, Mingyu Zhong
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The decision tree is a well-known methodology for classification and regression. In this dissertation, we focus on the minimization of the misclassification rate for decision tree classifiers. We derive the necessary equations that provide the optimal tree prediction, the estimated risk of the tree's prediction, and the reliability of the tree's risk estimation. We carry out an extensive analysis of the application of Lidstone's law of succession for the estimation of the class probabilities. In contrast to existing research, we not only compute the expected values of the risks but also calculate the corresponding reliability of the risk (measured by …

High Current Density Low Voltage Isolated Dc-Dc Converterswith Fast Transient Response, Liangbin Yao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With the rapid development of microprocessor and semiconductor technology, industry continues to update the requirements for power supplies. For telecommunication and computing system applications, power supplies require increasing current level while the supply voltage keeps decreasing. For example, the Intel's CPU core voltage decreased from 2 volt in 1999 to 1 volt in 2005 while the supply current increased from 20A in 1999 to up to 100A in 2005. As a result, low-voltage high-current high efficiency dc-dc converters with high power-density are demanded for state-of-the-art applications and also the future applications. Half-bridge dc-dc converter with current-doubler rectification is regarded as …
Augmentation In Visual Reality (Avr), Yunjun Zhang
Augmentation In Visual Reality (Avr), Yunjun Zhang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Human eyes, as the organs for sensing light and processing visual information, enable us to see the real world. Though invaluable, they give us no way to "edit" the received visual stream or to "switch" to a different channel. The invention of motion pictures and computer technologies in the last century enables us to add an extra layer of modifications between the real world and our eyes. There are two major approaches to modifications that we consider here, offline augmentation and online augmentation. The movie industry has pushed offline augmentation to an extreme level; audiences can experience visual surprises that …
Self-Assembled Lipid Tubules: Structures, Mechanical Properties, And Applications., Yue Zhao
Self-Assembled Lipid Tubules: Structures, Mechanical Properties, And Applications., Yue Zhao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Self-assembled lipid tubules are particularly attractive for inorganic synthesis and drug delivery because they have hollow cylindrical shapes and relatively rigid mechanical properties. In this thesis work, we have synthesized lipid tubules of 1,2-bis(tricosa-10,12-dinoyl)-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DC8,9PC) by self-assembly and polymerization in solutions. We demonstrate for the first time that both uniform and modulated molecular tilt orderings exist in the tubule walls, which have been predicted by current theories, and therefore provide valuable supporting evidences for self-assembly mechanisms of chiral molecules. Two novel methods are developed for studying the axial and radial deformations of DC8,9PC lipid tubules. Mechanical properties of DC8,9PC tubules …
